ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) reveal multifaceted immunoregulatory properties, which can be applied for diverse refractory and recurrent disease treatment including acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). Distinguishing from MSCs with considerable challenges before clinical application, MSCs-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos) are cell-free microvesicles with therapeutic ingredients and serve as advantageous alternatives for ameliorating the outcomes of aGVHD. MSC-Exos were enriched and identified by western blotting analysis, NanoSight, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Bone marrow-derived MSCs (denoted as MSCs) and exosomes (denoted as MSC-Exos) were infused into the aGVHD SD-Wister rat model via tail vein, and variations in general growth and survival of rats were observed. The level of inflammatory factors in serum was quantized by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The pathological conditions of the liver and intestine of rats were observed by frozen sectioning. The ratios of CD4+/CD8+ and Treg cell proportions in peripheral blood, together with the autophagy in the spleen and thymus, were analyzed by flow cytometry. After treatment with MSC-Exos, the survival time of aGVHD rats was prolonged, the clinical manifestations of aGVHD in rats were improved, whereas the pathological damage of aGVHD in the liver and intestine was reduced. According to ELISA, we found that MSC-Exos revealed ameliorative effect upon aGVHD inflammation (e.g., TNF-α, IL-2, INF-γ, IL-4, and TGF-ß) compared to the MSC group. After MSC-Exo treatment, the ratio of Treg cells in peripheral blood was increased, whereas the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in peripheral blood and the autophagy in the spleen and thymus was decreased. MSC-Exos effectively suppressed the activation of immune cells and the manifestation of the inflammatory response in the aGVHD rat model. Our data would supply new references for MSC-Exo-based "cell-free" biotherapy for aGVHD in future.

ABSTRACT

TET proteins, by converting 5-methylcytosine (5mC) to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), are hypothesized, but not directly shown, to protect promoter CpG islands (CGIs) against abnormal DNA methylation (DNAm) in cancer. We define such a protective role linked to DNA damage from oxidative stress (OS) known to induce this abnormality. TET2 removes aberrant DNAm during OS through interacting with DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) in a "Yin-Yang" complex targeted to chromatin and enhanced by p300 mediated TET2 acetylation. Abnormal gains of DNAm and 5hmC occur simultaneously in OS, and knocking down TET2 dynamically alters this balance by enhancing 5mC and reducing 5hmC. TET2 reduction results in hypermethylation of promoter CGIs and enhancers in loci largely overlapping with those induced by OS. Thus, TET2 indeed may protect against abnormal, cancer DNAm in a manner linked to DNA damage.

ABSTRACT

Rapidly accelerated fibrosarcoma (ARAF, BRAF, CRAF) kinase is central to the MAPK pathway (RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK). Inactive RAF kinase is believed to be monomeric, autoinhibited, and cytosolic, while activated RAF is recruited to the membrane via RAS-GTP, leading to the relief of autoinhibition, phosphorylation of key regulatory sites, and dimerization of RAF protomers. Although it is well known that active and inactive BRAF have differential phosphorylation sites that play a crucial role in regulating BRAF, key details are still missing. In this study, we report the characterization of a novel phosphorylation site, BRAFS732 (equivalent in CRAFS624), located in proximity to the C-terminus binding motif for the 14-3-3 scaffolding protein. At the C terminus, 14-3-3 binds to BRAFpS729 (CRAFpS621) and enhances RAF dimerization. We conducted mutational analysis of BRAFS732A/E and CRAFS624A/E and revealed that the phosphomimetic S→E mutant decreases 14-3-3 association and RAF dimerization. In normal cell signaling, dimerized RAF phosphorylates MEK1/2, which is observed in the phospho-deficient S→A mutant. Our results suggest that phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of this site fine-tune the association of 14-3-3 and RAF dimerization, ultimately impacting MEK phosphorylation. We further characterized the BRAF homodimer and BRAF:CRAF heterodimer and identified a correlation between phosphorylation of this site with drug sensitivity. Our work reveals a novel negative regulatory role for phosphorylation of BRAFS732 and CRAFS624 in decreasing 14-3-3 association, dimerization, and MEK phosphorylation. These findings provide insight into the regulation of the MAPK pathway and may have implications for cancers driven by mutations in the pathway.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The stalk traits stalk diameter, stalk length, rind penetrometer resistance and dry matter content are important indicators for measuring lodging resistance. RESULTS: In this study, 377 inbred lines were used as the basic materials, and four stalk-related traits including stalk diameter, stalk length, rind penetrometer resistance and dry matter content of the third segment of maize, were investigated at the tasseling, grain filling, and maturity stages. 461,053 high-quality SNPs which were obtained by whole genome resequencing were used for genome-wide association study. As a result of mixed linear model analysis (P < 9.77 × 10-6), 29 significant SNPs related to traits were detected, accounting for 7.19% -15.03% of phenotypic variation, among which 4, 1, 4 and 20 SNPs were found related to rind penetrometer resistance, stalk diameter, stalk length, and dry matter content respectively. Most candidate genes are related to plant element structure, signal transduction mechanisms, inorganic ion transport and metabolism, nucleotide transport and metabolism, and transporter enzyme families. Comparing mixed linear model with generalized linear model, a total of 12 candidate genes were detected repeatedly, during which the candidate gene Zm00001d014449 were detected 5 times, with a phenotypic variation interpretation rate of 9.95% -10.84%. This gene is mainly expressed in cells with active cell division and tissue differentiation, and is involved in the formation of stalk vascular bundles and the synthesis of cell walls. Another candidate gene, Zm00001d005300, encodes the transcription factor MYB44, which regulates the dependence of salt stress signal phosphorylation, can effectively inhibit the accumulation of destructive reactive oxygen species, and has a certain resistance to non-biotic stress. In addition, this study also found that 10 unknown functional genes can be further Functional verification. CONCLUSIONS: This study helps to deepen the understanding of the genetic basis of traits related to maize stalk lodging resistance, and provides theoretical guidance for future maize lodging resistance breeding.

ABSTRACT

The energy density of Ni-rich cathodes is expected to be further unlocked by increasing the cut-off voltage to above 4.3 V, which nevertheless come with significantly increased irreversible phase transition and abundant side reactions. In this study, the perovskite oxides enhanced radial-aligned LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 (NCM811) cathodes are reported, in which the coherent-growth La2 [LiTM]O4 clusters are evenly riveted into the crystals and the stable Lax Ca1- x [TM]O3- x protective layer is concurrently formed on the surface. The reciprocal interactions greatly reduce the lattice strain during de-/lithiation. Meantime, the abundant oxygen vacancies of the coating layer are proved to reversibly capture (state of charge) and re-release (state of discharge) the oxygen radicals, fully avoiding their correlative side reactions. The resultant NCM811 displays negligible O2 and CO2 emissions when charging to 4.5 V as well as a thinner CEI film, therefore delivering a large capacity of 225 mAh g-1 at 0.1C in coin-type half-cells and a high retention of 88.3% after 1000 cycles at 1C in pouch-type full-cells within 2.7-4.5 V. The development of high-voltage Ni-rich cathodes exhibits a highly effective pathway to further increase their energy density.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Thyrotropin-secreting adenoma (TSHoma) is a rare type of pituitary adenoma, occurring in one per million people. Little is known about TSHoma. We summarized the demographic, clinical and hormonal characteristics of TSHoma based on a single-centre experience. Moreover, we explored the predictive value of postoperative thyroid function for long-term remission. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: We retrospectively analysed 63 patients who were diagnosed as TSHoma and surgically treated at our hospital from January 2015 to June 2021. The preoperative clinical characteristics were analysed and compared between remission and nonremission groups. Thyroid function was measured at 1 day, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and over 12 months after surgery to determine whether they could predict long-term remission. RESULTS: The male to female ratio for TSHoma was 1.25. The mean age at diagnosis was 45 ± 12 years. Clinical presentation was varied, presenting with hyperthyroidism (68.25%), space-occupying effect (15.87%), amenorrhea (7.14% of female patients) and nonsymptoms (22.22%). 88.14% of patients achieved postoperative endocrinological remission. Larger tumour size and tumour invasion into cavernous sinus and suprasellar with chiasmal compression were strong predictors of lower rates of endocrinological remission. Postoperative thyroid function at 3 months was a viable diagnostic predictor for postoperative remission, especially for FT4 level with a 20.65 pmol/L cutoff. CONCLUSIONS: Tumour size and extent are major prognostic factors for remission. Postoperative thyroid function at 3 months could be used as a clinical prediction tool for long-term endocrinological remission.

BACKGROUND: Endoplasmic reticulum stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation and chronic pain. This study hypothesized that PRKR-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) and inositol-requiring enzyme type 1 (IRE1) regulate lipocalin-2 (LCN2) and Nod-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) expression in astrocytes, thereby contributing to morphine tolerance and hyperalgesia. METHODS: The study was performed in Sprague-Dawley rats and C57/Bl6 mice of both sexes. The expression of LCN2 and NLRP3 was assessed by Western blotting. The tail-flick, von Frey, and Hargreaves tests were used to evaluate nociceptive behaviors. Chromatin immunoprecipitation was conducted to analyze the binding of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) to the promoters of LCN2 and TXNIP. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were used to evaluate neuronal excitability. RESULTS: Pharmacologic inhibition of PERK and IRE1 attenuated the development of morphine tolerance and hyperalgesia in male (tail latency on day 7, 8.0 ± 1.13 s in the morphine + GSK2656157 [10 µg] group vs. 5.8 ± 0.65 s in the morphine group; P = 0.04; n = 6 rats/group) and female (tail latency on day 7, 6.0 ± 0.84 s in the morphine + GSK2656157 [10 µg] group vs. 3.1 ± 1.09 s in the morphine group; P = 0.0005; n = 6 rats/group) rats. Activation of PERK and IRE1 upregulated expression of LCN2 and NLRP3 in vivo and in vitro. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis showed that ATF4 directly bound to the promoters of the LCN2 and TXNIP. Lipocalin-2 induced neuronal hyperexcitability in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia via melanocortin-4 receptor. CONCLUSIONS: Astrocyte endoplasmic reticulum stress sensors PERK and IRE1 facilitated morphine tolerance and hyperalgesia through upregulation of LCN2 and NLRP3 in the spinal cord.

ABSTRACT

Intracranial germ cell tumors (IGCTs) comprise 3% to 5% of all pediatric brain tumors in the West, with a significantly higher prevalence in Asia. Although these tumors are histologically diverse, repeated somatic variants have been demonstrated. Chromosomal aneuploidies, such as Klinefelter and Down syndromes, are associated with IGCTs, but no familial germline tumor syndromes are currently known. Here, we report the novel case of 2 American siblings with underlying autism spectrum disorder who developed intracranial germinoma within months of each other, in the absence of external risk factors. Extensive genetic testing was performed, including karyotyping, chromosomal microarray, and whole exome and whole genome sequencing, and did not identify any variants accounting for the phenotypes. Despite the absence of overlapping variants, a recent retrospective review demonstrated a threefold greater prevalence of autism spectrum disorder in patients with intracranial germinoma compared with national prevalence. This report highlights the complexity of tumor development, as well as the need for further research regarding IGCTs in a neurodivergent population.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) combined with Indian ink in locating target vessels of gastric varices (GVs) compared with conventional endoscopic techniques. Additionally, the characteristics of GVs under conventional endoscopy were also explored. METHODS: All 50 cirrhotic patients with GVs between August 2021 and December 2022 were included in the study. Firstly, conventional endoscopy was employed to identify GVs and to record the expected injection sites. Subsequently, EUS was used to locate the perforated vessel and the injection site was them marked with India ink followed by injection with cyanoacrylate (CYA). Finally, conventional endoscopy was used to examine GVs, to identify the marker points of Indian ink and to compare whether the injection points under conventional endoscopy were consistent with those marked with Indian ink. Furthermore, patients with consistent and inconsistent distribution of endoscopic markers and injection sites were divided into two groups. RESULTS: EUS could detect the perforating vessels in real time and intuitively. The distribution of markers using EUS was significantly different compared with the injection points obtained by conventional endoscopy (P < 0.001). Therefore, 20 cases were allocated to the consistent group and 30 cases to the non-consistent group. 16 patients who showed red wale signs were obtained in the consistent group and 11 patients in the non-consistent group (P = 0.048). The diameter of the largest GVs was 13.5 (10-15) mm in the consistent group compared with 10 (7.5-10) mm in the non-consistent group (P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: EUS could provide the exact location of GVs, thus more accurately describing the endoscopic characteristics of the GVs. Furthermore, the red wale signs and diameter of the largest GVs obtained using conventional endoscopy were helpful in determining the location of target GVs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and depression in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) was unknown. Therefore, we aimed to clarify this association in a cohort of patients. METHODS: HGS was used as a representative indicator of muscle strength and was measured with a handheld dynamometer. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the self-reported Patient Health Questionnaire-9. A multivariable logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline analysis were used to assess the relationship between HGS and depression. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression in our study was 34% in 568 Chinese patients undergoing HD. Compared with patients in the lowest tertiles of absolute and weighted HGS, patients in the highest tertiles of HGS had an approximately 59% lower [odds ratio (OR) = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.24-0.68; OR = 0.41, 95%CI = (0.24-0.69)] prevalence of depressive symptoms after multivariate adjustments. Besides, the risk of depression in hemodialysis patients decreased by 33% (OR = 0.67, 95%CI = 0.53-0.85) and 32% (OR = 0.68, 95%CI = 0.54-0.85) for each standard deviation increase in absolute HGS and weighted HGS, respectively. The prevalence of depressive symptoms decreased with both increasing absolute HGS and weighted HGS after multivariate adjustments (p for trend < 0.05). Furthermore, a linear dose-response relationship was observed between absolute HGS and weighted HGS and the prevalence of depressive symptoms (pnonlinearity>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that lower handgrip strength, a simple and modifiable parameter, is associated with a higher prevalence of depression in Chinese patients undergoing HD. Considering that depression is often unrecognized or underdiagnosed in HD patients, lowered muscle strength should be an important indicator and incentive for medical staff to screen for depression.

BACKGROUND: The goal was to investigate the relationship between serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), P-selectin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), platelet parameters, and coagulation function indexes and postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with traumatic fracture. METHODS: A total of 150 patients with traumatic fractures after DVT were selected as the DVT group, and 150 patients with traumatic fractures without DVT during the same period were selected as the non-DVT group. Serum VEGF, P-selectin, HDL-C, platelet parameters including platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR), and plasma coagulation function indexes including thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thrombin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FIB), and D-dimer (D-D) were measured. Pearson's correlation was performed to analyze the correlation between serum VEGF, P-selectin, and coagulation function indexes, and binary logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of DVT. RESULTS: Serum VEGF and P-selectin in the DVT group were higher while HDL-C was lower than those in the non-DVT group (p < 0.05). Serum VEGF and P-selectin were negatively correlated with plasma D-D and FIB (p < 0.05), and serum HDL-C was negatively correlated (p < 0.05). Compared with the non-DVT group, MPV, PDW, and P-LCR in the DVT group were decreased (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that P-LCR was a risk factor for postoperative DVT in patients with traumatic fractures (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Serum VEGF and P-selectin are higher and HDL-C is lower in patients with DVT after postoperative traumatic fracture than in patients without DVT. Combined detection of serum VEGF, P-selectin, HDL-C, and coagulation function indexes may help to reduce the risk of DVT. Platelet parameters (MPV, PDW, P-LCR) have certain reference values for the clinical diagnosis and disease evaluation of DVT.

OBJECTIVES: Aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) based screening is the first step in the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA). However, the guideline-recommended ARR cutoff covers a wide range, from the equivalent of 1.3 to 4.9 ng·dl-1/mIU∙l-1. We aimed to optimize the ARR cutoff for PA screening based on the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). METHODS: Longitudinally, we included hypertensive participants from the Framingham Offspring Study (FOS) who attended the sixth examination cycle and followed up until 2014. At baseline (1995-1998), we used circulating concentrations of aldosterone and renin to calculate ARR (unit: ng·dl-1/mIU∙l-1) among 1,433 subjects who were free of CVD. We used spline regression to calculate the ARR threshold based on the incident CVD. We used cross-sectional data from the Chongqing Primary Aldosteronism Study (CONPASS) to explore whether the ARR cutoff selected from FOS is applicable to PA screening. RESULTS: In FOS, CVD risk increased with an increasing ARR until a peak of ARR 1.0, followed by a plateau in CVD risk (hazard ratio 1.49, 95%CI 1.19-1.86). In CONPASS, when compared to essential hypertension with ARR < 1.0, PA with ARR ≥ 1.0 carried a higher CVD risk (odds ratio 2.24, 95%CI 1.41-3.55), while essential hypertension with ARR ≥ 1.0 had an unchanged CVD risk (1.02, 0.62-1.68). Setting ARR cutoff at 2.4 ~ 4.9, 10% ~30% of PA subjects would be unrecognized although they carried a 2.45 ~ 2.58-fold higher CVD risk than essential hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: The CVD risk-based optimal ARR cutoff is 1.0 ng·dl-1/mIU∙l-1 for PA screening. The current guideline-recommended ARR cutoff may miss patients with PA and high CVD risk. In this work, a novel rural sewage treatment technology, Electrocoagulation enhanced Gravity-Driven Membrane Bioreactor (EC-GDMBR) was exploited for the rural sewage treatment under long-term operation (160 days). Two EC-GDMBRs with various module structures of ceramic membrane (horizontal module and side module) not only displayed the desirable effluent quality, but also sustained the stable flux (8-13 LMH). The electrocoagulation, electrooxidation, biodegradation, and separation in EC-GDMBRs were able to synergistically remove the particle matter, organic (CODCr effluent <11.6 ± 1.2 mg/L) and nutrients (NH3-N effluent <0.1 mg/L, TN effluent <8.5 mg/L, TP effluent <0.05 mg/L). Besides, the high permeability of ceramic membrane and large porosity of biofilm on its surface improved the sustainability of stable flux during the long-term operation. Moreover, by analyzing bacterial abundance, Extracellular Polymeric Substances, Adenosine Tri-Phosphate and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, a large number of microorganisms grew and accumulated on the carrier, as well as formed the biofilm (23.46-659.9 µm), while Nitrobacteria (1.6-4.1 %) and Nitrate (0.01-0.06 %) exited in the carrier biofilms, promoting the nitrogen removal. Compared with EC-GDMBR with side module of ceramic membrane, EC-GDMBR with horizontal module of ceramic membrane has advantages in flux behavior, organic/nutrient removal, microbial abundance/activity, abundance of nitrogen removal functional bacteria and water permeability of biofilm, because the ceramic membrane of horizontal module can promote the uniform growth of biofilm and improve the uniformity of flow penetration distribution. In general, the findings of this work verify the reliability of EC-GDMBR for the sustainable operation of wastewater treatment and improve its application value of rural sewage treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the trend of eating out among Chinese male adults and explore the association between eating out and dietary nutrition and health. METHODS: Males aged 18 and above with complete data were selected from China Health and Nutrition Survey 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2018. Eating out behavior was defined as having consumption of food prepared outside the home during the three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls period. Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to analyze the trend of prevalence of eating out and the energy contribution from eating out foods in males from 2000 to 2018. Analysis of covariance was used to compare the differences in several food and dietary nutrient intakes and nutritional indicators by eating out in 2018. RESULTS: The prevalence of eating out among Chinese male adults increased from 48.49% in 2000 to 57.51% in 2018, showing an increased trend followed by a decreased trend. Males in the 18-29 years old group, urban group, high income group, and high education level group had a higher rate of eating out(P<0.05). The energy contribution from eating out foods increased from 21.80% in 2000 to 28.77% in 2018, showing a slow upward trend. In 2018, the intake of rice, tubers and vegetables was lower in the eating out group, while intake of wheat, fruits, livestock and poultry meat, aquatic products, eggs and milk in eating out group was higher than those in the non-eating out group(P<0.05). The eating out group had a higher intake of energy, fat, protein, cholesterol, calcium, zinc, vitamin B_1 and vitamin B_2 than the non-eating out group(P<0.05). The eating out group had lower levels of systolic blood pressure, HDL-C, blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin than the counterparts. The levels of BMI, waist, body fat percentage, diastolic blood pressure and TG were higher in the eating out group than in the non-eating out group. CONCLUSION: From 2000 to 2011, the eating out rate of males in China showed an upward trend, and a downward trend after 2011. At the same time, the energy contribution of eating out foods is increasing. Eating out was associated with major food and nutrients intake and indicators of nutritional status in male adults.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in mild cognitive impairment(MCI) and sociodemographic disparity among adults aged 55 years and above in 4 provinces of China. METHODS: A total of 4687 adults aged 55 years and above from Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Disease who did not have Alzheimer's disease, participated in both rounds of the survey, and had complete baseline sociodemographic data and two rounds of data on cognitive function were selected. Generalized estimation equations were used to analyse the effect of sociodemographic factors on MCI. RESULTS: The detection rates of MCI in adults aged 55 years and above without Alzheimer's disease in 4 provinces of China in 2018 and 2020 were 48.56% and 42.56% respectively. MCI occurred in 30.11% of those with normal cognition(NC) at baseline, and 44.24% of those with MCI at baseline reverted to NC. The risk of MCI increased and the likelihood of MCI reversion decreased with increasing age and decreasing per capita monthly household income. In the baseline NC population, the risk of MCI in the junior high school and above group was 35% lower than that in the illiterate group(RR=0.65, 95%CI 0.53-0.80), the risk of MCI was lower in those living in rural areas(RR=0.56, 95%CI 0.49-0.65), and the risk of MCI was 1.17 times(95%CI 1.03-1.32) higher in those with a history of chronic diseases than in those without it. In the baseline MCI population, the likelihood of MCI reversion increased with education, the likelihood of MCI reversion was 1.04 times higher for workers than for non-workers(95%CI 1.00-1.08). CONCLUSION: The incidence and reversal rates of MCI were high in adults aged ≥55 years in four provinces of China. Advanced age, low education and low income level are risk factors for cognitive dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To revise the dietary evaluation method of the elderly, and scientifically evaluate the dietary quality. METHODS: Delphi method was used to revise a diet quality evaluation method for the elderly according to expert consultation and statistical analysis. The recommended recipes in The Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents(2016) were selected for preliminary verification. RESULTS: Two rounds of expert consultation were conducted, 25 experts in the industry were invited. The withdraw rate of two rounds were 100% and 84%, respectively. The authoritative coefficient were 0.82 and 0.80, the degree of familiarity was 0.92, and the basis for determination were 0.73 and 0.70, respectively. The coordination coefficient W value were 0.095 and 0.098 respectively. CONCLUSION: Delphi method had some advantages in the revision of dietary index for the elderly. Dietary quality index had some practicability, but it still needs further verification and improvement.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of cardio-metabolic(CM) risk in women aged 15-49 years in 4 provinces of China and the influence of socioeconomic factors on them. METHODS: A total of 2851 women aged 15-49 years from Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Disease in 2018 were selected. Obesity, central obesity, elevated triglyceride(TG), elevated total cholesterol(TC), decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), elevated blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and risk factor aggregation were analyzed. χ~2 test was used for univariate analysis, multinomial Logit model was used to evaluate the relationship between socioeconomic factors and CM risk factors, and Cochran-Armitage trend test was used for trend analysis. RESULTS: The detection rate of CM risk factors in this study from high to low were central obesity(26.76%), overweight(22.41%), pre central obesity(17.47%), decreased HDL-C(15.36%), elevated TG(11.78%), borderline elevated TC(11.40%), borderline elevated TG(11.12%), elevated blood pressure(9.71%) and hypertension(9.12%). The prevalence rates of CM risk factors were different among different age groups, income groups and education levels(P<0.05). In addition to decreased HDL-C, the prevalence of other metabolic risk factors increased with age(P_(trend)<0.05). With the improvement of educational level, the prevalence rates of overweight, obesity, central obesity, central obesity, elevated TG, decreased HDL-C, elevated blood pressure, hypertension, elevated blood pressure and diabetes showed a downward trend(P_(trend)<0.05). Multinomial Logit model showed that the rick of metabolic risk factors in the age group of 40 to 49 years old was higher than that in the younger age group aged 15-29 years, and was more significant in hypertension, elevated blood pressure and elevated blood glucose, which were 8.51 times(95% CI 5.45-13.27), 3.14 times(95%CI 2.20-4.48)and 2.66(95% CI 1.52-4.66)times of the younger age group, respectively. Women with high-income level have a higher risk of borderline elevated TC, elevated TC and borderline elevated LDL-C(OR=1.85, 95% CI 1.44-2.38;OR=2.01, 95% CI 1.25-3.22;OR=2.16, 95% CI 1.61-2.90), but the lower risk of overweight and elevated blood pressure(OR=0.79, 95% CI 0.64-0.98;OR=0.69, 95% CI 0.50-0.94). The risk of obesity, hypertension and diabetes of people with college degree or above was about 50% lower than those with junior high school education or below(OR=0.52, 95% CI 0.35-0.78;OR=0.43, 95% CI 0.27-0.67; OR=0.52, 95% CI 0.28-0.96). CONCLUSION: Central obesity, overweight, pre central obesity and HDL-C decrease were prominent CM risk factors in women aged 15-49 years in four provinces of China in 2018. The detection rate of CM risk factors is higher in women of high age group or low education level.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the percentage of energy intake from macronutrients and obesity in Chinese adult residents, and analyze the cut-off values of macronutrients for predicting obesity. METHODS: Data was collected in China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS)in 1991-2018. Adults who participated in at least two waves of the surveys and were not obese at baseline were selected as the study subjects. Obesity was defined as body mass index(BMI)≥28.0 kg/m~2. Generalized estimating equation was used to analyze the relationship between the percentage of energy intake from macronutrients and BMI and obesity, and receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC) was used to analyze the cut-off values of percentage of energy intake from macronutrients to predict obesity. RESULTS: The percentage of energy intake from protein and fat of adult residents in 15 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities) in China showed an increasing trend(P<0.01), and the percentage of energy intake from carbohydrate showed a decreasing trend(P<0.01) between 1991 and 2018. After adjusting for covariates, the group of percentage of energy intake from fat in 20%~30%(ß=0.05, 95%CI 0.01-0.08)and ≥30%(ß=0.15, 95%CI 0.11-0.18)were positively correlated with BMI compared with the group of percentage of energy intake from fat <20%, and the risk of obesity in 20%-30% and ≥ 30% was increased by 17%(OR=1.17, 95%CI 1.04-1.31)and 6%(OR=1.06, 95%CI 1.24-1.56), respectively. Compared with the group of the percentage of energy intake from carbohydrate < 50%, the group of 50% to 65%(ß=-0.08, 95% CI-0.11--0.05) and ≥ 65%(ß=-0.17, 95%CI-0.20--0.13) was negatively correlated with BMI, and the percentage of energy intake from carbohydrate ≥ 65% reduced the risk of obesity(OR=0.71, 95%CI 0.63-0.80). CONCLUSION: Carbohydrate intake was inversely correlated with the risk of obesity, and fat intake was positively correlated with the risk of obesity. Moderate intake of carbohydrates and reduced fat intake can prevent obesity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the dairy consumption among children and adolescents aged 7-17 in China. METHODS: 10 rounds of follow-up data from the "China Health and Nutrition Survey" from 1991 to 2018 were collected, and individuals aged 7-17 were selected as the study subjects. Dietary data was collected by using 3-day 24-hour dietary review method and household weighing accounting method(edible oils and seasonings). Dairy consumption was calculated by converting various dairy products into liquid milk intake using the China Food Composition. After excluding those with missing demographic information, missing data from the "3 days and 24 hours" dietary survey, and abnormal daily energy intake, 18 529 participants were included in the final analysis. Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the trend of changes in dairy intake. RESULTS: The dairy consumption rate increased from 2.8% in 1991 to 42.3% in 2018, while it increased from 8.4% to 58.8% in urban and from 0.9% to 32.1% in rural areas. Meanwhile, the proportion of people whose dairy intake reaches the recommended intake(300 g/d) increased from 0.2% to 3.0%, and the proportion in rural area was 2.0%, which was lower than that in urban areas(4.9%). From 1991 to 2018, dairy intake increased at a rate of 12.97%(P=0.02), and the growth rate of urban and rural areas were 9.79%(P=0.03) and 15.67%(P<0.01), respectively. There was a faster growth trend from 1991-2004 compared to 2004-2018. The growth rate in urban and rural areas also showed different growth trends. CONCLUSION: The dairy intake of children and adolescents aged 7-17 in China improved significantly from 1991 to 2018, with higher consumption rate in urban areas than in rural areas, but it still need to be improved for health.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze food carbon footprint and its socio-demographic disparities among adults in China. METHODS: A total of 12 777 adults aged 18 years and above from the China Health and Nutrition Survey in 2018 who have completed dietary and socio-demographic data were analyzed. The information of food intake were collected by 24 h recalls combined with the weighing of household seasonings. Food consumption was converted into energy intake by the China Food Composition Table. Carbon footprint of 26 food groups were calculated by the food carbon footprint database based on life-cycle assessment(LCA), multinomial logit model was used to analyze the association of socio-demographic factors and food carbon footprint. RESULTS: Average food carbon footprint were decreased with increasing age while increased with increasing income and education levels, and was higher among male than that among female, was higher among urban residents than that among rural residents, was higher in the south than that in the north. Multinomial logit analysis showed that compared with people aged 18-44, the likelihood of occurring high carbon footprint in 60y and above group were 29%(OR=0.71, 95%CI 0.61-0.83) lower than that occurring low carbon footprint. Women were 11%(OR=0.89, 95%CI 0.81-0.99) and 25%(OR=0.75, 95%CI 0.67-0.84) less likely to appear medium and high carbon footprint than low carbon footprint, compared with their male counterparts. In comparison to people living in cities, rural dwellers were 24%(OR=0.76, 95%CI 0.69-0.85) and 38%(OR=0.62, 95%CI 0.55-0.70) less likely to appear medium and high carbon footprint than low carbon footprint. People in the south were 3.89 times(95%CI 3.52-4.30) and 11.35 times(95%CI 10.01-12.88) more likely to occur medium and high carbon footprint than low carbon footprint, compared with people in the north. Participants were more likely to occur medium carbon footprint and high carbon footprint with the increasing income level(OR>1), and were more likely to occur high carbon footprint with the increasing education level(OR>1). CONCLUSION: The food carbon footprint of adults in China in 2018 show different socio-demographic disparities, gender, income and education level are significant factors.
