ABSTRACT

The electronic and vibrational spectra of cyclopropylbenzene (CPB) and 1,3-bromocyclopropylbenzene (BrCPB) in the gas phase were investigated using quantum chemical calculations in combination with resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization REMPI techniques including 1c-R2PI, UV-UV holeburning, and IR-UV ion depletion in the CH stretch region. The electronic spectra revealed the presence of a single conformer for both species, with the absence of any perpendicular conformer attributed to low computed barriers to conformer interconversion. Assignment of CPB to the bisected conformer was made through interpreting distinctive CH stretch bands in the IR-UV spectrum in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. A local anharmonic model based on DFT calculations was adapted to reproduce the cyclopropyl CH stretch spectrum successfully. It was not feasible to definitively assign which bisected conformer of BrCPB was observed using vibrational information alone due to the close similarity of their predicted IR spectra. However, conformational sensitivity of the S1 ← S0 transition dipole moment (TDM) alignments leads to simulated rotational contours that display stark differences, which prompted assignment to the "B1" bisecting conformer with the cyclopropyl ring directed away from the bromine atom. The absence of the energetically comparable "B2" conformer is unexpected. The analysis of the convolution of aromatic and aliphatic modes serves as a basis for assignment in constrained aliphatic systems.

ABSTRACT

Il "progetto Michelangelo" è nato dall'esigenza di rallentare la diffusione dei contagi da SARS-CoV-2 e alleggerire il carico a livello ospedaliero. Inizialmente, la maggior parte degli ospiti dell'hotel Michelangelo di Milano erano pazienti dimessi dagli ospedali con test molecolare ancora positivo che non avevano la possibilità di restare in isolamento domiciliare. Ben presto, però, il progetto è stato esteso e circa un ospite su quattro era un adulto/nucleo familiare in condizioni di grave disagio economico o sociale o una persona senza fissa dimora. Inoltre, la maggior parte degli ospiti era di nazionalità non italiana: persone che, a causa di barriere linguistiche, legali, culturali e sociali, hanno trovato maggiore difficoltà ad avere un rapido accesso ai servizi sanitari. Il "progetto Michelangelo" non ha solo contribuito a ridurre il sovraffollamento degli ospedali, ma è stato di supporto ai servizi rivolti al contrasto della grave marginalità.

ABSTRACT

A gas-phase electronic spectrum of nicotine in a supersonic expansion has been recorded using two-color resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy. Efficient photoionization was achievable only via the pyridine chromophore owing to poor Franck-Condon overlap in the N-methylpyrrolidine moiety. Two conformers of nicotine have been characterized and assigned by infrared-ultraviolet (IR-UV) ion depletion and IR-UV hole-burning spectroscopy, in combination with quantum chemical techniques. Trans-A with nitrogen atoms further apart is more stable by 2 kJ mol-1 and the most populated conformer in the supersonic jet, owing this stability to a stronger inter-ring CH···N hydrogen bond than the trans-B counterpart.

ABSTRACT

The electronic spectra of 2-bromoethylbenzene and its chloro and fluoro analogues have been recorded by resonant two-photon ionisation (R2PI) spectroscopy. Anti and gauche conformers have been assigned by rotational band contour analysis and IR-UV ion depletion spectroscopy in the CH region. Hydrate clusters of the anti conformers have also been observed, allowing the role of halocarbons as hydrogen bond acceptors to be examined in this context. The donor OH stretch of water bound to chlorine is red-shifted by 36 cm-1, or 39 cm-1 in the case of bromine. Although classed as weak H-bond acceptors, halocarbons are favourable acceptor sites compared to π systems. Fluorine stands out as the weakest H-bond acceptor amongst the halogens. Chlorine and bromine are also weak H-bond acceptors, but allow for more geometric lability, facilitating complimentary secondary interactions within the host molecule. Ab initio and DFT quantum chemical calculations, both harmonic and anharmonic, aid the structural assignments and analysis.

ABSTRACT

Evidence and understanding of sulfur-centered hydrogen bonding, especially where the donor is a thiol, lags far behind that for conventional OH interactions. To help address this deficiency, conformer specific IR spectra of 2-phenylethanethiol (PET) and associated 1:1 solvent complexes have been measured in SH, OH, and CH stretch regions using resonant-two-photon-ionization (R2PI) and IR-UV ion dip spectroscopic techniques. The aromatic and aliphatic CH stretch regions show signature differences between anti and gauche conformers. Supported by ab initio calculations, a PET-water cluster with an OH···S arrangement and a PET-diethyl ether cluster expressing an SH···O interaction were identified. The SH stretch band of the SH···O complex is red-shifted and undergoes significant intensity enhancement compared to the bare molecule, which is characteristic of hydrogen bonding. These findings offer insight into the nature of the thiol functional group as a potential hydrogen bond donor and acceptor.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Keyhole surgery is characterized by loss of dexterity of surgeon's movements because of the limited workspace, nonintuitive motor skills of the surgical systems, and loss of tactile sensation that may lead to tissue damage and bad execution of the tasks. METHODS: In this paper, a three-fingered underactuated miniature tool for robot-aided laparoscopic surgery is presented. The design is conceived to realize a closed-hand configuration allowing the insertion of the tool into the abdominal cavity through the trocar in one step and to reach different grasping as well as pushing/holding configurations once in the cavity. RESULTS: Aiming to replicate human hand dexterity and versatility, different solutions for the kinematic structure of the hand are analyzed using quality indices to evaluate the manipulability and stability of the grasp. Furthermore, a first prototype of fingertip force sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology has been realized and tested. The design choices of the prototype are described and discussed with the aid of experiments. CONCLUSIONS: The whole concept and the need for such anthropomorphic tool are discussed with surgeons to highlight constraints and potentials in surgical tasks. The feedback by expert surgeons is used to provide specifications and improvements to the kinematics and mechanical design. The investigations of different designs allow identifying the optimal solution to improve grasping and manipulation capabilities. The tests on FBG sensors led to the conclusion that this technology guarantees good performance and can be a good solution for applications in surgical robotics.

ABSTRACT

We examined the expression of metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors in species of fish that differ for their vulnerability to anoxic brain damage. Although expression of mGlu1a and mGlu5 receptors was similar in the brain of all species examined, expression of mGlu2/3 receptors was substantially higher in the brain of anoxia-tolerant species (i.e., the carp Carassius carassius and the goldfish Carassius auratus) than in the brain of species that are highly vulnerable to anoxic damage, such as the trouts Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss. This difference was confirmed by measuring the mGlu2/3 receptor-mediated inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cAMP formation in slices prepared from the telencephalon of C. auratus and S. trutta. We exposed the goldfish C. auratus to water deprived of oxygen for 4 hr for the induction of hypoxic brain damage. Although the goldfish survived this treatment, the occurrence of apoptotic cell death could be demonstrated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated biotinylated UTP nick end labeling staining and by the assessment of caspase-3 activity in different brain region. The extent of cell death was highest in the medulla oblongata, followed by the optic tectum, cerebellum, and hypothalamus. No cell death was found in the telencephalon. This regional pattern of hypoxic damage was inversely related to the expression of mGlu2/3 receptors, which was lowest in the medulla oblongata and highest in the telencephalon. Treatment of the goldfish with the brain permeant mGlu2/3 receptor antagonist LY341495 (1 mg/kg, i.p.) amplified anoxic damage throughout the brain and enabled the induction of cell death by anoxia in the telencephalon. In contrast, treatment of the goldfish with the mGlu2/3 receptor agonist LY379268 (0.5 or 1 mg/kg, i.p.) was highly protective against anoxic brain damage. Finally, exposure to the antagonist LY341495 (0.5 microm) greatly amplified the release of glutamate induced by hypoxia in slices prepared from the medulla oblongata and the telencephalon of the goldfish. We conclude that expression of mGlu2/3 receptors provides a major defensive mechanism against brain damage in anoxia-tolerant species.

ABSTRACT

The telencephalo-habenulo-interpeduncular connections have been studied in the brain of the cartilaginous fish Chiloscyllium arabicum. In addition to telencephalic and diencephalic projections to the habenula and to habenulo-interpeduncular projection, the presence of a direct telencephalo-interpeduncular connection confirmed some homologies of this system in cartilaginous fishes with actinopterigian fishes and land vertebrates.
