ABSTRACT

Although thin films are typically manufactured in planar sheets or rolls, they are often forced into three-dimensional (3D) shapes, producing a plethora of structures across multiple length scales. To understand this complex response, previous studies have either focused on the overall gross shape or the small-scale buckling that decorates it. A geometric model, which considers the sheet as inextensible yet free to compress, has been shown to capture the gross shape of the sheet. However, the precise meaning of such predictions, and how the gross shape constrains the fine features, remains unclear. Here, we study a thin-membraned balloon as a prototypical system that involves a doubly curved gross shape with large amplitude undulations. By probing its side profiles and horizontal cross-sections, we discover that the mean behavior of the film is the physical observable that is predicted by the geometric model, even when the buckled structures atop it are large. We then propose a minimal model for the horizontal cross-sections of the balloon, as independent elastic filaments subjected to an effective pinning potential around the mean shape. Despite the simplicity of our model, it reproduces a broad range of phenomena seen in the experiments, from how the morphology changes with pressure to the detailed shape of the wrinkles and folds. Our results establish a route to combine global and local features consistently over an enclosed surface, which could aid the design of inflatable structures, or provide insight into biological patterns.

ABSTRACT

Skin aging is an unavoidable natural phenomenon caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In modern society, the pursuit of a wrinkle-free and aesthetically appealing face has gained considerable prominence. Numerous studies have aimed at mitigating the appearance of facial wrinkles. Antiaging research focused on regulating the function of mitochondria, the main reactive oxygen species-generating organelles, has been extensively conducted. In this study, we investigated the correlation between facial wrinkles and the expression of PPARGC1B, considering the association of this gene with mitochondrial function, to identify its potential as a target for exploring antiaging cosmetic materials. We elucidated the role of PPARGC1B in the skin and identified five bioactive materials that modulated its expression. The effectiveness of these materials was verified through in vitro experiments on human dermal fibroblasts. We prepared cosmetic formulations incorporating the five materials and confirmed their ability to enhance dermal collagen in three-dimensional skin models and reduce facial wrinkles under the eyes and nasolabial fold areas in human subjects. The study findings have significant implications for developing novel antiaging cosmetic formulations by reinforcing mitochondrial functions.

ABSTRACT

Flexible and stretchable electronics have attractive applications inaccessible to conventional rigid electronics. However, the mainstream transfer printing techniques have challenges for electronic films in terms of thickness and size and limitations for target substrates in terms of curvature, depth, and interfacial adhesion. Here a facile, damage-free, and contamination-free soap film transfer printing technique is reported that enables the wrinkle-free transfer of ultrathin electronic films, precise alignment in a transparent manner, and conformal and adhesion-independent printing onto various substrates, including those too topographically and adhesively challenging by existing methods. In principle, not only the pattern, resolution, and thickness of transferred films, but also the curvature, depth, and adhesion of target substrates are unlimited, while the size of transferred films can be as high as meter-scale. To demonstrate the capabilities of soap film transfer printing, pre-fabricated ultrathin electronics with multiple patterns, single micron resolution, sub-micron thickness, and centimeter size are conformably integrated onto the ultrathin web, ultra-soft cotton, DVD-R disk with the minimum radius of curvature of 131 nm, interior cavity of Klein bottle and dandelion with ultralow adhesion. The printed ultrathin sensors show superior conformabilities and robust adhesion, leading to engineering opportunities including electrocardiogram (ECG) signal acquisition and temperature measurement in aqueous environments.

ABSTRACT

Structure engineering of magnetic-dielectric multi-components is emerging as an effective approach for presuming high-performance electromagnetic (EM) absorption, but still faces bottlenecks due to the ambiguous regulation mechanism of surface morphology. Here, a novel wrinkled surface structure is tailored on the ZnFe2O4 microsphere via a spray-pyrolysis induced Kirkendall diffusion effect, the conductivity of the sample is affected, and a better impedance matching is adjusted by modulating the concentration of metal nitrate precursors. Driven by a vapor phase polymerization, conductive polypyrrole (PPy) shell are in situ decorated on the ZnFe2O4 microsphere surfaces, ingeniously constructing a core-shell ZnFe2O4@PPy composites. Moreover, a systematic investigation reveals that this unique wrinkled surface structure is highly dependent on the metal salt concentration. Optimized wrinkle ZnFe2O4@PPy composite exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reached -41.0 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) can cover as wide as 4.1 GHz. The enhanced interfacial polarization originated from high-density ZnFe2O4-PPy heterostructure, and the conduction loss of PPy contributes to the boosted dielectric loss capability. This study gives a significant guidance for preparing high-performance EM composites by tailoring the surface wrinkle structure.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of horizontal neck lines as a cosmetic concern is widely acknowledged, yet the available treatment options are limited, and no studies have investigated the use of polydioxanone-barbed threads. These threads, characterized by a finely braided structure, function as a scaffold to attract regenerative factors and facilitate the migration and proliferation of cells. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of concurrent application of braided polydioxanone-barbed threads for addressing horizontal neck wrinkles. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective case series involving four female participants (aged 41, 43, 45, and 46) treated with polydioxanone-barbed threads for horizontal neck wrinkles between January 2023 and July 2023 was conducted. Adult patients were assessed at an 8-week follow-up, revealing a significant reduction in wrinkle intensity based on the Horizontal Neck Wrinkle Severity Scale. RESULTS: The analysis of horizontal neck lines demonstrated a notable decrease in wrinkle intensity according to the Horizontal Neck Wrinkle Severity Scale at the 8-week mark, and this improvement maintained statistical significance. Both patient Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) scores (90%-100%) and physician GAIS scores (100%) were rated as excellent. CONCLUSION: The subdermal application of polydioxanone-barbed threads for horizontal neck lines proves to be a secure and efficacious approach for treating horizontal neck wrinkles, with no observed Tyndall effect. This technique shows promise for rejuvenating the skin in the horizontal neckline region.

BACKGROUND: The delicate periorbital region is susceptible to skin dehydration, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Thus, targeted and effective anti-aging interventions are necessary for the periorbital area. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new anti-aging eye cream formulated with the active complex (Yeast/rice fermentation filtrate, N-acetylneuraminic acid, palmityl tripeptide-1, and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7). METHODS: The cell viability and expressions of key extracellular matrix (ECM) components of the active complex were evaluated using a human skin fibroblast model. In the 12-week clinical trial, skin hydration, elasticity, facial photographs, and collagen density following eye cream application were assessed using Corneometer, Cutometer, VISIA, and ultrasound device, respectively. Dermatologists and participants evaluated clinical efficacy and safety at baseline, and after 4, 8, and 12 weeks. RESULTS: PCR and immunofluorescent analyses revealed that the active complex significantly stimulated fibroblast proliferation (p < 0.05) and markedly promote the synthesis of collagen and elastin. Clinical findings exhibited a substantial enhancement in skin hydration (28.12%), elasticity (18.81%), and collagen production (54.99%) following 12 weeks of eye cream application. Dermatological evaluations and participants' assessments reported a significant improvement in skin moisture, roughness, elasticity, as well as fine lines and wrinkles by week 8. CONCLUSION: The new anti-aging eye cream, enriched with the active complex, demonstrates comprehensive rejuvenating effects, effectively addressing aging concerns in the periorbital area, coupled with a high safety profile.

BACKGROUND: One of the common esthetic complaints of patients is horizontal neck wrinkles that have limited treatment modality. AIM: In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of the Endolift laser on the horizontal neck wrinkles. METHODS: Totally, 10 healthy female and male patients suffering horizontal neck wrinkles were joined in this study. All patients are treated with Endolift laser. The effect of the Endolift methods on the horizontal neck wrinkles was evaluated by biometric parameter changed results with Cutometer, Visioface, and the Skin Ultrasound Imaging system. Also, three blinded dermatologists and patients' satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS: The Visoface results showed that the Endolift laser treatment significantly decline the depth and area of horizontal neck wrinkle. The skin ultrasonography results reported the epidermis and dermis density and thickness were significantly increased. Also, the cutometer outcomes displayed that the Endolift laser treatment can increase skin elasticity. Also, significantly a greater number of patients were well satisfied with the technique. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, Endolift laser is a safe and effective method for decreasing the horizontal neck wrinkles and improving the appearance of the neck. This procedure does not require general anesthesia and recovery time.

BACKGROUND: The lips play a significant role in shaping facial aesthetics. Due to the distinct attributes of lips in contrast to other facial skin, a unique approach is imperative for managing lip aging. We analyzed lip characteristics (morphology, wrinkles, and color) to investigate visual changes and distinctive attributes of aging lips. METHODS: By utilizing image data processing methods, including facial landmark detection, pattern recognition, and color quantification, we extracted 11 lip characteristic indices (four morphological indices, four wrinkle indices, and three color indices) from high-resolution images of 1000 Korean women aged 20-69. Correlation tests were conducted to assess the relationship between lip characteristic indices and age, and also between lip morphological and wrinkle indices. RESULTS: Lip height significantly decreased, while lip width and lip ratio (lip width divided by the sum of the upper and lower lip height) significantly increased with aging. Lip wrinkles significantly increased with aging, whereas lip colors (redness and yellowness) decreased. The lip wrinkle indices, which are segmented for the first time in this study, exhibited significant correlations with lip width, and three of them additionally were correlated with lip ratio (p < 0.05). The results imply such morphological changes can be associated with wrinkle formation of human lips. CONCLUSION: The indices suggested in this study can be used for assessing lip aging characteristics, and the study results can contribute to deeper understanding of lip aging.

ABSTRACT

Freestanding films provide a versatile platform for materials engineering thanks to additional structural motifs not found in films with a substrate. A ubiquitous example is wrinkles, yet little is known about how they can develop over as fast as a few picoseconds due to a lack of experimental probes to visualize their dynamics in real time on the nanoscopic scale. Here, we use time-resolved electron diffraction to directly observe light-activated wrinkling formation in freestanding La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 films. Via a "lock-in" analysis of oscillations in the diffraction peak position, intensity, and width, we quantitatively reconstructed how wrinkles develop on the time scale of lattice vibration. Contrary to the common assumption of fixed boundary conditions, we found that wrinkle development is associated with ultrafast delamination at the film boundaries. Our work provides a generic protocol to quantify wrinkling dynamics in freestanding films and highlights the importance of the film-substrate interaction in determining the properties of freestanding structures.

As the aging population increases, so has interest among emerging seniors in anti-aging ingredients that enhance functionality by incorporating fermentation with natural materials. In this study, fermentation conditions for enhancing the functionality of Hermetia illucens larvae oil (HIO) were established, and its anti-aging potential was evaluated. First, the lipase activity and amount of lipid degradation products of the fermentation strains were measured in order to select Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum as the strains with high fermentation ability. A fermentation period of 28 d and a fermentation method that uses only the strain culture medium were established by evaluating the fermentation degree after fermenting HIO with the selected strains. The whitening functionality test results of fermented HIO (FHIO) showed an increase of approximately 20% in extracellular tyrosinase inhibition activity compared with HIO. Additionally, within melanocytes, there was a 12% increase in tyrosinase inhibition activity and a 26% enhancement in melanin production inhibition ability. For wrinkle-improving functionality, it was observed that, for fibroblasts, there was a 10% increase in collagen production, a 9% increase in collagenase inhibition ability, and an 8% increase in elastase inhibition ability. Therefore, FHIO was confirmed to be an effective cosmetic raw material, with high functionality for anti-aging within the senior generation. This is achieved through increased whitening and wrinkle-improving functionality.

ABSTRACT

Chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight accelerates skin ageing, which is followed by harsh, thick, dry and loose conditions. One of the most demonstrative symptoms is deep wrinkles induced by skin barrier disruption. Our previous research showed that Phaseolus angularis seed extract (PASE) effectively inhibits skin ageing through UVB protection in HaCaT cells by suppressing skin damage. However, its efficacy has not been evaluated in clinical trials so far. PASE cream's effectiveness was initially tested on the artificial skin model, revealing an increase in filaggrin and defence against skin damage. Based on these results, in this single-centred, randomized, double-blind study, we investigated the anti-ageing effect of PASE in human eye wrinkle areas. For these 21 healthy adult women aged 30 to 59, a PASE cream was applied to the right eye wrinkle area and a placebo to the left eye wrinkle area twice a day (morning and evening) for 12 weeks. The change in thick, deep crease wrinkles around the eyes was confirmed by visual evaluation, skin measurements and a questionnaire. As a result, the surface roughness (R1), maximum roughness (R2), average roughness (R3), smoothness depth (R4) and arithmetic mean roughness (R5) values in the group using the PASE cream all decreased. Particularly, R1, R4 and R5 significantly decreased by 18.1%, 18.6% and 25.0%, respectively. Subjects who applied PASE cream also experienced an improvement in skin moisture nearly twice the time compared to the placebo group. In addition, no participants reported side effects. Our study showed that PASE cream led to clinically significant levels of wrinkle improvement. In conclusion, as PASE is a natural, safe food with no side effects, it can be a good resource for natural anti-wrinkle functional cosmetics in the future.


L'exposition chronique aux rayons ultraviolets (UV) du soleil accélère le vieillissement cutané, qui provoque un épaississement et un assèchement de la peau et la rend plus lâche. La présence de rides profondes induites par la rupture de la barrière cutanée en constitue l'un des symptômes les plus manifestes. Lors d'études précédentes, nous nous sommes rendu compte que l'extrait de graines de Phaseolus angularis (PASE) inhibait efficacement le vieillissement de la peau en assurant la protection anti­UVB des cellules HaCaT grâce à la suppression des lésions cutanées. Cependant, son efficacité n'a pas été évaluée lors d'essais cliniques à ce jour. L'efficacité de la crème PASE a d'abord été testée sur le modèle de peau artificielle, sur laquelle elle a fait augmenter les taux de filaggrine et assuré une défense contre les lésions cutanées. Sur la base de ces résultats, dans cette étude unicentrique, randomisée et en double aveugle, nous avons étudié l'effet anti­âge de la PASE chez l'humain au niveau des rides proches de l'œil. Pour ces 21 femmes adultes en bonne santé âgées de 30 à 59 ans, une crème PASE a été appliquée sur la zone de rides de l'œil droit et un placebo sur la zone de rides de l'œil gauche deux fois par jour (matin et soir) pendant 12 semaines. La modification des rides profondes et épaisses autour des yeux a été confirmée par une évaluation visuelle, des mesures cutanées et un questionnaire. Il a été découvert que les valeurs de rugosité de surface (R1), de rugosité maximale (R2), de rugosité moyenne (R3), de profondeur de douceur (R4) et de moyenne arithmétique (R5) dans le groupe à l'aide de la crème PASE avaient toutes diminué. En particulier, R1, R4 et R5 ont significativement diminué de 18,1 %, de 18,6 % et de 25,0 %, respectivement. Les patients qui ont appliqué la crème PASE ont également présenté une amélioration de l'hydratation de la peau presque deux fois supérieure à celle du groupe placebo. En outre, aucun participant n'a signalé d'effets secondaires. Notre étude a montré que la crème PASE entraînait des niveaux cliniquement significatifs d'amélioration des rides. En conclusion, comme le PASE est un aliment naturel, sûr et dépourvu d'effets secondaires, elle peut constituer une bonne ressource pour les cosmétiques fonctionnels naturels antirides à l'avenir.

The prevalence of skin aging and the request for effective treatments have driven dermatological research towards natural solutions. This study investigates the anti-aging efficacy of two bioactive natural polyphenols, Oleocanthal and Oleacein, in a skincare formulation. A single-blind, randomized clinical trial involved 70 participants, using a comprehensive exclusion criterion to ensure participant safety and study integrity. Participants applied the Oleocanthal and Oleacein 1% serum formulation twice daily for 30 days. The efficacy was objectively assessed using the VISIA® Skin Analysis System at baseline, after 15 days, and after 30 days. Results indicated significant wrinkle reduction in most groups. For women aged 45-79 years, the mean change was -33.91% (95% CI: -46.75% to -21.07%). For men aged 20-44 years, it was -51.93% (95% CI: -76.54% to -27.33%), and for men aged 45-79 years, it was -46.56% (95% CI: -58.32% to -34.81%). For women aged 20-44 years, the change was -25.68% (95% CI: -63.91% to 12.54%), not statistically significant. These findings highlight the potential of EVOO-derived polyphenols in anti-aging skincare, particularly for older adults. This research paves the way for further exploration into natural compounds in dermatology, particularly for aging skin management.

In this contribution, dynamic photoinduced wrinkle erasure enabled by photomechanical changes in supramolecular polymer-azo complexes was characterized via confocal microscopy. Different photoactive molecules, disperse yellow 7 (DY7) and 4,4'-dihydroxyazobenzene (DHAB), were compared to 4-hydroxy-4'-dimethylaminoazobenzene (OH-azo-DMA). The characteristic erasure times of wrinkles were quickly assessed by using an image processing algorithm. The results confirm that the photoinduced movement on the topmost layer can be successfully transferred to the substrate. Furthermore, the chosen supramolecular strategy allows decoupling the effect of molecular weight of the polymer and photochemistry of the chromophore, allowing quantitative comparison of wrinkling erasure efficiency of different materials and providing a facile way to optimize the system for specific applications.

We demonstrate wrinkle-bioinspired flexible SERS sensor covered by silver nanowire (AgNWs) network for the detection of pesticide molecules. Compared with the silver film deposition substrates, the wrinkle-bioinspired AgNWs SERS substrates show stronger SERS effect, which were attributed to the electromagnetic field enhancement posed by the relatively high density "hot spots" of AgNWs. In order to investigate the adsorption performance of wrinkle-bioinspired flexible sensors, we measured the corresponding contact angles of AgNWs on the substrate surfaces before and after plasma treatment and found that the AgNWs treated with plasma are more hydrophilic than that without plasma treatment. Additionally, the wrinkle-bioinspired SERS sensors show different SERS activities under different tensile strain, and the 10-6 mol/L concentration of Rhodamine dye (R6G) molecules can be detected by portable Raman spectra, reducing greatly detection cost. The surface plasmon resonance of AgNWs is induced by adjusting the deformation of AgNWs substrate, enhancing the SERS signal. This reliability of wrinkle-bioinspired SERS sensors is further verified by in situ detection of pesticide molecules.

The surface morphology of mature biofilms is heterogeneous and can be divided into concentric rings wrinkles (I), labyrinthine networks wrinkles (II), radial ridges wrinkles (III), and branches wrinkles (IV), according to surface wrinkle structure and distribution characteristics. Due to the wrinkle structures, channels are formed between the biofilm and substrate and transport nutrients, water, metabolic products, etc. We find that expansion rate variations of biofilms growing on substrates with high and low agar concentrations (1.5, 2.0, 2.5 wt.%) are not in the same phase. In the first 3 days' growth, the interaction stress between biofilm and each agar substrate increases, which makes the biofilm expansion rate decreases before wrinkle pattern IV (branches) comes up. After 3 days, in the later growth stage after wrinkle pattern IV appears, the biofilm has larger expansion rate growing on 2.0 wt.% agar concentration, which has the larger wrinkle distance in wrinkle pattern IV reducing energy consumption. Our study shows that the stiff substrate does not always inhibit the biofilm expansion, although it does in the earlier stage; after that, mature biofilms acquire larger expansion rate by adjusting the growth mode through the wrinkle evolution even in nutrient extremely depletion.

BACKGROUND: Wrinkles appear with aging, producing an aged impression, but the mechanism of wrinkle formation has not yet been fully elucidated. We recently reported that subcutaneous fat infiltrates into the dermal layer with aging and impairs skin elasticity, but the contribution of this process to wrinkle formation is still unclear. PURPOSE: We aimed to clarify the contribution of dermal fat infiltration to wrinkle formation by analyzing the relationship between them in the forehead of female volunteers. METHODS: We measured the severity of fat infiltration in the forehead of 29 middle-aged female volunteers by means of ultrasonography. Fixed wrinkles present when the eyes were closed and wrinkles transiently formed when the eyes were open were evaluated using a photograph-based 6-grade evaluation system for each type of wrinkle. RESULTS: Fat infiltration at the forehead area was observed similarly to that in the cheek area as we reported previously. We found that opening the eyes induced the formation of stable transient wrinkles, the grade of which was significantly related to fat infiltration severity. Furthermore, fat infiltration was also significantly related to the severity of fixed wrinkles. Moreover, the severity of transient wrinkles was significantly related to that of fixed wrinkles. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that fat infiltration into the dermal layer enhances transient wrinkle formation during facial expression by impairing the ability of the skin to resist deformation, thereby promoting fixed wrinkle formation. Therefore, fat infiltration is a critical cause of wrinkle formation.

BACKGROUND: Wrinkles represent a characteristic symptom of skin aging. In recent years, various studies have focused on their prevention and/or cure. However, clinical tests are still the only method available to directly detect and evaluate the anti-wrinkle efficacy of various substances. Moreover, no in vitro strategy for such anti-aging skin analysis has been reported. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to develop a novel technology to overcome these limitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full-thickness (FT) skin wrinkle mimics with various widths and depths were fabricated using a collagen stamping method. These were analyzed and compared using 2D and 3D Swept Source-Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) imaging technologies. RESULTS: SS-OCT demonstrated superficial and cross-sectional images of the wrinkle mimics, and the size of the wrinkles was validated using image analysis. Retinoic acid treatment significantly decreased both the depth and width of wrinkles formed in the FT skin wrinkle mimics. CONCLUSIONS: Using 3D tissue engineering and SS-OCT imaging technologies, we developed a novel in vitro technique that can directly detect skin wrinkles. This significantly efficient method could lead to an alternative strategy for animal experiments and preclinical anti-aging research on the skin.

BACKGROUND: Sagging of facial skin is a critical factor associated with an aged appearance. However, the mechanism of sagging has not been fully elucidated. The facial skin contains vellus hair (fine hair), but the contribution of vellus hair to skin condition and facial aging has yet to be studied. AIM: We aimed to clarify the influence of vellus hair on the physical properties and sagging severity of facial skin by establishing an evaluation system for vellus hair condition. METHOD: Photographs were taken to assess the vellus hair condition in the cheek area in 30 middle-aged female volunteers. Skin elasticity was measured with a cutometer and sagging severity was evaluated by using previously established photograph-based grading criteria. RESULTS: Facial skin vellus hairs were divided into three types: fine, thick, and normal thickness. Based on this observation, we established a 6-grade photograph-based grading system based on the dominant type of vellus hair in the target area and used it to evaluate vellus hair condition at the cheek. We found that vellus hair condition is significantly positively related to skin elasticity parameters Ua/Uf (representing overall elasticity including creep and creep recovery), Ur/Ue (representing net elasticity without viscoelastic creep), and Ur/Uf (ratio of elastic recovery to total deformation). Further, vellus hair condition was significantly negatively correlated to sagging severity. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that vellus hair condition positively contributes to the skin's physical properties, and consequently deterioration of the vellus hair condition promotes an aged facial appearance.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to establish and validate a new wrinkle clinical assessment scale to measure Chinese Han women`s validated lacrimal groove. METHODS: Three clinical investigators asked to rate lacrimal groove wrinkles severity one each side for 30 photographic images from 15 subjects. Five-grade rating scale has been used in this clinical assessment. Scale definitions was standardized by 6 researchers in visual and descriptive formats. Assessments were conducted independently and were repeated after 1 week. RESULTS: For 30 photos from 15 subjects, test-retest of three investigators analyzed by Spearman's correlation were between 0.967 and 0.993 (p < 0.001), and by ICC Cronbach's α were between 0.989 and 0.997 (p < 0.001); intraobserver agreement of three investigators analyzed by Spearman's correlation were between 0.652 and 0.897 (p < 0.001), and by ICC Cronbach's α were between 0.840 and 0.959 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This lacrimal groove wrinkles visual assessment scale is a valid and reliable instrument for quantitative assessment of China woman skin folds with inter- and intraobserver consistency. This assessment scale should prove a useful clinical tool by allowing objective and reproducible grading for assessing the effectiveness of lacrimal groove area.

BACKGROUND: Several advanced methods for evaluating wrinkles are currently available, however, with limitations in their application because wrinkle structures change in response to facial expressions and surrounding environments. A Visual Illusion-based image feature enhancement System (VIS) was used to develop a real-time evaluation method. OBJECTIVES: This study expands the VIS application into the wrinkle evaluation method by adjusting VIS to evaluate facial wrinkles, evaluating the age-dependent wrinkles, and validating it for real-time wrinkle evaluation. METHODS: Wrinkles in various Japanese men and women were evaluated using VIS and the current methods. Furthermore, the effectiveness of an eye cream containing niacinamide was evaluated before and after the 4-week treatment. RESULTS: VIS qualitatively detects even fine wrinkles and numerically records them without any special instrument. Moreover, VIS can be applied to moving images, revealing the effectiveness of the antiwrinkle formulation qualitatively and quantitatively even when the subjects are smiling. CONCLUSION: This paper presents an epoch-making wrinkle evaluation method that is qualitative and quantitative, with high sensitivity in real-time and relies solely on digital images without any difficulties. Therefore, these results imply that this method enables the wrinkle evaluation under real-life conditions.
