ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There is a strong association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and periodontitis. This study utilized the Life Essentials 8 (LE8) score, a composite measure of cardiovascular health (CVH), to elucidate the relationship between CVH and periodontitis. METHODS: Data from 8,649 nationally representative participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. The independent variable in our study was the CVH score (a higher CVH score indicates better cardiovascular health), and the dependent variable was the presence or absence of periodontitis. The association between CVH and periodontitis was investigated using weighted multivariable logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS). We controlled for potential confounders such as age, sex, race, education, and socioeconomic status to minimize bias. RESULTS: There was a negative association between the total CVH score and the odds of periodontitis. After adjusting for all covariates, a 10-point increase in total CVH score was associated with a 10% lower in the odds of periodontitis [0.90 (0.87, 0.93)]. Participants with a higher CVH had 40% lower odds of periodontitis compared with those with a lower CVH. Socioeconomic status (education and income) modified this association (P for interaction < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that better cardiovascular health, as indicated by higher CVH scores, is associated with a reduced likelihood of periodontitis among US adults. The relationship between CVH and periodontitis appears to be influenced by socioeconomic status, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in populations with lower socioeconomic status.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The recovery of psychosocial functioning is an important treatment goal for patients with depression. The aim of the present study is to investigate psychosocial functioning restoration 1 year after major depressive disorder (MDD) remission. METHODS: Depression symptoms and psychosocial functioning were assessed in 167 remitted MDD patients at baseline, as well as 1, 2, 6, 9, and 12 months following remission, according to the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) and Generic Quality of Life Inventory (GQOLI-74). RESULTS: Of the 167 MDD patients, 85 completed the final evaluation at 1 year, 32 relapsed, and 50 dropped out. The total relapse rate over 1 year was 27%. A rapid increase in psychosocial functioning was found in the first 2 months after remission in the non-relapse group. In the non-relapse group, psychosocial functioning was higher at 2 months than at baseline. At baseline and 2 months, psychosocial functioning was lower in the relapse group patients compared to those in the non-relapse group. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with MDD showed continuous improvement in psychosocial functioning during the first year after remission, though psychosocial functioning in the relapse group remained the same during the first two months, suggesting possible further relapse.

ABSTRACT

A series of novel mono- and di-substituted N-n-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives were synthesized simultaneously via a three-step reaction. The single crystal structure of N-n-butyl-4-[N',N'-bis(2',4'-dichlorobenzoyl)ethylamino]-1,8-naphthalimide (3f) was determined. The UV-vis and fluorescence properties of compound 3f were investigated. The 3f showed highly selective and sensitive fluorescence changes response towards Pb2+. A titration of monomer with Pb2+ ion was performed. When Pb2+ ion concentration increased from 0 to 10 eq., the fluorescent intensity of 3f decreased from 199.97 to 48.21. The pH effect on 3f showed that it is stable in a wide range of pH. The results indicated that 3f might be a probe molecule for Pb2+.

ABSTRACT

High-entropy alloys are promising candidates expected to be applied in transportation equipment serving in extreme environments due to their excellent properties. CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy is a typical representative of them, and its low temperature performance is excellent. In this study, to evaluate the feasibility of forming HEA shells, the deformation behavior of CoCrFeMnNi under a plane-stress state at lower temperatures was thoroughly studied. Firstly, a thin-walled HEA tube was fabricated using hot extrusion and further formed into a thin shell for uniaxial tensile and biaxial bulging tests. Subsequently, uniaxial tensile tests at cryogenic temperatures were conducted. Both the strength and the ductility improves as the temperature decreases from -160 °C to -196 °C. Then, a systematic low-temperature bulging test was performed using isothermal dome tests and the thickness uniformity analysis of the bulged specimens was carried out. In addition, grain microstructural observation using EBSD was characterized analyze the possible deformation mechanism at the cryogenic temperature under the biaxial stress state. This study, for the first time, investigated the biaxial deformation behavior of HEA. Considering the plane-stress state deformation is the dominant type in the thin-walled shell deformation, this study enables us to provide direct guidance for various sheet-forming processes of HEAs.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The pathogenesis between oxidative stress and periodontitis was correlated. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a systematic tool to assess the effects of diet and lifestyle in relation to oxidative stress. However, the association between OBS and periodontitis has not been reported previously. Methods: Sixteen dietary factors and four lifestyle factors were selected to score the OBS. Multivariate logistic regression and sensitivity analysis were used to investigate the relationship between OBS and periodontitis based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were used to investigate whether this association was stable across populations. Results: This study included 3,706 participants. There was a negative linear association between OBS and periodontitis in all participants [0.89 (0.80, 0.97)], and after converting OBS to a quartile variable, participants with OBS in the highest quartile had a 29% lower risk of periodontitis than those with OBS in the lowest quartile [0.71 (0.42, 0.98)]. This negative association differed with respect to age and diabetes. Conclusion: There is a negative association between OBS and periodontitis in US adults. Our results suggest that OBS may be used as a biomarker for measuring periodontitis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated condition characterized by abundant IgG4 positive plasma cells and fibrosis in the affected tissues. It affects most parts of the body; however, there are not many reports on IgG4-RD involving the colon. CASE SUMMARY: A 50-year-old man complaining of intermittent fever for more than two years was referred to our hospital. Based on various investigations before surgery, we diagnosed him with chronic perforation of the sigmoid colon caused by inflammatory change or tumor. IgG blood tests before the operation suggested IgG4-RD, and postoperative pathology confirmed this prediction. CONCLUSION: We present a patient with IgG4-RD with colon involvement, which is an uncommon site. This report will expand the understanding of IgG4-RD in unknown tissues.

ABSTRACT

The 3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamates (2) of cellulose bearing a small amount of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl residues were synthesized by a one-pot process and immobilized onto a silica gel through intermolecular polycondensation of the triethoxysilyl groups. The obtained cellulose derivatives were characterized by (1) H NMR and elemental analysis (EA), and their recognition abilities were evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The cellulose derivatives containing about 1-5% of the 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl residue were efficiently immobilized with a high chiral recognition ability. The immobilized chiral packing materials (CPMs) could be used with the eluents containing chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF), which cannot be used with the conventional coated-type chiral packing materials. By using these eluents, the chiral recognition for many racemates was improved.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout in physicians is prevalent and can have many negative effects. The purposes of this study were to explore the prevalence of occupational burnout and to analyze the effects of social support and role stress on occupational burnout among Chinese physicians. METHODS: Using multistage-stratified cluster random sampling, physicians were selected to participate in the study and completed three questionnaires: the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory; the Cross-Cultural Role Conflict, Ambiguity and Overload Scale; and the Social Support Rating Scale. A path analysis was run to test the effects of role stress and social support on occupational burnout. RESULTS: Of 2530 physicians, 864 (34.2%) were experiencing moderate occupational burnout and 140 (5.5%) were experiencing severe occupational burnout. The path analysis results indicated that role conflict had direct positive effects on emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP), and role ambiguity had direct positive effects on DP and decreased personal accomplishment (DPA). Coworker support had direct negative effects on EE and positive effects on DP, family support had direct negative effects on DP and DPA. Coworker support mediated the effects of role ambiguity on EE and DP, and family support mediated the effects of role ambiguity on DP and DPA. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that occupational burnout is common in Chinese physicians, and that role stress and social support play important roles in occupational burnout. Interventions that aim to reduce role stress and increase social support can be effective approaches to prevent occupational burnout among physicians.

ABSTRACT

Near- α titanium alloys have extensive applications in high temperature structural components of aircrafts. To manufacture complex-shaped titanium alloy panel parts with desired microstructure and good properties, an innovative low-cost hot stamping process for titanium alloy was studied in this paper. Firstly, a series of hot tensile tests and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations were performed to investigate hot deformation characteristics and identify typical microstructural evolutions. The optimal forming temperature range is determined to be from 750 °C to 900 °C for hot stamping of TA15. In addition, a unified mechanisms-based material model for TA15 titanium alloy based on the softening mechanisms of recrystallization and damage was established, which enables to precisely predict stress-strain behaviors and potentially to be implemented into Finite Element (FE) simulations for designing the reasonable processing window of structural parts for the aerospace industry.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Burn-out among doctors threatens their own health, and that of their patients. To identify risk factors of the doctor burn-out is vital to improving their health and increasing the quality of healthcare services. This study aims to explore the relationship between work-family conflict (WFC) and burn-out among Chinese doctors and the mediating role of coping styles in this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in China, with a questionnaire packet which consisted of the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI), WFC Scale and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ). A total of 2530 doctors participated in the survey. Correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationship between CMBI, WFC and SCSQ scores. A linear regression model was set to determine the mediating role of coping styles on the relationship between WFC and burn-out. RESULTS: Doctors who had higher scores on work interfering with family conflict, reported more emotional exhaustion (r=0.514, P<0.001) and had a sense of accomplishment (r=-0.149, P<0.001). Simultaneously, family interfering with work (FIW) was positively associated with all dimensions of burn-out (r=0.213, 0.504, 0.088, respectively, P<0.001). Coping styles had partial, complete and even mediating effects on the relationship between WFC and burn-out among Chinese doctors. CONCLUSIONS: WFC was correlated with burn-out, and coping style was a mediator in this relationship among Chinese doctors. Coping style was a positive resource against burn-out.
