ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy has become a cross-disciplinary concept. In the field of healthcare, this concept is considered crucial for nurses; who play an important role in improving the health and well-being of the community. AIMS: The aim of this study was to develop a "Relationship-with-the-patient self-efficacy scale" (RPSES). METHODOLOGY: A sample of 331 university students (310 females and 21 males; 168 from the midwifery and 162 from the nursing departments) were enrolled in the study. Out of 24 items, 8 behavior items with the highest factor loadings were selected regarding the nurse-patient-relationship self-efficacy according to the results of the preliminary exploratory factor analysis. RESULTS: The final exploratory factor analysis revealed that the selected 8 items of RPSES had a single factor, explaining 83.28% of the total variance. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was c alculated as 0.97. CONCLUSION: This scale has beendemonstrated to be a valid and reliable instrument. The analyses unfolded that RPSES scores of the students were not different between men and womenand did not differ by the departments the students attended; however, the RPSES scores were different by the grade levels of the students (juniors and seniors). The fourth graders' RPSES scores were higher than those of third graders.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether maternal serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels are associated with unexplained recurrent pregnancy losses (RPLs). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one pregnant women with idiopathic RPLs who were selected from 47 cases with RPLs were compared with age-matched 24 control participants. Transvaginal obstetric ultrasonographies were performed and maternal serum samples were collected between 5th and 10th gestational weeks to evaluate serum VEGF and progesterone (P4) concentrations. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique was used in measurements of VEGF and P4. RESULTS: Prevalence of idiopathic cases among all RPLs was 44.7%. Median serum VEGF value was found statistically higher in RPL group when compared to control group (210.33 ± 108.23 pg/ml vs. 123.91 ± 18.8 pg/ml, respectively). There was no statistical difference between the median values of serum P4 levels in idiopathic RPL group and the control group (19.53 ± 5.79 ng/ml and 20.08 ± 7.85 ng/ml, respectively). Serum VEGF levels did not differ significantly with regard to gestational age within the RPL and control groups (p = 0.72 and p = 0.89, respectively). A positive correlation was found between VEGF levels and the patients' age within RPL group (r = 0.515). CONCLUSIONS: Serum VEGF levels are independent by the gestational age. Serum VEGF concentrations correlate positively with maternal age. Increased maternal age, especially maternal age over 35 years, is related to elevated serum VEGF concentration. Increased maternal serum VEGF concentration is related to recurrent pregnancy loss.

ABSTRACT

Child crime and their feelings of guilt have special importance because of their impact on children's development and future life. In the last few years, the number of young and child criminals has increased in Turkey. The sample for this study is from Dügerek prison in Mugla, one of the cities of the Aegean region of Turkey, from 18 February 2007 to 22 February 2007. The sampling group was randomly chosen and consisted of 41 boys aged 15-18 from the child section of the prison. There were no girls in that section. After a one-to-one oral interview with the children, a questionnaire containing the Cornell Index, Inertial Anxiety Inventory and demographic questions was administered. There was a highly positive, meaningful relationship (r: 0.771, P < 0.05) between state anxiety and trait anxiety levels. Our recommendation is that juvenile delinquents need more psychological support than their peers with normal lives, so in order to rehabilitate them, the number of the psychologists should be increased in this prison.

ABSTRACT

The size of brain ventricles is especially relevant in some brain diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Many studies have been conducted to assess the brain ventricles. To the best of our knowledge, however, there is no fourth, third and lateral ventricles volume study evaluating the efficiency and accuracy of point-counting and planimetry methods of the Cavalieri principle in the literature. In the current study, we estimated the volume of intracerebral ventricles in normal subjects using stereological methods. The volumes of fourth, third and lateral ventricle were estimated in 14 young Turkish volunteers (7 males and 7 females), aged between 18 and 36 years and free of any neurological symptoms and signs, using serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Volumes of intracerebral ventricles were determined on MRIs using the point-counting and planimetry methods. The mean results of the point-counting method were 14.7 +/- 4.2, 8.7 +/- 3.0 and 131.8 +/- 33.1 mm(3) for the fourth, third and lateral ventricles, respectively. The mean results of the planimetry method were 15.4 +/- 3.4, 8.6 +/- 3.5 and 153.7 +/- 34.6 mm(3) for the fourth, third and lateral ventricles, respectively. Ventricle volumes obtained by the two different methods were not statistically different (p > 0.05) and they correlated well with each other. Good agreement was found between results obtained with the point-counting and planimetry techniques. The findings of the present study using stereological methods could provide data for the evaluation of normal and pathological volumes of intracerebral ventricles.
