ABSTRACT

The ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE3-LIKE (EIL) family is one of the most important transcription factor (TF) families in plants and is involved in diverse plant physiological and biochemical processes. In this study, ten EIL transcription factors (CsEILs) in sweet orange were systematically characterized via whole-genome analysis. The CsEIL genes were unevenly distributed across the four sweet orange chromosomes. Putative cis-acting regulatory elements (CREs) associated with CsEIL were found to be involved in plant development, as well as responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Notably, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) revealed that CsEIL genes were widely expressed in different organs of sweet orange and responded to both high and low temperature, NaCl treatment, and to ethylene-dependent induction of transcription, while eight additionally responded to Xanthomonas citri pv. Citri (Xcc) infection, which causes citrus canker. Among these, CsEIL2, CsEIL5 and CsEIL10 showed pronounced upregulation. Moreover, nine genes exhibited differential expression in response to Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) infection, which causes Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). The genome-wide characterization and expression profile analysis of CsEIL genes provide insights into the potential functions of the CsEIL family in disease resistance.

ABSTRACT

1,7-Di-tert-butyl-substituted aza-BODIPYs (tBu-azaBDP) were successfully obtained for the first time. The structures of tBu-azaBDP and Ph-azaBDP were confirmed by X-ray crystal analysis, and tBu-azaBDP 2 is more twisted than Ph-azaBDP 5. tBu-azaBDPs have significant photo-stability and enhanced water solubility. tBu-azaBDPs possess excellent optical properties, such as high molar extinction coefficients, broad full width half maxima, and large Stokes shifts, which is comparable to those of the parent dye Ph-azaBDP. Although the low-barrier rotation of the distal -tBu groups in tBu-azaBDPs results in low quantum yield, photothermal conversion efficiency and singlet oxygen generation ability of tBu-azaBDPs are more effective than those of Ph-azaBDP, which is highly desirable for a photothermal-photodynamic therapy agent.

ABSTRACT

Uniaxially aligned triisopropylsilylethynyl pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) crystals over a large area were fabricated using zone-casting technique. The array of TIPS-pentacene displayed a high orientation degree with a dichroic ratio (DR) of 0.80. The crystals were arranged with c axis perpendicular to the substrate and the long axis of the ribbon corresponded to the a axis of TIPS-pentacene. The properties of the solutions and the processing parameters were shown to influence the formation of the oriented TIPS-pentacene crystalline array. Solvent with a low boiling point (such as chloroform) favoured the orientation of the ribbon-like crystals. The concentration of the solution should be appropriate, ensuring the crystallization velocity of TIPS-pentacene matching with the receding of the meniscus. Besides, we proved that the casting speed should be large enough to induce a sufficient concentration gradient. The orientation mechanism of TIPS-pentacene was attributed to a synergy of the ordered nuclei and a match between the crystallization velocity and the casting speed. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the oriented TIPS-pentacene crystalline array showed a mobility of 0.67 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the role of a WeChat-based mobile platform in growth hormone therapy. Method: Growth hormone therapy and health education information for height growth were embedded in a WeChat-based mobile platform, and the platform was evaluated through medical staff assessments, patient volunteer assessments and quantitative scoring criteria. Results: In the medical staff evaluation, both clinicians and nurses had a positive attitude towards the mobile platform, believing that the design of the mobile platform was clearly visualized and easy to operate. In family volunteers' evaluations, the summary of ß-testing results showed that 90-100% of parents had a positive attitude towards the WeChat-based mobile platform. Parents of the patients and doctors and nurses assessed the mobile platform by reviewing quantitative scoring standards developed by professional researchers. All scores were >16 (the average score was 18-19.3). Children treated with growth hormone therapy were included for compliance tracking for one year, and patient adherence was described in this study. Conclusion: The interaction based on the WeChat platform and the health education of the public have greatly increased the interaction between doctors and patients, and improved patient satisfaction and compliance.

ABSTRACT

The actin-depolymerizing factor (ADF) gene family regulates changes in actin. However, the entire ADF family in the sweet orange Citrus sinensis has not been systematically identified, and their expressions in different organs and biotic stress have not been determined. In this study, through phylogenetic analysis of the sweet orange ADF gene family, seven CsADFs were found to be highly conserved and sparsely distributed across the four chromosomes. Analysis of the cis-regulatory elements in the promoter region showed that the CsADF gene had the potential to impact the development of sweet oranges under biotic or abiotic stress. Quantitative fluorescence analysis was then performed. Seven CsADFs were differentially expressed against the invasion of Xcc and CLas pathogens. It is worth noting that the expression of CsADF4 was significantly up-regulated at 4 days post-infection. Subcellular localization results showed that CsADF4 was localized in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Overexpression of CsADF4 enhanced the sensitivity of sweet orange leaves to Xcc. These results suggest that CsADFs may regulate the interaction of C. sinensis and bacterial pathogens, providing a way to further explore the function and mechanisms of ADF in the sweet orange.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we report a novel cartridge-case-like micromotor. The micromotor, which is fabricated by the template synthesis method, consists of a gelatin shell with platinum nanoparticles decorating its inner surface. Intriguingly, the resulting cartridge-case-like structure exhibits a pH-dependent "open and close" feature, which originates from the pH responsiveness of the gelatin material. On the basis of the catalytic activity of the platinum nanoparticle inside the gelatin shell, the resulting cartridge-case-like structure is capable of moving autonomously in the aqueous solution containing the hydrogen peroxide fuel. More interestingly, we find out that the micromotor can be utilized as a motion-based pH sensor over the whole pH range. The moving velocity of the micromotor increases monotonically with the increase of pH of the analyte solution. Three different factors are considered to be responsible for the proportional relation between the motion speed and pH of the analyte solution: the peroxidase-like and oxidase-like catalytic behavior of the platinum nanoparticle at low and high pH, the volumetric decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide under the basic condition and the pH-dependent catalytic activity of the platinum nanoparticle caused by the swelling/deswelling behavior of the gelatin material. The current work highlights the impact of the material properties on the motion behavior of a micromotor, thus paving the way toward its application in the motion-based sensing field.

ABSTRACT

An organic donor-acceptor cocrystal with an ambipolar transporting property was constructed based on N,N'-bis(1-ethylpropyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (EP-PDI) and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis-(hexyloxy)-triphenylene (H6TP). The cocrystal with an alternating stacking of H6TP and EP-PDI molecules was formed through both drop-casting and spin-coating processes, especially at the optimized ratios of H6TP/EP-PDI (2/1, 1/1). The formation of the cocrystal was driven by the strong π-π interaction and the weaker steric hindrance, resulting from the smaller side groups, between the donor and acceptor molecules. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the H6TP/EP-PDI cocrystal exhibited relatively balanced hole/electron transport, with a hole mobility of 1.14 × 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and an electron mobility of 1.40 × 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

ABSTRACT

We describe a polymer-based artificial tadpole-like micromotor, which is fabricated through the electrospinning technique. By incorporating functional materials onto its surface or within its body, the resulting tadpole-like micromotor can not only move autonomously in an aqueous solution with a flexible tail, but also exhibit thermo- and magnetic responsive properties.
