ABSTRACT

Utilization of the interaction between spin and heat currents is the central focus of the field of spin caloritronics. Chiral phonons possessing angular momentum arising from the broken symmetry of a non-magnetic material create the potential for generating spin currents at room temperature in response to a thermal gradient, precluding the need for a ferromagnetic contact. Here we show the observation of spin currents generated by chiral phonons in a two-dimensional layered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite implanted with chiral cations when subjected to a thermal gradient. The generated spin current shows a strong dependence on the chirality of the film and external magnetic fields, of which the coefficient is orders of magnitude larger than that produced by the reported spin Seebeck effect. Our findings indicate the potential of chiral phonons for spin caloritronic applications and offer a new route towards spin generation in the absence of magnetic materials.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The effect of SPP1 in squamous cell carcinoma of the penis (PSCC) remained unknown. We attempted to clarify the function of the SPP1 gene in PSCC. METHOD: Eight paired penile cancer specimens (including penile cancer tissue, paracancerous tissue, and positive lymph node tissue) subjected to whole transcriptome sequencing were analysed to identify differentially expressed genes. We used immunohistochemistry to detect the expression of SPP1 protein and immune cell related proteins in penile cancer tissue. Then, we performed weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify the genes related to SPP1 in penile cancer tissue and positive lymph node tissue. Based on the GSE57955 dataset, the CIBERSORT and ssGSEA algorithms were carried out to investigate the immune environment of PSCC. GSVA analysis was conducted to identify the signaling pathways related to SPP1 subgroups. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was adopted to detect SPP1 level in the serum of 60 patients with penile cancer. RESULTS: Differential analysis indicated that SPP1 was the most differentially upregulated gene in both penile cancer tissues and positive lymph node tissues. Survival analysis suggested that the prognosis of the low-SPP1 group was significantly poorer than that of the high-SPP1 group. Subsequently, immune-related bioinformatics showed that SPP1 was significantly associated with B cells, CD8 + T cells, CD4 + T cells, macrophages, helper T cells, neutrophils and dendritic cells. The immunohistochemical results showed that the high-SPP1 group was characterized by relatively high expression of CD16 and relatively low expression of CD4. GSVA analysis indicated that high-SPP1 group was significantly associated with immune-related pathways such as PD-L1 expression and the PD-1 checkpoint pathway in cancer and the TNF signaling pathway. ELISA demonstrated that the serum level of SPP1 in patients with positive lymph node metastasis of penile cancer was significantly higher than that in patients with negative lymph node metastasis of penile cancer. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that the SPP1 gene might be an effective biomarker for predicting the prognosis and the efficacy of immunotherapy in PSCC patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of azvudine as compared to paxlovid for oral treatment of hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cohort of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Shandong provincial hospital between February 15 and March 15, 2023. The primary outcome was time to sustained clinical recovery through Day 28 and secondary outcomes included the percentage of participants who died from any cause by Day 28, the average hospitilization time and expenses, the changes in liver and kidney function and adverse events. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between azvudine and paxlovid in terms of time to sustained clinical recovery (p = 0.429) and death rates (p = 0.687). As for hospitalization time and fee, no significant differences were observed between azvudine group and paxlovid group (Hospitalization time: p = 0.633; Hospitalization fee: p = 0.820). In addition, there were no significant differences in the effects of the two drugs on liver and kidney function (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Among adults who were hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2 infection, azvudine was noninferior to paxlovid in terms of time to sustained clinical recovery, death rates, hospitalization time and cost, with few safety concerns. BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have found that parenting style significantly predicts emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) among Chinese adolescents, the mechanism between different parenting styles and EBPs requires in-depth investigation. In our study, we aimed to investigate the mediating effect of resilience, a positive psychological characteristic, between parenting style and EBPs among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used a multistage stratified cluster random sampling method to collect data in Shenyang, Liaoning Province from November to December 2019. Self-developed questionnaires were distributed to 1028 adolescents aged 10-18. Finally, the study consisted of 895 participants. The bootstrap method was used to investigate the role of resilience as a mediator in the relationship between different parenting styles and EBPs from a positive psychology perspective. RESULTS: The mean score of EBPs was 12.71 (SD = 5.77). After controlling for variables such as gender, age, left-behind children, family type and family income, resilience partially played a mediating role in the associations of paternal rejection (a × b = 0.051 BCa95%CI:0.023,0.080), maternal rejection (a × b = 0.055 BCa95%CI: 0.024, 0.086), paternal emotional warmth (a × b = -0.139 BCa95%CI: -0.182, -0.099) and maternal emotional warmth (a × b = -0.140 BCa95%CI: -0.182, -0.102), with EBPs. The effect sizes were11.28%, 11.51%, 40.76%, and 38.78%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Resilience could partially mediate the relationship between parenting style and EBPs, highlighting that parents should adopt a positive parenting style and that resilience improvement could be effective in reducing EBPs among Chinese adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Ferroportin (FPN), the body's sole iron exporter, is essential for maintaining systemic iron homeostasis. In response to either increased iron or inflammation, hepatocyte-secreted hepcidin binds to FPN, inducing its internalization and subsequent degradation. However, the E3 ubiquitin ligase that underlies FPN degradation has not been identified. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a novel mechanism involving the RNF217-mediated degradation of FPN. A combination of 2 different E3 screens revealed that the Rnf217 gene is a target of Tet1, mediating the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of FPN. Interestingly, loss of Tet1 expression causes an accumulation of FPN and an impaired response to iron overload, manifested by increased iron accumulation in the liver together with decreased iron in the spleen and duodenum. Moreover, we found that the degradation and ubiquitination of FPN could be attenuated by mutating RNF217. Finally, using 2 conditional knockout mouse lines, we found that knocking out Rnf217 in macrophages increases splenic iron export by stabilizing FPN, whereas knocking out Rnf217 in intestinal cells appears to increase iron absorption. These findings suggest that the Tet1-RNF217-FPN axis regulates iron homeostasis, revealing new therapeutic targets for FPN-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP7) is markedly expressed in patients with chronic kidney disease; its expression in dialysate and role in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) have not been well established. Methods: Participants undergoing PD from June 1st, 2015, to June 30th, 2020, were involved and were followed up every 3 months for the first year and every 6 months thereafter until death, PD withdrawal, or the end of the study. Data at each follow-up point were collected and analyzed for the association with congestive heart failure (CHF), PD withdrawal, and combined endpoint. Results: A total of 283 participants were included in this study. During a median follow-up of 21 months, 20 (7%) participants died, 93 (33%) withdrew from PD, and 105 (37%) developed CHF. A significantly increased level of serum and dialysate MMP7 was observed at baseline. Dialysate MMP7 presented a good linearity with serum MMP7. Baseline serum and dialysate MMP7 levels were associated with CHF in multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models. After categorization, participants with high baseline MMP7 levels had a higher incidence of CHF (42%), and the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.595 (1.023-2.488). Interestingly, participants with higher serum MMP7 levels were trended to use dialysate with higher glucose concentration. However, the ultrafiltration volumes were not significantly increased. Higher MMP7 levels were also positively associated with PD withdrawal and combined endpoint. Conclusions: The expression of MMP7 in serum and dialysate was markedly increased and was tightly associated with the risk of CHF in PD patients. This finding suggests that the measurement of MMP7 may inform strategies for managing CHF at an earlier stage.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of thromboelastography (TEG) in patients with colorectal cancer and to examine whether the TEG parameters can be used as potential markers for disease screening and prediction of disease severity. METHODS: One-hundred fifteen healthy controls (HC), 43 patients with benign adenoma (BA), and 387 patients with colorectal cancers (CRC) were included in the study. TEG parameters (reaction time, R; clot kinetics, K; alpha angle, α-angle; maximum amplitude, MA), conventional laboratory parameters, and clinical information were collected and analyzed among the HC, BA, and CRC groups. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were used for differential analysis. The correlation between TEG parameters and pathological information of CRC (differentiation degree, vaso-nerve infiltration, TNM stage) was analyzed. The differences in TEG parameters at different stages of disease and pre-/post operation were compared. RESULTS: Shorter K and higher α-angle/MA were found in patients with CRC compared with HC and BA (P < 0.001). TEG parameters demonstrated moderate diagnostic value (distinguish CRC from HC + BA: K-AUC = 0.693, α-angle-AUC = 0.687, MA-AUC = 0.700) in CRC but did not outperform traditional laboratory parameters. TEG hypercoagulability was closely associated with tumor markers (carcinoma embryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9) and pathological information (differentiation degree, vaso-nerve infiltration, and TNM stage) (P < 0.05). Trend analysis showed that K decreased, but α-angle/MA increased gradually as the tumor progressed (P < 0.001). K- and α-angle showed slightly better sensitivity in predicting advanced tumors compared to traditional laboratory parameters. In CRC patients, 3-6 months after tumor resection, K [from 1.8 (1.5, 2.3) to 1.9 (1.6, 2.6)], α-angle [from 65.3 (59.0, 68.6) to 63.7 (56.6, 68.5)], and MA [from 61.0 (58.2, 66.0) to 58.9 (55.8, 61.3)] exhibited modest improvements compared to their preoperative values (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: TEG parameters possess moderate diagnostic value in CRC diagnosis and predicting advanced tumors, and they are closely linked to surgical interventions. Although TEG parameters do not significantly outperform traditional laboratory parameters, they still hold promise as potential alternative indicators in CRC patients.

BACKGROUND: Fo-Shou-San (FSS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoction that can effectively treat vascular dementia (VD). In the face of unclear pharmacological mechanisms, we set out to validate that FSS treats chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH)-induced cognitive impairment in mice. METHODS: CCH animal model caused by permanent right unilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (rUCCAO) was established to verify that FSS could treat subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD). We performed novel object recognition test and Morris water maze test, observed morphological changes via HE and Nissl staining, and detected hippocampus apoptosis by TUNEL staining and oxidative stress by biochemical assays. Ferroptosis-related markers and NRF2/HO-1 signaling-related expressions were examined via qPCR and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: We found that FSS ameliorated cognitive disorders, and lessened oxidative stress by decreasing MDA and GSH-PX while increasing the reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione disulfide (GSSG) ratio, which are associated with ferroptosis. Additionally, FSS reduced expression of SLC7A11, GPX4, ROX and 4HNE, as vital markers of ferroptosis. Further, FSS regulated NRF2/HO-1 signaling by downregulating NRF2 and HO-1. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that FSS may ameliorate chronic cerebral hypoperfusion-induced cognitive deficits through regulation of the NRF2/HO-1 pathway against ferroptosis. Taken together, our study highlights the neuroprotective efficacy of FSS.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative brain disorder currently without satisfactory therapeutic treatments. Triggering receptors expressed on a myeloid cells-2 (Trem2) gene mutation has been reported as a powerful AD risk factor that induces Trem2 gene deletion aggravated microglia disfunction and Amyloid-ß (Aß) aggregation in the brain. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Danggui-Shaoyao-San (DSS) has shown therapeutic effect on alleviating the symptoms of AD. However, the neuroprotective effect and underlying mechanism of DSS against AD is still far from fully understood. METHODS: Double-label immunofluorescence and Western blotting were employed to evaluate the different polarization states of mouse BV2 microglial (BV2) cells after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or interleukin (IL)-4 treatment. Trem2 over-expression lentiviral vector and Trem2 siRNA were used respectively to evaluate the effect of Trem2 on microglia polarization via detecting the proteins expression of iNOS and arginase1 (Arg1) by Western blotting while the Aß-scavenging capacity of BV2 cells was assessed by flow cytometry. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) assay was performed to assess the effect of DSS on the viability of BV2 cells. Flow cytometry was used to investigate the effect of DSS on the Aß-scavenging capacity of BV2 cells treated with corresponding concentration of DSS-containing serum. Protein of Trem2 and the gene expression of the M1 or M2 phenotype in BV2 cells treated with DSS after Trem2 over-expression or silence were detected by Western blot and RT-qPCR, respectively. RESULTS: In vitro experiments. DSS exhibited anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective functions. It was found that Trem2 had an effect on inducing a shift of M1 microglia towards the M2 phenotype and enhanced the Aß-scavenging capacity of BV2 cells, further that DSS administration relieved inflammation by engulfing Aß through the activities of Trem2. Importantly, DSS treatment effectively increased the Aß-scavenging capacity of BV2 cells through accelerating the shift of M1 microglia towards an M2 phenotype via increasing Trem2 expression. CONCLUSIONS: Results demonstrated that DSS promoted the clearance of Aß through the regulation of microglia polarization via increased expression of Trem2 in BV2 cells.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that people with diabetes have a high risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The effect of diabetic medications on bone disease cannot be ignored. This meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of two types of glucose-lowering drugs, metformin and thiazolidinediones (TZD), on bone mineral density and bone metabolism in patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis were prospectively registered on PROSPERO, and the registration number is CRD42022320884. Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify clinical trials comparing the effects of metformin and thiazolidinediones on bone metabolism in patients with diabetes. The literature was screened by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two assessors independently assessed the quality of the identified studies and extracted relevant data. RESULTS: Seven studies involving 1656 patients were finally included. Our results showed that the metformin group had a 2.77% (SMD = 2.77, 95%CI [2.11, 3.43]; p < 0.00001) higher bone mineral density (BMD) than the thiazolidinedione group until 52 weeks; however, between 52 and 76 weeks, the metformin group had a 0.83% (SMD = -0.83, 95%CI: [-3.56, -0.45]; p = 0.01) lower BMD. The C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) and procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP) were decreased by 18.46% (MD = -18.46, 95%CI: [-27.98, -8.94], p = 0.0001) and 9.94% (MD = -9.94, 95%CI: [-16.92, -2.96], p = 0.005) in the metformin group compared with the TZD group.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in response to abiotic stresses in plants, by acting as cis- or trans-acting regulators of protein-coding genes. As a widely cultivated crop worldwide, maize is sensitive to salt stress particularly at the seedling stage. However, it is unclear how the expressions of protein-coding genes are affected by non-coding RNAs in maize responding to salt tolerance. RESULTS: The whole transcriptome sequencing was employed to investigate the differential lncRNAs and target transcripts responding to salt stress between two maize inbred lines with contrasting salt tolerance. We developed a flexible, user-friendly, and modular RNA analysis workflow, which facilitated the identification of lncRNAs and novel mRNAs from whole transcriptome data. Using the workflow, 12,817 lncRNAs and 8,320 novel mRNAs in maize seedling roots were identified and characterized. A total of 742 lncRNAs and 7,835 mRNAs were identified as salt stress-responsive transcripts. Moreover, we obtained 41 cis- and 81 trans-target mRNA for 88 of the lncRNAs. Among these target transcripts, 11 belonged to 7 transcription factor (TF) families including bHLH, C2H2, Hap3/NF-YB, HAS, MYB, WD40, and WRKY. The above 8,577 salt stress-responsive transcripts were further classified into 28 modules by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. In the salt-tolerant module, we constructed an interaction network containing 79 nodes and 3081 edges, which included 5 lncRNAs, 18 TFs and 56 functional transcripts (FTs). As a trans-acting regulator, the lncRNA MSTRG.8888.1 affected the expressions of some salt tolerance-relative FTs, including protein-serine/threonine phosphatase 2C and galactinol synthase 1, by regulating the expression of the bHLH TF. CONCLUSIONS: The contrasting genetic backgrounds of the two inbred lines generated considerable variations in the expression abundance of lncRNAs and protein-coding transcripts. In the co-expression networks responding to salt stress, some TFs were targeted by the lncRNAs, which further regulated the salt tolerance-related functional transcripts. We constructed a regulatory pathway of maize seedlings to salt stress, which was mediated by the hub lncRNA MSTRG.8888.1 and participated by the bHLH TF and its downstream target transcripts. Future work will be focused on the functional revelation of the regulatory pathway.

Electrochemical conversion of propene is a promising technique for manufacturing commodity chemicals by using renewable electricity. To achieve this goal, we still need to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for propene electrooxidation, which highly relies on understanding the reaction mechanism at the molecular level. Although the propene oxidation mechanism has been well investigated at the solid/gas interface under thermocatalytic conditions, it still remains elusive at the solid/liquid interface under an electrochemical environment. Here, we report the mechanistic studies of propene electrooxidation on PdO/C and Pd/C catalysts, considering that the Pd-based catalyst is one of the most promising electrocatalytic systems. By electrochemical in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a distinct reaction pathway was observed compared with conventional thermocatalysis, emphasizing that propene can be dehydrogenated at a potential higher than 0.80 V, and strongly adsorb via µ-C═CHCH3 and µ3-η2-C═CHCH3 configuration on PdO and Pd, respectively. The µ-C═CHCH3 is via bridge bonds on adjacent Pd and O atoms on PdO, and it can be further oxidized by directly taking surface oxygen from PdO, verified by the H218O isotope-edited experiment. A high surface oxygen content on PdO/C results in a 3 times higher turnover frequency than that on Pd/C for converting propene into propene glycol. This finding highlights the different reaction pathways under an electrochemical environment, which sheds light on designing next-generation electrocatalysts for propene electrooxidation.

Here, a total of 22 antibiotics and 4 sulfonamides metabolites were detected in lake water, sediments, and different depth of groundwater surrounding Chenhu Lake during the wet and dry seasons. N4-acetylsulfonamides (Ac-SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), and tetracyclines (TCs) were the main groups of antibiotics in the study area. In the whole lake environment, there were more types of antibiotics in the aquatic environments than in the sediments, and the antibiotics distribution was closely related to geographical location. Specifically, the average concentration of antibiotics in groundwater decreased with an increase in sampling site distance from the lake. All antibiotics, except oxytetracycline (OTC), showed a significant decline during the dry season that could be due to the implementation of lake conservation policies, which significantly helped reducing lake pollution. There were obvious differences in the distribution of antibiotics in distinct sedimentary environments. In the surface sediments, the antibiotics content in the reclamation and the perennially flooded areas was higher than in the lakeshore area. The hydraulic interactions in the perennial flooded area facilitated the deep migration of antibiotics into lake sediments. Correlation analysis revealed a good relevance between the distribution of antibiotics in lake water and groundwater. Redundancy analysis shows that dissolved oxygen and temperature were the main factors affecting the distribution of antibiotics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an index to quantify the multimorbidity burden in Chinese middle-aged and older community-dwelling individuals. METHODS: We included 20,035 individuals aged 45 and older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 19,297 individuals aged 65 and older from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Health outcomes of physical functioning (PF), basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL and IADL) and mortality were obtained. Based on self-reported disease status, we calculated five commonly used western multimorbidity indexes for CHARLS baseline participants. The one that predicted the health outcomes the best was selected and then modified through a linear mixed model using the repeated individual data in CHARLS. The performance of the modified index was internally and externally evaluated with CHARLS and CLHLS data. RESULTS: The multimorbidity-weighted index (MWI) performed the best among the five indexes. In the modified Chinese multimorbidity-weighted index (CMWI), the weights of the diseases varied greatly (range 0.2-5.1). The top three diseases with the highest impact were stroke, memory-related diseases and cancer, corresponding to weights of 5.1, 4.3 and 3.4, respectively. Compared with the MWI, the CMWI showed better model fits for PF and IADL with larger R2 and smaller Akaike information criterion, and comparable prediction performances for ADL, IADL and mortality (e.g. the same predictive accuracy of 0.80 for ADL disability). CONCLUSION: The CMWI is an adequate index to quantify the multimorbidity burden for Chinese middle-aged and older community-dwelling individuals. It can be directly computed via disease status examined in regular community health check-ups to facilitate health management.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for ground plane normal estimation of wheeled vehicles. In practice, the ground plane is dynamically changed due to braking and unstable road surface. As a result, the vehicle pose, especially the pitch angle, is oscillating from subtle to obvious. Thus, estimating ground plane normal is meaningful since it can be encoded to improve the robustness of various autonomous driving tasks (e.g., 3D object detection, road surface reconstruction, and trajectory planning). Our proposed method only uses odometry as input and estimates accurate ground plane normal vectors in real time. Particularly, it fully utilizes the underlying connection between the ego pose odometry (ego-motion) and its nearby ground plane. Built on that, an Invariant Extended Kalman Filter (IEKF) is designed to estimate the normal vector in the sensor's coordinate. Thus, our proposed method is simple yet efficient and supports both camera- and inertial-based odometry algorithms. Its usability and the marked improvement of robustness are validated through multiple experiments on public datasets. For instance, we achieve state-of-the-art accuracy on KITTI dataset with the estimated vector error of 0.39°.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) are highly prevalent in primary care. Coping is an important psychological factor that influences patients' ability to adapt physically and mentally to MCCs. Testing a reliable and valid psychometric inventory is necessary to identify coping strategies before developing coping-oriented interventions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Brief COPE-CN) inventory in patients with MCCs. METHOD: This study adopted a cross-sectional design. A convenience sample of 290 Chinese patients with MCCs was recruited from a tertiary hospital in East China. The Brief COPE-CN, sociodemographic characteristics and clinical data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire from November 2017 to May 2018. Factor analysis and reliability analysis were performed. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 58.5 years (range from 23 to 95 years), and approximately half of the participants were female (49.3%). Most participants had two chronic conditions (82.1%) and reported having had MCCs for more than 2 years. The explanatory factor analysis (EFA) identified five factors in the Brief COPE-CN that explained 58.4% of the total variance. The Cronbach's α coefficients ranged from .65 to .85 for the five subscales. CONCLUSIONS: The psychometric properties of the Brief COPE-CN were acceptable for use with Chinese patients with MCCs. With further evaluation, this instrument may help health-care professionals understand patients' coping and develop coping-based interventions to promote coping in this population.

ABSTRACT

Ageing population is a tough task worldwide, and the aggravating trend of ageing population in China brings enormous pressure to healthcare system. Chinese acupuncture has shown definite anti-ageing effect as arthralgia relief, movement improvement, energy increase and immunity enhancement; however, the mechanisms underlying are far away from illumination. Increasing literature has highlighted the role of alterations in mitochondrial function as a potential central regulator in ageing biology; mitophagy plays a critical role in mitochondrial quality control. In the present study, we demonstrated that acupoint catgut embedding treatment ameliorated ageing-related alterations in appearance, muscle function and spatial memory in rats, reduced degenerated cells in hippocampus, and maintained relatively normal structures in the hippocampus tissue and neurons. These changes were proved to be associated with the regulation of mitochondrial function and autophagic activity. Furthermore, we investigated part of the molecular mechanisms and demonstrated that the PINK1 other than PINK1-Parkin signalling pathway involved in the effects of acupoint catgut embedding, and the imbalancement between mitochondrial fusion and fission and stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis may aggravate or compensate for impaired mitochondria. The factors act downstream PINK, and the interaction between them for mitochondrial homeostasis in this process remains to be identified.

ABSTRACT

KEYMESSAGE: Two hub genes GRMZM2G075104 and GRMZM2G333183 involved in salt tolerance were identified by GWAS and WGCNA. Furthermore, they were verified to affect salt tolerance by candidate gene association analysis. Salt stress influences maize growth and development. To decode the genetic basis and hub genes controlling salt tolerance is a meaningful exploration for cultivating salt-tolerant maize varieties. Herein, we used an association panel consisting of 305 lines to identify the genetic loci responsible for Na+- and K+-related traits in maize seedlings. Under the salt stress, seven significant single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified using a genome-wide association study, and 120 genes were obtained by scanning the linkage disequilibrium regions of these loci. According to the transcriptome data of the above 120 genes under salinity treatment, we conducted a weighted gene co-expression network analysis. Combined the gene annotations, two SNaC/SKC (shoot Na+ content/shoot K+ content)-associated genes GRMZM2G075104 and GRMZM2G333183 were finally identified as the hub genes involved in salt tolerance. Subsequently, these two genes were verified to affect salt tolerance of maize seedlings by candidate gene association analysis. Haplotypes TTGTCCG-CT and CTT were determined as favorable/salt-tolerance haplotypes for GRMZM2G075104 and GRMZM2G333183, respectively. These findings provide novel insights into genetic architectures underlying maize salt tolerance and contribute to the cultivation of salt-tolerant varieties in maize.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and summarize the available literature regarding the association between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and sexual dysfunction (SD) in both sexes. METHODS: We retrieved relevant studies from the following databases: PubMed, Embase,Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently reviewed the studies in our sample, assessed their validity, and extracted relevant data. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to distinguish sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Our search resulted in a sample of eight eligible studies, which involved 758 patients in the SLE group and 1724 individuals in the control group. The pooled RR for the increased risk for SD compared to those in the control group was 1.80 (95%CI 1.12-2.87). Subgroup analysis by sex revealed that males (pooled RR = 2.98, 95%CI 2.41-3.68) had a higher risk of SD compared to females (pooled RR = 1.56, 95%CI 0.99-2.48). Females with SLE had significantly lower values in FSFI compared to the healthy individuals (WMD=-0.224, 95%CI -0.441 to -0.078). Age of participants and the quality of studies might influence the results. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis suggests that SLE is significantly associated with an increased risk of sexual dysfunction. It is of great urgency to implement for active interventions that aimed to treat or prevent SD among SLE patients.

ABSTRACT

The surface structure significantly impacts the physicochemical properties of semiconductors. Constructing heterojunction is a universal approach to tune surface structure, which can effectively accelerate the charge transfer at the interface. Here, BiOCl nanosheets which occupy high ratio of surface atoms to entire atoms were used as a model photocatalyst, and a strategy was proposed to tune its surface structure by sequential introduction of oxygen vacancies, PO43- and Ag+ on surface of BiOCl nanosheets. In order to inhibit the overgrowth of heterogeneous component, the excess PO43- was timely removed by centrifugation before adding Ag+. As a result, the as-obtained optimal sample which was confirmed to be a composite composed of BiOCl, BiPO4 and AgCl showed superior photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation with the rate of 38 times higher than that of pristine BiOCl, which was mainly attributed to the quick migration of photongenerated carrier. The active species h+ and •O2- played a vital role in this degradation process. Our strategy not only greatly saved investment of noble metal Ag, but also provide superior stability. On the basis of experimental results and density functional theory calculation, the visible-light driven catalytic mechanism was revealed.
