PIP: The author attempts to use the Gompertz-Makeham curve to smooth age-specific mortality data without methodological errors or simplification. He also calculates an estimate of the inaccuracy of the statistical data used and evaluates the quality of this estimate. The data concern the mortality of Czechoslovak men aged 60-87 during the 1960s. The result of the calculations are compared with the results obtained by Cramer and Wold for Sweden. PIP: The author assesses the use of a modified Gompertz-Makeham model to measure mortality above age 85 in the Czech Republic. "This curve corresponds very well with the empirical data for ages of 85-95 years not only for the Czech but even for the West-European populations.... At the end of the Eighties and during the Nineties mortality decrease of 80 years old and above has significantly accelerated; at...this rate we should reach the European level in about 10 years. PIP: This is a collection of short papers presented at a conference held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1991. The focus of the conference was on the demographic changes that have occurred in Czechoslovakia since World War II and their relationship to such changes in the rest of Europe and elsewhere in the world. Essay topics include fertility trends; contraceptive prevalence, including abortion rates; living standards and health care; and changes in the age structure.
