An 'outbreak' of pulmonary pseudoinfection by Serratia marcescens.

The recovery of multiple isolates of Serratia marcescens from bronchial lavage specimens was traced to contaminated fibreoptic bronchoscopes. Four patients were involved and none became infected. Awareness of a cluster of serratia cultures and immediate investigation and institution of control measures may have prevented the occurrence of true infections.

Primary actinomycotic empyema.

We have presented a rare case of massive primary actinomycotic empyema, which resolved after combined cefazolin therapy and continuous pleural drainage. Poor dental hygiene and heavy smoking are proposed as predisposing factors.

Group VE-1 septicemia.

A severely immunocompromised patient developed septicemia while under treatment for pancreatitis. An organism isolated from three separate blood cultures was identified as CDC group VE-1. The biochemical characteristics, taxonomy, and antibiotic sensitivity of this organism are presented.
