ABSTRACT

Glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) have been implicated in the self-renewal and treatment resistance of glioblastoma (GBM). Our previous study found that 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one has the potential to inhibit GBM cell proliferation. This current study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the effects of 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one in GBM development. The effect of 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one on GSC formation and differentiation was explored in human GBM cell lines U251 and U87. Subsequently, 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one binding to tetraspanin 1 (TSPAN1) / transmembrane 4 L six family member 1 (TM4SF1) was analyzed by molecular simulation docking. Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and immunofluorescence (IF) were used to assess the interactions between TSPAN1 and TM4SF1 in GSCs. Cell proliferation was detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and colony formation assay. To evaluate cell migration, invasion and apoptosis, we employed wound healing assay, transwell and flow cytometry, respectively. Furthermore, subcutaneous xenograft tumor models in nude mice were constructed to evaluate the impact of 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one on GSCs in vivo by examining tumor growth and histological characteristics. 4,5-Dimethoxycanthin-6-one inhibited GSC formation and promoted stem cell differentiation in a concentration-dependent manner. Molecular docking models of 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one with TM4SF1 and TSPAN1 were constructed. Then, the interaction between TSPAN1 and TM4SF1 in GSC was clarified. Moreover, 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one significantly inhibited the expressions of TM4SF1 and TSPAN1 in vitro and in vivo. Overexpression of TSPAN1 partially reversed the inhibitory effects of 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one on GSC formation, proliferation, migration and invasion. 4,5-Dimethoxycanthin-6-one inhibited GBM progression by inhibiting TSPAN1/TM4SF1 axis. 4,5-Dimethoxycanthin-6-one might be a novel and effective drug for the treatment of GBM.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We investigated the synergistic effect of stress and habitual salt preference (SP) on blood pressure (BP) in the hospitalized Omicron-infected patients. METHODS: From 15,185 hospitalized Omicron-infected patients who reported having high BP or hypertension, we recruited 662 patients. All patients completed an electronic questionnaire on diet and stress, and were required to complete morning BP monitoring at least three times. RESULTS: The hypertensive group (n = 309) had higher habitual SP (P = 0.015) and COVID-19 related stress (P < 0.001), and had longer hospital stays (7.4 ± 1.5 days vs. 7.2 ± 0.5 days, P = 0.019) compared with controls (n = 353). After adjusting for a wide range of covariates including Omicron epidemic-related stress, habitual SP was found to increase both systolic (4.9 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.3-7.4] mmHg, P < 0.001) and diastolic (2.1 [95%CI, 0.6-3.6] mmHg, P = 0.006) BP in hypertensive patients, and increase diastolic BP (2.0 [95%CI, 0.2-3.7] mmHg, P = 0.026) in the control group. 31 (8.8%) patients without a history of hypertension were discovered to have elevated BP during hospitalization, and stress was shown to be different in those patients (P < 0.001). In contrast, habitual SP was more common in hypertensive patients with uncontrolled BP, compared with patients with controlled BP (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Habitual SP and psychosocial stress were associated with higher BP in Omicron-infected patients both with and without hypertension. Nonpharmaceutical intervention including dietary guidance and psychiatric therapy are crucial for BP control during the long COVID-19 period.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to assess the vortex characteristics of left ventricle (LV) in fetuses with coarctation of the aorta (CoA) using high-frame rate ultrasound with blood speckle-tracking (BST) and explore its relationships with cardiac function and morphology parameters. METHODS: Thirty fetuses with CoA and 30 gestational-age matched normal fetuses were included in this cross-sectional study. The area, length, width, and position of the vortex in the LV were recorded and quantitatively analyzed by BST echocardiography. The associations of vortex properties with ventricular function and morphology were also determined. RESULTS: Based on BST imaging, the LV vortex can be observed in 93% of the fetuses. The fetuses with CoA exhibited significantly larger and wider vortex than the controls (P < .05). Linear regression analysis indicated that vortex area was positively related to sphericity index of LV as well as isovolumic relaxation time (r = .52, P = .003 and r = .42, P = .021). There was a negative correlation between vortex area and mitral valve size (r = -.443, P = .014). No significant association was found between vortex area and myocardial performance index and aortic isthmus size. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to quantitatively evaluate the left ventricular vortex in fetuses by BST. The fetuses with CoA exhibited greater vortex area and width, and the altered vortex property is associated with geometry of LV. This will facilitate our comprehension of the unique flow patterns and early cardiac remodeling in fetuses with CoA.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the vascular impedance of the pulmonary arteries in fetuses with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) by Doppler echocardiography. METHODS: A total of 42 fetuses with TOF (TOF group) and 84 gestational age-matched normal fetuses (control group) were prospectively collected from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from August 2022 to January 2023. The severity of TOF was classified into mild TOF (z score ≥-2), moderate TOF (-4 < z score < -2), or severe TOF (z score ≤-4) according to the z score value of the pulmonary annulus diameter. The pulsatility index (PI) of the main pulmonary artery (MPA), distal left pulmonary artery (DLPA), and distal right pulmonary artery (DRPA) were measured by pulsed-wave Doppler. The differences in clinical data and echocardiographic parameters between TOF group, control group, and TOF subgroups were compared. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, MPA-PI increased significantly, whereas DLPA-PI and DRPA-PI decreased in TOF group (all P < .001). There were no significant differences in MPA-PI and DRPA-PI among mild TOF, moderate TOF, and severe TOF (all P > .05). However, DLPA-PI decreased significantly in severe TOF compared with mild TOF (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Fetuses with TOF presented increased vascular impedance in the pulmonary trunk and decreased impedance in distal pulmonary artery branches. Further large and follow-up studies are needed to demonstrate the associations between those changed vascular impedances and the development of PA in patients with TOF.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Altered levels of inflammatory markers secondary to severe trauma present a major problem to physicians and are prone to interfering with the clinical identification of sepsis events. This study aimed to establish the profiles of cytokines in trauma patients to characterize the nature of immune responses to sepsis, which might enable early prediction and individualized treatments to be developed for targeted intervention. METHODS: A 15-plex human cytokine magnetic bead assay system was used to measure analytes in citrated plasma samples. Analysis of the kinetics of these cytokines was performed in 40 patients with severe blunt trauma admitted to our trauma center between March 2016 and February 2017, with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) greater than 20 with regard to sepsis (Sepsis-3) over a 14-d time course. RESULTS: In total, the levels of six cytokines were altered in trauma patients across the 1-, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 14-d time points. Additionally, IL-6, IL-10, IL-15, macrophage derived chemokine (MDC), GRO, sCD40 L, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 levels could be used to provide a significant discrimination between sepsis and nonsepsis patients at day 3 and afterward, with an area under the curve (AUC) of up to 0.90 through a combined analysis of the eight biomarkers (P < 0.001). Event-related analysis demonstrated 1.5- to 4-fold serum level changes for these cytokines within 72 h before clinically apparent sepsis. CONCLUSIONS: Cytokine profiles demonstrate a high discriminatory ability enabling the timely identification of evolving sepsis in trauma patients. These abrupt changes enable sepsis to be detected up to 72 h before clinically overt deterioration. Defining cytokine release patterns that distinguish sepsis risk from trauma patients might enable physicians to initiate timely treatment and reduce mortality. ABSTRACT

Turbulence is considered to be the result of coupled time-averaged and pulsating velocities, making it difficult to distinguish the respective effects, and the quantitative effect of turbulent pulsation alone on mass transfer within biofilms has not been discussed in the literature. In this study, we constructed a special oscillating grid biofilm reactor combining Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to achieve nearly isotropic turbulence in a designed ambient without time-averaged velocity and shear stress. Subsequently, velocity and contaminant concentration distributions were obtained by solving a mass transfer model with a k-ε turbulence model, combined with measurements of biofilm structure parameters. The results showed that the increase in turbulent pulsation intensity led to a significant stratification of the percolation velocity gradient in biofilms, which enhanced convective mass transfer. The changes of biofilm density and porosity under turbulent pulsation were more strongly correlated with convective mass transfer. When the turbulent intensity (q) increased to 2.50 cm s-1, the removal rate reached the highest value of 96.93%, accelerating the migration of contaminant concentration and the diffusive mass transfer effect was obvious. In addition, the trend of biofilm thickness under turbulent pulsation was consistent with the change of contaminant concentration distribution, and the correlation between them was greater. In summary, at q of 2.50 cm s-1, there was a positive effect on both convection and diffusion mechanisms in biofilms, and the contaminant removal rate and biofilm thickness reached the maximum, which was the recommended turbulent pulsation conditions.

BACKGROUND: Giant hepatic hemangiomas are rare and can cause serious complications that contribute to a high risk of perinatal mortality. The purpose of this article is to review the prenatal imaging features, treatment, pathology, and prognosis of an atypical fetal giant hepatic hemangioma and to discuss the differential diagnosis of fetal hepatic masses. CASE PRESENTATION: A gravida 9, para 0 woman at 32 gestational weeks came to our institution for prenatal ultrasound diagnosis. A complex, heterogeneous hepatic mass measuring 5.2 × 4.1 × 3.7 cm was discovered in the fetus using conventional two-dimensional ultrasound. The mass was solid and had both a high peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the feeding artery and intratumoral venous flow. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a clear, hypointense T1-W and hyperintense T2-W solid hepatic mass. Prenatal diagnosis was very difficult due to the overlap of benign and malignant imaging features on prenatal ultrasound and MRI. Even postnatally, neither contrast-enhanced MRI nor contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) was useful in accurately diagnosing this hepatic mass. Due to persistently elevated Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a laparotomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the mass showed atypical features such as hepatic sinus dilation, hyperemia, and hepatic chordal hyperplasia. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with a giant hemangioma, and the prognosis was satisfactory. CONCLUSIONS: When a hepatic vascular mass is found in a third trimester fetus a hemangioma should be considered as a possible diagnosis. However, prenatal diagnosis of fetal hepatic hemangiomas can be challenging due to atypical histopathological findings. Imaging and histopathological assays can provide useful information for the diagnosis and treatment of fetal hepatic masses.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a mesenchymal tumor with distinct histologic and immunologic features. PEComas that originate in the bladder are extremely rare clinically, with only 35 cases reported in the English literature thus far. Here, we report a case of bladder PEComa resection by transurethral en bloc resection of bladder tumor (ERBT). CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female with a history of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes with associated complications of frequent urinary tract infections presented to our hospital for a routine physical examination. Outpatient ultrasound examination revealed a strong echogenic mass of approximately 1.5 × 1.3 × 1.3 cm in size on the posterior wall of the bladder. The enhanced computed tomography and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging after admission both suggested a well-defined isolated nodular mass on the posterior wall of the bladder with significant enhancement on the enhanced scan. The tumor was successfully and completely resected by ERBT. Postoperative pathological examination and immunohistochemical results confirmed the mass was a bladder PEComa. No tumor recurrence was observed in the six-month postoperative follow-up. CONCLUSION: Bladder PEComa is an extremely rare mesenchymal tumor of the urinary system. When imaging and cystoscopy reveal a nodular mass with an abundant blood supply in the bladder, PEComa should be included in the differential diagnosis of bladder tumors. Surgical resection is currently the primary option for the treatment of bladder PEComa. For a solitary, pedunculated, narrow-based, small-sized bladder PEComa, resection of the tumor by ERBT was a safe and feasible approach in our patient and may be considered for similar cases in the future.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH) is a life-threatening disease and lacks effective treatments. Previous studies have confirmed that metabolic profiles altered after ischemic stroke, but how brain metabolism changes after HICH was unclear. This study aimed to explore the metabolic profiles after HICH and the therapeutic effects of soyasaponin I on HICH. METHODS: HICH model was established first. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to estimate the pathological changes after HICH. Western blot and Evans blue extravasation assay were applied to determine the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Next, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-untargeted metabolomics was utilized to analyze the metabolic profiles of brain tissues after HICH. Finally, soyasaponin I was administered to HICH rats, and the severity of HICH and activation of the RAAS were further assessed. RESULTS: We successfully constructed HICH model. HICH significantly impaired BBB integrity and activated RAAS. HICH increased PE(14:0/24:1(15Z)), arachidonoyl serinol, PS(18:0/22:6(4Z, 7Z, 10Z, 13Z, 16Z, and 19Z)), PS(20:1(11Z)/20:5(5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z, and 17Z)), glucose 1-phosphate, etc., in the brain, whereas decreased creatine, tripamide, D-N-(carboxyacetyl)alanine, N-acetylaspartate, N-acetylaspartylglutamic acid, and so on in the hemorrhagic hemisphere. Cerebral soyasaponin I was found to be downregulated after HICH and supplementation of soyasaponin I inactivated the RAAS and alleviated HICH. CONCLUSION: The metabolic profiles of the brains changed after HICH. Soyasaponin I alleviated HICH via inhibiting the RAAS and may serve as an effective drug for the treatment of HICH in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the genetic basis of muscle development in goats. The transcriptome dataset for differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of goat muscle at different developmental stages were obtained using RNA-Seq. A total of 447,806,481 and 587,559,465 clean reads in the longissimus dorsi muscle of Dazu black goats between 75d embryonic stage and 1d after birth were generated through Illumina paired-end sequencing, and their mapping rates were 89.82 and 90.99%, respectively. Moreover, 4517 DEGs and 648 DELs were identified, and 4784 lncRNA-mRNA targeting relationships were predicted. Gene function annotation results showed that 4101 DEGs were significantly enriched to 1098 GO terms, and 2014 DEGs were significantly enriched to 40 KEGG pathways, including many GO terms and pathways related to muscle development, such as cell differentiation and Wnt signaling pathway. Then, 10 DELs and 20 DEGs were randomly selected for RT-qPCR verification, and the agreement rate between the verification and RNA-Seq results was 90%, indicating the high reliability of the RNA-Seq data analysis. In conclusion, this study obtained several mRNAs and lncRNAs related to the muscle development of Dazu black goats and identified several targeted regulatory pairs of lncRNA-mRNA. This study may serve as a reference to understand the genetic basis and molecular mechanism of muscle development in goats.

ABSTRACT

Surface roughness is a key indicator of the quality of mechanical products, which can precisely portray the fatigue strength, wear resistance, surface hardness and other properties of the products. The convergence of current machine-learning-based surface roughness prediction methods to local minima may lead to poor model generalization or results that violate existing physical laws. Therefore, this paper combined physical knowledge with deep learning to propose a physics-informed deep learning method (PIDL) for milling surface roughness predictions under the constraints of physical laws. This method introduced physical knowledge in the input phase and training phase of deep learning. Data augmentation was performed on the limited experimental data by constructing surface roughness mechanism models with tolerable accuracy prior to training. In the training, a physically guided loss function was constructed to guide the training process of the model with physical knowledge. Considering the excellent feature extraction capability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and gated recurrent units (GRUs) in the spatial and temporal scales, a CNN-GRU model was adopted as the main model for milling surface roughness predictions. Meanwhile, a bi-directional gated recurrent unit and a multi-headed self-attentive mechanism were introduced to enhance data correlation. In this paper, surface roughness prediction experiments were conducted on the open-source datasets S45C and GAMHE 5.0. In comparison with the results of state-of-the-art methods, the proposed model has the highest prediction accuracy on both datasets, and the mean absolute percentage error on the test set was reduced by 3.029% on average compared to the best comparison method. Physical-model-guided machine learning prediction methods may be a future pathway for machine learning evolution.

Background:Patients with 17q23.1-q23.2 microdeletion syndrome have common features, including mild to moderate developmental delay; microcephaly; heart defects; and hand, foot, and limb abnormalities. Case Report: We describe a fetus with 2.14 Mb microdeletion involving 17q23.1-q23.2 and presenting with primary bilateral lung hypoplasia in utero. The fetal biometry measurement and estimated fetal weight had a two-week delay but they were still above the 10th percentile. There were no other structural abnormalities. Primary lung hypoplasia is infrequent and has a poor prognosis, especially when bilateral. There are no reports of fetal survival with primary bilateral lung hypoplasia. Conclusion: This is the first report of the coexistence of primary lung hypoplasia and chromosome 17q23.1-q23.2 microdeletion detected during fetal life.

AIMS: In recent years, the incidence rate of hypertensive intracerebral haemorrhage (HICH) has been increasing, accompanied by high mortality and morbidity, which has brought a heavy burden to the social economy. However, the pathogenesis of HICH is still unclear. This study intends to explore the mechanism of gut microbiota metabolism and inflammation in the process of HICH to provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of HICH. METHODS AND RESULTS: HE staining showed that the brain tissues of model group had obvious oedema injury, which indicated that the HICH model was successfully constructed. ELISA analysis showed that IL-1ß and TNF-α levels in blood and brain tissues were significantly increased, and IL-10 level was significantly decreased in blood. IHC analysis showed that microglia and macrophages were activated in the model group. 16S rRNA sequence showed that the diversity of gut microbiota in HICH patients decreased. Also, the microbiota belonging to Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia changed significantly. LC-MS/MS analysis showed that the metabolic phenotype of HICH patients changed. Also, the 3,7-dimethyluric acid- and 7-methylxanthine-related metabolic pathways of caffeine metabolism pathways were downregulated in patients with HICH. Bacteroides was negatively correlated with the IL-1ß and TNF-α levels. Blautia was negatively correlated with the IL-1ß and TNF-α levels, and positively correlated with the IL-10 level. Akkermansia was negatively correlated with the 3,7-dimethyluric acid and 7-methylxanthine. CONCLUSION: Our study suggested that HICH was accompanied by the increased inflammation marker levels in peripheral blood and brain, decreased gut microbiota diversity, altered gut metabolic phenotype and downregulation of caffeine metabolism pathway. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our study reported that HICH accompanied by the increased inflammation, decreased gut microbiota diversity and altered gut metabolic phenotype. Due to the number of patients, this work was a pilot study.

ABSTRACT

To establish the cross-sectional reference values of cerebral ventricular size for the Chinese newborns by the most correlated explanatory variables. The anterior horn width (AHW), thalamo-occipital distance (TOD), and ventricular index (VI) were collected prospectively from 1- to 7-day neonates without potential neurological problems. All neonates were delivered or treated at the Hunan Provincial Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital or Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University between February and August 2021. The most correlated explanatory variables were identified with the max-min normalization and multiple regression. The reference values were then established based on the above variables. Additionally, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were applied to evaluate the reliability of the overall data collection process. This prospective study consisted of 1848 neonates. The AHW was most highly correlated with GA; the TOD and VI were most strongly correlated with birth weight. All the foregoing correlations were positive ones. Heteroscedasticity and influential points existed in both TOD and VI. The ICCAHW was the largest to a specific rater or between raters, the ICCTOD the second largest, and the ICCVI the smallest. CONCLUSIONS: We recommend using the GA-based AHW reference values and birth weight-based TOD and VI ones. We also present a comparison of GA-based upper limits from all available reference intervals. Moreover, we determine that measurement errors are the primary cause of influential points and heteroscedasticity in TOD and VI studies and infer that the studies of TOD and VI are vulnerable to them. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Reference values of infantile cerebral ventricles are vital in diagnosing and treating cerebral ventricular dilatation. • Precursors established gestational age-based reference values subjectively. WHAT IS NEW: • We set cross-sectional reference values based on the most correlated variables for Chinese neonates and compared all available gestational age-based upper limits. • Influential points and heteroscedasticity mainly caused by measurement errors are common in TOD and VI studies.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Left pulmonary artery sling (LPAS) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly which can be isolated or associated with other malformations. Patients with LPAS usually have symptoms of airway obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of LPAS with double-outlet right ventricle diagnosed by fetal echocardiography at 33 weeks' gestation. Postnatal computed tomography echocardiography confirmed the diagnosis. Additional bronchial bridge and left main bronchial stenosis found by computed tomography led to a diagnosis of type II LPAS. CONCLUSION: It is crucial to trace pulmonary artery branches in the prenatal diagnosis. Prenatal diagnosis of LPAS will facilitate postnatal care and timely treatment.

ABSTRACT

The clinical data and follow-up results of 27 paraspinoid aneurysms treated by Willis covered stent (WCS) in Department of Neurosurgery, Army Medical University from May 2014 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 17 cases (63.0%) were treated with WCS alone, and 10 cases (37.0%) were assisted with coiling embolization. During the follow-up, postoperative internal leakage occurred in 2 patients(7%), of which 1(type Ⅰ) wasself-healing and the other 1 (type Ⅲ) was cured by WCS implantation again. The remaining patients had no aneurysm recurrence, unobstructed parent artery, stent displacement and internal stenosis. 92.6% (25/27) of the improved mRS scores were good. WCS is a safe and effective method for the treatment of parabedinal aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine fetal foramen ovale blood flow utilizing pulsed Doppler combined with spatiotemporal image correlation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 440 normal fetuses between 20 and 40 weeks of gestation. In order to calculate foramen ovale blood flow, the foramen ovale flow velocity-time integral was obtained by pulsed Doppler ultrasonography, and the foramen ovale area was measured by using spatiotemporal image correlation rendering mode. Foramen ovale blood flow was calculated as the product of the foramen ovale area and the velocity-time integral. RESULTS: Gestational age-specific reference ranges are given for the absolute blood flow (ml/min) of foramen ovale, showing an exponential increase from 20 to 30 weeks of gestation, and a flat growth trend during the last trimester, while the weight-indexed flow (ml/min/kg) of foramen ovale decreased significantly. The median weight-indexed foramen ovale blood flow was 320.82 ml/min/kg (mean 319.1 ml/min/kg; SD 106.33 ml/min/kg). CONCLUSIONS: The reference range for fetal foramen ovale blood flow was determined from 20 to 40 weeks of gestation. The present data show that the volume of foramen ovale blood flow might have a limited capacity to increase during the last trimester.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcome and related risk factors of fetal lateral ventriculomegaly (VM). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 255 cases diagnosed as fetal VM. Prenatal imaging examination was carried out. The pregnancy outcomes were investigated through follow-up. According to the prognosis of children, they were divided into case group and control group. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the factors influencing the prognosis of hydrocephalus. RESULTS: After excluding the cases with either loss of follow-up or incomplete information, 102 cases were followed up. Twelve cases with poor prognosis were set as the case group. According to the maternal age, gestational age, gender of children, and follow-up time, 3 cases were selected from the other 90 cases for each child in the case group, respectively, and selected as the control group. Paired comparative analysis was performed on 48 cases. Using prognosis as a dependent variable, multivariate logistic regression analysis of the statistically significant factors indicated that the change speed of width ratio (CSWR) and maximum lateral ventricular width (MW) were associated with fetal prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that CSWR and MW may have the value of predicting fetal prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Maternal oxygenation (MO) is widely applied in obstetrics. Scholars have conducted numerous studies on maternal hyperoxygenation and have reported many theoretical and applied achievements and a number of different points of view. The main purpose of this article is to discuss the effect of maternal oxygenation on fetal circulation during normal and complicated pregnancies and to ascertain its potential side effects and research gaps in this field. In complicated pregnancies, the fetus may benefit from oxygen therapy. However, large randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies are necessary to support the widespread application of maternal oxygenation in this context.

ABSTRACT

The flow velocity plays an important role in the growth and characteristics of biofilm in the bioreactor as well as its treatment efficiency, which has been a hot research topic. In a sewage treatment bioreactor, the type of flow is usually turbulence. According to the methods of Reynolds decomposition, the flow velocity of turbulence consists of the time-mean velocity and fluctuation velocity, which usually exist simultaneously in real flow. However, the current research on the influence of turbulence flow velocity mainly focuses on the time-mean velocity, while the fluctuation velocity has not been reported because of very difficult to control. To this end, in this paper, a laboratory oscillating-grid turbulence (OGT) bioreactor with zero time-mean velocity and only fluctuation velocity was designed. In this bioreactor, the fluctuation velocity could be easily manipulated by varying the operational parameters of the grid. Based on the numerical simulation of Gas-liquid two-phase flow, the distributions of fluctuation velocity and corresponding turbulence fluctuation intensity, gas holdup, and Reynolds stress were obtained. After that, the effects of the turbulent fluctuation intensity on the biofilm thickness, density, and composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were studied experimentally. The results showed that turbulent fluctuation had a significant effect on the physical and chemical properties of biofilms, and the fluctuation velocity promoted the increase in the biofilm density and the content of protein and carbohydrates in EPS. This study was intended to provide theoretical support for the design and operation optimization of bioreactors.
