RESUMEN
Review papers help researchers understand the direction and flow of research and help beginners quickly acquire relevant knowledge. Therefore, the review paper should describe only accurate contents and should be written with only core and important matters. Recently, Othmani et al. (2022) reviewed more than 200 papers related to the adsorptive removal of three harmful pollutants: toxic organics (phenols), anionic heavy metal (Cr(VI)) and cationic heavy metal (Cd(II)) by agricultural waste materials. However, Cr(VI)-related section of this review is missing something important that should be provided to the readers of this journal. In fact, the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by nonliving biomass including agricultural waste materials under acidic conditions is not a simple anion adsorption but a complex mechanism involving redox reaction called "adsorption-coupled reduction". Therefore, when interpreting the factors affecting Cr(VI) removal, it should be interpreted in terms of the redox reaction concept, not anion adsorption.

Burkholderia glumae, B. plantarii, and B. gladioli are responsible for serious diseases in rice crops and co-occurrence among them has been reported. In this study, in vitro assays revealed antagonistic activity among these organisms, with B. gladioli demonstrating strong inhibition of B. glumae and B. plantarii. Strains of B. glumae and B. plantarii that express green fluorescent protein were constructed and used for cocultivation assays with B. gladioli, which confirmed the strong inhibitory activity of B. gladioli. Cell-free supernatants from each species were tested against cultures of counterpart species to evaluate the potential to inhibit bacterial growth. To investigate the inhibitory activity of B. gladioli on B. glumae and B. plantarii in rice, rice plant assays were performed and quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays were developed for in planta bacterial quantification. The results indicated that coinoculation with B. gladioli leads to significantly reduced disease severity and colonization of rice tissues compared with single inoculation with B. glumae or B. plantarii. This study demonstrates the interactions among three rice-pathogenic Burkholderia species and strong antagonistic activity of B. gladioli in vitro and in planta. The qPCR assays developed here could be applied for accurate quantification of these organisms from in planta samples in future studies.

Hall-effect sensors are used to detect metal surface defects both experimentally and numerically. The gap between the specimen and the sensor, called the liftoff, is assumed to remain constant, while a slight misplacement of a sample may lead to incorrect measurements by the Hall-effect sensor. This paper proposes a numerical simulation method to mitigate the liftoff issue. Owing to the complexity of conducting precise finite-element analysis, rather than obtaining the induced current in the Hall sensor, only the magnetic flux leakage is obtained. Thus, to achieve a better approximation, a numerical method capable of obtaining the induced current density in the circumferential direction in terms of the inspection direction is also proposed. Signals of the conventional and proposed approximate numerical methods affected by the sensor liftoff variation were obtained and compared. For small liftoffs, both conventional and proposed numerical methods could identify notch defects, while as the liftoff increased, no defect could be identified using the conventional numerical method. Furthermore, experiments were performed using a variety of liftoff configurations. Based on the results, considering the threshold of the conventional numerical method, defects were detected for greater liftoffs, but misdetection did not occur.
RESUMEN
In this study, we aimed to design a coil sensor prototype capable of detecting metallic area loss based on numerical simulations using the magnetic flux leakage (MFL) method. Unlike previous numerical simulation-based studies, which are only conducted to obtain the MFL itself, the main objectives of this study were (1) to acquire the induced current in the coil sensor and (2) to optimize the apparatus based on a time-dependent numerical analysis. As a result, the optimum values of parameters in magnetizing and sensing units were obtained numerically. A magnetic sensor prototype was then fabricated using the optimum parameters obtained by numerical parametric study. Finally, experimental validation tests were conducted on a solid steel rod specimen with a stepwise cross-sectional reduction flaw. It was observed that numerical simulation had approximately 91% precision compared to the experimental test. The results reveal that application of a realistic numerical simulation of an MFL coil sensor can probably provide essential information for MFL-sensor fabrication and allows for preventive measures to be taken before manufacturing failure or defect misdetection.

By virtue of the advances in sensing techniques, finite element (FE) model updating (FEMU) using static and dynamic data has been recently employed to improve identification on updating parameters. Using heterogeneous data can provide useful information to improve parameter identifiability in FEMU. It is worth noting that the useful information from the heterogeneous data may be diluted in the conventional FEM framework. The conventional FEMU framework in previous studies have used heterogeneous data at once to compute residuals in the objective function, and they are condensed to be a scalar. In this implementation, it should be careful to formulate the objective function with proper weighting factors to consider the scale of measurement and relative significances. Otherwise, the information from heterogeneous data cannot be efficiently utilized. For FEMU of the bridge, parameter compensation may exist due to mutual dependence among updating parameters. This aggravates the parameter identifiability to make the results of the FEMU worse. To address the limitation of the conventional FEMU method, this study proposes a sequential framework for the FEMU of existing bridges. The proposed FEMU method uses two steps to utilize static and dynamic data in a sequential manner. By using them separately, the influence of the parameter compensation can be suppressed. The proposed FEMU method is verified through numerical and experimental study. Through these verifications, the limitation of the conventional FEMU method is investigated in terms of parameter identifiability and predictive performance. The proposed FEMU method shows much smaller variabilities in the updating parameters than the conventional one by providing the better predictions than those of the conventional one in calibration and validation data. Based on numerical and experimental study, the proposed FEMU method can improve the parameter identifiability using the heterogeneous data and it seems to be promising and efficient framework for FEMU of the existing bridge.

Kombucha tea (KT) has emerged as a substance that protects the liver from damage; however, its mechanisms of action on the fatty liver remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the potential role of KT and its underlying mechanisms on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). db/db mice that were fed methionine/choline-deficient (MCD) diets for seven weeks were treated for vehicle (M + V) or KT (M + K) and fed with MCD for four additional weeks. Histomorphological injury and increased levels of liver enzymes and lipids were evident in the M + V group, whereas these symptoms were ameliorated in the M + K group. The M + K group had more proliferating and less apoptotic hepatocytic cells than the M + V group. Lipid uptake and lipogenesis significantly decreased, and free fatty acid (FFA) oxidation increased in the M + K, when compared with the M + V group. With the reduction of hedgehog signaling, inflammation and fibrosis also declined in the M + K group. Palmitate (PA) treatment increased the accumulation of lipid droplets and decreased the viability of primary hepatocytes, whereas KT suppressed PA-induced damage in these cells by enhancing intracellular lipid disposal. These results suggest that KT protects hepatocytes from lipid toxicity by influencing the lipid metabolism, and it attenuates inflammation and fibrosis, which contributes to liver restoration in mice with NAFLD.

The use of activated sludge process for biological treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters generates large amounts of sewage sludge, which is regarded as problematic biowaste. Conventional waste treatment methods such as landfilling and ocean pumping have been used to dispose the unwanted sludge, but this practice is no longer recommended due to serious secondary pollution and strict environmental regulations. Hydrothermal treatment represents a promising alternative that has attracted attention in recent years. In this study, batch experiments of hydrothermal treatment of domestic sewage sludge were conducted under varying conditions (temperature of 150-300⯰C, reaction time of 0.5-3.0â¯h, and sludge concentration of 5-30â¯g/L). A statistical study of the responses, including disintegration degree and concentration of dissolved compounds, was performed using a response surface methodology. Optimal conditions for hydrothermal treatment of sewage sludge were obtained through mathematical modeling.

This paper proposes a self-sensing nonlinear ultrasonic technique for fatigue crack detection under temperature variations. Fatigue cracks are identified from linear (α) and nonlinear (ß) ultrasonic parameters recorded by a self-sensing piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The self-sensing PZT scheme minimizes the data acquisition system's inherent nonlinearity, which often prevents the identification of fatigue cracks. Also, temperature-dependent false alarms are prevented based on the different behaviors of α and ß. The proposed technique was numerically pre-validated with finite element method simulations to confirm the trends of α and ß with changing temperature, and then was experimentally validated using an aluminum plate with an artificially induced fatigue crack. These validation tests reveal that fatigue cracks can be detected successfully in realistic conditions of unpredictable temperature and that positive false alarms of 0.12% occur.
RESUMEN
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a known carcinogen in living organisms, and many studies have investigated Cr(VI) removal methods. Biosorption, one of the Cr(VI) removal methods, is dominated by chemical binding, ion exchange, physisorption, chelation and oxidation-reduction. Among these mechanisms, Cr(VI) can be removed by nonliving biomass through a redox reaction, which has been recognized as 'adsorption-coupled reduction'. Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) during biosorption, but there are no studies on the property and toxicity of the reduced-Cr(III). In this study, the harmfulness of reduced-Cr(III) was identified through assessment of mobility and toxicity in nature. Pine bark, a low-cost biomass, was used to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Reduced-Cr(III) was characterized by structural features using X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectra, mobility assessed using precipitation, adsorption and soil column test, and toxicity using radish sprouts and water flea. XANES analysis confirmed that reduced-Cr(III) has an unsymmetrical structure, and the reduced-Cr(III) showed low mobility and was virtually non-toxic, and helpful for plant growth. Our findings demonstrate that Cr(VI) biosorption technology using pine bark is a groundbreaking technology for Cr(VI) detoxification.

Rice (Oryzae sativa cv. dongjin) is a cornerstone of global food security; however, Burkholderia glumae BGR1, which is responsible for bacterial panicle blight (BPB), threatens its productive output, with dire consequences for rice and other crops. BPB is primarily caused by toxoflavin, a potent phytotoxin that disrupts plant growth at various developmental stages. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms through which toxoflavin and BPB affect rice plants is critical. Toxoflavin biosynthesis in B. glumae BGR1 relies on the toxABCDE operon, with ToxA playing a central role. In response to this threat, our study explores a metagenome-derived toxoflavin-degrading enzyme, TxeA, as a potential defense mechanism against toxoflavin's destructive impact. TxeA-induced degradation of toxoflavin represents a potential strategy to mitigate crop damage. We introduce a groundbreaking approach: engineering transgenic rice plants to produce toxoflavin-degrading enzymes. These genetically modified plants, armed with TxeA, hold significant potential for combating toxoflavin-related crop losses. However, removal of toxoflavin, a major virulence factor in B. glumae BGR1, does not completely inhibit virulence. This innovative perspective offers a new shift from pathogen eradication to leveraging transgenic plants' power, offering a beacon of hope for crop protection and disease management. Our study offers insights into the intricate interplay between toxoflavin, BPB, and TxeA, providing a promising avenue to safeguard rice crops, ensure food security, and potentially enhance the resilience of various agricultural crops to B. glumae BGR1-induced diseases.
RESUMEN
Plant bacterial disease is a complex outcome achieved through a combination of virulence factors that are activated during infection. However, the common virulence factors across diverse plant pathogens are largely uncharacterized. Here, we established a pan-genome shared across the following plant pathogens: Burkholderia glumae, Ralstonia solanacearum, and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. By overlaying in planta transcriptomes onto the pan-genome, we investigated the expression profiles of common genes during infection. We found over 70% of identical patterns for genes commonly expressed by the pathogens in different plant hosts or infection sites. Co-expression patterns revealed the activation of a signal transduction cascade to recognize and respond to external changes within hosts. Using mutagenesis, we uncovered a relationship between bacterial virulence and functions highly conserved and shared in the studied genomes of the bacterial phytopathogens, including flagellar biosynthesis protein, C4-dicarboxylate ABC transporter, 2-methylisocitrate lyase, and protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (PCD). In particular, the disruption of PCD gene led to attenuated virulence in all pathogens and significantly affected phytotoxin production in B. glumae. This PCD gene was ubiquitously distributed in most plant pathogens with high homology. In conclusion, our results provide cross-species in planta models for identifying common virulence factors, which can be useful for the protection of crops against diverse pathogens.

RESUMEN
Anaerobic digestion is the preferred method for treating sewage sludge because of its ability to reduce sludge volume and produce biogas. However, conventional anaerobic digestion has a long retention time and low degradation rate. In recent years, hydrothermal treatment has been used to improve the hydrolysis of sewage sludge and biogas production. This process tends to focus on maximizing biogas production. However, very little research has been done on anaerobic digestion residues. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of hydrothermal temperature on methane production and the contents of liquid fraction after anaerobic digestion (centrate). Experimental conditions were designed using a response surface method and central composite model. A quadratic equation was used to interpret the individual and interactive effects of hydrothermal conditions on anaerobic digestion. Given the maximum biogas production and the minimum concentrate concentration, the optimal operating condition was determined by a 186 °C hydrothermal temperature and a reaction time of 106 min. Under these conditions, the following results could be obtained: methane production (200.5 ± 7.7 mL-CH4/gVSadded), TCOD (16,572 ± 348 mg/L), sCOD (1240 ± 65 mg/L), sTN (658.9 ± 8.0 mg/L) and ammonia (525 ± 27 mg/L).

Burkholderia glumae are bacteria pathogenic to rice plants that cause a disease called bacterial panicle blight (BPB) in rice panicles. BPB, induced by B. glumae, causes enormous economic losses to the rice agricultural industry. B. glumae also causes bacterial disease in other crops because it has various virulence factors, such as toxins, proteases, lipases, extracellular polysaccharides, bacterial motility, and bacterial secretion systems. In particular, B. glumae BGR1 harbors type VI secretion system (T6SS) with functionally distinct roles: the prokaryotic targeting system and the eukaryotic targeting system. The functional activity of T6SS requires 13 core components and T6SS accessory proteins, such as adapters containing DUF2169, DUF4123, and DUF1795 domains. There are two genes, bglu_1g23320 and bglu_2g07420, encoding the DUF2169 domain-containing protein in the genome of B. glumae BGR1. bglu_2g07420 belongs to the gene cluster of T6SS group_5 in B. glumae BGR1, whereas bglu_1g23320 does not belong to any T6SS gene cluster in B. glumae BGR1. T6SS group_5 of B. glumae BGR1 is involved in bacterial virulence in rice plants. The DUF2169 domain-containing protein with a single domain can function by itself; however, Δu1g23320 showed no attenuated virulence in rice plants. In contrast, Δu2g07420DUF2169 and Δu2g07420PPR did exhibit attenuated virulence in rice plants. These results suggest that the pentapeptide repeats region of the C-terminal additional domain, as well as the DUF2169 domain, is required for complete functioning of the DUF2169 domain-containing protein encoded by bglu_2g07420. bglu_2g07410, which encodes the pentapeptide repeats protein, composed of only the pentapeptide repeats region, is located downstream of bglu_2g07420. Δu2g07410 also shows attenuated virulence in rice plants. This finding suggests that the pentapeptide repeats protein, encoded by bglu_2g07410, is involved in bacterial virulence. This study is the first report that the DUF2169 domain-containing protein and pentapeptide repeats protein are involved in bacterial virulence to the rice plants as T6SS accessory proteins, encoded in the gene cluster of the T6SS group_5.
RESUMEN
In this study, two bacterial strains, IRP7 and IRP8, were selected to induce resistance against pine wilt disease (PWD). Foliar application with these strains to nematode-inoculated pine seedlings significantly reduced PWD severity. The effect of nematode inoculation and bacterial treatment on the rhizosphere bacterial community was investigated. The results indicated that the rhizosphere of nematode-inoculated seedlings contained a lower relative abundance of beneficial microbes such as Paraburkholderia, Bradyrhizobium, Rhizobacter, Lysobacter, and Caballeronia. Bacterial treatment resulted in significant changes in the microbes that were represented in relatively low relative abundance. Treatment with IRP7 resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of Nitrospirillum, Bacillus, and Luteibacter, which might be useful for protection against infection. Treatment with IRP8 resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of obligate bacterial predators of the Bdellovibrio genus that were previously shown to control several bacterial phytopathogens and may have a role in the management of nematode-carried bacteria. The selected bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas koreensis IRP7 and Lysobacter enzymogenes IRP8 and are suggested as a potential treatment for induced resistance against PWD. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the effect of foliar treatment with resistance-inducing bacteria on the rhizosphere microbiota.
RESUMEN
Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the pinewood nematode, is the most destructive disease in pine forest ecosystems worldwide. Extensive research has been done on PWD, but effective disease management is yet to be devised. Generally, plants can resist pathogen attack via a combination of constitutive and inducible defenses. Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is an inducible defense that occurs by the localized infection of pathogens or treatment with elicitors. To manage PWD by SAR in pine trees, we tested previously known 12 SAR elicitors. Among them, methyl salicylate (MeSA) was found to induce resistance against PWD in Pinus densiflora seedlings. In addition, the foliar applications of the dispersible concentrate-type formulation of MeSA (MeSA 20 DC) and the emulsifiable concentrate-type formulation of MeSA (MeSA 20 EC) resulted in significantly reduced PWD in pine seedlings. In the field test using 10-year-old P. densiflora trees, MeSA 20 DC showed a 60% decrease in the development of PWD. Also, MeSA 20 EC gave the best results when applied at 0.1 mM concentration 2 and 1 weeks before pinewood nematode (PWN) inoculation in pine seedlings. qRT-PCR analysis confirmed that MeSA induced the expression of defense-related genes, indicating that MeSA can inhibit and delay the migration and reproduction of PWN in pine seedlings by modulating gene expression. These results suggest that foliar application of MeSA could reduce PWD incidence by inducing resistance and provide an economically feasible alternative to trunk-injection agents for PWD management.
RESUMEN
Bakanae disease is a fungal disease of rice (Oryza sativa L.) caused by the pathogen Gibberella fujikuroi (also known as Fusarium fujikuroi). This study was carried out to identify novel quantitative trait loci (QTLs) from an indica variety Zenith. We performed a QTL mapping using 180 F2:9 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between the resistant variety, Zenith, and the susceptible variety, Ilpum. A primary QTL study using the genotypes and phenotypes of the RILs indicated that the locus qBK1z conferring bakanae disease resistance from the Zenith was located in a 2.8 Mb region bordered by the two RM (Rice Microsatellite) markers, RM1331 and RM3530 on chromosome 1. The log of odds (LOD) score of qBK1z was 13.43, accounting for 30.9% of the total phenotypic variation. A finer localization of qBK1z was delimited at an approximate 730 kb interval in the physical map between Chr01_1435908 (1.43 Mbp) and RM10116 (2.16 Mbp). Introducing qBK1z or pyramiding with other previously identified QTLs could provide effective genetic control of bakanae disease in rice.
RESUMEN
In this study, a new recirculation column reactor system for arsenate removal using a polyethylenimine coated bacterial biosorbent was developed. Solution pH was the most important factor in process design and operation. In order to control and optimize solution pH favorable for arsenate removal, a pH control and recirculation system was added to a column reactor. The effects of recycle ratio, initial arsenate concentration, and flow rate on the arsenate removal performance of the developed process were examined. Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were used to interpret the breakthrough curve of arsenate removal. The maximum arsenate adsorption amount of the new reactor was determined to be 50.86 mg/g by the Thomas model. Importantly, the new reactor showed unimpeded adsorption performance compared with that in the batch experiments. The desorption study also showed excellent reusability. The results indicated that the newly developed process could be a promising application prospect for removing arsenate.

Type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a contact-dependent secretion system, employed by most gram-negative bacteria for translocating effector proteins to target cells. The present study was conducted to investigate T6SS in Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), which causes bacterial blight in rice, and to unveil its functions. Two T6SS clusters were found in the genome of Xoo PXO99A. The deletion mutants, Δhcp1, Δhcp2, and Δhcp12, targeting the hcp gene in each cluster, and a double-deletion mutant targeting both genes were constructed and tested for growth rate, pathogenicity to rice, and inter-bacterial competition ability. The results indicated that hcp in T6SS-2, but not T6SS-1, was involved in bacterial virulence to rice plants. However, neither T6SS-1 nor T6SS-2 had any effect on the ability to compete with Escherichia coli or other bacterial cells. In conclusion, T6SS gene clusters in Xoo have been characterized, and its role in virulence to rice was confirmed.
RESUMEN
Pine wilt disease (PWD) caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a major threat to pine forests worldwide. Induction of resistance is a promising and safe management option that should be investigated in relation to its possible influence on the pine tree ecosystem, including the surrounding microbial communities. In this study, two main resistance-inducing chemical elicitors, methyl salicylic acid (MeSA) and acibenzolar-s-methyl (ASM), were tested for their control efficiency against PWD and their influence on the rhizosphere microbial composition. Foliar treatment of pine seedlings with the chemical elicitors resulted in a reduction in PWD severity, with ASM showing better control efficacy, reaching up to 73% compared to the untreated control. Moreover, bacterial community analysis of the rhizosphere revealed significant changes in several microbial taxa that were present at low relative abundance. In particular, ASM treatment resulted in a significant increase in specific microbial taxa, including members of the Rhodanobacter, Devosia, Bradyrhizobium, Acidibacter, Mesorhizobium, and Hyphomicrobium genera, which are known to play ecological and plant growth-promoting roles. Furthermore, chitinolytic bacteria were shown to be reduced in response to treatment with both MeSA and ASM. Altogether, the present findings demonstrate the occurrence of significant alterations in several ecologically important microbial taxa after treatment with resistance-inducing chemicals. As compared to MeSA treatment, ASM treatment was more effective at suppressing PWD and resulted in more beneficial changes in rhizosphere microbial composition.
