ABSTRACT

Synaptic devices that emulate synchronized memory and processing are considered the core components of neuromorphic computing systems for the low-power implementation of artificial intelligence. In this regard, electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) have gained much scientific attention, having a similar working mechanism as the biological synapses. Moreover, compared to a traditional solid-state gate dielectric, the liquid dielectric has the key advantage of inducing extremely large modulation of carrier density while overcoming the problem of electric pinholes, that typically occurs when using large-area films gated through ultra-thin solid dielectrics. Herein we demonstrate a three-terminal synaptic transistor based on ruthenium-doped cobalt ferrite (CRFO) thin films by electrolyte gating. In the CRFO-based EGT, we have obtained multilevel non-volatile conductance states for analog computing and high-density storage. Furthermore, the proposed synaptic transistor exhibited essential synaptic behavior, including spike amplitude-dependent plasticity, spike duration-dependent plasticity, long-term potentiation, and long-term depression successfully by applying electrical pulses. This study can motivate the development of advanced neuromorphic devices that leverage simultaneous modulation of electrical and magnetic properties in the same device and show a new direction to synaptic electronics.

ABSTRACT

Complementary to bulk synthesis, here we propose a designer lattice with extremely high magnetic frustration and demonstrate the possible realization of a quantum spin liquid state from both experiments and theoretical calculations. In an ultrathin (111) CoCr2O4 slice composed of three triangular and one kagome cation planes, the absence of a spin ordering or freezing transition is demonstrated down to 0.03 K, in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic correlations in the energy scale of 30 K between Co and Cr sublattices, leading to the frustration factor of ∼1000. Persisting spin fluctuations are observed at low temperatures via low-energy muon spin relaxation. Our calculations further demonstrate the emergence of highly degenerate magnetic ground states at the 0 K limit, due to the competition among multiply altered exchange interactions. These results collectively indicate the realization of a proximate quantum spin liquid state on the synthetic lattice.

ABSTRACT

Localization arguments forbid the appearance of a metallic ground state in two dimensions. Yet, a large variety of disordered superconductors are known to manifest an anomalous metal phase in the zero temperature limit. While previous observations were confined to noncrystalline "dirty" superconductors, the recent observation of the so-called Bose metal phase in crystalline thin flakes of NbSe2 has sparked off intense debate. While the exact nature of this phase remains unknown, it is thought that quantum fluctuations play a decisive role in Bose metal physics. In this work, we study the response of the anomalous metal phase in thin flakes of NbSe2 to dissipative coupling. We evince a dramatic quenching of the Bose metal phase when dissipative coupling is strong, fully restoring a zero resistance superconducting state in the entire region of the magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagram where the Bose metal phase is otherwise observed. The suppression of the Bose metal phase by dissipative coupling is possible only in a quantum system where dissipation can directly affect system thermodynamics. Our observation of a dissipative phase transition in two-dimensional NbSe2 firmly establishes the quantum nature of the anomalous metal phase in this class of "clean" superconductors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tumour seeking characteristics of TL-201 have been underutilized. The study was undertaken to evaluate the role of TL-201 scintigraphy in tumour imaging. METHODS: A total of 50 cases were studied over a period of 18 months (13 lymphomas, 11 breast carcinoma, 10 lung cancer, 6 of soft tissue sarcoma, 2 bone tumours and 4 cases each of thyroid and brain tumours). Thallium-201 chloride was injected IV in the dose range of 3-5 mCi. Imaging was done using Siemen's ECAM dual headed gamma camera. Mean tumour to background ratio (T/B ratio) was calculated for all the positive cases. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out. RESULTS: Findings revealed a sensitivity of 94.12%, specificity 87.5%, PPV 94.12%, NPV 87.50% and accuracy of 92% for TL-201 tumour imaging. The mean T/B ratio for the true positive cases at 10 min and at 3 h was 1.81 and 1.99 respectively, the difference being 0.18 (P value <0.001). Amongst them, the mean T/B ratios for low-grade tumours were 1.45 ± 0.32 at 10 min and 1.63 ± 0.38 after 3 h with difference of 0.176 (P < 0.001). For the high-grade tumours the ratios were 2.08 ± 0.35 and 2.26 ± 0.41 respectively with a difference of 0.186 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Thallium-201 scintigraphy is a useful tumour imaging modality in cases of thyroid, breast, brain, lung, soft tissue and bone tumours and lymphomas. A T/B ratio of 1.63 ± 0.38 in 3 h-delayed imaging is suggestive of low-grade tumours. For high-grade tumours a ratio of 2.26 ± 0.41 should be considered significant.

ABSTRACT

An atom-economical regioselective synthesis of N-substituted prolinamides or N-substituted piperidine-2-carboxamides via a metal-free decarboxylative multicomponent coupling between l-proline or pipecolic acid, aldehydes, and isonitriles is described. The cascade event involves sequential imine formation, decarboxylation, isonitrile insertion, and hydrolysis to afford the product in one-pot. Two of the prolinamides were found to display appreciable antithrombotic activity via inhibition of platelet aggregation.

Organo-modified Cloisite clays at varying contents were incorporated into poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) by melt blending. Nanoclay dispersion in films was first evaluated. The water transport properties were investigated by pervaporation and sorption measurements. A decrease of the water permeation flux was obtained when incorporating nanoparticles. This barrier effect is usually attributed to the increase of the diffusion pathways due to nanoclay-induced tortuosity effects. However, the diffusion coefficient was found to be dependent on water concentration, which generally reflects a plasticization effect of water. Besides, at 7 wt% of loading, an unexpected increase of water diffusivity was measured with a time-scale shift of the permeation flux. This was correlated with the formation of preferential diffusion pathways along interfacial regions due to free volumes existing between the EVA matrix and nanoclays as well as the water affinity of microfillers. As a consequence, water mass gain was found to be increased. The water-induced plasticization of sorbed water molecules was also highlighted through sorption kinetics. Eventually, some applications to these films in which water barrier behaviour is required were discussed.

ABSTRACT

A genome-wide scanning of Sorghum bicolor resulted in the identification of 25 SbHsf genes. Phylogenetic analysis shows the ortholog genes that are clustered with only rice, representing a common ancestor. Promoter analysis revealed the identification of different cis-acting elements that are responsible for abiotic as well as biotic stresses. Hsf domains like DBD, NLS, NES, and AHA have been analyzed for their sequence similarity and functional characterization. Tissue specific expression patterns of Hsfs in different tissues like mature embryo, seedling, root, and panicle were studied using real-time PCR. While Hsfs4 and 22 are highly expressed in panicle, 4 and 9 are expressed in seedlings. Sorghum plants were exposed to different abiotic stress treatments but no expression of any Hsf was observed when seedlings were treated with ABA. High level expression of Hsf1 was noticed during high temperature as well as cold stresses, 4 and 6 during salt and 5, 6, 10, 13, 19, 23 and 25 during drought stress. This comprehensive analysis of SbHsf genes will provide an insight on how these genes are regulated in different tissues and also under different abiotic stresses and help to determine the functions of Hsfs during drought and temperature stress tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Two rounds of integrated biological and behavioural assessment (IBBA) surveys were done among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Andhra Pradesh during 2006 and 2009. Avahan, the India AIDS initiative, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation implemented HIV prevention interventions among MSM starting around the time of the first round of IBBA. METHODS: Data on socio-demographic, sex behaviour characteristics and HIV status of MSM from the two IBBA rounds were used. Changes in the rates of consistent condom use over the past one month by MSM with various types of partners between the two rounds were assessed. Multivariate analysis was performed to assess associations between various factors and inconsistent condom use for sex with regular partners as well as HIV in MSM. RESULTS: A significant increase in consistent condom use by MSM was noted from 2006 to 2009 for paid male partners (19.5% to 93.8%), occasional male partners (13.2% to 86.2%), and paid female partners (25.9% to 94.2%). Consistent condom use with regular sex partners also increased but remained lower with regular male partner (75.8%) and very low with regular female partners (15.7%). MSM who used condoms inconsistently with their regular male partner were also more likely to use condoms inconsistently with their regular female partner. Multivariate analysis showed MSM who used condoms inconsistently with regular male partner had higher odds of HIV (odds ratio 1.8; 95% CI 1.2-2.7). MSM who received condoms from Avahan had the lowest odds (odds ratio 0.3; 95% CI 0.1-0.5) of inconsistent condom use with regular male partners. CONCLUSIONS: Condom use by MSM increased markedly after implementation of Avahan, though a causal association cannot be assessed with the available data. The relatively lower condom use with regular partners of MSM suggests that additional programme effort is needed to address this aspect specifically.

ABSTRACT

Recently,Bi1Te1has been proved to be a dual topological insulator (TI), a new subclass of symmetry-protected topological phases, and predicted to be higher order topological insulator (HOTI). Being a dual TI (DTI), Bi1Te1is said to host quasi-1D surface states (SSs) due to weak TI phase and topological crystalline insulating SSs at the same time. On the other hand, HOTI supports topologically protected hinge states. So,Bi1Te1is a unique platform to study the electrical signature of topological SS (TSS) of fundamentally different origins. Though there is a report of magneto-transport measurements on large-scale Bi1Te1thin films, the Bi1Te1single crystal is not studied experimentally to date. Even the doping effect in a DTI Bi1Te1is missing in the literature. In this regard, we performed the perpendicular and parallel field magneto-transport measurement on the exfoliated microflake of Bi1Te1and Sb-doped Bi1Te1single crystals, grown by the modified Bridgmann method. Ourmetallicsample shows the weak anti-localization behavior analyzed by the multi-channel Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation. We observed the presence of a pair of decoupled TSS. Further, we extracted the dephasing index (ß) from temperature (T)-dependence of phase coherence length (Lϕ), following the power law equation (Lϕ∝T-ß). The thickness-dependent value ofßindicates the transition in the dephasing mechanism from electron-electron to electron-phonon interaction with the increase in thickness, indicating the enhancement in the strength of bulk-surface coupling. Sb-doped system shows weakened bulk-surface coupling, hinted by the reduced dephasing indices.

ABSTRACT

We report the temperature-dependent structural characterization of type-II Dirac semimetal NiTe2in the form of a bulk single crystal and a nanoflake (200 nm thick). Detailed x-ray diffraction study along with Rietveld refinement analysis reveals superior crystallinity and linear thermal expansion coefficient (αT) of 5.56 × 10-6and 22.5 × 10-6K-1along a or b and c lattice directions, respectively. Temperature evolution of Raman spectra shows non-linear variations in the phonon frequency and full-width half maxima of the out-of-plane A1gand in-plane Egmodes. Raman mode E2g1, corresponding to an in-plane vibration, disappears on decreasing the thickness from bulk to nanoflake. Quantitative analysis with anharmonic model yields dominating electron-phonon interaction over phonon-phonon interaction mediated by three- and four-phonon processes.

ABSTRACT

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTI) host exotic topological phases such as quantized anomalous Hall insulating phase, arising due to the large magnetic exchange gap. However, the interplay of magnetism and topology in these systems in different temperature regimes remains elusive. In this work, we present the logarithmic temperature-dependence of conductivity for sub-100 nm thick exfoliated flakes of MTI MnBi2Te4 in the presence of out-of-plane magnetic fields and extracted the linear slope, κ. We observed a characteristic change, ∆κ ∼ -0.5 in the low-temperature regime, indicating the gapped Dirac surface state according to Lu-Shen theory. We also report the recovery of topological properties in the system via the weak-antilocalization (WAL) effect in the vicinity of antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition and in the paramagnetic regime. Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) analysis suggested the presence of topological surface states. Therefore, our study helps in understanding how intrinsic magnetism masks topological properties in an MTI as long as magnetic ordering persists. .

ABSTRACT

Roots from salt-susceptible ICSR-56 (SS) sorghum plants display metaxylem elements with thin cell walls and large diameter. On the other hand, roots with thick, lignified cell walls in the hypodermis and endodermis were noticed in salt-tolerant CSV-15 (ST) sorghum plants. The secondary wall thickness and number of lignified cells in the hypodermis have increased with the treatment of sodium chloride stress to the plants (STN). Lignin distribution in the secondary cell wall of sclerenchymatous cells beneath the lower epidermis was higher in ST leaves compared to the SS genotype. Casparian thickenings with homogenous lignin distribution were observed in STN roots, but inhomogeneous distribution was evident in SS seedlings treated with sodium chloride (SSN). Higher accumulation of K+ and lower Na+ levels were noticed in ST compared to the SS genotype. To identify the differentially expressed genes among SS and ST genotypes, transcriptomic analysis was carried out. Both the genotypes were exposed to 200 mM sodium chloride stress for 24 h and used for analysis. We obtained 70 and 162 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) exclusive to SS and SSN and 112 and 26 DEGs exclusive to ST and STN, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis unlocked the changes in metabolic pathways in response to salt stress. qRT-PCR was performed to validate 20 DEGs in each SSN and STN sample, which confirms the transcriptomic results. These results surmise that anatomical changes and higher K+/Na+ ratios are essential for mitigating salt stress in sorghum apart from the genes that are differentially up- and downregulated in contrasting genotypes.

ABSTRACT

A rapid, simple, accurate, and sensitive visible spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide in acidic buffer medium is reported. The proposed method is based on the oxidative coupling of Ampyrone with dibenzazepin hydrochloride by hydrogen peroxide in the buffer medium of pH 4.0 which is catalyzed by ferrous iron. The blue-colored product formed with maximum absorption at 620 nm was found to be stable for 2 h. Beer's law is obeyed for hydrogen peroxide concentration in the range of 0.03-0.42 µg ml(-1). The optimum reaction conditions and other important optical parameters are reported. The molar absorptive and Sandell's sensitivity are found to be 5.89 × 10(4) mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.57 g/cm(2), respectively. The interference due to diverse ions and complexing agents was studied. The method is successfully applied to the determination of hydrogen peroxide in green plants satisfactorily.

ABSTRACT

We report the stoichiometric epitaxial growth of the Eu2Ir2O7(111) thin film on YSZ substrate by a two-step solid phase epitaxy (SPE) method. An optimized post-annealing environment of the SPE was superior over the conventional air annealing procedure to get rid of the typical impurity phase, Eu2O3. The thickness-dependent structural study on Eu2Ir2O7(111) thin films suggests a systematic control of Ir/Eu stoichiometry in our films, which is otherwise difficult to achieve. In addition, the low-temperature electrical resistivity studies strongly support the claim. The power-law dependence analysis of the resistivity data exhibits a power exponent of 0.52 in 50 nm sample suggesting possible disorder-driven semimetallic charge transport in the 3D Weyl semimetallic (WSM) candidate Eu2Ir2O7. In addition, the all-in-all-out/all-out-all-in antiferromagnetic domains of Ir4+sublattice is verified using the field cooled magnetoresistance measurements at 2 K. Hall resistivity analysis indicate semimetallic hole carrier type dominance near the Fermi level up to the measured temperature range of 2-120 K. Altogether, our study reveals the ground state of stoichiometric Eu2Ir2O7(111) thin film, with an indirect tuning of the off-stoichiometry using thickness of the samples, which is of interest in the search of the predicted 3D WSM phase.

BACKGROUND: National Family Health Surveys (NFHS), the Indian counterpart of Demographic and Health Surveys, are the most recognized surveys in India and provide reliable measures of RCH indicators. But NFHS-3 figures on full immunization coverage rate for the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP) is very low compared with seven other major surveys on immunization carried out around the same time period. METHODS: The objective is to analyse factors responsible for low full-immunization coverage rate reported by NFHS-3 in AP. Data from three waves of NFHS and other surveys on immunization were used for analysis. RESULTS: Although full immunization coverage rate did not increase, other related indicators have shown an improvement between the second and third waves of NFHS. The full immunization coverage rate was significantly higher among card seen category as compared with card not seen category. CONCLUSIONS: Low full immunization coverage rate in AP as reported by NFHS-3, in all likelihood cannot be totally attributed to poor performance of the immunization programme. Probable reasons are issues related to methodological and logistic processes in NFHS, which include collection of data from a wider age group, differences in data collection methods, commitment levels and skill sets of investigator, fatigue factor and low percentage of cards seen by investigator.

ABSTRACT

The year 2019 has seen an emergence of the novel coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). Since the onset of the pandemic, biological and interdisciplinary research is being carried out across the world at a rapid pace to beat the pandemic. There is an increased need to comprehensively understand various aspects of the virus from detection to treatment options including drugs and vaccines for effective global management of the disease. In this review, we summarize the salient findings pertaining to SARS-CoV-2 biology, including symptoms, hosts, epidemiology, SARS-CoV-2 genome, and its emerging variants, viral diagnostics, host-pathogen interactions, alternative antiviral strategies and application of machine learning heuristics and artificial intelligence for effective management of COVID-19 and future pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Most mathematical models for the spread of disease use differential equations based on uniform mixing assumptions or ad hoc models for the contact process. Here we explore the use of dynamic bipartite graphs to model the physical contact patterns that result from movements of individuals between specific locations. The graphs are generated by large-scale individual-based urban traffic simulations built on actual census, land-use and population-mobility data. We find that the contact network among people is a strongly connected small-world-like graph with a well-defined scale for the degree distribution. However, the locations graph is scale-free, which allows highly efficient outbreak detection by placing sensors in the hubs of the locations network. Within this large-scale simulation framework, we then analyse the relative merits of several proposed mitigation strategies for smallpox spread. Our results suggest that outbreaks can be contained by a strategy of targeted vaccination combined with early detection without resorting to mass vaccination of a population.

Nanotechnology and nanoengineering includes a novel class of materials that are gaining significant recognition to pursuit technological/biological advances in diverse fields including, biology, medicine, electronics, engineering etc. due to their unique size- and shape-dependent intrinsic physicochemical, optoelectronic and biological properties. Characteristics such as high surface to volume ratios and quantum confinement results in materials that are qualitatively different from their bulk counterparts. These properties not only make them suitable for numerous applications in existing and emerging technologies, but also have outstanding role in many fields that provide inspiration for their fabrication. In Today's trend nanotechnology is spreading vigorously where researchers all over the world are focusing towards their synthesis and applications. Therefore, this review is helpful for the researchers in the field of nanobiotechnology/nanomedicine, providing a brief overview of nanotechnology, covering nanomaterial synthesis methods (with emphasis on environmentally benign greener approaches), their properties, and applications; such as drug delivery, bio-labeling, nanotoxicity etc. The influence of synthesis methods and surface coatings/stabilizing agents and their subsequent applications is discussed, and a broad outline on the biomedical applications into which they have been implemented is also presented.

ABSTRACT

The small heat shock proteins (sHsps/Hsp20s) are the molecular chaperones that maintain proper folding, trafficking and disaggregation of proteins under diverse abiotic stress conditions. In the present investigation, a genome-wide scan revealed the presence of a total of 47 sHsps in Sorghum bicolor (SbsHsps), distributed across 10 subfamilies, the major subfamily being P (plastid) group with 17 genes. Chromosomes 1 and 3 appear as the hot spot regions for SbsHsps, and majority of them were found acidic, hydrophilic, unstable and intron less. Interestingly, promoter analysis indicated that they are associated with both biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as plant development. Sorghum sHsps exhibited 15 paralogous and 20 orthologous duplications. Expression analysis of 15 genes selected from different subfamilies showed high transcript levels in roots and leaves implying that they are likely to participate in the developmental processes. SbsHsp genes were highly induced by diverse abiotic stresses inferring their critical role in mediating the environmental stress responses. Gene expression data revealed that SbsHsp-02 is a candidate gene expressed in all the tissues under varied stress conditions tested. Our results contribute to the understanding of the complexity of SbsHsp genes and help to analyse them further for functional validation.
