ABSTRACT

The effect of pathogens on host diversity has attracted much attention in recent years, yet how the influence of pathogens on individual plants scales up to affect community-level host diversity remains unclear. Here, we assessed the effects of foliar fungal pathogens on plant growth and species richness using allometric growth theory in population-level and community-level foliar fungal pathogen exclusion experiments. We calculated growth scaling exponents of 24 species to reveal the intraspecific size-dependent effects of foliar fungal pathogens on plant growth. We also calculated the intercepts to infer the growth rates of relatively larger conspecific individuals. We found that foliar fungal pathogens inhibited the growth of small conspecific individuals more than large individuals, resulting in a positive allometric growth. After foliar fungal pathogen exclusion, species-specific growth scaling exponents and intercepts decreased, but became positively related to species' relative abundance, providing a growth advantage for individuals of abundant species with a higher growth scaling exponent and intercept compared with rare species, and thus reduced species diversity. By adopting allometric growth theory, we elucidate the size-dependent mechanisms through which pathogens regulate species diversity and provide a powerful framework to incorporate antagonistic size-dependent processes in understanding species coexistence.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: We aimed to examine the longitudinal associations of birth weight with plasma metabolites in adulthood, and further quantify the proportions of the links between birth weight and incident adult type 2 diabetes (T2D) that were mediated by plasma metabolites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 62,033 participants with complete nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomics and birth weight data from the UK Biobank were included in this study. Linear regression was used to assess the associations between birth weight and metabolites. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios for T2D associated with metabolites. We further performed mediation analyses to estimate the extent to which metabolites might mediate the association between birth weight and T2D risk. RESULTS: Low birth weight was associated with the adverse metabolic responses across multiple metabolic pathways, including lipoprotein subclasses, amino acids, fatty acids (FA), and inflammation. Metabolites associated with higher birth weight tended to be associated with a lower risk of T2D (Pearson correlation coefficient: -0.85). A total of 62 metabolites showed statistically significant mediation effects in the protective association of higher birth weight and T2D risk, including large-sized very low-density lipoprotein particles and triglyceride concentrations as well as saturated, and monounsaturated FA and glycoprotein acetyls. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a range of metabolites that reflect the adult metabolic response to birth weight, some of which might lie on the pathway between birth weight and adult T2D risk.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and 1-year clinical follow-up performance of dental implant placement with an autonomous dental implant robot (ADIR) system in full-arch implant surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with edentulous arches or final dentition received 102 implants using the ADIR system. Global platform deviation, global apex deviation, and global angular deviation between the planned and actual implants were calculated after surgery. Data were statistically analyzed for factors including jaws, implant positions, patient sequences, implant systems, and implant length. Surgery duration was recorded. Patients were followed for 3 months and 1 year after surgery. Periodontal parameters, buccal bone thickness (BBT), and facial vertical bone wall peak (IP-FC) were recorded. RESULTS: Among the 102 implants, the mean (SD) global platform deviation, global apex deviation, and global angular deviation were 0.53 (0.19) mm, 0.58 (0.17) mm, and 1.83 (0.82)°, respectively. The deviation differences between the mandible and maxilla did not show statistical significance (p > .05). No statistically significant differences were found for the jaws, implant positions, patient sequences, implant systems, and implant length to the deviations (p > .05). The periodontal parameters, the BBT, and IP-FC remained stable during 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: The ADIR system showed excellent positional accuracy. The 1-year follow-up after full-arch implant surgery indicated that the ADIR system could achieve promising clinical performance. Additional clinical evidence is requisite to furnish guidelines for the implementation of the ADIR system in full-arch implant surgery.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aims at examining the correlation of intraosseous temperature change with drilling impulse data during osteotomy and establishing real-time temperature prediction models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A combination of in vitro bovine rib model and Autonomous Dental Implant Robotic System (ADIR) was set up, in which intraosseous temperature and drilling impulse data were measured using an infrared camera and a six-axis force/torque sensor respectively. A total of 800 drills with different parameters (e.g., drill diameter, drill wear, drilling speed, and thickness of cortical bone) were experimented, along with an independent test set of 200 drills. Pearson correlation analysis was done for linear relationship. Four machining learning (ML) algorithms (e.g., support vector regression [SVR], ridge regression [RR], extreme gradient boosting [XGboost], and artificial neural network [ANN]) were run for building prediction models. RESULTS: By incorporating different parameters, it was found that lower drilling speed, smaller drill diameter, more severe wear, and thicker cortical bone were associated with higher intraosseous temperature changes and longer time exposure and were accompanied with alterations in drilling impulse data. Pearson correlation analysis further identified highly linear correlation between drilling impulse data and thermal changes. Finally, four ML prediction models were established, among which XGboost model showed the best performance with the minimum error measurements in test set. CONCLUSION: The proof-of-concept study highlighted close correlation of drilling impulse data with intraosseous temperature change during osteotomy. The ML prediction models may inspire future improvement on prevention of thermal bone injury and intelligent design of robot-assisted implant surgery.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: High low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol has been associated with an increased risk of coronary artery diseases (CAD) including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, whether lipids lowering drug treatment is causally associated with decreased risk of AMI remains largely unknown. We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to evaluate the influence of genetic variation affecting the function of lipid-lowering drug targets on AMI. METHODS: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with lipids as instruments were extracted from the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium (GLGC). The genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for AMI were obtained from UK Biobank. Two sample MR analysis was used to study the associations between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG) with AMI (n = 3,927). Genetic variants associated with LDL cholesterol at or near drug target gene were used to mimic drug effects on the AMI events in drug target MR. RESULTS: Genetically predicted higher LDL-C (per one SD increase in LDL-C of 38.67 mg/dL, OR 1.006, 95% CI 1.004-1.007) and TG (per one SD increase in TG of 90.72 mg/dL, 1.004, 1.002-1.006) was associated with increased risk of AMI, but decreased risk for higher HDL-C (per one SD increase in HDL-C of 15.51 mg/dL, 0.997, 0.995-0.999) in univariable MR. Association remained significant for LDL-C, but attenuated toward the null for HDL-C and TG in multivariable MR. Genetically proxied lower LDL-C with genetic variants at or near the PCSK9 region (drug target of evolocumab) and NPC1L1 (drug target of ezetimibe) were associated with decreased risk of AMI (0.997, 0.994-0.999 and 0.986, 0.975-0.998, respectively), whereas genetic variants at HMGCR region (drug target of statin) showed marginal association with AMI (0.995, 0.990-1.000). After excluding drug target-related SNPs, LDL-C related SNPs outside the drug target region remained a causal effect on AMI (0.994, 0.993-0.996). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that genetically predicted LDL-C may play a predominant role in the development of AMI. The drug MR results imply that ezetimibe and evolocumab may decrease the risk of AMI due to their LDL-C lowering effect, and there are other non-drug related lipid lowering pathways that may be causally linked to AMI.

ABSTRACT

Precise reproduction of the preoperatively designed 3-dimensional (3D) implant position is key to seating a prefabricated restoration and restoring esthetics. Static and dynamic computer-aided implant surgery (CAIS) based on the fusion of 3D imaging files have been used to improve implant accuracy. However, both techniques have shortcomings that can be remedied by a robotic system. This clinical report describes the immediate placement of an implant in the anterior esthetic zone by using an autonomous dental implant robotic system (ADIR).

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this technical report is to demonstrate a fully digital workflow for designing and fabricating metal frameworks and removable partial dentures. After obtaining a digital cast of the dental arch with bilateral distal extension defect, computer-aided design software and 3D printing technology are used for the design and fabrication of the removable partial denture frameworks, denture teeth, and denture bases, instead of the traditional workflow. The assembly of the three components is facilitated through a meticulously structured framework. The technology, which prints metal frameworks, denture bases, and denture teeth through different processes with different materials, achieves full 3D printing technology for making removable partial dentures.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Short-term clinical trials have shown the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) and low-fat diets (LFDs) for weight loss and cardiovascular benefits. We aimed to study the long-term associations among LCDs, LFDs, and mortality among middle-aged and older people. METHODS: This study included 371,159 eligible participants aged 50-71 years. Overall, healthy and unhealthy LCD and LFD scores, as indicators of adherence to each dietary pattern, were calculated based on the energy intake of carbohydrates, fat, and protein and their subtypes. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 23.5 years, 165,698 deaths were recorded. Participants in the highest quintiles of overall LCD scores and unhealthy LCD scores had significantly higher risks of total and cause-specific mortality (hazard ratios [HRs]: 1.12-1.18). Conversely, a healthy LCD was associated with marginally lower total mortality (HR: 0.95; 95% confidence interval: 0.94, 0.97). Moreover, the highest quintile of a healthy LFD was associated with significantly lower total mortality by 18%, cardiovascular mortality by 16%, and cancer mortality by 18%, respectively, versus the lowest. Notably, isocaloric replacement of 3% energy from saturated fat with other macronutrient subtypes was associated with significantly lower total and cause-specific mortality. For low-quality carbohydrates, mortality was significantly reduced after replacement with plant protein and unsaturated fat. CONCLUSIONS: Higher mortality was observed for overall LCD and unhealthy LCD, but slightly lower risks for healthy LCD. Our results support the importance of maintaining a healthy LFD with less saturated fat in preventing all-cause and cause-specific mortality among middle-aged and older people.

ABSTRACT

Developing a self-expanding hemostatic sponge with high blood absorption and rapid shape recovery for noncompressible hemorrhage remains a challenge. In this study, a 3D-printed cuttlefish bone elastomeric sponge (CBES) is fabricated, which combined ordered channels and porous structures, presented tunable mechanical strength, and shape memory potentials. The incorporation of cuttlefish bone powder (CBp) plays key roles in concentrating blood components, promoting aggregation of red blood cells and platelets, and activating platelets, which makes CBES show enhanced hemostatic performance compared with commercial gelatin sponges in vivo. Moreover, CBES promotes more histiocytic infiltration and neovascularization in the early stage of degradation than gelatin sponges, which is conducive to the regeneration and repair of injured tissue. To conclude, CBp loaded 3D-printed elastomeric sponges can promote coagulation, present the potential to guide tissue healing, and broaden the hemostatic application of traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Time spent on screen-based sedentary activities is significantly associated with dementia risk, however, whether the associations vary by family history (FHx) of dementia is currently unknown. We aimed to examine independent associations of two prevalent types of screen-based sedentary activities (television [TV] viewing and computer use) with dementia and assess the modifying effect of FHx. METHODS: We included 415,048 individuals free of dementia from the UK Biobank. Associations of TV viewing, computer use, and FHx with dementia risk were determined using Cox regression models. We estimated both multiplicative- and additive-scale interactions between TV viewing and computer use and FHx. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.6 years, 5,549 participants developed dementia. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we observed that moderate (2-3 h/day; hazard ratio [HR] 1.13, 95% confidence interval 0.03-1.23) and high (>3 h/day; 1.33, 1.21-1.46) TV viewing was associated with a higher dementia risk, compared with low (0-1 h/day) TV viewing. Using restricted cubic spline models, the relationship of TV viewing with dementia was nonlinear (relative to 0 h/day; p for nonlinear = 0.005). We found that >3 h/day of TV viewing was associated with a 42% (1.42, 1.18-1.71) higher dementia risk in participants with FHx while a 30% (1.30, 1.17-1.45) in those without FHx. For computer use, both low (0 h/day; 1.41, 1.33-1.50) and high (>2 h/day; 1.17, 1.05-1.29) computer use were associated with elevated dementia risk, compared with moderate (1-2 h/day) computer use. We observed a J-shaped relationship with dementia (relative to 2 h/day; p for nonlinear <0.001). Compared with 1-2 h/day of computer use, the HRs of dementia were 1.46 (1.29-1.65) and 1.10 (0.90-1.36) for 0 h/day and >2 h/day of computer use in participants with FHx, respectively, while the corresponding HRs were 1.40 (1.30-1.50) and 1.19 (1.06-1.33) in those without FHx. We observed a positive additive interaction (RERI 0.29, 0.06-0.53) between computer use and FHx, while little evidence of interaction between TV viewing and FHx. CONCLUSIONS: The time spent on TV viewing and computer use were independent risk factors for dementia, and the adverse effects of computer use and FHx were additive. Our findings point to new behavioral targets for intervention on preventing an early onset of dementia, especially for those with FHx.

ABSTRACT

The direct alkoxylation of amides has been accomplished via methoxyiminoacyl (MIA)-mediated Pd-catalyzed C-H functionalization. A diverse array of alkylamide substrates is amenable to this protocol, providing γ-C(sp3)-alkoxylation of alkylamide derivatives with good to high efficiency. Two aspects of the research were completed to explore the reaction mechanism. On the one hand, the result of the kinetic isotopic effect experiment and control experiment indicated that reductive elimination is a rate-limiting step. On the other hand, density functional theory calculations demonstrated that a concerted Sn2 reductive elimination mechanism pathway is prior. Finally, the MIA group could be efficiently hydrogenated and protected in a one-pot procedure, which provides a short synthetic route to γ-methoxy amino acid derivatives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Heart failure (HF) is often triggered by hypertension and can benefit from antihypertensive treatment. We aimed to investigate whether pulse pressure (PP) could independently raise the risk of HF beyond systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), as well as explore the potential mechanisms of antihypertensives in HF prevention. METHODS AND RESULTS: We generated genetic proxies for SBP, DBP, PP, and five drug classes based on a massive genome-wide association study. We applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) using summary statistics derived from European individuals and conducted summary data-based MR (SMR) with gene expression data. In univariate analysis, PP showed an obvious association with HF risk (OR, 1.24 per 10 mm Hg increment; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.32), which was largely attenuated in multivariable analysis when adjusted for SBP (0.89; 0.77 to 1.04). A significant decrease in HF risk was obtained with genetically proxied ß-blockers (equivalent to a 10 mm Hg reduction in SBP, 0.71; 0.62 to 0.82) and calcium channel blockers (0.71; 0.65 to 0.78), but not with genetically proxied angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (0.69; 0.40 to 1.19) and thiazide diuretics (0.80; 0.47 to 1.37). Additionally, the enrichment of expression for the KCNH2 gene, a target gene of ß-blockers, in blood vessels and nerves was significantly associated with HF risk. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that PP may not be an independent risk factor for HF. ß-blockers and calcium channel blockers have a protective effect against HF, which at least partly depends on their blood pressure-lowering effect.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sustained release of bioactive BMP2 (bone morphogenetic protein-2) is important for bone regeneration, while the intrinsic short half-life of BMP2 at protein level cannot meet the clinical need. In this study, we aimed to design Bmp2 mRNA-enriched engineered exosomes, which were then loaded into specific hydrogel to achieve sustained release for more efficient and safe bone regeneration. RESULTS: Bmp2 mRNA was enriched into exosomes by selective inhibition of translation in donor cells, in which NoBody (non-annotated P-body dissociating polypeptide, a protein that inhibits mRNA translation) and modified engineered BMP2 plasmids were co-transfected. The derived exosomes were named ExoBMP2+NoBody. In vitro experiments confirmed that ExoBMP2+NoBody had higher abundance of Bmp2 mRNA and thus stronger osteogenic induction capacity. When loaded into GelMA hydrogel via ally-L-glycine modified CP05 linker, the exosomes could be slowly released and thus ensure prolonged effect of BMP2 when endocytosed by the recipient cells. In the in vivo calvarial defect model, ExoBMP2+NoBody-loaded GelMA displayed great capacity in promoting bone regeneration. CONCLUSIONS: Together, the proposed ExoBMP2+NoBody-loaded GelMA can provide an efficient and innovative strategy for bone regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Bacterial chromosome replication is mainly catalyzed by DNA polymerase III, whose beta subunits enable rapid processive DNA replication. Enabled by the clamp-loading complex, the two beta subunits form a ring-like clamp around DNA and keep the polymerase sliding along. Given the essential role of ß-clamp, its inhibitors have been explored for antibacterial purposes. Similarly, ß-clamp is an ideal target for bacteriophages to shut off host DNA synthesis during host takeover. The Gp168 protein of phage Twort is such an example, which binds to the ß-clamp of Staphylococcus aureus and prevents it from loading onto DNA causing replication arrest. Here, we report a cryo-EM structure of the clamp-Gp168 complex at 3.2-Å resolution. In the structure of the complex, the Gp168 dimer occupies the DNA sliding channel of ß-clamp and blocks its loading onto DNA, which represents a new inhibitory mechanism against ß-clamp function. Interestingly, the key residues responsible for this interaction on the ß-clamp are well conserved among bacteria. We therefore demonstrate that Gp168 is potentially a cross-species ß-clamp inhibitor, as it forms complex with the Bacillus subtilis ß-clamp. Our findings reveal an alternative mechanism for bacteriophages to inhibit ß-clamp and provide a new strategy to combat bacterial drug resistance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with hypertension and compare the discriminative power of the TyG index, lipid, glycemic parameters for hypertension using the China Health Examination Collaborative study (CHEC Study). METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected at Ningbo Mingzhou Hospital and Beijing physical examination center from the CHEC Study during 2014 and 2021. Participants with ≥2 medical check-up times were included. The TyG index is the logarithmized product of fasting triglyceride and glucose. Generalised estimation equation (GEE) model was used to evaluate the association between the TyG index, lipid parameters, glycemic parameters and hypertension. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to explore the predictive ability of TyG index on hypertension at different years of medical check-up. RESULTS: 112,902 participants with an average age of 42.8 years were recruited in the study, 36,839 participants developed hypertension over the 8-year period. GEE model analysis showed that the ORs with 95% CI of hypertension were 3.35 (3.15-3.57), 1.86 (1.76-1.95), 1.67 (1.58-1.78), 1.45 (1.33-1.58), 1.24 (1.19-1.29), 0.92 (0.86-0.99), and 1.90 (1.83-1.97) in the highest versus lowest quintiles of TyG index, TG/HDL-C ratio, TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and FPG in model 2. The area under the ROC curve of the overall years of medical check-up was signifi-cantly higher than a particular year in predicting hypertension (AUC: 0.883, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TyG index is associated with hypertension and shows the superior discriminative ability for hypertension compared with lipid and glycemic parameters.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Observational studies have shown that energy restriction could be beneficial for controlling bodyweight in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We aim to compare the effects of a high-protein diet (HPD), a high-protein and high-dietary fiber diet (HPHFD), and a calorie-restricted diet (CRD) on metabolic health and gut microbiota in overweight/obese PCOS patients. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We will enroll a total of 90 overweight/obese PCOS patients into this eight-week open-label randomised controlled trial. Participants will be randomly assigned to three groups: CRD group (energy coefficient 20 kcal/kg.day, water ≥1500 mL, 0.8-1.2 g/kg protein, carbohydrate energize 55-60%, and fat energize 25-30%), HDP group (energy coefficient 20 kcal/kg.day, water ≥1500 mL, and 1.5-2.0 g/kg protein) and HPHFD group (based on the high protein diet with 15 g more dietary fiber supplement). The primary outcome is body weight, body fat percentage, and lean body mass. The secondary outcomes will include changes in blood lipids, inflammation, glucose tolerance, blood pressure, and gut microbiota compositions. Between-group differences in adiposity measurements at baseline will be compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) or Kruskal-Wallis test when appropriate. Within-group difference after 8-week intervention will be compared using paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed rank test. Between-group differences in adiposity measurements after 8-week diet intervention will be compared using linear mixed model and ANCOVA. The gut microbiota will be analyzed using 16S amplicon sequencing and the sequencing data will be analyzed using the standardized QIIME2 piperline.

ABSTRACT

Ideal implant placement is the basis for long-term implant survival and satisfactory restoration outcomes. Static and dynamic computer-assisted guidance have been used to improve the accuracy of implant placement, but both have shortcomings that robots can overcome. This clinical report describes the use of an autonomous implant robot to complete the placement of 2 adjacent implants with immediate postoperative restoration.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The accuracy of implant placement is a prerequisite for prosthetically driven implant surgery and is necessary to ensure the long-term stability of dental implants. Imprecise implant position may bring difficulties for restoration, damage anatomic structures, affect peri-implant tissues, and lead to ultimate implant failure. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to compare the accuracy of implants placed with an autonomous dental implant robotic (ADIR) system with those placed with static computer assisted implant surgery (sCAIS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-nine participants were enrolled in this retrospective study: 20 participants had received implant surgery with the ADIR system and 19 participants had implants placed with sCAIS. The preoperative plans and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans after implant placement were matched during the study. The coronal, apical, and angular deviations were measured and analyzed. A linear regression model was established to analyze the source of deviation. MANOVA was used to compare differences in the major outcome variables (α=.05). RESULTS: A total of 60 implants were placed in 39 participants (30 in each of the 2 groups). The mean ±standard deviation coronal, apical, and angular deviation of the ADIR system group and sCAIS group were 0.43 ±0.18 mm versus 1.31 ±0.62 mm (P<.001), 0.56 ±0.18 mm versus 1.47 ±0.65 mm (P<.001), and 1.48 ±0.59 degrees versus 2.42 ±1.55 degrees (P=.003), respectively. In addition, there was no significant difference in accuracy in the different implant regions (anterior, premolar, molar, maxilla, mandible) (P>.05). No complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of the implant position using the ADIR system was significantly higher than with sCAIS, suggesting that the ADIR system can achieve minimally invasive and excellent accuracy. Microbial fermentation has been widely used to improve the quality and functional composition of food and edibles; however, the approach has rarely been applied to traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, to understand the effect of microbial fermentation on the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicines, we used Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bacillus subtilis to ferment the traditional Chinese medicine, Cornus officinalis fruit (COF), and determined the levels of active ingredients using HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). According to the results, both B. subtilis and B. bifidum substantially increased the amount of gallic acid in the COF culture broth after fermentation; however, the two species of bacteria had no effect on the loganin content. Moreover, the B. subtilis fermentation reduced the contents of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid in the COF broth, whereas the B. bifidum fermentation did not. This study contributes to a better understanding of the mechanism by which microbial fermentation alters the active ingredient levels of traditional Chinese medicines, and suggests that fermentation may potentially improve their functional ingredients.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive risk factors and air pollution for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been documented separately. However, the combined effects of overall reproductive risk status on COPD and the extent to which this can be impacted by air pollution are unknown. The aim of this study was to construct a reproductive risk score (RRS) and an air pollution score (APS) and assess independent and joint associations between the two with incident COPD risk. METHODS: 78,027 female participants aged 40-69 years without baseline COPD from UK Biobank recruited between 2006 to 2010 were included in this study. RRS was constructed by 17 women's reproductive health-related items, and APS incorporating PM2.5, PM2.5-10, PM10, NO2, and NOx was calculated to assess the joint exposure level. The outcome of the incident COPD was identified through the in-patient hospital register. The associations of RRS and APS with COPD were examined by Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: The risk of COPD reached its highest in the fourth quartile of the RRS (adjusted HR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.76-2.82, P for trend < 0.001). A dose-response manner can also be observed between higher tertile APS with increased COPD risk and the highest risk was found in the third tertile of the APS (adjusted HR: 1.37, 95% CI: 1.19-1.58, P for trend < 0.001). The relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) of 0.030 (95% CI: 0.012-0.048) showed additive interaction between RRS and APS on COPD was significant. In the joint analysis, the combinations of both higher RRS and APS signified higher incident COPD risk. CONCLUSION: High RRS and high APS were jointly associated with increased COPD risks in a dose-response pattern. Using comprehensive indicators to identify women's reproductive risk factors, together with the control of air pollution, is effective for COPD prevention.
