ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Epidemiological data of odontogenic tumours (OT) are conflicting, with significant differences among the countries. This study aims to evaluate incidence and prevalence of OTs in the Marche population in a period of 25 years, according to 4th Edition of WHO Classification. METHODS: In this study, only patients of Marche region treated for OTs were considered. Data were retrieved from Institute of Pathology, Marche Polytechnic University, Italy. Because this is the only tertiary referral centre for Head and Neck pathology within Marche region, the patient sample could be considered well representative of this area. From each case, age, sex, site, diagnosis and relapses were recorded. RESULTS: Overall, 100 patients were treated for OTs from 1994 to 2018 in Marche region. The annual incidence rate ranged from 0.13 to 0.39 per 100,000, while life prevalence was 6.50 per 100,000. Mean age of onset for primary OTs was 49.7 ± 20.1 years. Twenty-seven patients developed recurrences, showing a mean age of 54 ± 19.7 years and a mean recurrence time of 51.2 ± 34 months. CONCLUSION: This is the first epidemiological study on OTs in Italian population according to 4th Edition of WHO Classification. Although limited in their retrospective nature, these findings could accurately estimate epidemiology of OTs in Italy.

ABSTRACT

Severe gingival overgrowth is one of the most frequent side effects in renal transplant patients associated with assumption of cyclosporine A. Several associations with age, sex, dosage, duration of therapy or interval since transplantation have been hypothesized. The introduction of alternative immunosuppressant drugs have been suggested to permit better long-term transplant outcomes and a decrease in incidence of gingival overgrowth. The aim of the present paper is to summarize current knowledge regarding aetiology, pathogenesis and management of gingival overgrowth induced by Cyclosporine A.

ABSTRACT

The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) was a rare jawbone cyst described in 1988 as a distinct entity. This lesion can involve either jaw, and the anterior region of the mandible was the most commonly affected area. Clinical and radiographic findings were not specific, and the diagnosis of GOC can be extremely difficult due to the rarity of this lesion. The cyst presented a wall constituted by fibrous connective tissue and was lined by a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium of variable thickness. Large areas of the lining epithelium presented cylinder cells, sometimes ciliated. A variable amount of mucina was occasionally noted. Due to the strong similarities, this cyst can be easily misdiag-nosed as a central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMEC). Immunohistochemistry may be an aid in diagnosis; in fact has been demonstrated that there were differences in the expression of cytokeratins (CK) in GOC and CMEC. In this study, we reported a new case of GOC in a 38 year female patient. In addition, we carried out a review of 110 previous cases reported in literature.

INTRODUCTION: The pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint intracapsular disease (TMJI) is multifactorial and its diagnosis is not easy. In this work authors show two types of clinical analysis: the Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan 2 system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients (mean age of 24.5 years) with TMJI problem and 10 healthy matched subjects (mean age: 25.4 years) were selected. Analysis of TMJI was performed on each patient by means of Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan System II tests. RESULTS: Eight patients presented vertical symmetrical condylar distraction greater than healthy subjects (P-value<0.001). T-Scan showed a difference of Percentage of Force (POF) not greater than 5%. Seven patients showed sagittal shift greater than healthy subject (P-value<0.001). T-Scan records showed a difference of POF greater than 5%. Five non-healthy subjects presented sagittal, vertical, transverse shift greater than healthy subjects (P-value<0.001). T-Scan records show a difference of POF greater than 5%. CONCLUSION: In this work authors present a new method of analysis. CPI indicates discrepancy of the condyle position in CO from CR and T-Scan allows the operator to study all teeth contacts and occlusal forces taking place during dynamic jaw movement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) is widely used in chemical, tannery, building, and metal industries. More recently, it has been demonstrated that Cr induces oxidative stress in mouse brain. Nevertheless very few data exist on in vivo oxidative damage in humans exposed to Cr. METHODS: Changes in antioxidant parameters both in plasma (acid ascorbic redox state and total antioxidant capacity) and in red blood cells (glutathione (GSH) redox state) of 40 subjects (age 37.65 +/- 7.46; M/F 20/20) professionally exposed to Cr who were recruited from metal, chemistry, and building industries were evaluated. We also evaluated the levels of lipoperoxidation (thiobarbituric acid-reactive material, TBA-RM) and thiol levels in plasma to assess the extent of oxidative stress state. To evaluate Cr exposure rate, we measured urinary-chromium (U-Cr) by an electrothermic atomization-atomic absorption spectrometry (ETA-AAS) method. RESULTS: In this study, we found that Cr exposure induced a decrease both in GSH (P < 0.0005) and GSH/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) ratio (P < 0.0001) in red blood cells from workers with respect to control subjects. Furthermore, we also demonstrated a significant decrease of plasma acid ascorbic levels (45.7 +/- 14.9 vs. 53.5 +/- 16.5 micromol/L; P < 0.05) and in total plasma antioxidant capacity (1,126.3 +/- 212.2 vs. 1,266.9 +/- 207.8 micromol/L; P < 0.05) in subjects exposed to Cr. No difference was found with regard to TBA-RM and thiol levels. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that in humans, an oxidative stress occurs for Cr exposures as low as those considered safe. This oxidative stress appears to be able to affect intracellular and plasmatic antioxidant defense.

El sobrecrecimiento gingival severo es uno de los efectos adversos más frecuentes en los pacientes con transplante renal asociado al suministro de ciclosporina A. Se han realizado hipótesis sobre diversas asociaciones con la edad, sexo, dosis, duración de la terapia o intervalo desde el transplante. Se ha propuesto la introducción de la alternativa de drogas inmunosupresoras para permitir mejores resultados a largo plazo del transplante y la disminución en la incidencia de sobrecrecimiento gingival. El objetivo del presente estudio es resumir el conocimiento actual, observando la etiología, patogénesis y dirección del sobrecrecimiento gingival inducido por la ciclosporina A
