ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are at an increased risk of poor oral health compared to the general population. However, little is known about the related barriers and facilitators experienced by these individuals within the hospital setting. OBJECTIVES: Understand the oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices of people with SCIs, barriers and facilitators to managing their oral health, and recommendations to improve oral care at acute/rehabilitation hospital settings. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 participants, from a major metropolitan hospital in Sydney, Australia. The interviews were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Three themes were constructed. Participants believed that the onus was on them to manage their oral health. Individuals also had limited knowledge of its importance to general health, and placed a lower priority on oral health compared to other aspects of health. All participants identified a combination of factors, such as cost, time, resources and prior negative experiences, that contributed to the neglect of their oral care. Participants also discussed the need of support from the multidisciplinary team and family/carers to facilitate oral care and identified various appropriate oral health education formats. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted some areas where oral health knowledge among people with SCIs could be improved. It also identified the need for oral health training for the multidisciplinary team, as well as carers, to better integrate oral care during rehabilitation in the hospital. The development of oral health interventions would need to utilise a co-design approach to best support clients and their carers to facilitate oral care self-management.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of immediate pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and tap and inject in eyes with postcataract surgery endophthalmitis. METHODS: Patients presenting with acute postcataract surgery endophthalmitis and visual acuity between ≥ hand movement and <6/18 were randomized to receive either PPV (Group A) or tap and inject (Group B). RESULTS: There were 26 and 31 eyes in Group A and Group B, respectively. The final mean visual acuity at 6 weeks [0.14 (Snellen equivalent 6/7.5) versus 0.22 (Snellen equivalent 6/9.5) LogMAR in Groups A and B, respectively; P = 0.2] was similar. However, eyes in Group A had significantly greater mean letter gain in vision compared with Group B (66.36 vs. 43.36, P = 0.02), and more eyes in Group A (88%) than in Group B (65%) attained a visual acuity of ≥ 6/18 ( P = 0.06). Eyes in Group B needed more reinterventions including delayed vitrectomy after tap and inject than those in Group A (39% vs. 8%; P = 0.09). On subgroup analysis, the mean visual acuity at the final follow-up was significantly better in the immediate PPV group compared with the delayed PPV group ( P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: PPV resulted in earlier recovery, lesser interventions, and greater change in visual acuity than tap and inject in eyes with postcataract surgery endophthalmitis presenting with visual acuity of ≥HM.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Protocol for a multi-centre randomised controlled trial (the SCI-MT trial). OBJECTIVES: To determine whether 10 weeks of intensive motor training enhances neurological recovery in people with recent spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING: Fifteen spinal injury units in Australia, Scotland, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium. METHODS: A pragmatic randomised controlled trial will be undertaken. Two hundred and twenty people with recent SCI (onset in the preceding 10 weeks, American Spinal Injuries Association Impairment Scale (AIS) A lesion with motor function more than three levels below the motor level on one or both sides, or an AIS C or D lesion) will be randomised to receive either usual care plus intensive motor training (12 h of motor training per week for 10 weeks) or usual care alone. The primary outcome is neurological recovery at 10 weeks, measured with the Total Motor Score from the International Standards for Neurological Classification of SCI. Secondary outcomes include global measures of motor function, ability to walk, quality of life, participants' perceptions about ability to perform self-selected goals, length of hospital stay and participants' impressions of therapeutic benefit at 10 weeks and 6 months. A cost-effectiveness study and process evaluation will be run alongside the trial. The first participant was randomised in June 2021 and the trial is due for completion in 2025. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the SCI-MT Trial will guide recommendations about the type and dose of inpatient therapy that optimises neurological recovery in people with SCI. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Developing effective and generalizable predictive models is critical for disease prediction and clinical decision-making, often requiring diverse samples to mitigate population bias and address algorithmic fairness. However, a major challenge is to retrieve learning models across multiple institutions without bringing in local biases and inequity, while preserving individual patients' privacy at each site. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand the issues of bias and fairness in the machine learning process used in the predictive health care domain. We proposed a software architecture that integrates federated learning and blockchain to improve fairness, while maintaining acceptable prediction accuracy and minimizing overhead costs. METHODS: We improved existing federated learning platforms by integrating blockchain through an iterative design approach. We used the design science research method, which involves 2 design cycles (federated learning for bias mitigation and decentralized architecture). The design involves a bias-mitigation process within the blockchain-empowered federated learning framework based on a novel architecture. Under this architecture, multiple medical institutions can jointly train predictive models using their privacy-protected data effectively and efficiently and ultimately achieve fairness in decision-making in the health care domain. RESULTS: We designed and implemented our solution using the Aplos smart contract, microservices, Rahasak blockchain, and Apache Cassandra-based distributed storage. By conducting 20,000 local model training iterations and 1000 federated model training iterations across 5 simulated medical centers as peers in the Rahasak blockchain network, we demonstrated how our solution with an improved fairness mechanism can enhance the accuracy of predictive diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified the technical challenges of prediction biases faced by existing predictive models in the health care domain. To overcome these challenges, we presented an innovative design solution using federated learning and blockchain, along with the adoption of a unique distributed architecture for a fairness-aware system. We have illustrated how this design can address privacy, security, prediction accuracy, and scalability challenges, ultimately improving fairness and equity in the predictive health care domain.

ABSTRACT

Chitosan is a natural polyfunctional polymer that can be modified to achieve compounds with tailored properties for targeting and treating different cancers. In this study, we report the development and anticancer potential of phosphorylated galactosylated chitosan (PGC). The synthesized compound was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy. The interaction of PGC with asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPR) and cellular internalization in HepG2 cells was studied using in silico and uptake studies respectively. PGC was evaluated for its metal chelating, ferric ion reducing, superoxide, and lipid peroxide (LPO) inhibiting potential. Further, anticancer therapeutic potential of PGC was evaluated against N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocellular carcinoma in a mice model. After development of cancer, PGC was administered to the treatment group (0.5 mg/kg bw, intravenously), once a week for 4 weeks. Characterization studies of PGC revealed successful phosphorylation and galactosylation of chitosan. A strong interaction of PGC with ASGP-receptors was predicted by computational studies and cellular internalization studies demonstrated 98.76 ± 0.53% uptake of PGC in the HepG2 cells. A good metal chelating, ferric ion reducing, and free radical scavenging activity was demonstrated by PGC. The anticancer therapeutic potential of PGC was evident from the observation that PGC treatment increased number of tumor free animals (50%) (6/12) and significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered tumor multiplicity as compared to untreated tumor group.

ABSTRACT

Skin cancer is among the fastest-growing cancers with an excellent prognosis, if detected early. However, the current method of diagnosis by visual inspection has several disadvantages such as overlapping tumor characteristics, subjectivity, low sensitivity, and specificity. Hence, several adjunctive diagnostic techniques such as thermal imaging, optical imaging, ultrasonography, tape stripping methods, and electrical impedance imaging are employed along with visual inspection to improve the diagnosis. Electrical impedance-based skin cancer detection depends upon the variations in electrical impedance characteristics of the transformed cells. The information provided by this technique is fundamentally different from other adjunctive techniques and thus has good prospects. Depending on the stage, type, and location of skin cancer, various impedance-based devices have been developed. These devices when used as an adjunct to visual methods have increased the sensitivity and specificity of skin cancer detection up to 100% and 87%, respectively, thus demonstrating their potential to minimize unnecessary biopsies. In this review, the authors track the advancements and progress made in this technique for the detection of skin cancer, focusing mainly on the advantages and limitations in the clinical setting. © 2022 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. OBJECTIVES: To identify common problems across key domains of functioning, health and wellbeing, as well as evaluate self-reported quality of life (QoL) by people with SCI, examining differences by age, gender, injury characteristics and level of mobility. SETTING: Data from four state-wide SCI clinical services, one government insurance agency and three not-for-profit consumer organisations. METHODS: Participants were 18 years or over with SCI and at least 12 months post-injury, recruited between Mar'18 and Jan'19. The Aus-InSCI questionnaire comprised 193 questions, including socio-demographics, SCI characteristics, body functions and structures, activities and participation, environmental and personal factors, and appraisal of health and well-being. General linear model was used to examine differences in functioning and QoL. RESULTS: Participants (mean age 57 years, range 19-94 years) with tetraplegia and/or complete injuries had more health problems, activity/participation problems and environmental barriers. However, self-rated overall QoL did not differ for injury level or completeness. Participants with more recent injuries exhibited lower independence levels, more mental health problems and poorer satisfaction with self and their living conditions. Major activity/participation problems related to intimate relationships and accessing public transportation. Less than half of the working age population were engaged in paid work. The top two environmental barriers frequently related to accessing public places or homes and unfavourable climatic conditions. CONCLUSIONS: This large, comprehensive community survey draws a detailed picture of the lived experience of people with SCI in Australia, identifying priority needs, gaps in services and barriers to achieving a full and satisfying life.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and nature of human embryonic aneuploidy based on the preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), the distribution of aneuploidy across the individual chromosomes, and their relationship to maternal age. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at a single center. The study includes subjects who opted for PGT-A in their in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle from 2016 to 2020. PGT-A was performed on 1501 embryos from 488 patients in 535 cycles. PGT-A was performed using NGS-based technique on Ion Torrent PGM (Life Technologies). Analysis was performed to determine the (i) frequency of the aneuploidy, (ii) the chromosome most commonly affected, (iii) relationship between maternal age and the rate of aneuploidy, and (iv) incidence of segmental aneuploidy. RESULTS: The overall frequency of aneuploidy was observed to be 46.8%. The incidence of aneuploidy rate was ~ 28% at maternal age < 30 years which steadily increased to ~ 67% in women above 40 years. High frequency of aneuploidy was observed in chromosomes 16, 22, 21, and 15. Segmental abnormalities, involving loss or gain of chromosomal fragments, were observed at a frequency of 5.3%, and highest incidence of segmental gain was observed on the q-arm of chromosome 9. CONCLUSION: The study provides important information regarding the frequency of the aneuploidy in IVF cohort and the most frequent chromosomal abnormality. The study further emphasizes the relationship between maternal age and aneuploidy. This study has important implications which help clinicians and genetic counselors in providing information in patient counseling.

ABSTRACT

There has been a long-standing interest in Raman spectroscopic investigation of optically trapped single functional cells. Optical trapping using a Gaussian beam has helped researchers for decades to investigate single cells suspended in a physiological medium. However, complete and sensitive probing of single cells demands further advancements in experimental methods. Herein, we propose optical trapping and simultaneous micro-Raman spectroscopy of red blood cells (RBCs) in an unconventional face-on orientation using an optical vortex beam. Using this novel method, we are successful in comparing the conformational state of hemoglobin (Hb) molecules near the RBC membrane and inside the bulk of the cell. This method enabled us to successfully probe the oxy/deoxy ratio of Hb molecules near the RBC membrane and inside the bulk of the cell. Because of the face-on orientation, the Raman spectra of RBCs acquired using a vortex beam have a significant contribution from membrane components compared to that recorded using the Gaussian beam.

ABSTRACT

The 5G wireless communication network is currently faced with the challenge of limited data speed exacerbated by the proliferation of billions of data-intensive applications. To address this problem, researchers are developing cutting-edge technologies for the envisioned 6G wireless communication standards to satisfy the escalating wireless services demands. Though some of the candidate technologies in the 5G standards will apply to 6G wireless networks, key disruptive technologies that will guarantee the desired quality of physical experience to achieve ubiquitous wireless connectivity are expected in 6G. This article first provides a foundational background on the evolution of different wireless communication standards to have a proper insight into the vision and requirements of 6G. Second, we provide a panoramic view of the enabling technologies proposed to facilitate 6G and introduce emerging 6G applications such as multi-sensory-extended reality, digital replica, and more. Next, the technology-driven challenges, social, psychological, health and commercialization issues posed to actualizing 6G, and the probable solutions to tackle these challenges are discussed extensively. Additionally, we present new use cases of the 6G technology in agriculture, education, media and entertainment, logistics and transportation, and tourism. Furthermore, we discuss the multi-faceted communication capabilities of 6G that will contribute significantly to global sustainability and how 6G will bring about a dramatic change in the business arena. Finally, we highlight the research trends, open research issues, and key take-away lessons for future research exploration in 6G wireless communication.

ABSTRACT

The spread of the COVID-19 virus continues to increase fatality rates and exhaust the capacity of healthcare providers. Efforts to prevent transmission of the virus among humans remains a high priority. The current efforts to quarantine involve social distancing, monitoring and tracking the infected patients. However, the spread of the virus is too rapid to be contained only by manual and inefficient human contact tracing activities. To address this challenge, we have developed Connect, a blockchain empowered digital contact tracing platform that can leverage information on positive cases and notify people in their immediate proximity which would thereby reduce the rate at which the infection could spread. This would particularly be effective if sufficient people use the platform and benefit from the targeted recommendations. The recommendations would be made in a privacy-preserving fashion and contain the spread of the virus without the need for an extended period of potential lockdown. Connect is an identity wallet platform which will keep user digital identities and user activity trace data on a blockchain platform using Self-Sovereign Identity(SSI) proofs. User activities include the places he/she has travelled, the country of origin he/she came from, travel and dispatch updates from the airport etc. With these activity trace records, Connect platform can easily identify suspected patients who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus and take precautions before spreading it. By storing digital identities and activity trace records on blockchain-based SSI platform, Connect addresses the common issues in centralized cloud-based storage platforms (e.g. lack of data immutability, lack of traceability).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To describe the demographics, clinical features, and treatment outcomes with systemic steroids in eyes presenting with post-fever retinitis (PFR) from Central India. METHODS: Single-center, retrospective analysis of 147 eyes of 98 PFR cases between 2011 and 2019. RESULTS: Mean age of the study cohort was 33.46 ± 12.76 years, with 72 males and 26 females. The mean interval between the onset of fever and the diminution of vision was 21.10 ± 13.54 days (range 0-60 days). The number of PFR cases increased over the nine years with 89 cases (90.1%) presenting during winters. Unilateral involvement was seen in 49 cases, while 49 had bilateral involvement. Clinical characteristics included: multifocal retinitis (n = 122; 61.2%), hemorrhages (n = 132; 89.8%), disc edema (n = 57; 38.8%), anterior chamber reaction (n = 28; 19%), and vitritis (n = 103; 70.1%). Treatment included intravenous followed by oral steroids in 70 patients and oral steroids exclusively in 23; five patients denied treatment. The visual acuity improved from 1.09 ± 0.52 LogMAR to 0.29 ± 0.42 LogMAR (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There has been an increase in the prevalence of PFR cases over the last decade with clustering during the winters. Multifocal retinitis, retinal hemorrhages, and vitritis were the most common clinical findings in our series. The retinitis resolved with improvement in vision following steroid therapy in all eyes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Studies report rates of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in spinal cord injury (SCI) range between 10 and 60%. This broad estimate of MCI in SCI is most likely a result of: (i) inconsistent operationalization of MCI; (ii) heterogeneity among individuals with SCI; (iii) failure to account for MCI subtypes, thereby adding to the heterogeneity of samples; and, (iv) poor control for traumatic brain injury (TBI) that obscures differentiation of MCI attributable to TBI versus other factors. There is a paucity of longitudinal studies following the course of MCI in SCI, and none that account for multiple predictors of MCI, including interactions among predictors. METHODS: An inception cohort longitudinal study will assess approximately 100 individuals aged 17-80 years with acute SCI, with measures taken at three timepoints (baseline, 3 months post-baseline, and 12 months post-injury). Data relevant to medical care received within the first 24-48 h of presentation to the emergency department will be analysed, as will measures of cognition, injury characteristics, medical history, personal factors, psychological status, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life. Latent class mixture modelling will determine trajectories for the primary outcome of interest, cognitive functioning and its subtypes, and secondary outcomes of interest such as depression. Multiple regression analyses will identify predictors of MCI and its subtypes. DISCUSSION: The prospective design will reveal change in cognitive functioning across time and unveil different outcome trajectories; thus addressing the lack of knowledge on trajectories of MCI and MCI subtypes in SCI. Through subtyping MCI, we hope to yield groups of cognitively impaired individuals with SCI that are potentially more homogenous and thereby stable and predictable. This is the first study to capture emergency department and acute care diagnostic evidence of mild TBI, which has been poorly controlled in previous studies. Our study will also be the first to distinguish the contribution of TBI from other factors to the development of MCI in individuals with SCI. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was prospectively registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry ( ACTRN12619001702101 ) on 3rd December 2019.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, edge computing has emerged as a new concept in the computing paradigm that empowers several future technologies, such as 5G, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and the Internet of Things (IoT), by providing cloud computing facilities, as well as services to the end users. However, open communication among the entities in an edge based IoT environment makes it vulnerable to various potential attacks that are executed by an adversary. Device authentication is one of the prominent techniques in security that permits an IoT device to authenticate mutually with a cloud server with the help of an edge node. If authentication is successful, they establish a session key between them for secure communication. To achieve this goal, a novel device authentication and key management mechanism for the edge based IoT environment, called the lightweight authentication and key management scheme for the edge based IoT environment (LDAKM-EIoT), was designed. The detailed security analysis and formal security verification conducted by the widely used "Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA)" tool prove that the proposed LDAKM-EIoT is secure against several attack vectors that exist in the infrastructure of the edge based IoT environment. The elaborated comparative analysis of the proposed LDAKM-EIoT and different closely related schemes provides evidence that LDAKM-EIoT is more secure with less communication and computation costs. Finally, the network performance parameters are calculated and analyzed using the NS2 simulation to demonstrate the practical facets of the proposed LDAKM-EIoT.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) evaluated in CT imaging as well as Rotterdam CT Score (RCTS) are proven independent predictors of outcome in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). To date, no study has correlated ONSD on admission CT scan with RCTS. MATERIAL/METHODS: Retrospective cohort study comprised of consecutive patients undergoing CT imaging for traumatic brain injury recruited between January and October 2015. Bilateral ONSD was measured 3 mm behind the eyeball in axial and sagittal planes and mean value was calculated. RCTS was assessed on the same CT images, bias was eliminated by blinding RCTS to ONSD measurement. RESULTS: 150 patients were included; mean age in the group was 42.94±16.7 years. ONSD in mild TBI, RCTS 2 and 3 were 3.3 mm (SD 0.39 mm) and 4.1 mm (0.047 mm), respectively. Mean ONSD in moderate and severe TBI (RCTS score 4 and above) was 4.83 mm and above, SD 0.4 mm. Mean ONSD correlated with occurrence of diffuse cerebral oedema, presence of subdural and extradural hematoma; however in isolation there was no statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: Higher ONSD was observed in patients with moderate and severe TBI, correlating with admission RCTS of 4 and above. Subsequent increase in ONSD was also found with increase in RCTS. ONSD could serve as an initial triage tool in the emergency department as well as a method of determining the need for sequential CT in patients with mild TBI.

ABSTRACT

For many centuries, traditional medicine has played an essential role in health care. The treatment of many illnesses, including cancer, has greatly benefited from using herbal remedies derived from traditional medicine. The bioactive compounds, such as curcumin, silibinin, berberine, ginseng, and others present in traditional medicine have shown a wide range of properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-oxidant as well as potent anti-cancer properties both in laboratory studies and animal experiments (in vitro and in vivo). In this review, we mainly emphasized the anticancer role of bioactive compounds present in traditional medicine, such as curcumin, cardamonin, piperine, berberine, ginseng, silibinin, epigallocatechin gallate, and asafoetida. We also discussed molecular evidence of these compounds in chemoprevention and anticancer effects. These compounds have the potential to interfere with cancer growth, proliferation, metastasis, and angiogenesis and induce apoptosis by targeting different pathways and the cell cycle. This review article also focuses on how these compounds can help overcome drug resistance and enhance the availability of other clinically approved drugs. The usage of these compounds synergistically with other forms of treatment is also of great fascination to new and upcoming research. Finally, we have discussed the bioavailability of these compounds and strategies employed to improve them so their full potential can be exploited.

ABSTRACT

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are extensively used as carriers in targeted drug delivery and has several advantages in the field of magnetic hyperthermia, chemodynamic therapy and magnet assisted radionuclide therapy. The characteristics of SPIONs can be tailored to deliver drugs into tumor via "passive targeting" and they can also be coated with tissue-specific agents to enhance tumor uptake via "active targeting". In our earlier studies, we developed HCC specific targeting agent- "phosphorylated galactosylated chitosan"(PGC) for targeting asialoglycoprotein receptors. Considering their encouraging results, in this study we developed a multifunctional targeting system- "phosphorylated galactosylated chitosan-coated magnetic nanoparticles"(PGCMNPs) for targeting HCC. PGCMNPs were synthesized by co-precipitation method and characterized by DLS, XRD, TEM, VSM, elemental analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. PGCMNPs were evaluated for in vitro antioxidant properties, uptake in HepG2 cells, biodistribution, in vivo toxicity and were also evaluated for anticancer therapeutic potential against NDEA-induced HCC in mice model in terms of tumor status, electrical properties, antioxidant defense status and apoptosis. The characterization studies confirmed successful formation of PGCMNPs with superparamagnetic properties. The internalization studies demonstrated (99-100)% uptake of PGCMNPs in HepG2 cells. These results were also supported by biodistribution studies in which increased iron content (296%) was noted inside the hepatocytes. Further, PGCMNPs exhibited no in vivo toxicity. The anticancer therapeutic potential was evident from observation that PGCMNPs treatment decreased tumor bearing animals (41.6%) and significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered tumor multiplicity. Overall, this study indicated that PGCMNPs with improved properties are efficiently taken-up by hepatoma cells and has therapeutic potential against HCC. Further, this agent can be tagged with 32P and hence can offer multimodal cancer treatment options via radiation ablation as well as magnetic hyperthermia.

The maternal-fetal interaction has been hypothesized to involve the human leucocyte antigen (HLA). It has been suggested that excessive HLA antigen sharing between spouses is a mechanism causing maternal hyporesponsiveness to paternal antigens encountered during pregnancy and thus leading to a miscarriage. Participants in this retrospective study are RIF and RPL couples who visited Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital, Bangalore, India from November 2019 to September 2022. A total of 40 couples with RIF and 195 couples with RPL are included in the study. We observed that the DQB1*02:01:01 allele is associated with an increase in risk of both RIF and RPL, while the C*12:02:01 allele increases risk of only RPL. On the contrary, DQB1*02:02:01 and DQB1*06:03 alleles appear to be protective against both RPL and RIF. In addition, the C*07:02:01 allele was observed to be protective against RPL. In conclusion, C*12:02:01 and DQB1*02:01:01 could play a major role in RPL which is consistent with other studies, while DQB1*02:01:01 is the risk allele in our RIF group. The protective alleles C*07:02:01 in the RPL group, DQB1*02:02:01, and DQB1*06:03 in both RIF and RPL, were discovered for the first time. Allele frequencies will vary in population-based studies depending on the ethnicities of the cohort. Meta-analysis and antibody testing will provide additional insights on whether and how this data can be adopted into clinical practices.

ABSTRACT

Cervical cancer (CC) poses a significant health threat in women globally. MicroRNA clusters (MCs), comprising multiple miRNA-encoding genes, are pivotal in gene regulation. Various factors, including circular RNA and DNA methylation, govern MC expression. Dysregulated MC expression correlates strongly with CC development via promoting the acquisition of cancer hallmarks. Certain MCs show promise for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy selection due to their distinct expression patterns in normal, premalignant and tumor tissues. This review explains the regulation and biological functions of MCs and highlights the clinical relevance of abnormal MC expression in CC.


Cervical cancer is a major global health concern, mostly caused by human papillomavirus infection, resulting in a high number of new cases and fatalities annually. This review examines the role of specific genetic variables known as microRNA clusters (MCs) in the development and progression of cervical cancer. The MCs harbor many microRNAs that control genes related to tumor proliferation, infiltration and dissemination. Understanding the functioning of these MCs can aid in early diagnosis of cervical cancer and predicting its patterns of behavior. We explore the potential benefits of assessing MC expression levels in cancer staging and prognosis, and the development of diagnostic tools and treatments. Targeting these molecular targets could provide interesting opportunities for future cancer treatments.
