RESUMEN

Cooperative hunting between humans and killer whales (Orcinus orca) targeting baleen whales was reported in Eden, New South Wales, Australia, for almost a century. By 1928, whaling operations had ceased, and local killer whale sightings became scarce. A killer whale from the group, known as "Old Tom," washed up dead in 1930 and his skeleton was preserved. How these killer whales from Eden relate to other populations globally and whether their genetic descendants persist today remains unknown. We extracted and sequenced DNA from Old Tom using ancient DNA techniques. Genomic sequences were then compared with a global dataset of mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Old Tom shared a most recent common ancestor with killer whales from Australasia, the North Atlantic, and the North Pacific, having the highest genetic similarity with contemporary New Zealand killer whales. However, much of the variation found in Old Tom's genome was not shared with these widespread populations, suggesting ancestral rather than ongoing gene flow. Our genetic comparisons also failed to find any clear descendants of Tom, raising the possibility of local extinction of this group. We integrated Traditional Custodian knowledge to recapture the events in Eden and recognize that Indigenous Australians initiated the relationship with the killer whales before European colonization and the advent of commercial whaling locally. This study rectifies discrepancies in local records and provides new insight into the origins of the killer whales in Eden and the history of Australasian killer whales.

Understanding the responses of organisms to different environmental drivers is critical for improving ecosystem management and conservation. Estuarine ecosystems are under pressure from multiple anthropogenic stressors (e.g. increasing sediment and nutrient loads, pollution, climate change) that are affecting the functions and services these ecosystems provide. Here, we used long-term estuarine benthic invertebrate monitoring data (∼30 year time-series) to evaluate the responses of macrobenthic invertebrate communities and indicator species to climatic, oceanic, freshwater, and local environmental drivers in New Zealand estuaries. We aimed to improve our ability to predict ecosystem change and understand the effects of multiple environment drivers on benthic communities. Our analyses showed that the abundance and richness of macrobenthic fauna and four indicator taxa (bivalves known to have differing tolerances to sediment mud content: Austrovenus stutchburyi, Macomona liliana, Theora lubrica, and Arthritica bifurca) responded to unique combinations of multiple environmental drivers across sites and times. Macrobenthic responses were highly mixed (i.e., positive and negative) and site-dependent. We also show that responses of macrobenthic fauna were lagged and most strongly related to climatic and oceanic drivers. The way the macrobenthos responded has implications for predicting and understanding the ecological consequences of a rapidly changing environment and how we conserve and manage coastal ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has witnessed a reduction in asthma exacerbations across the United Kingdom. Several factors may underpin this, including reduced transmission of seasonal viruses and improved adherence to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). However, little is known about how ICS use has changed during the pandemic. OBJECTIVE: To identify prescribing patterns for asthmatics during the pandemic. METHODS: Using the OpenPrescribing database, we retrospectively analyzed prescribing patterns of ICS, salbutamol and peak flow meters from January 2019 to January 2021 across England. In addition, using a sample asthma cohort at 3 primary care practices in London, we assessed individual prescription patterns. RESULTS: A sharp increase in national ICS prescriptions occurred in March 2020 representing a 49.9% increase compared with February 2020. The sample cohort included 1132 patients (762 ICS treated across both years). Overall ICS adherence improved in 2020 (P < .001), with the proportion of patients meeting "good adherence" (≥75%) increasing from 33.9% to 42.0% (P < .001). The March 2020 spike predominantly reflected improved adherence rather than a hoarding effect of multiple inhalers. Female gender and increasing age were associated with the most significant improvements in adherence. A similar spike in salbutamol occurred in March 2020; however, an overall reduction in salbutamol prescriptions occurred in 2020 (P = .039). National figures highlighted a progressive increase in prescription of peak flow meters over 2020. CONCLUSION: ICS adherence rates remain low; however, a modest improvement in adherence was observed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Salbutamol prescription rates reduced over the same time period, whereas prescriptions for peak flow meters have steadily increased.

The mobile nature of fishing activity entails dynamic spatial relations and dependencies between coastal communities and fishing grounds drawn by the movement of fishing vessels. Analysing these spatial relations is essential to allocate the socio-economic impact of the fishing activity into the relevant coastal communities. In addition, such spatial information gives the possibility, on the one hand, to assess the impacts from fisheries on the marine environment and, on the other, to manage competing uses of the sea space between different activities. In this paper, we use AIS data, which is individual vessels' positioning data, to examine the activity of the EU large-scale fishing fleets, their home ports, high intensity fishing areas (i.e., main fishing grounds), main ports and coastal communities involved.

RESUMEN

This paper develops a Square Root Unscented Kalman Filter (SRUKF) for performing video-rate visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) using a single camera. The conventional UKF has been proposed previously for SLAM, improving the handling of nonlinearities compared with the more widely used Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). However, no account was taken of the comparative complexity of the algorithms: In SLAM, the UKF scales as O(N;{3}) in the state length, compared to the EKF's O(N;{2}), making it unsuitable for video-rate applications with other than unrealistically few scene points. Here, it is shown that the SRUKF provides the same results as the UKF to within machine accuracy and that it can be reposed with complexity O(N;{2}) for state estimation in visual SLAM. This paper presents results from video-rate experiments on live imagery. Trials using synthesized data show that the consistency of the SRUKF is routinely better than that of the EKF, but that its overall cost settles at an order of magnitude greater than the EKF for large scenes.

A cDNA encoding a putative aquaporin was cloned from the ovaries of the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (Acari: Ixodidae). The encoded protein is most similar to the vertebrate aquaporin 9 protein family. Localization by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) shows expression in the gut and ovaries of adult females but not in the synganglion, Malpighian tubules, or salivary glands. Quantitative RT-PCR indicates that it is primarily expressed in the ovaries, with approximately 146 times more transcript than in the gut. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes, the aquaporin-like protein localized to the plasma membrane.

RESUMEN

The goal of risk management in the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice is to reduce the risk of care rendered to patients. Of all the elements of risk management, communication and documentation are two of the most important. Ensuring that a patient is truly educated about all facets of procedures to be performed and thoroughly documenting all aspects of the care that is rendered can greatly reduce the risk of claims. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons should practice these principles regularly and not wait for a claim to occur to teach them their benefits.

RESUMEN

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that modulates arousal and motivation in humans and animals. It plays a central role in the brain "reward" system. Its dysregulation is involved in several debilitating disorders such as addiction, depression, Parkinson's disease, and schizophrenia. Dopamine neurotransmission and its reuptake in extracellular space takes place with millisecond temporal and nanometer spatial resolution. Novel nanoscale electrodes are needed with superior sensitivity and improved spatial resolution to gain an improved understanding of dopamine dysregulation. We report on a scalable fabrication of dopamine neurochemical probes of a nanostructured glassy carbon that is smaller than any existing dopamine sensor and arrays of more than 6000 nanorod probes. We also report on the electrochemical dopamine sensing of the glassy carbon nanorod electrode. Compared with a carbon fiber, the nanostructured glassy carbon nanorods provide about 2× higher sensitivity per unit area for dopamine sensing and more than 5× higher signal per unit area at low concentration of dopamine, with comparable LOD and time response. These glassy carbon nanorods were fabricated by pyrolysis of a lithographically defined polymeric nanostructure with an industry standard semiconductor fabrication infrastructure. The scalable fabrication strategy offers the potential to integrate these nanoscale carbon rods with an integrated circuit control system and with other complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible sensors.

This paper describes a methodology that combines meta-population theory and stock assessment models to gain insights about spatial heterogeneity of the meta-population in an operational time frame. The methodology was tested with stochastic simulations for different degrees of connectivity between sub-populations and applied to two case studies, North Sea cod (Gadus morua) and Northeast Atlantic sardine (Sardina pilchardus). Considering that the biological components of a population can be partitioned into discrete spatial units, we extended this idea into a property of additivity of sub-population abundances. If the additivity results hold true for putative sub-populations, then assessment results based on sub-populations will provide information to develop and monitor the implementation of finer scale/local management. The simulation study confirmed that when sub-populations are independent and not too heterogeneous with regards to productivity, the sum of stock assessment model estimates of sub-populations' SSB is similar to the SSB estimates of the meta-population. It also showed that a strong diffusion process can be detected and that the stronger the connection between SSB and recruitment, the better the diffusion process will be detected. On the other hand it showed that weak to moderate diffusion processes are not easy to identify and large differences between sub-populations productivities may be confounded with weak diffusion processes. The application to North Sea cod and Atlantic sardine exemplified how much insight can be gained. In both cases the results obtained were sufficiently robust to support the regional analysis.

Intensive insulin therapy to control perioperative hyperglycemia has become the new standard of care for cardiac surgery patients. Although there are several published protocols for achieving tight glycemic control in the postoperative period, there are no such published protocols or even suggested methods for intraoperative control. At Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon, we have been using postoperative insulin infusions under study protocol since 1992 and have been using intravenous insulin to control intraoperative glucose levels since 1995. Over the past 12 years of tight intraoperative glycemic control with intravenous insulin, four distinct, equally effective methods of intraoperative insulin administration have evolved at our institution. All four have evolved in the hands of experienced cardiac anesthesiologists. Each of these anesthesiologists was faced with the daily task of individualizing patient therapy with the common goal of eliminating intraoperative hyperglycemia. In this article we will describe each of these four generalized methodologies to give the practicing anesthesiologist a starting point from which they can develop and hone their own technique further.

The recovery of structure from motion in real time over extended areas demands methods that mitigate the effects of computational complexity and arithmetical inconsistency. In this paper, we develop SCISM, an algorithm based on relative frame bundle adjustment, which splits the recovered map of 3D landmarks and keyframes poses so that the camera can continue to grow and explore a local map in real time while, at the same time, a bulk map is optimized in the background. By temporarily excluding certain measurements, it ensures that both maps are consistent, and by using the relative frame representation, new results from the bulk process can update the local process without disturbance. The paper first shows how to apply this representation to the parallel tracking and mapping (PTAM) method, a real-time bundle adjuster, and compares results obtained using global and relative frames. It then explains the relative representation's use in SCISM and describes an implementation using PTAM. The paper provides evidence of the algorithm's real-time operation in outdoor scenes, and includes comparison with a more conventional submapping approach.

Pork tissue samples that tested positive and negative by the Charm II tetracycline test screening method in the slaughter plant laboratory were tested with the modified AOAC International liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method 995.09 to determine the predictive value of the screening method at detecting total tetracyclines at 10 µg/kg of tissue, in compliance with Russian import regulations. There were 218 presumptive-positive tetracycline samples of 4,195 randomly tested hogs. Of these screening test positive samples, 83% (182) were positive, >10 µg/kg by LC-MS-MS; 12.8% (28) were false violative, greater than limit of detection (LOD) but <10 µg/kg; and 4.2% (8) were not detected at the LC-MS-MS LOD. The 36 false-violative and not-detected samples represent 1% of the total samples screened. Twenty-seven of 30 randomly selected tetracycline screening negative samples tested below the LC-MS-MS LOD, and 3 samples tested <3 µg/kg chlortetracycline. Results indicate that the Charm II tetracycline test is effective at predicting hogs containing >10 µg/kg total tetracyclines in compliance with Russian import regulations.

OMS National Insurance Company insures over 4700 oral and maxillofacial surgeons, 83% of the fellows and members of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The company has over 10,000 closed malpractice claims involving oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Data and trends involving infections that developed following elective surgical procedures and trends involving patients with preexisting odontogenic infections with adverse outcomes are well known to the company. Seven percent of the 10,000+ closed claims involve infections. Recognition and diagnosis of the infection leads to appropriate and timely treatment of infections. Delayed recognition, consultation, and referral leads to delay in the institution of appropriate treatment and can lead to adverse outcomes.

We report novel strategies to integrate block copolymer self-assembly with 193 nm water immersion lithography. These strategies employ commercially available positive tone chemically amplified photoresists to spatially encode directing information into precise topographical or chemical prepatterns for the directed self-assembly of block copolymers. Each of these methods exploits the advantageous solubility and thermal properties of polarity-switched positive tone photoresist materials. Precisely registered, sublithographic self-assembled structures are fabricated using these versatile integration schemes which are fully compatible with current optical lithography patterning materials, processes, and tooling.

We have cloned the fire ant glucose transporter 8 (GLUT8) cDNA providing the first molecular characterization of a GLUT8 in insects. Glucose is a poly-alcohol and, due to its high hydrophilicity, cannot move across cell membranes. GLUT8 is a putative facilitative transporter for the cellular import and export of glucose. The complete 2,974-bp cDNA encodes a 501-residue protein with a predicted molecular mass of 54.8 kDa. Transcripts were detected in the brain, midgut, hindgut, Malpighian tubule, fat body, ovary, and testis. The highest transcriptional expression was found in fat body. Northern blot analysis revealed different transcript sizes in mated queen brains, alate female ovaries, and male testes. We propose that four other sequences obtained from insect genome projects from the honey bee Apis mellifera (ENSAPMP00000006624), the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae (EAA11842), and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (AAQ23604 and AAM52591) are likely the orthologues of the fire ant GLUT8. Phylogenetic relationships in insect glucose transporters are presented.
