ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The effect of nutritional status on osteosarcopenia (OS) and major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) among the elderly is still unclear. So we aimed to compare the efficacy of the Mini-Nutrition Assessment-Short Form (MNA-sf), the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) for predicting OS and MOF among the elderly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 409 participants were enrolled in this prospective study. Blood biochemical indexes, nutritional status, and bone- and muscle-related examinations were assessed at initial visit to the outpatient. Participants were divided into 4 groups: (1) control; (2) osteopenia/osteoporosis; (3) sarcopenia; (4) osteosarcopenia, and then followed for 5 years, recording the occurrence time of MOF. RESULTS: The frequency values of osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and OS, at baseline, were respectively 13.4, 16.1, and 12% among the study samples. Correlation analysis showed that nutritional status scores were associated with body mass index, handgrip strength, albumin, bone mineral density, and physical functions. According to multivariate models, poor nutritional status was significantly associated with a higher risk of OS and MOF (P < 0.05). Survival analysis showed that the MOF rate in malnutrition group was significantly higher than normal nutrition group (P < 0.05). The receiver operator characteristic curve shows that the value of MNA-sf to diagnose OS and MOF is greater (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The poor nutritional status was associated with a higher risk of both OS and MOF. MNA-sf showed a superior diagnostic power for OS and MOF among the elderly. Early nutrition assessments and interventions may be key strategies to prevent OS and fractures.

ABSTRACT

Intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD) is the major cause of low back pain. Alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG), an important intermediate in energy metabolism, has various functions, including epigenetic regulation, maintenance of redox homeostasis, and antiaging, but whether it can ameliorate IVDD has not been reported. Here, we examined the impacts of long-term administration of α-KG on aging-associated IVDD in adult rats. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that α-KG supplementation effectively ameliorated IVDD in rats and the senescence of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs). α-KG supplementation significantly attenuated senescence, apoptosis, and matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) protein expression, and it increased the synthesis of aggrecan and collagen II in IL-1ß-treated NPCs. In addition, α-KG supplementation reduced the levels of IL-6, phosphorylated JAK2 and STAT3, and the nuclear translocation of p-STAT3 in IL-1ß-induced degenerating NPCs. The effects of α-KG were enhanced by AG490 in NPCs. The underlying mechanism may involve the inhibition of JAK2/STAT3 phosphorylation and the reduction of IL-6 expression. Our findings may help in the development of new therapeutic strategies for IVDD.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) exerted its protective effect on nucleus pulposus cells' (NPCs) degeneration by inhibiting the senescence-associated secretory phenotype and extracellular matrix degradation. The possible mechanism may be associated with negatively regulating the JAK2/STAT3 phosphorylation and the decreased IL-6 expression, which could be explained by a blockage of the positive feedback control loop between IL-6 and JAK2/STAT3 pathway.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify the relationship between iris -ciliary angle (ICA) and the vault. Additionally, we also seek to investigate the chain mediating effects of the ICL haptic related factors on this relationship. METHODS: The participants were categorized into three groups according to the ICA value as follows: low ICA group (< 35°); moderate ICA group (35°-70°); high ICA group (> 70°). We compared the preoperative ocular characteristics and postoperative examinations among the three groups. Multiple variable stepwise regression was performed to establish the vault prediction formula. The Process V4.0 in SPSS and Hayes's PROCESS model 6 was conducted to further elucidate the mediating effects of the final tip point of ICL haptic and the ICL arc-lens arc on the relationship between the ICA and vault. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the positions of the ICL haptic among three ICA groups. The regression vault equation was Vault = 679.42-7.26*TCA + 192.30*ACD-196.37*CLR + 73.21* STS(horizontal).A significant negative correlation was found between the ICA and vault (P < 0.01).The chain mediation model revealed that the final tip point of ICL haptic and the ICL arc-Lens arc were sequential mediators between ICA and vault (effect = -1.63, 95% CI = -2.72--0.73). CONCLUSION: The ICA was associated with vault via the mediation effect of the final tip point of the ICL haptic and the ICL arc -lens arc. Assessment of ICL haptic related parameters adds significant information to interpret the vault after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-induced myocardial injury (SIMI) is a common organ dysfunction and is associated with higher mortality in patients with sepsis. We aim to construct a nomogram prediction model to assess the 28-day mortality in patients with SIMI. . METHOD: We retrospectively extracted data from Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) open-source clinical database. SIMI was defined by Troponin T (higher than the 99th percentile of upper reference limit value) and patients with cardiovascular disease were excluded. A prediction model was constructed in the training cohort by backward stepwise Cox proportional hazards regression model. The concordance index (C-index), area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), net reclassification improvement (NRI), integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), calibration plotting and decision-curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the nomogram. RESULTS: 1312 patients with sepsis were included in this study and 1037 (79%) of them presented with SIMI. The multivariate Cox regression analysis in all septic patients revealed that SIMI was independently associated with 28-day mortality of septic patients. The risk factors of diabetes, Apache II score, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive support, Troponin T and creatinine were included in the model and a nomogram was constructed based on the model. The C-index, AUC, NRI, IDI, calibration plotting and DCA showed that the performance of the nomogram was better than the single SOFA score and Troponin T. CONCLUSION: SIMI is related to the 28-day mortality of septic patients. The nomogram is a well-performed tool to predict accurately the 28-day mortality in patients with SIMI.

BACKGROUND: The risk of subsequent vertebral fractures (SVF) after the primary vertebral fracture cannot be explained by lower bone mineral density (BMD) alone. Computed tomography (CT) measurements of paravertebral muscle density (PMD) are recognized radiographic markers used to predict physical function, fragile fractures. AIMS: This study aims to investigate the relationship between PMD and the risk of SVF in cohorts of postmenopausal women, and to determine if combining both PMD and BMD measures derived from CT can improve the accuracy of predicting SVF. METHODS: This study enrolled 305 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 88 for 3 years of follow-up studies. Trabecular attenuation (Hounsfield units, HU) was measured at L1 level and muscle attenuation of paravertebral muscle at L3 level on preoperative lumbar CT scans to determine the L1 BMD and L3 PMD. Kaplan-Meier analysis was applied to evaluate SVF-free survival. The hazard ratios (HRs) of PMD for SVF events were estimated with the Cox proportional hazards model. The predictive values of L1 BMD and L3 PMD for SVF were quantified using the Receiver-Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULT: During the 3 years of follow-up studies, 88 patients (28.9%) suffered an SVF. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that an L3 PMD threshold of 32 HU had a sensitivity of 89.8% and a specificity of 62% for the prediction of SVF. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that L3 PMD ≤ 32 HU was significantly associated with lower SVF-free survival (p < 0.001; log-rank test). After adjusting for age, BMI, diabetes, postoperative osteoporosis treatment, handgrip strength, L1 BMD, multivariate analyses also indicated a persistent modest effect of L3 PMD on SVF-free survival. The area under the ROC curve of L3 PMD and L1 BMD, combined to predict the risk of SVF, was 0.790, which was significantly higher than the value for L1 BMD alone (0.735). L3 PMD and L1 BMD significantly improved the accuracy of SVF risk prediction compared with L1 BMD alone, which was confirmed by reclassification improvement measures. The inclusion of handgrip strength and postoperative osteoporosis treatment in the model further improved SVF prediction accuracy, and PMD remained significant in the model. CONCLUSION: Decreased L3 PMD is an independent risk predictor of SVF. Combined CT-based L1 BMD and L3 PMD can significantly improve the accuracy of predicting the risk of SVF in postmenopausal women who have suffered prior osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

ABSTRACT

Heat stress (HS) affects the development of porcine gametes and embryos negatively, induces the decrease of reproductive ability significantly, threatens global pig production. Ginsenoside Re (GRe), is a main bioactive component of ginseng, shows very specific anti-apoptotic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. To investigate the alleviating effect of GRe on the in vitro maturation of porcine oocyte under the HS, the polar body extrusion rate, intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH), ATP content, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were assessed. For the current study, porcine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) randomly divided into four groups: the control, GRe, HS and HS + GRe group. The results showed that HS inhibited the cumulus cell expansion and polar body extrusion rate, the levels of GSH and MMP, the ATP content, the gene expression of Nrf2 of porcine oocytes and the parthenogenetic activation (PA) embryo development competence, but GRe treatment could partly neutralize these adverse effects. Furthermore, HS increased the ROS formation and percentage of apoptosis, the gene expression of HSP90, CASP3 and CytoC of porcine oocytes, but GRe could weaken the effect on Cyto C and BAX expression induced by HS. Taken together, these results showed that the presence of GRe during in vitro maturation protects porcine oocytes from HS. These findings lay a foundation for GRe may be used as a potential protective drug to protect porcine oocytes against HS damage.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between handgrip strength (HGS) and the risk of subsequent vertebral fracture (SVF) after percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 340 patients aged over 50 years with osteoporotic vertebral fracture were enrolled in this 3-year follow-up investigation. HGS was measured with a hand-held dynamometer before PVA. Female patients and male patients were grouped using the HGS threshold recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to evaluate SVF-free survival. The hazard ratios (HRs) of HGS for SVF events were estimated with the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: During the follow-up period, a total of 93 patients (27.4%) experienced SVF. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the HGS of female patients < 18.0 kg and male patients < 28 kg was significantly associated with lower SVF-free survival (female patients: p < 0.001, male patients: p = 0.038; log-rank test). Among women, each 1-kg increase in HGS was associated with a 9% lower risk of SVF (HR 0.91, p = 0.035) after adjustment for potential risk factors. Among men, although the associations between low HGS and increased risk of SVF were significant in the crude model (HR 0.79, p < 0.001), this significance disappeared after adjustment for bone mineral density of the femoral neck. CONCLUSIONS: Low HGS was significantly associated with lower SVF-free survival among elderly patients who underwent single-level PVA for osteoporotic vertebral fracture.

BACKGROUND: Z score utility is emphasized in classifying coronary artery lesions in Kawasaki disease patients. The present study is the largest such multicenter Chinese pediatric study about coronary artery diameter reference values and Z score regression equation to date. It is useful in Chinese pediatric echocardiography. METHODS: A multicenter cohort was assembled, which consisted of 852 healthy children between 1 month and 17 years of age, ten children were excluded because their ultrasound images were not clear, or lost in following up. Diameters of the right coronary artery, left coronary artery, and left anterior descending coronary artery were assessed using echocardiography. Data were body surface area (BSA)-corrected using BSA calculated via either the Stevenson BSA formula or the Haycock BSA formula. Coronary artery diameter reference values and Z score regression equations were established for use in the Chinese pediatric population. RESULTS: No difference was observed between coronary artery diameter data corrected using BSAste or BSAhay. Of the five assessed regression models, the exponential model exhibited the best fit and was therefore selected as the basis for derivation of the SZ method. When comparing Z scores, those produced by the SZ method conformed to the standard normal distribution, while those produced by the D method did not. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between Z scores produced by the SZ and D methods (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Coronary artery diameter reference values for echocardiography were successfully established for use in the Chinese pediatric population, and a Z score regression equation more suitable for clinical use in this population was successfully developed.

ABSTRACT

Aeromonas veronii is an important zoonotic pathogen that causes significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry. The use of probiotics in aquaculture is a practical alternative to antibiotics to promote animal health and aid in disease prevention. In the present study, we aimed to construct a recombinant Lactobacillus casei(surface-displayed or secretory) strain containing Malt from A. veronii TH0426 and assess its potential as an oral vaccine. A 1314-bp Malt gene fragment was successfully amplified and cloned into a prokaryotic protein expression system. Protein expression in resulting recombinant strains Lc-MCS-Malt (surface-displayed) and Lc-pPG-Malt (secretory) was then verified by Western blotting and indirect immunofluorescence. A single band was observed on the Western blots, with the molecular weight of the corresponding protein shown to be 48 kDa. Furthermore, a fluorescent signal for Lc-MCS-Malt was observed by fluorescence microscopy. At 0, 7, 16, 25, and 34 days post-immunization, tissue and blood samples were collected from common carp orally administered with the recombinant L. casei strains for immune-related index analyses. Treatment of common carp with the recombinant vaccine candidate stimulated high serum or skin mucus specific antibody titers and induced a higher lysozyme, ACP, SOD activity, while fish fed with Lc-pPG or PBS had no detectable immobilizing immune responses. Expression of IL-10, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IFN-γ genes in the group immunized with recombinant L. casei were significantly (P < 0.05) up regulated as compared with control groups, indicating that inflammatory response and cell immune response were triggered. Results also showed that recombinant L. casei could stimulate the mucosa through colonization of the intestine, resulting in increased transcription of IL-10, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. Immunity and colonization assays also showed that after 34 days of fasting, recombinant L. casei were still present in the intestines of the immunized fish. Common carp that received Lc-MCS-Malt(53.3%) and Lc-pPG-Malt (46.7%) exhibited higher survival rates than the controls after challenge with the pathogen A. veronii. Our findings suggested that recombinant L. casei can adequately protect fish and improve immunity, providing a theoretical basis for the future development of an oral Lactobacillus vaccine for use in aquaculture.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic adjacent segment disease (ASDis) is a major complication following spinal fusion. Sagittal spinopelvic imbalance may contribute to the development of ASDis. However, the exact ideal correction of lumbar lordosis (LL) is unknown for different ages of people to prevent ASDis. The purpose of this study was to estimate the ideal correction of LL required to prevent symptomatic ASDis requiring revision surgery in patients of various ages, and to determine the radiographic risk factors for ASDis. METHODS: 468 patients who underwent lumbar fusion between January 2014 and December 2016, were enrolled in the present study. The patients were classified into the ASDis and N-ASD group. These two matched groups were compared regarding surgery-related factors and radiographic features. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors for ASDis. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients (13.25%) underwent reoperation for ASDis during a mean follow-up duration of 38.07 months. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the postoperative LL - preoperative LL (△LL) cutoff value was 11.7°for the development of ASDis. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors for symptomatic ASDis were a smaller LL angle, △LL > 12°, and PI-LL > 10° (p <  0.05). For patients > 60 years, the incidence of ASDis was higher in patients with a LL correction of ≥10° and a lumbar-pelvic mismatch (PI-LL) of > 20°. CONCLUSIONS: The significant predictors of the occurrence of ASDis were a smaller LL angle, △LL > 12°, and PI-LL > 10°. However, in patients older than 60 years, the incidence of ASDis after lumbar fusion was higher in those with a LL correction of ≥10° and PI-LL of > 20°. More attention should be paid to patient age and the angle of correction of LL before lumbar fusion.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate features and complications of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who underwent posterior lumbar fusion surgery for lumbar degenerative diseases (LDD), as well as the risk factors for revision. METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2016, 132 patients were retrospectively identified for inclusion. Patients were divided into a 29 revision PD group and a 103 non-revision PD group. Patient factors included bone mineral density (BMD) and severity of PD using the Hoehn and Yahr staging system. Surgical factors included surgical levels and fusion methods. Radiographic measurements included pre-operative spinopelvic parameters, paraspinal muscle atrophy, and fatty infiltration. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent predictors for revision posterior lumbar fusion. RESULTS: The average age of the PD patients was 67.96 years, and the follow-up time was 49.01 months. R-PD patients accounted for 21.97% of all PD patients who underwent lumbar fusion surgery. Multivariable analysis indicated that low BMD (p = 0.012), fatty infiltration (p = 0.038), a smaller relative cross-sectional area (rCSA) of the paraspinal muscle (p = 0.008), larger pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) (p = 0.01), and sagittal vertical axis (SVA) (p = 0.004) were significant independent risk factors for revision posterior lumbar fusion in PD patients. CONCLUSION: PD patients with low pre-operative BMD, fatty infiltration, a smaller rCSA of the paraspinal muscle, and larger PI-LL and SVA had a higher rate of revision lumbar fusion. Maintaining sagittal balance, functional exercises, and anti-osteoporosis treatment were important in preventing complications in PD patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of C3/4 disc degeneration on cervical spondylosis with dizziness (CSD) and to assess the curative effect of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) in patients with CSD. METHOD: Four hundred nineteen patients who underwent ACDF for treatment of myelopathy or radiculopathy were divided into dizziness and non-dizziness group. The visual analog scale (VAS) score and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score were used to determine the intensity of dizziness and neurological symptoms, respectively. Cervical disc degeneration was evaluated using Miyazaki's classification system. Some parameters were measured using cervical radiographs. The surgical effects on CSD were compared between surgery with and without C3/4 level. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors for CSD. RESULTS: The pre-operative incidence of CSD was 33.9%. Women were more likely to develop dizziness than men (p < 0.05), CSD was significantly associated with C3/4 disc degeneration (69.7%, p < 0.001), and smokers were more subject to dizziness (p < 0.05). Regression analysis showed that female (OR = 1.611, p = 0.031), smoking (OR = 1.719, p = 0.032), Miyazaki grade of C3/4 ≥ IV (OR = 2.648, p < 0.001), and instability on C3/4 (OR = 1.672, p = 0.024) were risk factors for CSD. Treatment of CSD by ACDF involving C3/4 was more effective than not involving C3/4 (efficacy rate, 73.2% vs 51.7%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The CSD is a common clinical manifestation in elderly patients, especially patients with cervical spondylosis at the C3/4 level. Female, smoking, instability on C3/4, and C3/4 Miyazaki grade ≥ IV could be considered significant risk factors for CSD. CSD is more likely to be alleviated by ACDF involving C3/4.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Functional somatic symptoms in depression disorder may cause inappropriate illness behavior hindering the treatment process. Health anxiety may play a role in this relationship, but few studies have examined it. The current study aimed to investigate the role of health anxiety in the relationship between functional somatic symptoms and illness behavior in patients with depression. METHODS: The present study recruited 323 hospitalized patients with depression to complete the Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Whiteley-Index-7, and Scale for the Assessment of Illness Behavior, then constructed a structural equation model to examine whether health anxiety mediated the relationship between functional somatic symptoms and illness behavior. RESULTS: The results showed significant correlations between any two of the three variables of interest. More importantly, health anxiety played a partially mediating role (42.86%) in the relationship between functional somatic symptoms and illness behavior. Further analysis suggested that elderly patients reached higher health anxiety than younger patients when their functional somatic symptoms were mild. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight that health anxiety may mediate the influence of functional somatic symptoms on illness behavior. The implications of assessing and intervening in health anxiety in patients with depression were discussed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Metabolic disturbances have been correlated with suicidality, but little is known about the association between suicide risk and metabolic disturbances among individuals with depression. This study was to evaluate the prevalence and clinical correlations, especially cardio-metabolic associated factors of recent suicide attempts in Chinese patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: A total of 288 MDD inpatients were recruited. Their clinical and demographic data together with plasma glucose, lipid and thyroid function parameters were collected. Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) were rated for most of the patients. RESULTS: Of these MDD inpatients, 20.14% had attempted suicide during the past 1 month. Compared to those who had not attempted suicide, the suicide attempters had a significantly longer duration of illness, lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, lower total cholesterol, and more psychotic symptoms. However, all these significant results did not survive after the bonferroni correction (all p > 0.05). A logistic regression analysis indicated that suicide attempts were associated with the lower total cholesterol and more psychotic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the hypothesis of the association of low plasma cholesterol level and recent suicidal attempts in patients with MDD.

ABSTRACT

Mixed linked leukemia 4 (MLL4) is a specific methyltransferase of histone 3 position lysine 4 (H3K4). It is also one of the important members of COMPASS/Set1-like protein complex. Both MLL4 protein itself and its mediated H3K4 methylation modification can cause changes in chromatin structure and function, thus regulating gene transcription and expression. With the studies of MLL4 protein in recent years, the roles of MLL4 gene, MLL4 protein and protein complex in the development of tissues and organs, tumor diseases and other physiological and pathophysiological processes have been gradually revealed. In this paper, the research progress of MLL4 gene, MLL4 protein characteristics, biological function and its effect on disease were reviewed, in order to further understand the effect of histone methyltransferase on gene expression regulation, as well as its non-enzyme dependent function. This paper may provide new ideas for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of related diseases.

ABSTRACT

For GPS medium-long baseline real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, the troposphere parameter is introduced along with coordinates, and the model is ill-conditioned due to its strong correlation with the height parameter. For BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), additional difficulties occur due to its special satellite constellation. In fact, relative zenith troposphere delay (RZTD) derived from high-precision empirical zenith troposphere models can be introduced. Thus, the model strength can be improved, which is also called the RZTD-constrained RTK model. In this contribution, we first analyze the factors affecting the precision of BDS medium-long baseline RTK; thereafter, 15 baselines ranging from 38 km to 167 km in different troposphere conditions are processed to assess the performance of RZTD-constrained RTK. Results show that the troposphere parameter is difficult to distinguish from the height component, even with long time filtering for BDS-only RTK. Due to the lack of variation in geometry for the BDS geostationary Earth orbit satellite, the long convergence time of ambiguity parameters may reduce the height precision of GPS/BDS-combined RTK in the initial period. When the RZTD-constrained model was used in BDS and GPS/BDS-combined situations compared with the traditional RTK, the standard deviation of the height component for the fixed solution was reduced by 52.4% and 34.0%, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical decision making in children with heart disease relies on detailed measurements of cardiac structures using two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography. However, no echocardiographic reference values are available for the Chinese children. We aimed to establish z-score regression equations for left heart structures in a population-based cohort of healthy Chinese Han children. METHOD: Echocardiography was performed in 545 children with a normal heart. The dimensions of the aortic valve annulus (AVA), aortic sinuses of Valsalva (ASV), sinotubular junction (STJ), ascending aorta (AAO), left atrium (LA), mitral valve annulus (MVA), interventricular septal end-diastolic thickness (IVSd), interventricular septal end-systolic thickness (IVSs), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVIDd), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVIDs), left ventricular posterior wall end-diastolic thickness (LVPWd), left ventricular posterior wall end-systolic thickness (LVPWs) were measured. Regression analyses were conducted to relate the measurements of left heart structures to body surface area (BSA). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) were calculated. Several models were used, and the adjusted R2 values were compared for each model. RESULTS: AVA, ASV, STJ, AAO, LA, MVA, IVSd, IVSs, LVIDd, LVIDs, LVPWd, and LVPWs had a cubic relationship with BSA. LVEF and LVFS fell within a narrow range. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide reference values for z scores and regression equations for left heart structures in Han Chinese children. These data may help make a quick and accurate judgment of the routine clinical measurement of left heart structures in children with heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical decision making in children with congenital and acquired heart disease relies on measurements of cardiac structures using two-dimensional echocardiography. We aimed to establish z-score regression equations for right heart structures in healthy Chinese Han children. METHODS: Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography was performed in 515 patients. We measured the dimensions of the pulmonary valve annulus (PVA), main pulmonary artery (MPA), left pulmonary artery (LPA), right pulmonary artery (RPA), right ventricular outflow tract at end-diastole (RVOTd) and at end-systole (RVOTs), tricuspid valve annulus (TVA), right ventricular inflow tract at end-diastole (RVIDd) and at end-systole (RVIDs), and right atrium (RA). Regression analyses were conducted to relate the measurements of right heart structures to 4body surface area (BSA). Right ventricular outflow-tract fractional shortening (RVOTFS) was also calculated. Several models were used, and the best model was chosen to establish a z-score calculator. RESULTS: PVA, MPA, LPA, RPA, RVOTd, RVOTs, TVA, RVIDd, RVIDs, and RA (R2 = 0.786, 0.705, 0.728, 0.701, 0.706, 0.824, 0.804, 0.663, 0.626, and 0.793, respectively) had a cubic polynomial relationship with BSA; specifically, measurement (M) = ß0 + ß1 × BSA + ß2 × BSA2 + ß3 × BSA.3 RVOTFS (0.28 ± 0.02) fell within a narrow range (0.12-0.51). CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide reference values for z scores and regression equations for right heart structures in Han Chinese children. These data may help interpreting the routine clinical measurement of right heart structures in children with congenital or acquired heart disease. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT

A one-pot synthesis of bulky bis-pocket A3B-type meso-cyano porphyrin, 5-cyano-10,15,20-tris(2,4,6-triphenylphenyl)porphyrin, has been accomplished via trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) catalyzed condensation of pyrrole and 2,4,6-triphenylbenzaldehyde in an acceptable yield of about 4%. DDQ served as oxidant and the cyanating agent.

BACKGROUND: Smartphones are becoming a daily necessity for most undergraduates in Mainland China. Because the present scenario of problematic smartphone use (PSU) is largely unexplored, in the current study we aimed to estimate the prevalence of PSU and to screen suitable predictors for PSU among Chinese undergraduates in the framework of the stress-coping theory. METHODS: A sample of 1062 undergraduate smartphone users was recruited by means of the stratified cluster random sampling strategy between April and May 2015. The Problematic Cellular Phone Use Questionnaire was used to identify PSU. We evaluated five candidate risk factors for PSU by using logistic regression analysis while controlling for demographic characteristics and specific features of smartphone use. RESULTS: The prevalence of PSU among Chinese undergraduates was estimated to be 21.3%. The risk factors for PSU were majoring in the humanities, high monthly income from the family (≥1500 RMB), serious emotional symptoms, high perceived stress, and perfectionism-related factors (high doubts about actions, high parental expectations). CONCLUSIONS: PSU among undergraduates appears to be ubiquitous and thus constitutes a public health issue in Mainland China. Although further longitudinal studies are required to test whether PSU is a transient phenomenon or a chronic and progressive condition, our study successfully identified socio-demographic and psychological risk factors for PSU. These results, obtained from a random and thus representative sample of undergraduates, opens up new avenues in terms of prevention and regulation policies.
