RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the MALDI-TOF MS to identify 151 isolates of Aeromonas obtained mostly from diseased fish. MALDI-TOF MS correctly identified all isolates to the genus level but important differences in the percentage of isolates correctly identified depending on the species were observed. Considering exclusively the first identification option, Aeromonas bestiarum, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas sobria were the best identified with results >95%. However, considering the first and second identification options, the only species that showed values >90% was A. hydrophila. Overall, when the database was supplemented with 14 new spectra, the number of accurate identifications increased (41% vs. 55%) and the number of inconclusive identifications decreased (45% vs. 29%), but great differences in the success of species-level identifications were found. Species-distinctive mass peaks were identified only for A. hydrophila and A. bestiarum (5003 and 7360 m/z in 95.5% and 94.1% of their isolates, respectively). This work demonstrates the utility of MALDI-TOF MS for Aeromonas identification to the genus level, but there is no consistency for the accurate identification of some of the most prevalent species implicated in fish disease.

RESUMEN

Hypertrophy of the tensor fascia lata muscle is an uncommon clinical entity, which can simulate a soft tissue tumour. In most patients, it presents as a palpable proximal anterior thigh mass. The characteristic appearance on CT or MRI allows a confident diagnosis of muscle hypertrophy to be made, avoiding unnecessary diagnostic biopsy or surgical intervention. In cases with suspected radiculopathy, electromyography is also useful. We present an illustrative case of hypertrophy of the tensor fascia lata muscle and its outcome after rehabilitation treatment.

RESUMEN

A common goal for astrobiology is to detect organic materials that may indicate the presence of life. However, organic materials alone may not be representative of currently living systems. Thus, it would be valuable to have a method with which to determine the health of living materials. Here, we present progress toward this goal by reporting on the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to study characteristics of live and dead cells using Escherichia coli (E. coli) strain K12 cells as a model organism since its growth and death in the laboratory are well understood. Our goal is to determine whether LIBS, in its femto- and/or nanosecond forms, could ascertain the state of a living organism. E. coli strain K12 cells were grown, collected, and exposed to one of two types of inactivation treatments: autoclaving and sonication. Cells were also kept alive as a control. We found that LIBS yields key information that allows for the discrimination of live and dead E. coli bacteria based on ionic shifts reflective of cell membrane integrity.

Glycogenosis type III is a genetic disease located in chromosome 1p21, inherited with recessive autosomal character, that produces a deficit of the debranching enzyme necessary for the release of glucose from glycogen. It is clinically manifested with muscular and cardiac symptoms. In this clinical case, the clinical, diagnostic characteristics and treatment of a middle aged woman, only with myopathy symptoms, with significant functional alteration that partially responds to pharmacological and rehabilitation treatment, are described. This study aims to present a rare type of myopathy in its clinical, analytic and electromyographic manifestations of interest for the rehabilitation physician
