RESUMEN

While various marine predators form associations, the most commonly studied are those between subsurface predators and seabirds, with gulls, shearwaters or terns frequently co-occurring with dolphins, billfish or tuna. However, the mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly understood. Three hypotheses have been proposed to explain the prevalence of these associations: (1) subsurface predators herd prey to the surface and make prey accessible to birds, (2) subsurface predators damage prey close to the surface and thereby provide food scraps to birds, and (3) attacks of underwater predators lower the cohesion of prey groups and thereby their collective defences making the prey easier to be captured by birds. Using drone footage, we investigated the interaction between Indo-Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and terns (Onychoprion sp.) preying on schooling fish off the eastern coast of the Malaysian peninsula. Through spatio-temporal analysis of the hunting behaviour of the two predatory species and direct measures of prey cohesion we showed that terns attacked when school cohesion was low, and that this decrease in cohesion was frequently caused by sailfish attacks. Therefore, we propose that sailfish created a by-product benefit for the bird species, lending support to the hypothesis that lowering cohesion can facilitate associations between subsurface predators and seabirds.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if consumption of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate breakfast (PRO) leads to a lower subsequent ad libitum energy intake at lunch and the rest of the day compared with ingestion of an isocaloric low-protein, high-carbohydrate breakfast (CHO) or no breakfast (CON). The study was designed as a randomized controlled 3-period crossover study. Thirty young (18-30 yr) females with overweight to obesity (body mass index >25 kg/m2) in random order completed 3 separate experimental days where they consumed either a PRO, CHO, or CON breakfast test meal followed by an ad libitum lunch meal 3 h after breakfast. Participants were allocated to a sequence group by their inclusion number. The PRO and CHO breakfasts were matched in dietary fiber and fat content. Energy intake at lunch was calculated and dietary records were obtained for the rest of the day to calculate the total daily energy intake and macronutrient intake. Ratings of appetite sensations between meals and palatability of the test meals were assessed using visual analog scale sheets in intervals ranging from 10 to 30 min. In addition, blood samples were obtained at multiple time points separated by 10 to 60 min intervals between breakfast and lunch and were analyzed for appetite-regulating gut hormones, insulin, and glucose. Finally, performance in a cognitive concentration test was tested 150 min after breakfast. Compared with CHO and CON, the area under the curves for satiety, fullness, and satisfaction in the 3 h after breakfast were significantly higher after PRO, whereas the areas under the curve for hunger, desire to eat, and prospective eating were significantly lower after PRO. The appetite-regulating gut hormones cholecystokinin, glucagon-like peptide-1, and ghrelin in the hours after breakfast, energy intake during the ad libitum lunch meal, and the total daily energy intake did not differ significantly between PRO, CHO, and CON. However, the cognitive concentration test score was 3.5 percentage points higher for PRO, but not CHO, versus CON. A dairy-based high-protein, low-carbohydrate breakfast increased satiety sensation in the hours after breakfast but did not reduce total daily energy intake compared with an isocaloric low-protein, high-carbohydrate breakfast or omitting breakfast. However, performance in a cognitive concentration test before lunch was enhanced after the high-protein, low-carbohydrate breakfast, but not the low-protein, high-carbohydrate breakfast, compared with omitting breakfast.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the quality of evidence and the expected added clinical value of treatments recommended by the Danish Medicines Council (DMC). STUDY DESIGN: This was an observational study. METHODS: The DMC prepares reports on drugs considered for possible new standard treatments in Danish hospitals. These reports evaluate the available evidence on efficacy and safety. The quality of evidence is systematically rated by the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria, and estimates of added clinical value are presented. The recommendations take into account expected economic implications of new treatments. The publicly available reports up until December 29, 2021, were downloaded from the DMC Web page. Reports on drugs marked "recommended" were included. Data on quality of evidence, expected clinical value, and economic implications were imputed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. RESULTS: Seventy-nine reports were included in the analysis. In 79% of these, the quality of evidence was rated low (24%) or very low (55%), whereas no recommendations were based on evidence rated as high quality. Three (5%) of recommended treatments were expected to add large clinical value. CONCLUSIONS: Most recommendations by the DMC are based on evidence formally rated as low or very low quality by GRADE, and no recommendations were based on evidence rated as high quality. The added clinical value of the treatments was often not documented and rarely large. Continued attention to improve the clinical evidence behind national recommendations is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Older people are particularly vulnerable to severe COVID-19. Little is known about long-term consequences of COVID-19 on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and functional status in older people, and the impact of age in this context. We aimed to study age-related change in health-related quality of life, functional decline and mortality among older patients 6 months following hospitalisation due to COVID-19. METHODS: This was a cohort study including patients aged 60 years and older admitted to four general hospitals in South-Eastern Norway due to COVID-19, from March 1 up until July 1, 2020. Patients who were still alive were invited to attend a six-month follow-up. Change in HR-QoL and functional status compared to before the COVID-19 hospitalisation were assessed using the EuroQol 5-dimensional-5 levels questionnaire (EQ. 5D-5L). A change in visual analogue scale (VAS) score of 7 or more was considered clinically relevant. RESULTS: Out of 216 patients aged 60 years and older that were admitted to hospital due to COVID-19 during the study period, 171 were still alive 180 days after hospital admission, and 106 patients (62%) attended the six-month follow-up. Mean age was 74.3 years, 27 patients (26%) had experienced severe COVID-19. Fifty-seven participants (54%) reported a decrease in the EQ. 5D-5L VAS score after 6 months, with no significant difference between persons aged 75 years and older compared to younger. Seventy participants (66%) reported a negative change in any of the dimensions of the EQ. 5D-5L, with impaired ability to perform activities of daily life (35%), reduced mobility (33%) and having more pain or discomfort (33%) being the most commonly reported changes. Forty-six participants (43%) reported a negative change in cognitive function compared to before the COVID-19 hospitalisation. Six-month mortality was 21%, and increased with increasing age. CONCLUSIONS: More than half of the patients reported a negative change in HR-QoL 6 months following hospitalisation due to COVID-19, and one out of three experienced a persistently impaired mobility and ability to carry out activities of daily living. The results suggest awareness of long-term functional decline in older COVID-19 patients.

Linking morphological differences in foraging adaptations to prey choice and feeding strategies has provided major evolutionary insights across taxa. Here, we combine behavioural and morphological approaches to explore and compare the role of the rostrum (bill) and micro-teeth in the feeding behaviour of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) when attacking schooling sardine prey. Behavioural results from high-speed videos showed that sailfish and striped marlin both regularly made rostrum contact with prey but displayed distinct strategies. Marlin used high-speed dashes, breaking schools apart, often contacting prey incidentally or tapping at isolated prey with their rostra; while sailfish used their rostra more frequently and tended to use a slower, less disruptive approach with more horizontal rostral slashes on cohesive prey schools. Capture success per attack was similar between species, but striped marlin had higher capture rates per minute. The rostra of both species are covered with micro-teeth, and micro-CT imaging showed that species did not differ in average micro-tooth length, but sailfish had a higher density of micro-teeth on the dorsal and ventral sides of their rostra and a higher amount of micro-teeth regrowth, suggesting a greater amount of rostrum use is associated with more investment in micro-teeth. Our analysis shows that the rostra of billfish are used in distinct ways and we discuss our results in the broader context of relationships between morphological and behavioural feeding adaptations across species.

Billfishes are well known for their distinctive elongated rostra, i.e. bills. The functional significance of billfish rostra has been frequently discussed and the recent discovery of an oil gland (glandula oleofera) at the base of the rostrum in swordfish, Xiphias gladius, has added an interesting facet to this discussion regarding the potential co-evolution of gland and rostra. Here, we investigated the oil gland and oil pores (through which the oil is brought to the skin surface) of four billfish species - swordfish, Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), Indo-Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) - and provide detailed evidence for the presence of an oil gland in the last three. All four species had a high density of oil pores on the forehead which is consistent with the hypothesis of hydrodynamic benefits of the oil. The extension of the pores onto the front half of the rostrum in sailfish and striped marlin, but not in swordfish or blue marlin, suggests that the oil may have additional functions. One such function could be linked to the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of the oil. However, the available evidence on predatory rostrum use (and hence the likelihood of tissue damage) is only partly consistent with the extension of pores on rostra across species. We conclude that the oil gland probably serves multiple, non-mutually exclusive functions. More detailed information on rostrum use in blue marlin and swordfish is needed to better link behavioural and morphological data with the aim of accomplishing a full comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinical use of continuous electrocardiography (cECG) for detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) after stroke is unclear. In a Danish nationwide cohort, we described post-stroke time trends in outpatient cECG usage and AF incidence and characterized factors associated with cECG use. METHODS: Patients without AF discharged after their first ischaemic stroke between 2010 and 2016 were identified from Danish nationwide registries. cECG included Holter or event recording within 120 days from discharge. Cumulative incidence analysis and multivariable adjusted logistic regression were used to assess time trends and factors associated with cECG usage and AF. RESULTS: The study population comprised 39 641 patients. Cumulative use of cECG increased threefold from 3.3% [95% confidence intervals (CI), 2.8-3.8] in 2010 to 10.5% (95% CI, 9.7-11.3) in 2016. Correspondingly, cumulative incidence of post-stroke AF increased from 1.9% (95% CI, 1.5-2.3) to 2.8% (95% CI, 2.4-3.2). Of all cECG-evaluated patients, 6.3% received an AF diagnosis versus 2.2% of the unevaluated. Receiving cECG was associated with increased odds of AF (odds ratio, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.8-4.0). Lower age, milder strokes and less comorbidity were associated with increased odds of receiving cECG. In contrast, risk factors for AF were increasing age and more comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS: Post-stroke outpatient cECG use and AF incidence have increased over time, but screening rates were low. cECG use was associated with tripled odds of detecting AF. There was a disparity between factors associated with cECG use and risk factors of AF. This raise questions as to the appropriateness of the current clinical approach to post-stoke AF detection.

Objective: The aim was to explore dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) as an early marker of therapeutic response in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) starting treatment with certolizumab pegol (CZP).Method: In 40 RA patients initiating CZP (27 patients) or 2 weeks of placebo (PCB) followed by CZP (13 patients), DCE-MRI of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints was performed at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. Using semi-automated software, three methods for drawing volume regions of interest (ROIs) in MCP2-5 and PIP2-5 were applied: 'Standard' (slices: all; joints: MCP2-5 together and PIP2-5 together), 'Detailed' (slices: slices with high-quality visualization; joints: as Standard), and 'Single-joint' (slices: as Detailed; joints: each joint separately). The number of enhancing voxels (Nvoxel), initial rate of enhancement (IRE), and maximum enhancement (ME) were extracted and analysed for each method.Results: Nvoxel in MCP2-5, and IRE and ME in PIP2-5 decreased statistically significantly (Wilcoxon rank-sum test, p < 0.02-0.03) after 16 weeks of treatment for the Standard method. Nvoxel and ME decreased significantly more in the CZP group than in the PCB group after 1 week of treatment, but not at later time-points. There were no significant changes for DCE-MRI parameters for the Detailed and Single-joint methods.Conclusions: Certain DCE-MRI parameters detected decreased inflammation during CZP treatment in RA patients. Using specific criteria for ROIs, as in the Detailed and Single-joint methods, decreased the statistical power and could not show any changes over time.

BACKGROUND: Angiopoietin-2 (Angpt2) mediates endothelial dysfunction (ED) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Its triggers are, however, poorly understood. METHODS: We examined the time course of ED beyond the early phase of postoperative recovery in 75 patients following CABG with a special focus on different cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) modes as potential triggers of Angpt2 release. RESULTS: Nine patients (12.0%) underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB), 31 patients (41.3%) received minimized extracorporeal circulation (MECC), and 35 patients (46.6%) were operated on with (conventional) CPB. Angpt2 levels steadily increased across the observation period (1.7 [1.4-2.1] to 3.4 [2.5-6.1] ng/ml, p < 0.001). Angpt2 levels did not differ between the MECC and CPB groups (p = 0.564). There was no difference between MECC and CPB patients regarding net fluid balance (p = 0.821) and other surrogate markers of postoperative ED. The magnitude of Angpt-2 increase correlated more strongly with baseline C­reactive protein (r = 0.459, p < 0.001) than with any other parameter. Hospital length of stay correlated more strongly with baseline Angpt2 levels (r = 0.512, p = 0.005) than with follow-up Angpt2 levels and appeared not to be influenced by CPB mode (p = 0.428). CONCLUSION: CABG is associated with prolonged ED, which is determined by the patient's preoperative inflammatory state rather than by CPB modifications.

BACKGROUND: Haemophilic arthropathy is a chronic and debilitating joint disease caused by recurrent spontaneous joint bleeds in patients with haemophilia. Understanding how characteristics of individual joint bleeds relate to the subsequent development of arthropathy could improve management and prevention of this joint disease. Here, we aimed to explore relations between joint bleed characteristics and development of bone pathology in a mouse model of haemophilic arthropathy by using novel in vivo imaging methodology. METHODS: We characterised induced knee bleeds in a murine model of haemophilic arthropathy by quantitative in vivo fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) and by measurements of changes in the diameter of the injured knee. Wild-type mice and non-injured haemophilic mice acted as controls. Development of arthropathy was characterised by post mortem evaluation of bone pathology by micro-CT 14 days after bleed-induction. In an in vitro study, we assessed the effect of blood on the quantification of fluorescent signal with FMT. RESULTS: In most injured haemophilic mice, we observed significant loss of trabecular bone, and half of the mice developed pathological bone remodelling. Development of pathological bone remodelling was associated with significantly increased fluorescent signal and diameter of the injured knee just 1 day after induction of the bleed. Further, a correlation between the fluorescent signal 1 day after induction of the bleed and loss of trabecular bone reached borderline significance. In the in vitro study, we found that high concentrations of blood significantly decreased the fluorescent signal. CONCLUSION: Our results add novel insights on the pathogenesis of haemophilic arthropathy and underline the importance of the acute phase of joint bleeds for the subsequent development of arthropathy.

Childhood obesity is associated with severe physical and psychological health problems. Interventions are often directed at the whole family, but the literature provides no clear indication of the characteristics of an effective family-based intervention. The objective of the present paper is to study whether and how an analytical framework focusing on communicative authenticity can be used to observe and elaborate upon aspects of adherence in relation to health behavior change in a concrete family-based intervention. We do this by focusing on the families' experiences with a Shared-care health education intervention and thus explore the association between families' self-reported experience and their adherence to the intervention. The dataset consists of 21 in-depth semi-structured family interviews. The study shows that the Shared-care model has potential, but that this potential is rarely fulfilled in the intervention form under study. The sharing of care adds potential for several kinds of communicative authenticity because families are met by both the medical knowledge authority at the hospital and the local nurses in their municipality. It is, however, a significant finding that the families rarely benefit from this potential authenticity. Using theories of authenticity in this context adds theoretical and analytical potential and manages to incorporate elements of participation in tasks and practices of value, a sense of who we are and what we know, negotiation of meaning, emphatic caring, consistency between values and actions, and horizons of significance. The article brings new perspectives on how family-based interventions could be tailored to communicatively suit individual families.

From a longitudinal survey conducted on 30 Danish mink farms in 2016, 11.0% of faecal samples (456/4140) were positive for Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts by microscopy, with 60% (189/315) of mink being positive at least once during the study period. Morphological analysis of sporulated oocysts identified Cystoisospora oocysts measuring 34.3 × 29.5 µm with an oocyst length/width (L/W) ratio of 1.2. The morphological features of the oocysts were identical to Isospora laidlawi previously morphological identified in farmed mink from Denmark and elsewhere. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequences (1221 bp) from three positive mink indicated that Cystoisospora from mink shared the highest genetic similarity to C. canis from a Canadian dog (99.6%). The phylogenetic analysis placed Cystoisospora from mink in a clade with other Cystoisospora isolates.

The rennet-induced coagulation ability of milk is important in cheese production. For Swedish Red Dairy Cattle (RDC), this ability is reduced because of a high prevalence of noncoagulating (NC) milk. In this study, we simultaneously combined genetic parameters for NC milk, milk coagulation properties, milk composition, physical traits, and milk protein composition. Our aim was to estimate heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlations for NC milk and 24 traits (milk coagulation properties, milk composition, physical traits, and milk protein composition). Phenotypes and ∼7,000 SNP genotypes were available for all 600 Swedish RDC. The genotypes were imputed from ∼7,000 SNP to 50,000 SNP. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated with an animal model. In Swedish RDC, a moderate heritability estimate of 0.28 was found for NC milk. For the other 24 traits, heritability estimates ranged from 0.12 to 0.77 (standard errors from 0.08 to 0.18). A total of 300 phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated. For phenotypic and genetic correlations, 172 and 95 were significant, respectively. In general, most traits showing significant genetic correlations also showed significant phenotypic correlations. In this study, phenotypic and genetic correlations with NC milk suggest that many correlations between traits exist, making it difficult to predict the real consequences on the composition of milk, if selective breeding is applied on NC milk. We speculate that some of these consequences may lead to changes in the composition of milk, most likely affecting its physical and organoleptic properties. However, our results suggest that κ-casein could be used as an indicator trait to predict the occurrence of NC milk at the herd level.

Milk that does not coagulate after rennet addition, also called noncoagulating (NC) milk, is unwanted in cheese production due to prolonged processing time. Amounts of whey and casein proteins, genetic variants, as well as posttranslational modifications (PTM) of proteins are all contributing factors in rennet-induced coagulation of milk. In this study, we conducted a wide-ranging investigation of milk proteins in milk samples from 616 Swedish Red dairy cattle using liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. Relative concentration of proteins, genetic variants, and PTM were compared between NC milk and coagulating milk. The PTM investigated were phosphorylation of caseins and glycosylation of κ-casein. Several genetic variants and PTM were found, including rare phosphorylation variants of the αS-caseins. Genetic variants were found to effect the expressed amount of different proteins. Further, the effect of protein amounts and PTM on a binary NC milk trait was modeled using a generalized linear model. The model showed that NC milk significantly correlated with higher relative concentrations of α-lactalbumin and ß-casein and lower relative concentrations of ß-lactoglobulin and κ-casein. Regarding PTM of caseins, an effect on NC milk from a lower relative concentration of αS1-casein with 8 phosphate groups were found, even though an effect from total relative concentration of αS1-casein was not found. This study has provided insights into protein variants and PTM important for NC milk to improve this undesirable property.

The Integrative Psychiatric Research (iPSYCH) consortium has established a large Danish population-based Case-Cohort sample (iPSYCH2012) aimed at unravelling the genetic and environmental architecture of severe mental disorders. The iPSYCH2012 sample is nested within the entire Danish population born between 1981 and 2005, including 1 472 762 persons. This paper introduces the iPSYCH2012 sample and outlines key future research directions. Cases were identified as persons with schizophrenia (N=3540), autism (N=16 146), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (N=18 726) and affective disorder (N=26 380), of which 1928 had bipolar affective disorder. Controls were randomly sampled individuals (N=30 000). Within the sample of 86 189 individuals, a total of 57 377 individuals had at least one major mental disorder. DNA was extracted from the neonatal dried blood spot samples obtained from the Danish Neonatal Screening Biobank and genotyped using the Illumina PsychChip. Genotyping was successful for 90% of the sample. The assessments of exome sequencing, methylation profiling, metabolome profiling, vitamin-D, inflammatory and neurotrophic factors are in progress. For each individual, the iPSYCH2012 sample also includes longitudinal information on health, prescribed medicine, social and socioeconomic information, and analogous information among relatives. To the best of our knowledge, the iPSYCH2012 sample is the largest and most comprehensive data source for the combined study of genetic and environmental aetiologies of severe mental disorders.

We quantified blubber concentrations of vitamins A (retinol) and E (α-tocopherol) and evaluated associations with persistent organic pollutants (ΣPOPs) in 14 highly-contaminated killer whales (Orcinus orca) sampled in Greenland from 2012 to 2014. We considered the influence of blubber depth, sex/age class and diet (based on biomass % of major fatty acids) in these relationships. Blubber concentrations of vitamin A averaged 34.1 ±â€¯4.7 µg g-1 wet weight (ww) and vitamin E averaged 35.6 ±â€¯4.4 µg g-1 ww. Although overall vitamin A concentrations did not vary between inner (closer to the muscle) and outer (closer to the skin) blubber layer or between sub-adults and adult females, concentrations in the outer layer of sub-adults were lower compared to the outer layer of adult females (p = 0.03). Outer layer may therefore reflect age accumulation of vitamin A, while in the more active inner layer, age effects might be masked by metabolic needs such as lactation. Neither diet nor ΣPOPs affected vitamin A variation, suggesting this vitamin is highly regulated in the body. Given the high exposures in these killer whales, vitamin A might not be a sensitive biomarker for POPs adverse effects. Vitamin E concentrations were significantly higher in inner compared to outer layer (p < 0.001), likely associated with blubber composition, suggesting that biopsies may not fully represent vitamin E concentrations in blubber. Age-accumulation of vitamin E also occurred with higher concentrations in adult females compared to sub-adults, independent of blubber depth (p < 0.01). Diet, ΣPOPs, and an interaction between these two variables significantly affected vitamin E variation in inner blubber, explaining 91% of this variation. The negative relationship between ΣPOPs (especially Σdichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and Σchlordanes in outer layers) and vitamin E was observed only in killer whales with a diet poorer in polyunsaturated fatty acids, suggested that killer whales feeding more consistently on marine mammals in Arctic environments over a fish-based diet, may be at higher risk of POP-induced disruption in vitamin E homeostasis. Considering diet is therefore important to understand the potential effects of elevated contaminant exposures on levels of certain essential nutrients, i.e., vitamin E, in killer whales.

AIM: To evaluate gastrointestinal sequelae and growth impairment at school age in children who suffered from necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). METHODS: This historic cohort study compared all surviving children born in Denmark between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2011 with NEC in the newborn period, to surviving children without NEC, but same gestational age, birthweight and year of birth. Outcomes were investigated through a parental questionnaire, including gastrointestinal and growth-related outcomes. We performed exploratory ad hoc analysis, by adjusting for possible confounding and by dividing NEC children into surgical and medical. RESULTS: In total, 163 children with NEC (50%) and 237 (36%) without NEC completed the parental questionnaire. Episodes of diarrhoea were more often reported in the NEC group (p = 0.0002). The increased risk seemed to be limited to those who underwent surgery for NEC. The absence from school (1.67 versus 1.31 days), rate of low height for age (17.9 versus 12.1%) and weight (29.9 versus 31.6 kg) did not differ significantly between children with NEC and children without NEC. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that long-term gastrointestinal complications following NEC appeared to be of little clinical importance at the population level and therefore do not encourage specific routine follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of isometric hand grip strength (HGS) and isometric lower limb strength (LS) are often limited to specialized clinics due to high costs and need for specialized equipment and personnel. A mobile and user-friendly device would facilitate a wider use of these measures in the clinical setting. The Nintendo Wii Balance Board (WBB) is a novel and pragmatic tool that has been validated for measuring muscle strength and other clinically relevant physiological variables. However, reference data for HGS and LS are lacking. The purpose of the current study is to establish reference data for HGS and LS in individuals ≥20 years of age using the WBB method, and to characterize the effects of age in these measurements. METHOD: Healthy participants were recruited at various locations and their HGS and LS were tested by six assessors using the WBB. Reference data were analysed and presented in age-groups, while the age-related change in HGS and LS was tested and characterized with linear regression models. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-four participants between 20 and 99 years of age were tested. Data are presented separately according to gender and the following age categories: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+, and presented in absolute values as well as percentiles. The main findings were; (1) Significantly higher HGS and LS among males compared to females and for the dominant limb compared to the non-dominant limb, (2) a significant decline in strength with increasing age, and (3) the rate of decline increased significantly (i.e. it was non-linear) with age for HGS, but not for LS. CONCLUSION: This study reported reference data with percentiles for a novel method for assessing HGS and LS. Data were consistent with previously known effects of age and gender on HGS and LS. The presented data may supplement future trials using the WBB in research or in the clinical setting.

Annotated genomes can provide new perspectives on the biology of species. We present the first de novo whole genome sequencing for the pink-footed goose. In order to obtain a high-quality de novo assembly the strategy used was to combine one short insert paired-end library with two mate-pair libraries. The pink-footed goose genome was assembled de novo using three different assemblers and an assembly evaluation was subsequently performed in order to choose the best assembler. For our data, ALLPATHS-LG performed the best, since the assembly produced covers most of the genome, while introducing the fewest errors. A total of 26,134 genes were annotated, with bird species accounting for virtually all BLAST hits. We also estimated the substitution rate in the pink-footed goose, which can be of use in future demographic studies, by using a comparative approach with the genome of the chicken, the mallard and the swan goose. A substitution rate of 1.38×10-7 per nucleotide per generation was obtained when comparing the genomes of the two closely-related goose species (the pink-footed and the swan goose). Altogether, we provide a valuable tool for future genomic studies aiming at particular genes and regions of the pink-footed goose genome as well as other bird species.

It would be desirable to be able to distinguish fever as a result of febrile non-haemolytic transfusion reactions (FNHTR) from other febrile conditions. To further characterize the inflammatory feature of FNHTR, we measured a large panel of inflammatory markers in pre- and posttransfusion plasma samples from patients with and without FNHTR following the transfusion of leucoreduced red blood cells. As FNHTR patients only displayed a significant increase in IL-6, we conclude that changes in plasma cytokine levels during FNHTR are unlikely to be used diagnostically. An incidental finding of a distinct cytokine pattern in pretransfusion samples from FNHTR patients warrants further investigations, as it might be used to characterize the nature of FNHTR and to predict the risk of these adverse events.
