[Filtration angles in pseudophakic eyes]. / Katy przesaczania w oczach pseudofakijnych.

Examination of the filtration angle comprised 86 eyes with implanted artificial intraocular lenses in the 8th postoperative month. The evaluation detected in both groups the appearance of pigmentary deposits in the trabecular area, of circumferential anterior synechiae and of vascular proliferation of the circumference of the iris. In some patients with anterior chamber lenses were observed abnormalities in the position of the implant.

[Use of the Miragel acrylate sponge in severe eye burns caused by lime]. / Zastosowanie wszczepu gabki akrylowej Miragel w ciezkich oparzeniach narzadu wzroku wapnem.

One of complications of burns of the eye caused by lime are the conjunctival adhesions. Presented are 2 patients who were treated by strips of Miragel acrylate sponge implanted temporarily into the conjunctival sac. After 1 year of observation and removal of the implants the conjunctival sac showed to be free of adhesions with a free motility of the eye.

[Visual acuity and refraction in pseudophakia]. / Ostrosc wzroku i refrakcja w pseudofakii.

Visual acuity with correction was checked in 86 persons with anterior and posterior chamber lenses in various postoperative periods. In the majority of examines of both groups in the late postoperative period the visual acuity was correct. The results obtained in both groups of patients were compared. The causes of astigmatism detected in some cases were considered.

[Intraocular pressure in pseudophakic eyes]. / Cisnienie sródgalkowe w oczach pseudofakijnych.

The IOP was checked in 86 eyes with implanted intraocular lenses in various postoperative periods. There was no essential difference in the behaviour of the IOP in persons with anterior or posterior chamber lenses. Causes of secondary glaucoma appearing in some cases were considered.

[Fluorescein angiography of the iris in pseudophakia]. / Angiografia fluoresceinowa teczówki w pseudofakii.

Investigations were performed in a group of 16 patients after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular artificial lens. The authors evaluated the condition of the iris on the basis of a biomicroscopic examination and fluorescein angiography up to 1 year after surgery.

[Prognostic value of treatment trials used during the preoperative period in patients with primary retinal detachment]. / Wartosc prognostyczna próby lezenia stosowanej w okresie przedoperacyjnym u chorych z pierwotnym odwarstwieniem siatkówki.

Analysed are the results of surgical treatment and the methods applied in patients with primary retinal detachment who have been placed in recumbent position in the preoperative period. It was demonstrated that in all the cases in which after staying in bed one could observe a full or partial retinal re-apposition--a relatively simple and sparing operation was sufficient for a lasting cure. The presented results show that a successful outcome of the reclining position trial constitutes one of the favourable prognostic factors for the success of the surgical intervention.

[Extremely advanced basal cell carcinoma in periocular region: a case report]. / Skrajnie zaawansowana postac raka podstawnokomórkowego powiek--opis przypadku.

A case of extreme basal cell carcinoma affecting eyelids region in a 66-year old man is presented. Long time duration, large destruction of the face tissues and histopathological type of metatypic basal cell carcinoma (bcc) eliminated any way of therapy (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy). We present this case because bcc as localy invasive tumor with low growth, diagnosed and treated at early stage can lead to complete recovery.

[Bacterial flora in the conjunctival sac of patients before cataract surgery]. / Flora bakteryjna worka spojówkowego u chorych przygotowywanych do operacji zacmy.

Retrospective analysis of 2365 cultures from conjunctival sac of patients was done. The most frequent bacteria included Staphylococcus epidermidis (48.7%), Staphylococcus aureus (11%) and Streptococcus (1%). The sensibility of the bacterial cultures for the most frequently applied chemotherapeutics was evaluated. Our results were compared with those in the literature.

[Intraocular tamponade with SF6 gas in the treatment of selected cases of retinal detachment]. / Tamponada wewnatrzgalkowa gazem SF6 w leczeniu wybranych przypadków odwarstwien siatkówki.

The aim of this paper is to present the results of the endotamponade with SF6 gas in the treatment of 19 patients with retinal detachment. The cases selected for the surgery were characterised by the retinal tear situated in the upper part of the fundus of the eye or in the posterior pole with no symptoms of PVR phase C and D and vitreo-retinal traction. The indications for endotamponade, the causes of failures and the complications connected with this kind of surgery were discussed.

[Miragel in surgery of retinal detachment]. / Miragel w operacyjnym leczeniu odwarstwienia siatkówki.

The authors presented results of the surgical treatment of 33 patients with retinal detachment, in whom Miragel implants were used for scleral buckling. The studies have confirmed that Miragel is a very good material for retinal detachment surgery and its application on a larger scale is recommended.

[Clinical evaluation of Ocuflur]. / Ocena kliniczna preparatu Ocuflur.

Presented is the initial clinical evaluation of Ocuflur, a compound of Allergan. The influence of the drug on the size of the pupil and the reaction of the pupil to a light flash was tested in volunteer subjects. The efficacy of the drug was tested intraoperatively.

[Experimental studies on the usefulness of photodynamic method in diagnosis and treatment of melanoma]. / Badania doswiadczalne nad przydatnoscia metody fotodynamicznej w diagnostyce i leczeniu czerniaka.

The authors present results of experimental studies on the usefulness of hematoporphyrin and laser in diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors. An amelanotic Greene melanoma was implanted into anterior chamber of 10 rabbits. After administration of HpD the tumor was irradiated with laser light of wavelengths 406 nm for diagnosis and 630 nm for selective destruction of neoplastic cells. During follow-up the tumor was growing pale and its gradual shrinkage was observed. In histopathological examination multiple area of necrosis with total destruction of blood vessels were found.

[Experimental studies of using polyester-coated materials of Polish production in surgical treatment of retinal detachment]. / Badania doswiadczalne nad zastosowaniem materialów poliestrowych powlekanych produkcji polskiej w operacyjnym leczeniu odwarstwionej siatkówki.

The authors evaluated the tolerance of the rabbit eye to a new generation of polyester bands coated by polymethane polyester or by silicone. Investigations consisted on the application of episcleral implants made from polyester coated bands and--for comparison--of already well known polyester non-coated bands The eyes were removed on the 4th, 10th, 30th, 60th and 90th day after operation, macroscopically evaluated and fixed in formaline. The specimen were prepared from the spot of the applied implant together with a margin of surrounding tissues. Clinical observations, macroscopic evaluations as well as histopathological examinations showed a good tolerance of the silicone coated bands; it was discovered instead that the polyurethane coated bands are causing a more pronounced inflammatory reaction in the early postoperative period.

[Visual function in pseudophakia]. / Sprawnosc widzenia w pseudofakii.

Visual function of 33 pseudophakic eyes of 28 persons were examined and compared with control group of 27 persons without any changes in visual system. In pseudophakia there was a distinct decrease of mesopic vision and increased glare sensitivity. Color vision was not significant affected. The authors consider that only few professional drivers, engine drivers and pilots with pseudophakia would be able to get positive evaluation of visual function for further usefulness in their profession.

[Clinical and histopathological observations of retinal sutures. Preliminary report]. / Kliniczne i histopatologiczne obserwacje szwów siatkówkowych. Doniesienie wstepne.

One of the therapeutical methods in the great hole and ora serrata retinal detachment are the retino-scleral sutures. The study evaluates the tolerance of this type of stitches. Experimental investigations have been performed in rabbits with sutures of Ethilon 8-0 or chromic collagen 8-0 put through the sclera. Both segments--the anterior and posterior one have been taken under consideration. The eye have been enucleated on the 1st, 2d, 7th, 14th and 60th day after surgery and evaluated macroscopically. The specimen from the spot of stitching have been executed after fixation in formaline. Clinical observations, macroscopic evaluation of the enucleated eyes and results of the histopathological examination showed good tolerance of the retinal stitches through the tissue of the rabbits eye and indicate the possibility of a clinical utilization of this method.

[Oral acyclovir treatment of viral eye infections]. / Doustne leczenie acyclovirem wirusowych schorzen oczu.

Forty four patients with virus conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis and retinitis were treated by acyclovir in tablets--5 times a day 400 mg.; the results were satisfactory. The drug was well tolerated and it could be used also in patients who showed hypersensitivity for acyclovir after ++intra-conjunctival application in the form of ointment.

[Mixed tumor of the lacrimal gland]. / Guz mieszany gruczollu lzowego.

Presented is a case of a woman-patient with a mixed tumor of the lacrimal gland which grew to an infrequently seen size. The tumor was excised and identified as a non-malignant one. Three years after surgery came a renewed extensive expansion of the tumor. Exenteration of the orbit was performed and histopathological examination revealed a mixed malignant tumor of the gland.

[Incidence of hypersensitivity to antibiotics and preservatives in eye drops]. / Czestosc wystepowania uczulen na antybiotyki i srodki konserwujace w kroplach ocznych.

PURPOSE: To elaborate a set of contact allergens present in eye drops which could precipitate allergic conjunctivitis. Such set has not been yet described in literature. METHODS: Basing on the most frequently used preparations, a set of 15 different substances: drugs and preservatives, was prepared to test the patients. RESULTS: Among the 97 persons who underwent the testing, positive results were observed in 35.5%. The hypersensitivity was found for 11 of the allergens, the most often for neomycin, gentamycin, merthiolate, benzalkonium chloride, and then consecutively for kanamycin, sulfathiazole, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, penicillin, boric acid and parabens.

[Chemical analysis of compounds released after damage of the intraocular lens with the Nd: YAG laser]. / Chemiczna analiza uwalnianych zwiazków po uszkodzeniu sztucznej soczewki wewnatrzgalkowej laserem Nd: YAG.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the amount of releasing chemical compounds after laser Nd: YAG damage of PMMA intraocular lenses. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study was undertaken in vitro condition. In two chemical vials filled with aqua humor-like solution 7 intraocular lenses in each were installed. One vial was the control group. 500 exposures to the laser Nd: YAG were performed focusing the beam on intraocular lenses in second vial. The aqua humor-like solution was analysed by gas chromatography in period of 1, 5 and 10 weeks. RESULTS: Methylmethacrylate was present in vial with damaged intraocular lenses in the first week after laser exposition, the other chemical compounds were observed after this period. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Laser Nd: YAG provokes depolymerisation of PMMA to methylmethacrylate just in time when damaging factor occurs. 2. Methyl alcohol and formaldehyde present in a longer time after damage of PMMA are the products of methylmethacrylate reactions. 3. The amount of released chemical compounds is so small and seems not to have the toxic properties.

[Evaluation of usefulness for a new composition of gel for ultrasonographic diagnostic examination]. / Ocena przydatnosci zelu wlasnej kompozycji do diagnostycznych badan ultradzwiekowych.

A new composition of gel was applied in ultrasonographic diagnostic examinations. Estimation of gel was based on the following parameter--attenuation in dB per cm at varying frequency. Considering this parameter the newly composed gel was compared with gels used so far in diagnostics.
