ABSTRACT

The introduction of structural complexity to nanoparticles brings them interesting properties. Regularity breaking has been challenging in the chemical synthesis of nanoparticles. Most reported chemical methods for synthesizing irregular nanoparticles are complicated and laborious, largely hindering the exploration of structural irregularity in nanoscience. In this study, the authors have combined seed-mediated growth and Pt(IV)-induced etching to synthesize two types of unprecedented Au nanoparticles, bitten nanospheres and nanodecahedrons, with size control. Each nanoparticle has an irregular cavity on it. They exhibit distinct single-particle chiroptical responses. Perfect Au nanospheres and nanorods without any cavity do not show optical chirality, which demonstrates that the geometrical structure of the bitten opening plays a decisive role in the generation of chiroptical responses.

ABSTRACT

Gold nanorods (NRs), pseudo-one-dimensional rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), have become one of the burgeoning materials in the recent years due to their anisotropic shape and adjustable plasmonic properties. With the continuous improvement in synthetic methods, a variety of materials have been attached around Au NRs to achieve unexpected or improved plasmonic properties and explore state-of-the-art technologies. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest progress on Au NRs, the most versatile anisotropic plasmonic NPs. We present a representative overview of the advances in the synthetic strategies and outline an extensive catalogue of Au-NR-based heterostructures with tailored architectures and special functionalities. The bottom-up assembly of Au NRs into preprogrammed metastructures is then discussed, as well as the design principles. We also provide a systematic elucidation of the different plasmonic properties associated with the Au-NR-based structures, followed by a discussion of the promising applications of Au NRs in various fields. We finally discuss the future research directions and challenges of Au NRs.

ABSTRACT

Chiral plasmonic nanoparticles have attracted much attention because of their strong chiroptical responses and broad scientific applications. However, the types of chiral plasmonic nanoparticles have remained limited. Herein we report on a new type of chiral nanoparticle, chiral Au nanorod (NR) with five-fold rotational symmetry, which is synthesized using chiral molecules. Three different types of Au seeds (Au elongated nanodecahedrons, nanodecahedrons, and nanobipyramids) are used to study the growth behaviors. Different synthesis parameters, including the chiral molecules, surfactant, reductant, seeds, and Au precursor, are systematically varied to optimize the chiroptical responses of the chiral Au NRs. The chiral scattering measurements on the individual chiral Au NRs and their dimers are performed. Intriguingly, the chiroptical signals of the individual chiral Au NRs and their end-to-end dimers are similar, while those of the side-by-side dimers are largely reduced. Theoretical calculations and numerical simulations reveal that the different chiroptical responses of the chiral NR dimers are originated from the coupling effect between the plasmon resonance modes. Our study enriches chiral plasmonic nanoparticles and provides valuable insight for the design of plasmonic nanostructures with desired chiroptical properties.

ABSTRACT

Light-driven nanomotors have attracted much attention due to their potential applications. The movement of conventional nanomotors typically occurs in the solution phase, which limits their application fields. Utilizing visible light to drive nanomotors at the solid-liquid interface represents a grand challenge due to the large friction force between the nanomotor and the solid surface. Based on the attractive plasmon resonance of Au nanocrystals, for the first time, plasmon-enhanced Au nanocrystal-based nanomotors moving at the silicon-aqueous solution interface have been developed. Such nanomotors move with a clear trace engraved on the Si surface, representing an excellent and exceptional self-traced nanomotor system. In addition, the nanomotor trace on the Si surface also provides a unique and promising approach to the fabrication of nanoscale Si patterns, which is central to many applications, including microelectronics, sensing, information storage, and optoelectronics.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an extremely serious foodborne pathogen accounting for a vast number of hospitalizations. In this system, a simple, rapid, and safe compound method was developed based on carbonyl iron powder (CIP) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Then, the CIP@MWCNT-based aptasensor was constructed by strong π-stacking between nanocomposite and aptamer, single-strand DNA, causing fluorescent quenching of the dye-labeled aptamer. The restoration of dye fluorescence could be achieved when aptamer came off the surface of the CIP@MWCNT nanocomposite due to the presence of target bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, this fabrication of magnetic carbon nanotubes without irritating and corrosive reagents is described for the first time. The sensing platform was also an improvement on the conventional formation of the aptasensor between carbon materials and DNA aptamer. The nanocomposite was verified by diverse characterization of zeta potential, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The CIP@MWCNT-based aptasensor was an effective nanoplatform for quantitative detection of E. coli O157:H7, and was measured to have high specificity, good reproducibility, and strong stability. The aptasensor's capacity to quantify E. coli O157:H7 was as low as 7.15 × 103 cfu/mL in pure culture. The detection limit of E. coli O157:H7 was 3.15 × 102 cfu/mL in contaminated milk after 1 h of pre-incubation. Hence, the developed assay is a new possibility for effective synthesis of nanocomposites and sensitive tests of foodborne pathogens in the dairy industry.

ABSTRACT

Long noncoding RNAs serve as novel regulatory molecules involved in various biological processes, but their role in osteoarthritis (OA) remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the inflammatory mechanisms regulated by CILinc02 and methylene blue in human osteoarthritic cartilage and to explore the potential functions of CILinc02 and methylene blue in OA. The expression level of CILinc02 in OA cartilage tissues and primary cells was obtained using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The cytokines, such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-17, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), involved in the degradation of chondrocyte in CILinc02 knockdown OA primary cells, which were treated with methylene blue that were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The results showed that CILinc02 was overexpressed in osteoarthritic cartilage tissues and in OA primary cells, but methylene blue can inhibit the expression of CILinc02. In addition, overexpression of CILinc02 induced the inflammation and apoptosis in primary OA cells, however, the effect of methylene blue was reversed compared to CILinc02. Meanwhile, methylene blue can regulate the expression of TIMP-1, MMP-1, and MMP-13 proteins, thereby suppressing the degradation of chondrocyte in OA. This evidence indicates that methylene blue can act as an inflammatory inhibitor by targeting CILinc02 to regulate the inflammatory response.

ABSTRACT

Glycolipid metabolic disorders (GLMD) refer to a series of metabolic disorders caused by abnormal processes of glucose and lipid synthesis, decomposition, and absorption in the body, leading to glucose and lipid excess, insulin resistance, and obesity. Probiotic intervention is a new strategy to alleviate metabolic syndrome. Lactobacillus paracasei JY062 (L. paracasei JY062) was separated from the Tibet-fermented dairy products. The results demonstrated a strong ability to relieve blood glucose disorders, blood lipid disorders, and tissue damage. The LPH group had the best effect, significantly decreasing the total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), leptin, insulin, and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations and increasing the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, adiponectin, and GLP-1 level compared to HFD-group mice. L. paracasei JY062 could activate the APN-AMPK pathway, increased AdipoQ, AMPK GLUT-4, and PGC-1α mRNA expression and decreased SREBP-1c, ACC, and FAS mRNA expression. L. paracasei JY062 intervention decreased the relative abundance of harmful bacteria, increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, and restored the imbalance of gut microbiota homeostasis caused by a high-glucose-fat diet. L. paracasei JY062 alleviated glucolipid metabolism disorders via the adipoinsular axis and gut microbiota. This study provided a theoretical basis for probiotics to ameliorate glucolipid metabolism disorders by regulating the adipoinsular axis.

ABSTRACT

The deposition of chiral nanoparticles (NPs) onto various substrates is crucial for the fabrication of high-density photonic devices. Understanding the interaction of chiral light and chiral NPs supported on substrates is essential for developing optical sensors and modulators. However, the chiroptical responses of plasmonic chiral NPs on substrates have remained elusive. Here we provide an important understanding of the correlation between the substrate material and the chiroptical response. The scattering dissymmetry factors of individual chiral Au nanocubes are inverted and enhanced with a gold film. Qualitative theories are proposed to analyze the observed variations in the chiroptical signals of chiral NPs on different substrates. Our results offer an encouraging route for modulating and amplifying the chiroptical signals in the use of chiral NPs in light control, light-based quantum technologies, and sensing.

ABSTRACT

Integrated 2-dimensional (2D) photonic devices such as monolayer waveguide has generated exceptional interest because of their ultimate thinness. In particular, they potentially permit stereo photonic architecture through bond-free van der Waals integration. However, little is known about the coupling and controlling of the single-atom guided wave to its photonic environment, which governs the design and application of integrated system. Here, we report the optical coupling of atomically guided waves to other photonic modes. We directly probe the mode beating between evanescent waves in a monolayer 2D waveguide and a silicon photonic waveguide, which constitutes a vertically integrated interferometer. The mode-coupling measures the dispersion relation of the guided wave inside the atomic waveguide and unveils it strongly modifies matter's electronic states, manifesting by the formation of a propagating polariton. We also demonstrated light modulating and spectral detecting in this compact nonplanar interferometer. These findings provide a generalizable and versatile platform toward monolithic 3-dimensional integrated photonics.

ABSTRACT

Several studies have confirmed the important role of endometrial cancer (EC) in the development and progression of breast cancer (BC), and this study will explore the causal relationship between EC and BC by 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis. Pooled data from published genome-wide association studies were used to assess the association between EC and BC risk in women using 5 methods, namely, inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median (WME), simple multimaximetry (SM) and weighted multimaximetry (WM) with the EC-associated genetic loci as the instrumental variables (IV) and sensitivity analyses were used to assess the robustness of the results. The statistical results showed a causal association between EC and BC (IVW: OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.01-1.32, P = .02; MR-Egger: OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 0.71-1.51, P = .11; weighted median: OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.97-1.31, P = .19; simple plurality method: OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.81-1.15, P = .78; weighted plurality method: OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.81-1.14, P = .75), and the results of the sensitivity analyses showed that there was no significant heterogeneity or multiplicity, and the results were stable. EC is associated with an increased risk of developing BC. The results of this MR analysis can be used as a guideline for screening for BC in women with EC and to help raise awareness of screening for early detection and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Chiral plasmonic nanocrystals have recently attracted increasing attention in circular polarization-dependent photocatalysis driven by hot carriers. While being concealed in traditional ensemble measurements, the individual chiral photocatalytic activity of nanocrystals can exclusively be revealed by directly correlating the circular differential photocurrent response to helical morphologies using single-particle techniques. Herein, we develop a method named circular differential photocurrent mapping (CDPM) and demonstrate that CDPM can be used to characterize the circular differential hot electron (CDHE) response from individual Au nanohelicoids (AuNHs) on a TiO2 photoanode in a photoelectrochemical cell. The single-particle circular differential scattering and CDHE measurements were interpreted with calculations performed on a model in direct correlation to the helical morphologies of the nanocrystal. While CDHE response was found inactive at a dipolar resonance of 750 nm, helicity-convoluted sites of HE generation were identified on the AuNH at a specific higher-order mode of 550 nm, resulting in a significant response of CDHE in association with the handedness of the AuNH. Details of circular differential contributions were further resolved by examining the efficiencies of individual AuNHs in terms of g-factors. Our study provides a powerful microscopic method at the single-particle level for the photocatalytic characterization of chiral nanocrystals, gaining fundamental insights into the photocatalysis of chirality, especially toward plasmon-induced asymmetrical photochemistry or photoelectrochemistry.

ABSTRACT

This study makes a claim of utilizing the photothermal effect of graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) to effectively produce various microbubbles in an optical microfiber system at infrared optical communications band. A low power continuous-wave light at wavelength of 1527-1566 nm was launched into the microfiber to form GONs-deposition which acted as a linear heat source for creating various microbubbles. Both thermal convection flow and optical gradient force were responsible for the driving force to assemble GONs onto the microfiber. This simple optical fiber system can be used for assembling other micro/nanoscale particles and biomolecules, which has prospective applications in sensing, microfluidics, virus detection, and other biochip techniques.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on subchondral bone marrow edema (BME) and the level of biomarkers in synovial fluid of the knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Eighty-one patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis were randomly divided into two groups according to the number of inpatients. Forty-five cases were treated with intra-articular injection of PRP (PRP group), 36 cases were treated with sodium hyaluronate (SH group), and the clinical effects were evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. The changes of subchondral BME were assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after treatment. The levels of TNFα, IL-6, MCP-1, MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-9 in synovial fluid were also detected. RESULTS: All the patients completed the corresponding treatment and were followed up for 12 months without serious complications. After the treatment, the VAS and WOMAC scores of the two groups were significantly decreased, and the difference was statistically significant at different time points (P < 0.05). The VAS and WOMAC scores of the PRP group were better than those of the SH group (P < 0.05). MRI showed that the subchondral bone edema of the two groups were reduced in varying degrees, and the reduction was more noticeable in the PRP group (P < 0.05). The levels of TNFα, IL-6, MCP-1, MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-9 in two groups were decreased, and the difference was statistically significant at different time points (P < 0.05). However, the levels of TNFα, IL-6, MCP-1, MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-9 in the PRP group were significantly lower than those in the SH group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Intra-articular injection of PRP can significantly reduce the subchondral BME and the level of biomarkers in synovial fluid of the symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

ABSTRACT

Plasmonic nanostructures have a capability to control the photoluminescence (PL) emission properties of optical species and thus can dramatically enhance the performances of diverse optical systems and devices. Lanthanide ions typically exhibit multiple PL emission lines. Systematic studies on the plasmon-enabled selective enhancement for the different emission lines of lanthanide ions are still highly desired in order to achieve the fine manipulation on the spectral profile and luminescence intensity ratio (LIR). Herein we report on the synthesis and PL emission properties of monodisperse spherical (Au core)@(Y(V,P)O4:Eu) nanostructures, which integrate the plasmonic and luminescent units into an individual core@shell structure. The localized surface plasmon resonance adjusted through control of the size of the Au nanosphere core enables the systematic modulation of the selective emission enhancement of Eu3+. As revealed by single-particle scattering and PL measurements, the five luminescence emission lines of Eu3+ originating from the 5D0,1 excitation states are affected by the localized plasmon resonance to different extents, which are dependent on both the dipole transition nature and the intrinsic quantum yield of the emission line. Based on the plasmon-enabled tunable LIR, high-level anticounterfeiting and optical temperature measurements for photothermal conversion are further demonstrated. Our architecture design and PL emission tuning results offer many possibilities for constructing multifunctional optical materials by integrating plasmonic and luminescent building blocks into hybrid nanostructures with different configurations.

Objective: To explore the effectiveness and advantages of using Fastpass Scorpion suture passer to stitch the inferior capsulolabral complex in arthroscopic Bankart repair compared with traditional arthroscopic suture shuttle. Methods: The clinical data of 41 patients with Bankart lesion, who met the selection criteria and were admitted between August 2019 and October 2021, was retrospectively analyzed. Under arthroscopy, the inferior capsulolabral complex was stitched with Fastpass Scorpion suture passer in 27 patients (FS group) and with arthroscopic suture shuttle in 14 patients (ASS group). There was no significant difference between the two groups ( P>0.05) in gender, age, injured side, frequency of shoulder dislocation, time from first dislocation to operation, and preoperative Rowe score of shoulder. Taking successful suture and pull-tightening as the criteria for completion of repair, the number of patients that were repaired at 5∶00 to 6∶00 (<6:00) and 6∶00 to 7∶00 positions of the glenoid in the two groups was compared. The operation time, and the difference of Rowe shoulder score betwee pre- and post-operation, the occurrence of shoulder joint dislocation, the results of apprehension test, and the constituent ratio of recovery to the pre-injury movement level between the two groups at 1 year after operation. Results: Both groups completed the repair at 5∶00 to 6∶00 (<6∶00), and the constituent ratio of patients completed at 6∶00 to 7∶00 was significantly greater in the FS group than in the ASS group ( P<0.05). The operation time was significantly shorter in the FS group than in the ASS group ( P<0.05). All incisions in the two groups healed by first intention. All patients were followed up 12-36 months (mean, 19.1 months). No anchor displacement or neurovascular injury occurred during follow-up. Rowe score of shoulder in the two groups significantly improved at 1 year after operation than preoperative scores ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in the difference of Rowe shoulder score between pre- and post-operation between the two groups ( P>0.05). At 1 year after operation, no re-dislocation occurred, and there was no significant difference in the apprehension test and the constituent ratio of recovery to the pre-injury movement level between the two groups ( P>0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the arthroscopic suture shuttle, using Fastpass Scorpion suture passer to stitch the inferior capsulolabral complex in arthroscopic Bankart repair is more convenient, saves operation time, and has good effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

Enriching the library of chiral plasmonic nanoparticles that can be chemically mass-produced will greatly facilitate the applications of chiral plasmonics in areas ranging from constructing optical metamaterials to sensing chiral molecules and activating immune cells. Here we report on a halide-assisted differential growth strategy that can direct the anisotropic growth of chiral Au nanoparticles with tunable sizes and diverse morphologies. Anisotropic Au nanodisks are employed as seeds to yield triskelion-shaped chiral nanoparticles with threefold rotational symmetry and high dissymmetry factors. The averaged scattering g-factors of the L- and D-nanotriskelions are as large as 0.57 and - 0.49 at 650 nm, respectively. The Au nanotriskelions have been applied in chiral optical switching devices and chiral nanoemitters. We also demonstrate that the manipulation of the directional growth rate enables the generation of a variety of chiral morphologies in the presence of homochiral ligands.

Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is the most common congenital variant of the lateral meniscus, which is prone to degeneration and lesions, and often leads to knee osteoarthritis. At present, there is no consensus on the clinical practice of DLM, and this expert consensus and practice guidelines on DLM was developed and approved by Chinese Society of Sports Medicine according to the Delphi method. Among 32 statements drafted, 14 statements were excluded for redundant information, and 18 statements achieved consensus. This expert consensus focused on the definition, epidemiology, etiology, classification, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and rehabilitation of DLM. Restoring the normal shape, retaining appropriate width and thickness, and ensuring the stability of the remnant meniscus is critical to sustaining the physiological function of the meniscus and preserving the knee. The partial meniscectomy with or without repair should be the first-line treatment when possible, given that the clinical and radiological long-term outcomes of total or subtotal meniscectomy are worse.

ABSTRACT

Background: The lateral meniscus is a unique structure of the knee joint, and its anatomy, function, pathological process, and treatment are distinct from those of the medial meniscus. To date, no consensus on the management of lateral meniscal lesions has been published, and clinical decision-making is challenging. To facilitate this, consensus and practice guidelines for lateral meniscal lesions were developed and endorsed by the Chinese Society of Sports Medicine. Study Design: Consensus statement. Methods: This project followed the Delphi approach to the consensus process, involving steering, rating, and peer review groups. A total of 61 experts in the fields of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery were invited to participate in the compilation of a consensus statement on lateral meniscal lesions. (The discoid lateral meniscus was addressed by separate consensus.) To begin, the steering group drafted a set of questions and replies regarding lateral meniscal lesions. An online panel discussion was then held to provide initial agreement and comments on the statements, followed by a round of anonymous voting. Results and feedback were sent to the steering group for a second draft. A second round of voting was then held, and each statement was discussed during a combined meeting of the steering and rating groups. Finally, a consensus draft was evaluated by a review group. Results: Fifty-three questions and answers addressing lateral meniscal lesions were drafted, and 20 statements were excluded because of redundant information during the first round of voting. Ultimately, 33 statements were completed, 9 of which were unanimous. Conclusion: This expert consensus process focused on the anatomy, function, pathological processes, and treatment of lateral meniscal lesions. Accepted recommendations in these areas can assist doctors and therapists in standardizing the management of related pathology. The consensus statement indicates that certain types of lateral meniscal tears that were previously considered irreparable can be repaired. Preservation of the lateral meniscus should be the first-line treatment whenever possible, because the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes are worse after partial meniscectomy.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of conservative and surgical fragment excision treatment in patients with Pipkin type 1 fractures of the femoral head associated with posterior dislocation of the hip by a randomised controlled trial. Sixteen patients were randomly divided into two groups: the conservative group was treated by closed reduction, and the surgical group was treated by closed reduction followed with fragment excision. Functional outcome was determined using the Thompson and Epstein score and the Merle d'Aubigne and Postel score. Outcome of the conservative group was worse than that of the surgical group (p = 0.032). The randomised controlled trial proves surgical fragment excision after closed reduction is an effective treatment for Pipkin type 1 fractures.

Probiotics can prevent obesity and related metabolic complications. In our study, the protective effect and molecular mechanism of Lactobacillus rhamnosus JL1 (separated from the feces of healthy infants) on high-fat diet mice were investigated. After 10 weeks of dietary intervention with L. rhamnosus JL1 intervention, the body weight of the JL1 group (23.78 g) was significantly lower than that of the HFD group (26.59 g, p < 0.05) and the liver index was reduced. Serum biochemical analysis showed that the TC, TG and LDL-C contents of JL1 group mice were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Histological images of the mice livers showed that the degree of lipid action and damage of hepatic cells were improved. L. rhamnosus JL1 activated the AMPK pathway, and reduced the gene expression of PPAR-γ, LXR-α and SREBP-1C. In addition, the protein expression of PPAR-γ and LXR-α were reduced. After dietary intervention with L. rhamnosus JL1, the concentration of acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid were increased significantly, especially the concentration of butyric acid, which was 63.16% higher than that of the HFD group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study provided a theoretical reference for the development and application of probiotics derived from healthy infant feces in health products and functional foods.
