RESUMEN

Of the 202 species of Chamaeleonidae, 38.6% are globally threatened. Currently, nearly a thousand individual chameleons from 36 different species are kept in zoological institutions worldwide. The objectives of this study were to assess the main mortality causes of chameleons in zoological institutions, the prevalence of renal lesions at necropsy, and the environmental factors associated with renal lesions. An online survey was sent to 245 zoological institutions worldwide to collect information about species and sex distribution, necropsy results, and husbandry parameters. Necropsy reports of the last 10 yr were requested from participating institutions (n = 65) when available. Mortality causes were classified into three categories (open diagnosis, infectious, and noninfectious), and noninfectious causes were further subdivided into seven categories (renal, reproductive, myoarthroskeletal, digestive, ophthalmologic, denutrition/multisystemic, and neoplastic). The prevalence of renal lesions was recorded. Multiple linear regression models were used with the prevalence of renal diseases as the dependent variable, and exhibit minimum and maximum hygrometry; exhibit highest and coolest temperature; as well as minimum, mean, and maximum hygrometry of the geographical area as independent variables, combining all chameleon species with similar environmental requirements. Results were obtained for 14 species (n = 412 individuals). The main mortality causes were infectious (46.8%), noninfectious renal (11.4%), and noninfectious reproductive (10.7%) diseases, with all cases of fatal reproductive diseases reported in females. Of the individuals that underwent renal histopathology, 41.7% displayed renal lesions. There was a tendency towards higher renal lesion prevalence in zoos located in areas with lower mean hygrometry (P = 0.05). Further research studies about infectious, renal, and reproductive diseases of Chamaeleonidae are warranted.

RESUMEN

A 10-year-old pet chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) was referred for ultrasound investigation of a thoracic mass. The mass was initially believed to be a pulmonary abscess or tumor based on radiographs and ultrasound. Cytological examination suggested the presence of a gastrointestinal structure in the thorax, and necropsy revealed a true diaphragmatic hernia subdividing the stomach into thoracic and abdominal portions.

A 5-year-old, 3.72-kg female Pekin duck ( Anas platyrhynchos domestica) was presented for acute respiratory distress, head shaking, and collapse. Similar spontaneously resolving episodes had previously occurred. Physical examination revealed severe inspiratory and expiratory dyspnea. Due to poor prognosis, euthanasia was elected. Postmortem examination revealed severe tracheal collapse involving the proximal trachea. The tracheal lumen was reduced in size by 75%. Histologic evaluation revealed ossification of the tracheal rings for approximately 60%-100% of their circumference. The bone trabecules presented characteristics of mature bone with a medullar cavity containing hematopoietic cells and adipocytes. There was also osseous metaplasia of the cartilage. In the lamina propria, there was lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis, both moderate. To our knowledge, tracheal collapse has not been reported in a Pekin Duck.

RESUMEN

A 16-year-old, male, neutered cat had a 2.5 X 1.5 cm mass on the medial aspect of the right carpus. Cytologic examination of a fine-needle aspirate of the mass indicated a markedly pleomorphic population of plasmacytoid to histiocytic-appearing cells. The cytologic diagnosis was malignant neoplasia of probable mesenchymal or round cell origin. The right forelimb was surgically removed and the scapular, axillary, and prescapular lymph nodes were excised. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma was tentatively diagnosed histologically; however, the tumor cells subsequently were found to be negative for histiocytic (MAC 387, antitrypsin), T-cell (CD3), and B-lymphocyte (immunoglobulin light chains, Ly 5/CD45R) markers, and positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, and S-100. Based on the immunohistochemical results, the diagnosis was modified to malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (PNST). Six months after surgery, the cat was reported to be well and had no evidence of metastasis. PNSTs are rare tumors in cats, and are considered as synonymous with schwannomas, neurofibrosarcomas, and hemangiopericytomas. In this cat, the plasmacytoid and pleomorphic appearance of the PNSTcells in cytologic and histologic specimens was unusual, and made it difficult to reach an accurate diagnosis without immunocytochemistry.

RESUMEN

A case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in a captive 4-month-old Arctic wolf (Canis lupus) is described. The animal had vomiting, anorexia, and ataxia before death. Histopathology revealed multifocal severe renal lymphoplasmacytic vasculitis, mostly affecting small arterioles, with fibrinoid degeneration of some vessel walls. Many small foci of gliosis were detected in the cerebral cortex. West Nile virus was demonstrated in the kidneys and cerebrum by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction. The described renal changes represent a novel pathological finding of WNV infection.

RESUMEN

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old Holstein cow was examined because of chronic lameness and swelling near the stifle joint of the left pelvic limb. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A mass was palpated in the soft tissues lateral to the proximal aspect of the left tibia. Multiple attempts to obtain a biopsy specimen of the mass resulted in acute compartment syndrome of the femoral compartment (tensor fasciae latae and biceps femoris muscles) and lateral tibial compartment (cranial tibial and peroneus tertius muscles) with associated sciatic nerve paralysis. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Surgical decompression via tensor fasciae latae and biceps femoris incision resolved the sciatic nerve paralysis. On the fifth day following surgery, the cow began to develop signs of increased respiratory effort. Thoracic radiography revealed a pulmonary metastatic micronodular pattern. The cow was euthanized because its condition deteriorated. Metastatic hemangiosarcoma was confirmed at necropsy, and the primary tumor was the mass that was lateral to the tibia and within the biceps femoris muscle. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hemangiosarcoma should be considered a differential diagnosis for lameness in cattle when no orthopedic cause can be identified. Close patient surveillance is strongly recommended in the event that a vascular tumor is present because catastrophic consequences are possible. To our knowledge, this is the first report of acute compartment syndrome in a pelvic limb of a bovine patient and the only report of hemangiosarcoma in the skeletal muscle of cattle.
