ABSTRACT

Light, a nondestructive and remotely controllable external stimulus, effectively triggers a variety of electron-transfer phenomena in metal complexes. One prime example includes using light in molecular cyanide-bridged [FeCo] bimetallic Prussian blue analogues, where it switches the system between the electron-transferred metastable state and the system's ground state. If this process is coupled to a ferroelectric-type phase transition, the generation and disappearance of macroscopic polarization, entirely under light control, become possible. In this research, we successfully executed a nonpolar-to-polar phase transition in a trinuclear cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co] complex crystal via directional electron transfer. Intriguingly, by exposing the crystal to the wavelength of light─785 nm─without any electric field─we can drive this ferroelectric phase transition to completely depolarize the crystal, during which a measurable electric current response can be detected. These discoveries signify an important step toward the realization of fully light-controlled ferroelectric memory devices.

ABSTRACT

The current small-scale synthesis and relatively large size of Cu2O have limited its practical applications. Herein, we developed a hydrolysis strategy to prepare phase-pure Cu2O networks composed of small granules (ca. 25 nm) on a gram scale. The preparation involves in situ hydrolyzing the Hx[CuxCl2x] complexes prereduced in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF). The DMF-soluble Hx[CuxCl2x] complexes are critical for the homogeneous nucleation of CuCl seeds and subsequent hydrolysis, allowing for separate control over the nucleation and growth stages to regulate the formation of Cu2O networks. The novel Cu2O networks possess numerous exposed active sites and hierarchical porosities, conferring high catalytic activity and fast mass transfer capability. The inherent peroxidase-mimic activity of Cu2O is severely inhibited under neutral conditions but can be triggered by Cr6+, enabling the colorimetric assay of Cr6+ with the assistance of the oxidation-induced color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. Through density functional theory calculation, we confirmed that the attachment of Cr6+ on the Cu2O surface reduced the dissociation energy of H2O2, enhancing the enzyme-mimic activity. The colorimetric detection method demonstrated a sensitive and specific assay capability for Cr6+ (LOD = 0.095 µM). Our work offers a straightforward protocol for novel design of metal or metal-based nanomaterials for nanozymes or other applications.

ABSTRACT

As a remote and non-contact stimulus, light offers the potential for manipulating the polarization of ferroelectric materials without physical contact. However, in current research, the non-contact write-read (erase) process lacks direct observation through the stable current as output signal. To address this limitation, we investigated the photoinduced polarization switching capabilities of the cyanide-bridged compound [Fe2Co] using visible light, leading to the achievement of rewritable polarization. By subjecting [Fe2Co] crystals to alternating irradiation with 785 nm and 532 nm light, the polarization changes exhibited a distinct square wave pattern, confirming the reliability of the writing and erasing processes. Initialization involved exposing specific crystal units to 532 nm light for storing "1" or "0" information, while reading was accomplished by scanning the units with 785 nm light, resulting in brief current pulses for "1" states and no current signal for "0" states. This research unveils new possibilities for optical storage systems, paving the way for efficient and rewritable data storage and retrieval technologies, such as the next-generation memories.

ABSTRACT

Molecular-based magnetoelectric materials are among the most promising materials for next-generation magnetoelectric memory devices. However, practical application of existing molecular systems has proven difficult largely because the polarization change is far lower than the practical threshold of the ME memory devices. Herein, we successfully obtained an [FeCo] dinuclear complex that exhibits a magnetic field-induced spin crossover process, resulting in a significant polarization change of 0.45 µC cm-2. Mössbauer spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that the asymmetric structural change, coupled with electron redistribution, leads to the observed polarization change. Our approach provides a new strategy toward rationally enhancing the polarization change.

PURPOSE: Emerging data have indicated that nephrolithiasis is possibly associated with subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD). Considering that a significant proportion of obstructive CAD in non-elderly individuals occurs in those without detectable calcium score (CACS), this study aimed to investigate whether nephrolithiasis is still associated with CAD as assessed by coronary computed tomography (CT)-derived luminal stenosis [using Gensini score (GS)]. METHODS: A total of 1170 asymptomatic adults without known CAD who underwent health examinations were recruited. Nephrolithiasis was assessed using abdominal ultrasonography (US). Individuals with a self-reported stone history, but no evidence of nephrolithiasis were excluded. The CACS and GS were measured using 256-slice coronary CT. RESULTS: Nearly half of these patients had a CACS > 0 (48.1%), and a higher prevalence of nephrolithiasis was observed than in those who had zero CACS (13.1% vs. 9.7%). However, no significant intergroup difference in GS was detected. A greater proportion of stone formers than non-stone formers had a higher risk category, whereas no significant difference was noted in Gensini category. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that the CACS independently predicted the presence of nephrolithiasis after adjustment. Importantly, we found that stone formers had a nearly threefold higher risk than non-stone formers of developing severe coronary calcification (CAC > 400). CONCLUSIONS: Nephrolithiasis was significantly associated with coronary artery calcification presence and severity, but not coronary luminal stenosis in patients without known CAD. Accordingly, the relationship between stone disease and CAD remains controversial, and additional studies are imperative to validate these findings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High blood pressure (BP) indices, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) predict cardiovascular diseases and mortality. However, the association of these BP indices with arterial stiffness (AS) in the normotensive population (BP < 120/80 mmHg) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Study participants who underwent health checkups at a tertiary referred center were recruited between November 2018 to December 2019. 2129 participants were enrolled after excluding those aged <18 years old, with elevated BP, history of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, or with incomplete data. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) values were examined for evaluation of AS. Participants with higher blood pressure indices had significantly higher baPWV. Multiple linear regression revealed that all BP indices were positively associated with baPWV. According to the binary logistic regression analysis, participants in the higher SBP and MAP quartiles were significantly related to AS. The odds ratio (OR) for SBP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were 6.06, 10.06 and 17.78 whereas the OR for MAP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were: 5.07, 5.28 and 10.34. For DBP and PP, only participants belonging to the highest quartile were associated with AS(OR for DBP Q4 vs. Q1: 2.51; PP Q4 vs Q1: 1.94). CONCLUSIONS: BP indices were linearly related to the baPWV. Normotensive participants with higher quartiles of SBP, DBP, MAP, and PP, remained associated with increased AS. The SBP and MAP levels exhibited a more prominent relationship with AS.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that women with significant pelvic organ prolapse (POP), particularly of the anterior vaginal wall, may have voiding dysfunction (VD). Although the VD mechanism due to cystocele is not fully understood, different vaginal compartments have rarely been closely examined. This study attempted to further elucidate the correlation between POP and VD through a new subgroup classification using cystoscopy. METHODS: This study reviewed clinical records of 49 women who underwent cystocele repair. All patients were scheduled for laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy, preoperatively underwent uroflowmetry and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) measurement, and completed pelvic floor function questionnaires. Bladder examination by cystoscopy was additionally performed using the lithotomy position with the Valsalva maneuver. RESULTS: Subjects were divided into four groups according to hernia orifice presence determined by cystoscopy, which included the trigone type, posterior wall type, trigone and urethra type, and trigone and posterior wall type. The posterior wall type had statistically higher PVR values versus the trigone and posterior wall type (P = 0.013). The posterior wall type had statistically lower values for average urine flow rate versus the urethra and trigone type (P = 0.020). There were no significant differences noted in the pelvic floor function questionnaires among the four groups. CONCLUSIONS: A new bladder defect classification based upon hernia orifice location was associated with lower urinary tract function. Posterior wall hernia presence caused significant voiding function deterioration. This new subgroup classification, which can more clearly identify and indicate bladder function, is also comparable among patients.

ABSTRACT

Using light as a local heat source to induce a temporary pyroelectric current is widely recognized as an effective way to control the polarization of crystalline materials. In contrast, harnessing light directly to modulate the polarization of a crystal via excitation of the electronic bands remains less explored. In this study, we report an FeII spin crossover crystal that exhibits photoinduced macroscopic polarization change upon excitation by green light. When the excited crystal relaxes to the ground state, the corresponding pyroelectric current can be detected. An analysis of the structures, magnetic properties and the Mössbauer and infrared spectra of the complex, supported by calculations, revealed that the polarization change is dictated by the directional relative movement of ions during the spin transition process. The spin transition and polarization change occur simultaneously in response to light stimulus, which demonstrates the enormous potential of polar spin crossover systems in the field of optoelectronic materials.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the correlation between pleural fluid interleukin-33 (IL-33) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) and peripheral blood tuberculosis T cell spot detection (T-SPOT.TB), and the combined value of the three tests for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy. METHODS: 79 patients with pleural effusion admitted from June 2017 to December 2018 were enrolled. They were divided into tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) group (57 cases, 72.2%) and malignant pleural effusion group (17 cases, 21.5%), pneumonia-like pleural effusion group (5 cases, 6.3%). Correlation between pleural fluid IL-33, pleural effusion ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB was analyzed, comparison of the three separate and combined diagnostic efficacy was also performed. RESULTS: The levels of IL-33, ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB in patients with TPE were significantly higher than those in non-TPE (P < 0.001). The level of pleural fluid IL-33 was positively correlated with pleural effusion ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB. The Area under the ROC curve (AUC) of TPE diagnosed by pleural IL-33, ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB were 0.753, 0.912 and 0.865, respectively. AUC for combined detection of pleural effusion IL-33, ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB is the largest, with a value of 0.962. Specificity is 100% and sensitivity is 88.5%. CONCLUSION: Combined detection of pleural effusion IL-33, ADA and peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB can improve the diagnostic efficacy of tuberculous pleurisy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We aim to investigate prognostic effects of carotid strain (CS) and strain rate (CSR) in hypertension. METHODS: We prospectively recruited 120 patients being treated for hypertension (65.8 ± 11.8 years, 58% male) in this observational study. Peak circumferential CS and peak CSR after ejection were identified using two-dimensional speckle tracking ultrasound. Major cardiovascular events were any admission for stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and heart failure. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up period of 63.6 ± 14.5 months, 14 (12%) patients had cardiovascular events. Age (75.3 ± 9.2 vs 64.6 ± 11.6 years; p = 0.001), systolic blood pressure (131.8 ± 15.5 vs 143.1 ± 16.6 mm Hg; p = 0.021), diastolic blood pressure (74.6 ±11.4 vs 82.1 ± 12.2 mm Hg; p = 0.039), use of diuretics (71 vs 92%; p = 0.014), carotid CS (2.17 ± 1.02 vs 3.28 ± 1.14 %; p = 0.001), and CSR (.28 ± .17 vs .51 ± .18 1/s; p < 0.001) were significantly different between the patients who did and did not reach the end-points. Multivariate Cox regression analysis controlling for age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and use of diuretics showed that CS (HR .425, 95%CI .223-.811, p = 0.009) and CSR (HR .001, 95%CI .000-.072, p = 0.001) were independent predictors for cardiovascular events. CONCLUSION: In conclusions, decreased CS and CSR were associated with cardiovascular events in hypertension.

ABSTRACT

The global depression population is showing a significant increase. Hemerocallis fulva L. is a common Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its flower buds are known to have ability to clear away heat and dampness, detoxify, and relieve depression. Ancient TCM literature shows that its roots have a beneficial effect in calming the spirit and even the temper in order to reduce the feeling of melancholy. Therefore, it is inferred that the root of Hemerocallis fulva L. can be used as a therapeutic medicine for depression. This study aims to uncover the pharmacological mechanism of the antidepressant effect of Hemerocallis Radix (HR) through network pharmacology method. During the analysis, 11 active components were obtained and screened using ADME-absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion- method. Furthermore, 267 HR targets and 740 depressive disorder (DD) targets were gathered from various databases. Then protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of HR and DD targets were constructed and cluster analysis was applied to further explore the connection between the targets. In addition, gene ontology (GO) enrichment and pathway analysis was applied to further verify that the biological process related to the target protein is associated with the occurrence of depression disorder. In conclusion, the most important bioactive components-anthraquinone, kaempferol, and vanillic acid-can alleviate depression symptoms by regulating MAOA, MAOB, and ESR1. The proposed network pharmacology strategy provides an integrating method to explore the therapeutic mechanism of multi-component drugs on a systematic level.

ABSTRACT

The low luminance efficiency, poor reliability and parasitic peaks have greatly limited the commercialization of deep ultraviolet (DUV) light-emitting diodes. Tasks of identifying the culprits of these deficits are of paramount importance but remains unaccomplished. We employ the full-range temperature (20 K -300 K) measurement on 275-nm DUV devices that subjected to a 15-hour current-stress aging. The results suggest that the primary culprit of fast luminous decay is the proliferation of non-radiative centers. The origins of two main parasitic peaks are identified. The 310-nm peak is considered to solely come from deep-level radiative centers (DLRCs) that only dwell in the active region. Whereas, the 400-nm peak is proven to be dual-sources. One is related to the DLRCs in the active region, which only can be observed at very low currents; the other emerging at higher currents are associated with similar kinds of DLRCs located in the p-region, which only are excited when electrons overflow. This new discovery also demonstrates that a thorough investigation on the interplay among carriers and various types of defects should be conducted on the basis of the measurement that is taken under a wide temperature range, as well as under a proper forward voltage. This is to let the quasi-Fermi level shift across deep defect levels, the band-edge, and to over-band, whereby these recombination sites are exposed to deficit, moderate and saturated electron environment so that their natures can be well tested.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) has been used extensively as a food ingredient and medicinally, but the effect on asthmatic airway inflammation has not been studied in detail. We accordingly explored the protective effects exerted by various garlic fraction extracts against airway inflammation with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p)-induced allergic asthma in vivo and in vitro. Garlic extraction was realized using n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, n-butanol, and water in sequence to obtain different fraction extracts. Mice were orally administered different fractions (80 mg/kg) daily for four weeks. The histological results showed that the water fraction could ameliorate lung-based goblet cell hyperplasia, inflammatory cell infiltration, and mucus hypersecretion. The water fraction extracts decreased IgE and IgG1, and they decreased inflammatory cells as quantified in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF); however, they increased IgG2a in serum. Moreover, the water fraction extracts increased IFN-γ and IL-12 (both constituting Th1 cytokines) in BALF, but they reduced IL-13, -4, and -5 (all constituting Th2 cytokines), and also inhibited the expression of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α. The water fraction also inhibited the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signal pathways in A549 cells. These findings suggest that water fraction extracts of garlic have a clear anti-inflammatory effect on Der p-induced allergic asthma.

ABSTRACT

A reasonable and efficient strategy for the construction of hyper-cross-linked porous MoS2-CD-polymer frameworks (MoS2CDPFs) was demonstrated. Here, MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) can be decorated with amino functionalized ß-cyclodextrin, producing a nanoscale structural motif (MoS2@CD) for the synthesis of MoS2CDPFs. We demonstrated that CD polymer (CDP) as linker can be uniformly incorporated into the frameworks. Except for the pores created between MoS2 NSs, polymer doping generates extra interspace between MoS2 NSs and CD monomer. Interestingly, the resultant MoS2CDPFs can rapidly sequester aromatic phenolic micropollutant bisphenol A (0.1 mM) from water with 93.2% adsorption capacity, which is higher than that of MoS2, MoS2@CD, and CDP. The intercalation between MoS2 sheets with CDP imparts the frameworks durability in adsorption/desorption of aromatic phenolic micropollutants. Remarkably, the removal efficiency reduced only 3% after 10 regeneration-reuse cycles. These findings demonstrated that the porous MoS2-CD-polymer-based frameworks are promising adsorbents for rapid, flow-through water remediation.

Depression is a common mental disorder that has been linked to a decrease in the expression of serotonin and/or the serotonin transporter in the brain. Antidepressants that target the monoaminergic system are widely used in the clinical setting. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor δ (PPAR δ) overexpression or activation is thought to improve depression-like behaviours in rodents. The present study was designed to characterize the changes in PPARδ expression in the hippocampus in rats with stress-induced depression. We used an unpredictable chronic mild stress (CMS) model in rats to study the role of PPARδ in the hippocampus. Behaviour was evaluated via a forced swim test (FST), a tail suspension test (TST), and a sucrose preference test (SPT). Then, the changes in PPARδ expression and other signals were determined using Western blots. We found that PPARδ expression in the hippocampus was markedly reduced in rats with depression. Moreover, the expression of the serotonin transporter was also significantly decreased. Treatment with a PPARδ agonist enhanced the expression of PPARδ and the serotonin transporter in the hippocampus of rats with stress-induced depression. Additionally, treatment with a PPARδ agonist increased the expression of the serotonin transporter in cultured hippocampal (H19-7) cells, and this action was ablated in the absence of PPARδ, which was attenuated with shRNA. Taken together, we found that PPARδ plays an important role in the regulation of serotonin transporter expression and that chronic stress may lower PPARδ expression in the brain via apoptosis and may attenuate serotonin transporter expression, thus inducing depression in rats.

ABSTRACT

Although histidine kinases (HKs) are critical sensors of external stimuli in prokaryotes, the mechanisms by which their sensor domains control enzymatic activity remain unclear. Here, we report the full-length structure of a blue light-activated HK from Erythrobacter litoralis HTCC2594 (EL346) and the results of biochemical and biophysical studies that explain how it is activated by light. Contrary to the standard view that signaling occurs within HK dimers, EL346 functions as a monomer. Its structure reveals that the light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) sensor domain both controls kinase activity and prevents dimerization by binding one side of a dimerization/histidine phosphotransfer-like (DHpL) domain. The DHpL domain also contacts the catalytic/ATP-binding (CA) domain, keeping EL346 in an inhibited conformation in the dark. Upon light stimulation, interdomain interactions weaken to facilitate activation. Our data suggest that the LOV domain controls kinase activity by affecting the stability of the DHpL/CA interface, releasing the CA domain from an inhibited conformation upon photoactivation. We suggest parallels between EL346 and dimeric HKs, with sensor-induced movements in the DHp similarly remodeling the DHp/CA interface as part of activation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coreopsis tinctoria is a traditional remedy for the management of various diseases including hepatitis. The hepatoprotective role of the plant is not scientifically explored till now. This study was designed to investigate the hepatoprotective potentials of the ethanol extract from C. tinctoria (CTEtOH) using an animal model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury. METHODS: CTEtOH (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg) and silymarin (200 mg/kg) were administered to the experimental mice for 7 days followed by 0.2% CCl4 (10 mL/kg of body weight (bw), ip), then all mice were sacrificed after 24 h. The serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were measured. Histological analysis of liver was performed. The tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and antioxidant enzymatic activities were also measured.. RESULTS: The results revealed that the serum ALT and AST levels significantly decreased after treatment with CTEtOH. Moreover, histological analyses indicated that CTEtOH (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg) and silymarin reduced the extent of CCl4-induced liver lesions. CTEtOH (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg) reduced the levels of malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1ß). Furthermore, CTEtOH (1.0 g/kg) reduced the level of IL-6. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase, significantly increased after treatment with CTEtOH (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg) and that of glutathione peroxidase increased after treatment with 1.0 g/kg of CTEtOH. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the hepatoprotective effect of CTEtOH against CCl4-induced acute liver injury in mice, and the underlying hepatoprotective mechanisms are associated with antioxidant and antiproinflammatory activities.

Taiwan wild grape (Vitis thunbergii var. taiwaniana; VTT) is an important traditional herbal medicine used to treat muscle injuries and acute and chronic pain of the ligaments. Information on its bioactivity and the underlying mechanisms, which have not been elucidated thus far, is needed to demonstrate its value for pharmacological and clinical use. This study presents evidence to clarify the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of an ethanolic extract of VTT stem (VTTEtOH) and the possible molecular mechanisms involved in such biactivities. In the mice, VTTEtOH significantly reduced the acetic acid-induced writhing response (P < 0.01), formalin-induced licking time (P < 0.01), and edema paw volume at 4 and 5 h after λ-carrageenan injection. VTTEtOH obviously decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (P < 0.01), interleukin (IL)-1ß (P < 0.05), interleukin (IL)-6 (P < 0.001), nuclear factor-kappa B (P < 0.001), iNOS (P < 0.001), cyclooxygenase-2 (P < 0.001) and Nitric oxide (P < 0.001) in edema-paw tissue. The molecular mechanisms underlying these effects might involve significant inhibition of the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 through suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression and reduction of the levels of various inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and nitric oxide. Our findings provided pharmacological and histopathological evidences that VTTEtOH alleviates inflammatory pain-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The extension catheter was originally developed to facilitate stent delivery to challenging lesions. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of using an extension catheter in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). METHODS: Two interventional cardiologists reviewed the records of all consecutive patients who, between November 2011 and October 2015, had undergone PCI with a GuideLiner or Heartrail ST-01 extension catheter. Clinical demographics, vessel characteristics, procedural details, and outcomes were recorded. RESULTS: We identified 136 (3.7%) eligible patients (male: 81.6%; mean age: 66.2 ± 11.2 years) in 3665 PCI procedures. Seventy-two (52.9%) cases required increased support to cross severely calcified lesions. The remainder were coronary tortuosity [47 (34.6%)], chronic total occlusions [35 (25.7%)], previously deployed proximal stents [16 (11.8%)], and anomalous origin of coronary artery [9 (6.6%)]. There were 43 type B and 91 type C lesions. The success rate was 86.8% (118) and the complication rate was 6.6% (7 coronary dissections, 1 thrombus formation, and 1 stent dislodgement). All complications were successfully managed using endovascular interventions. The failure rate significantly (25.5%) increased if more than 3 of 6 peri-procedural factors coexisted: 1) long lesions (> 30 mm), 2) tortuosity, 3) calcification, 4) chronic total occlusion, 5) previous intervention history, and 6) previously deployed proximal stents. CONCLUSIONS: Using an extension catheter for challenging complex PCIs is safe and highly successful if the practitioner has adequate experience manipulating extension catheters.
