ABSTRACT

As the failure-induced component (FIC) in the vibration signals of bearings transmits through housings and shafts, potential phase synchronization is excited among multichannel signals. As phase synchrony analysis (PSA) does not involve the chaotic behavior of signals, it is suitable for characterizing the operating state of bearings considering complicated vibration signals. Therefore, a novel PSA method was developed to identify and track the failure evolution of bearings. First, resonance demodulation and variational mode decomposition (VMD) were combined to extract the mono-component or band-limited FIC from signals. Then, the instantaneous phase of the FIC was analytically solved using Hilbert transformation. The generalized phase difference (GPD) was used to quantify the relationship between FICs extracted from different vibration signals. The entropy of the GPD was regarded as the indicator for quantifying failure evolution. The proposed method was applied to the vibration signals obtained from an accelerated failure experiment and a natural failure experiment. Results showed that phase synchronization in bearing failure evolution was detected and evaluated effectively. Despite the chaotic behavior of the signals, the phase synchronization indicator could identify bearing failure during the initial stage in a robust manner.

ABSTRACT

This work demonstrates experimental approaches to characterize a single multimode fiber imaging system without a reference beam. Spatial light modulation is performed with a digital micro-mirror device that enables high-speed binary amplitude modulation. Intensity-only images are recorded by the camera and processed by a Bayesian inference based algorithm to retrieve the phase of the output optical field as well as the transmission matrix of the fiber. The calculated transmission matrix is validated by three standards: prediction accuracy, transmission imaging, and focus generation. Also, it is found that information on mode count and eigenchannels can be extracted from the transmission matrix by singular value decomposition. This paves the way for a more compact and cheaper single multimode fiber imaging system for many demanding imaging tasks.

ABSTRACT

Background: Ensuring enhanced delivery of care to women Veterans is a top Veterans Affairs (VA) priority; however, women are historically underrepresented in research that informs evidence-based health care. A primary barrier to women's participation is the inability to engage with research in person due to a number of documented challenges. The VA Million Veteran Program (MVP) is committed to increasing access for women Veterans to participate in research, thereby better understanding conditions specific to this population and how disease manifests differently in women compared to men. The goal of this work is to describe the results of the MVP Women's Campaign, an effort designed to increase outreach to and awareness of remote enrollment options for women Veterans. Materials and Methods: The MVP Women's Campaign launched two phases between March 2021 and April 2022: the Multimedia Phase leveraged a variety of strategic multichannel communication tactics and the Email Phase focused on direct email communication to women Veterans. The effect of the Multimedia Phase was determined using t-tests and chi-square tests, as well as logistic regression models to compare demographic subgroups. The Email Phase was evaluated using comparisons of the enrollment rate across demographic groups through a multivariate adjusted logistic regression model. Results: Overall, 4694 women Veterans enrolled during the MVP Women's Campaign (54% during the Multimedia Phase and 46% during the Email Phase). For the Multimedia Phase, the percentage of older women online enrollees increased, along with women from the southwest and western regions of the United States. Differences for women Veteran online enrollment across different ethnicity and race groups were not observed. During the Email Phase, the enrollment rate increased with age. Compared to White women Veterans, Blacks, Asians, and Native Americans were significantly less likely to enroll while Veterans with multiple races were more likely to enroll. Conclusion: The MVP Women's Campaign is the first large-scale outreach effort focusing on recruitment of women Veterans into MVP. The combination of print and digital outreach tactics and direct email recruitment resulted in over a fivefold increase in women Veteran enrollees during a 7-month period. Attention to messaging and communication channels, combined with a better understanding of effective recruitment methods for certain Veteran populations, allows MVP the opportunity to advance health and health care not only for women Veterans, but beyond. Lessons learned will be applied to increase other populations in MVP such as Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, younger Veterans, and Veterans with certain health conditions.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although previous studies have suggested cocoa products may promote cardiovascular health in the general population, no public data are available from patients receiving care in a national integrated health care system. Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that regular chocolate consumption is associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) events among participants of the Million Veteran Program (MVP). Secondary analysis examined if the main hypothesis was observed among participants with type 2 diabetes. Methods: We analyzed data from MVP participants who completed the food frequency section of the MVP Lifestyle Survey and were free of CAD at the time of survey completion. CAD events during follow-up (International Statistical Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision codes 410-411 and 413-414, and Tenth Revision codes I20-I25 except I25.2) were assessed using electronic health records. We fitted a Cox proportional hazard model to estimate the RR of CAD. Results: Of 188,447 MVP enrollees with survey data, mean ± SD age was 64 ± 12.0 y and 90% were men. For regular chocolate (28.3 g/serving) consumption of <1 serving/mo, 1-3 servings/mo, 1 serving/wk, 2-4 servings/wk, and ≥5 servings/wk, crude incidence rates (per 1000 person-years) for fatal and nonfatal CAD events or coronary procedures were 20.2, 17.5, 16.7, 17.1, and 16.9, respectively, during a mean follow-up of 3.2 y. After adjusting for age, sex, race, and lifestyle factors, the corresponding HRs (95% CIs) were 1.00 (ref), 0.92 (0.87, 0.96), 0.88 (0.83, 0.93), 0.89 (0.84, 0.95), and 0.89 (0.84, 0.96), respectively (P for linear trend < 0.0001). In a secondary analysis of 47,265 diabetics, we did not observe a decreasing trend in CAD mortality among those who consumed ≥1 serving of chocolate a month compared with those who consumed <1 serving/mo. Conclusions: Regular chocolate consumption was associated with a lower risk of CAD among veterans, but was not associated with cardiovascular disease risk in veterans with type 2 diabetes.

ABSTRACT

No data exist on the prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health metrics in a national sample of U.S. veterans. We assessed the prevalence of ideal Life's Simple Seven (LSS) metrics in a cross-sectional study of 554,855 U.S. veterans enrolled in the Million Veteran Program (MVP) from 2011 to 2017. We used the American Heart Association's established criteria to categorize each LSS metric as either poor, intermediate, or ideal for a veteran at time of MVP enrollment. Information on adiposity/body mass index, smoking status, diet, and physical activity was obtained from self-reported survey data, and clinical measurements for total cholesterol, blood pressure, and plasma glucose were obtained from electronic health records. Complete data on all LSS health factors were available for 201,745 veterans. The prevalence of having 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 ideal cardiovascular health metrics was 29.2%, 34.6%, 22.6%, 10.0%, 3.0%, 0.6%, <0.1%, and 0%, respectively. The frequency of ideal body mass index, physical activity, smoking status, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and plasma glucose was 19.4%, 3.8%, 27.0%, 21.8%, 17.8%, and 34.5%, respectively, in our study population. Among the 7 metrics, MVP participants were least likely to achieve ideal diet (0.4%), particularly the recommendation for fruit and vegetable (at least 4.5 cups/day) intake. Our data show an extremely low prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health factors among veterans in the MVP, especially for diet and physical activity. These findings underscore the need to improve adherence to modifiable lifestyle factors that could result in subsequent reduction in cardiovascular disease burden among veterans.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Despite their powerful biologic activities conducive to protection against atherosclerosis, cancer and inflammatory diseases demonstrated in vitro, there is considerable doubt whether the polyphenolic constituents present in red wine and other dietary components are effective in vivo. OBJECTIVE: We have tested the absorptive efficiency of three of these constituents (trans-resveratrol, [+]-catechin and quercetin) when given orally to healthy human subjects in three different media. DESIGN: Twelve healthy males aged 25 to 45 were randomly assigned to three different groups consuming orally one of the following polyphenols: trans-resveratrol, 25 mg/70 kg; [+]-catechin 25 mg/70 kg; quercetin 10 mg/70 kg. Each polyphenol was randomly administered at 4-week intervals in three different matrices: white wine (11.5% ethanol), grape juice, and vegetable juice/homogenate. Blood was collected at zero time and at four intervals over the first four hours after consumption; urine was collected at zero time and for the following 24-h. The sums of free and conjugated polyphenols were measured in blood serum and urine by a gas-chromatographic method. RESULTS: All three polyphenols were present in serum and urine predominantly as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, reaching peak concentrations in the former around 30-min after consumption. The free polyphenols accounted for 1.7 to 1.9% (trans-resveratrol), 1.1 to 6.5% ([+]-catechin) and 17.2 to 26.9% (quercetin) of the peak serum concentrations. The absorption of trans-resveratrol was the most efficient as judged by peak serum concentration, area-under-the curve (4 h) and urinary 24-h excretion (16-17% of dose consumed). [+]-Catechin was the poorest by these criteria (urine 24-h excretion 1.2%-3.0% of dose consumed), with quercetin being intermediate (urine 24-h excretion 2.9%-7.0% of dose consumed). Some significant matrix effects were observed for the serum polyphenol concentrations, but in the case of urine no matrix promoted significantly higher excretion than the other two. CONCLUSIONS: The absorption of these three polyphenols is broadly equivalent in aqueous and alcoholic matrices but, at peak concentrations of 10 to 40 nmol/L, is inadequate to permit circulating concentrations of 5 to 100 micromol/L consistent with in vitro biologic activity. The voluminous literature reporting powerful in vitro anticancer and antiinflammatory effects of the free polyphenols is irrelevant, given that they are absorbed as conjugates.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the role of trichloro compounds as a potential cause of "cork taint" in wine, an assay for trichloroanisole (TCA) and trichlorophenol (TCP) in corks and wine was developed utilizing solid phase extraction on a C(18) cartridge followed by gas chromatography with mass selective detection. Recovery and imprecision for TCA were 86-102 and 1.6-5.8%, respectively, and for TCP 82-103% and 1.7-3.9%, respectively. Limits of detection and quantitation were 0.1 and 2 ng/L, respectively, for TCA, and 0.7 and 4 ng/L, respectively for TCP. A survey of 2400 commercial wines revealed a higher incidence of cork taint in white wine than in red and in wines utilizing composite cork closures; wines from central Europe and Spain had higher overall rates of contamination and those from Canada and Italy the lowest. Significant but modest associations were found between the TCA and TCP contents of the wines and corks, but many wines exhibiting cork taint had low or undetectable concentrations of TCA. Over a 12-month period, experimentally bottled wines exhibited a slow increase in TCA and TCP content while cork closures manifested a decrease; most bottles showing cork taint contained low levels of TCA, and TCP concentrations were well below the sensory threshold. Neither compound was cytotoxic to human cell lines in culture up to final concentrations of 500 ng/mL. It was concluded that these two trichloro compounds are, at most, minor components of cork taint in commercial wines.

ABSTRACT

Motion estimation in sequences of ultrasound echo signals is essential for a wide range of modern ultrasound-based signal processing applications. Pattern matching algorithms are generally used for finding the motion within sampling accuracy. Subsequently, 1D interpolation techniques are employed to find any motion smaller than sampling accuracy. In this paper, we propose several interpolation schemes that are suited for 2D motion estimation. Simulations using Field II ultrasound simulation software and experiments using an Ultrasonix Sonix RP imaging system with a L9-4/38 linear array transducer are used to study these techniques and compare their performance to other methods reported in the literature. The results show that the proposed interpolation methods outperform other common techniques in terms of bias and jitter. The axial and the lateral bias of the proposed methods are measured to be less than 1 microm and 5 microm, respectively, in both the simulated and the experimental data.
