RESUMEN

The non-equilibrium control of emergent phenomena in solids is an important research frontier, encompassing effects such as the optical enhancement of superconductivity. Nonlinear excitation of certain phonons in bilayer copper oxides was recently shown to induce superconducting-like optical properties at temperatures far greater than the superconducting transition temperature, Tc (refs 4-6). This effect was accompanied by the disruption of competing charge-density-wave correlations, which explained some but not all of the experimental results. Here we report a similar phenomenon in a very different compound, K3C60. By exciting metallic K3C60 with mid-infrared optical pulses, we induce a large increase in carrier mobility, accompanied by the opening of a gap in the optical conductivity. These same signatures are observed at equilibrium when cooling metallic K3C60 below Tc (20 kelvin). Although optical techniques alone cannot unequivocally identify non-equilibrium high-temperature superconductivity, we propose this as a possible explanation of our results.

RESUMEN

In this work, we theoretically study the transduction of orbital angular momentum (OAM) l for infrared pump lasers into the THz domain. In the case of optical rectification, the transduction of OAM occurs only through a spin-orbit interaction, with the selection rule on the OAM l=0 valid for any kind of polarization of the pump, which means that there is no transfer of OAM along the propagation axis. In difference frequency generation, the selection rule for the difference Δl between the OAM of the pump fields with linear or circular polarization is l=Δl, whereas l ranges from Δl-2 to Δl+2 in cases of both radial and azimuthal polarization. Moreover, for THz generation in the latter case, the high diffraction obtained with tightly focused pumps yields l tending to Δl±2, while l tends to zero in the opposite case of large pump beams.

RESUMEN

Light can be strongly confined in subwavelength spatial regions through the interaction with plasmons, the collective electronic modes appearing in metals and semiconductors. This confinement, which is particularly important in the terahertz spectral region, amplifies light-matter interaction and provides a powerful mechanism for efficiently generating nonlinear optical phenomena. These effects are particularly relevant in graphene and topological insulators, where massless Dirac fermions show a naturally nonlinear optical behavior in the terahertz range. The strong interaction scenario has been considered so far from the point of view of light. In this Letter, we investigate instead the effect of strong interaction on the plasmon itself. In particular, we will show that Dirac plasmons in Bi_{2}Se_{3} topological insulator are strongly renormalized when excited by high-intensity terahertz radiation by displaying a huge red-shift down to 60% of its characteristic frequency. This opens the road towards tunable terahertz nonlinear optical devices based on topological insulators.

RESUMEN

Terahertz (THz) radiation is of great interest for a variety of applications, e.g., particle accelerations, spectroscopy investigations of quantum systems, and high-field study of materials. One of the most common laser-based processes to produce THz pulses is optical rectification, which transduces an infrared pump laser to the THz domain (0.1-20 THz). In this work, we propose and theoretically describe a method to characterize the amplitude and phase of the electric field of the pump laser pulse relying on THz generation and detection. We demonstrate with a numerical example how THz radiation can be used as diagnostics to characterize laser pulses with temporal length at the femtosecond level.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Hospital infections, or "healthcare associated infections" (HAI) represent the most common and serious complications of healthcare. Adoption of safe care practices able to prevent or control the transmission of infections, both in hospitals and in other healthcare settings is crucial. The aim of the study is to assess the awareness about the risk factors and the most effective measures of prevention of HAI in the University of Ferrara nursing school students, giving particular attention to the hand hygiene practices and the use of standard precautions. METHODS: 339 students attending all the three years of course of the same academic year were enrolled. An anonymous questionnaire was administered in order to investigate the knowledge about three specific areas: infections associated with healthcare practices (HAI), standard precautions (SP) and hand hygiene (HH). RESULTS: A sufficient level of knowledge by all the three groups of students was observed only in the SP area. A barely sufficient score was reached only by the third year students with regard to the proper HH. The level of knowledge about HAI was inadequate. CONCLUSIONS: A periodically check of nursing students' knowledge would be advisable in order to fill any gaps, improve training, reduce HAI and increase prevention measures compliance.

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: This single-masked, randomized and six-month clinical intervention trial including two study groups was planned to evaluate the efficacy of maintenance treatment with glycine powder on the periodontal health of peri-implant tissues. METHODS: A total of 46 patients with partial or total edentulism, carrying a total of 88 implants, were assigned either to an air abrasive with the glycine powder treatment group (AAD) or to a manual debridement and clorexidine administration treatment group (MDA). Clinical data were collected before treatment and at 3 and 6 months after the treatment. Plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BOP), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding score (BS) were analysed. RESULTS: After 3 months, AAD treatment statistically significantly improved BS (P < 0.05); at 6 months, AAD treatment statistically significantly improved indexes PD, PI, BOP and BS (P < 0.05). In addition, the AAD treatment proved to be more effective than MDA in maintaining the peri-implant health of PD at three and 6 months, and of PI at 6 months (P < 0.05). There were no significant changes of CAL in both groups, and all the indexes remained within the physiological levels. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of the study, treatment with glycine seems appropriate in the maintenance of peri-implant health and more effective than the traditional treatment with plastic curette and chlorhexidine.

RESUMEN

Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the first band dispersions and distinct features of the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic metallic phase of the prototypical metal-insulator transition material V_{2}O_{3}. Along the c axis we observe both an electron pocket and a triangular holelike FS topology, showing that both V 3d a_{1g} and e_{g}^{π} states contribute to the FS. These results challenge the existing correlation-enhanced crystal field splitting theoretical explanation for the transition mechanism and pave the way for the solution of this mystery.

RESUMEN

We have studied the optical properties of four (LaNiO3)n/(LaMnO3)2 superlattices (SL) (n=2,3,4,5) on SrTiO3 substrates. We have measured the reflectivity at temperatures from 20 to 400 K, and extracted the optical conductivity through a fitting procedure based on a Kramers-Kronig consistent Lorentz-Drude model. With increasing LaNiO3 thickness, the SLs undergo an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) that is accompanied by the transfer of spectral weight from high to low frequency. The presence of a broad midinfrared band, however, shows that the optical conductivity of the (LaNiO3)n/(LaMnO3)2 SLs is not a linear combination of the LaMnO_{3} and LaNiO3 conductivities. Our observations suggest that interfacial charge transfer leads to an IMT due to a change in valence at the Mn and Ni sites.

RESUMEN

We present an experimental and theoretical study exploring surface effects on the evolution of the metal-insulator transition in the model Mott-Hubbard compound Cr-doped V{2}O{3}. We find a microscopic domain formation that is clearly affected by the surface crystallographic orientation. Using scanning photoelectron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, we find that surface defects act as nucleation centers for the formation of domains at the temperature-induced isostructural transition and favor the formation of microscopic metallic regions. A density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory study of different surface terminations shows that the surface reconstruction with excess vanadyl cations leads to doped, and hence more metallic, surface states, which explains our experimental observations.

RESUMEN

The combination of amino acid anions with the choline cation gives origin to a new and potentially important class of organic ionic liquids that might represent a viable and bio-compatible alternative with respect to the traditional ones. We present here a detailed study of the bulk phase of the prototype system composed of the simplest amino acid (alanine) anion and the choline cation, based on ab initio and classical molecular dynamics. Theoretical findings have been validated by comparing with accurate experimental X-ray diffraction data and infrared spectra. We find that hydrogen bonding (HB) features in these systems are crucial in establishing their local geometric structure. We have also found that these HBs once formed are persistent and that the proton resides exclusively on the choline cation. In addition, we show that a classical force field description for this particular ionic liquid can be accurately performed by using a slightly modified version of the generalized AMBER force field.

RESUMEN

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL) are neuroendocrine tumors characterized by the excessive production of catecholamines. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of PPGL cases in Argentina over recent decades. A multicenter retrospective cross-sectional analysis was carried out using a database comprising both pediatric and adult patients with confirmed PPGL diagnoses based on pathological reports. A cohort of 486 patients with PPGL was recruited. Women represent 58.4% of the patients, with a mean age of 38.3 years old at the time of diagnosis and 15.2% of the patients were under the age of 18. Hypertension, as well as classic signs and symptoms, were present in 80.9% of the patients. The adrenal incidentaloma, as a mode of presentation, increased in the last two decades rising from 3.9% (1953-2000) to 21.8% (2001-2022), p<0.001. Most tumors were located within the adrenal glands, accounting 83.0% of the cases, with bilateral occurrences noted in 20.0%. The median tumor size was 4.8cm. Local recurrence and metastases were observed in 10.9% and 12.2%. Out of 412 patients, 87.0% exhibited urinary excretion elevation of catecholamines and/or their metabolites. Furthermore, 148 patients, representing 30.4% of the study population, displayed a distinct genetic profile indicative of hereditary syndromes. The distribution of hereditary syndromes revealed that MEN2, VHL, and PGL4 constituted the most prevalent syndromes. This population-based study, spanning seven decades, offers valuable insights into the demographic and clinical characteristics of PPGL patients in Argentina.

RESUMEN

The optical properties of a GaTa(4)Se(8) single crystal are investigated under high pressure. At ambient pressure, the optical conductivity exhibits a charge gap of ≈0.12 eV and a broad midinfrared band at ≈0.55 eV. As pressure is increased, the low energy spectral weight is strongly enhanced and the optical gap is rapidly filled, pointing to an insulator to metal transition around 6 GPa. The overall evolution of the optical conductivity demonstrates that GaTa(4)Se(8) is a Mott insulator which undergoes a bandwidth-controlled Mott metal-insulator transition under pressure, in remarkably good agreement with theory. With the use of our optical data and ab initio band structure calculations, our results were successfully compared to the (U/D, T/D) phase diagram predicted by dynamical mean field theory for strongly correlated systems.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study is to determine awareness about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their prevention in people aged 14-19 of Ferrara and province. The study was carried out using a self-administered standardised anonymous questionnaire in a sample of students attending to three upper secondary schools. Total number of collected questionnaires was 2695, the average age of interviewed was 17.1. Only 52.3% of respondents correctly recognized STD definition. Over 95% of subjects identified acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), while properly classification of Hepatitis B increased with age and lowest degree of knowledge concerned herpes infection and Candidiasis. Sex without condom (95.97%) and needle exchange in drugs abusers (94.9%) are considered high risk behaviours. 80.3% of interviewed, without distinction of school attendance, sex, and age considered lack of information as a situation of high risk. Condoms are not used by 46.4% of the subjects in case of sex with a regular partner and by 9.5% with casual partner. Majority of students declared condoms very safe in preventing STDs but an important percentage indicated also contraception methods; correct answers were higher among females and increased with age. Main sources of information were TV (21.6%), school (21.1%) and friends (14.8%) and a few sought information from family doctor (7.4%) and web (4.8%). The study suggests, as priority, to improve teenagers' awareness about risk behaviours and prevention of STDs. School can play an important role in reinforcement of sexual education programmes and directing young people to general practitioners and primary sexual health care services.

RESUMEN

The optical conductivity σ(ω) and the spectral weight W(T) of two superconducting cuprates at optimum doping, Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, have been first measured up to 500 K. Above 300 K, W(T) deviates from the usual T2 behavior in both compounds, even though σ(ω→0) remains larger than the Ioffe-Regel limit. The deviation is surprisingly well described by the T4 term of the Sommerfeld expansion, but its coefficients are enhanced by strong correlation, as shown by the good agreement with dynamical mean field calculations.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this comparative study was to analyze cytopathologically and chemico-physically the mucosa surrounding oral piercing to correlate results with adverse tissue signs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tongue superficial mucosa of 15 young subjects (control group) and the superficial mucosa surrounding oral piercing of 15 young subjects (test group, TG) were smeared on slides, Papanicolaou stained and analyzed under the optical microscope. Some smears were prepared for (back-scattered) scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis to study piercing fragments. RESULTS: Smears of TG displayed a variable extent of bacterial cytolysis of epithelial cells, fungi, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, granulocyte infiltration, calcium formations and bacterial flora; the four last statistically significant (P < 0.05). Foreign bodies surrounded by keratinocytes were detected under both light and SEM. X-ray microanalyses highlighted piercing alloy aggression, ion release and an inverse gradient of ion concentration inside keratinocytes. CONCLUSIONS: The pathological findings in smears correlated with adverse effects of oral piercing. Ion release may be related to direct toxic effects and belated reactions because of metal sensitization. A strict regulation of piercing is warranted.

RESUMEN

AIM: Antibiotic prophylaxis in surgical implants has not a consensus in the scientific world. This is due both to reports and statistical studies with contradictory results, both to the risk of severe anaphylactic reactions and the emergence of antibiotic resistance and, finally, to the lack of published RCTs. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively analyze and assess the success of surgical therapy with endosseous implants inserted under antibiotic prophylaxis at the Department of Oral Sciences "S. Palazzi", University of Pavia. The data presented are compared to those published in international literature. The work is complemented by a statistical data analysis in order to propose a statistically valid judgement on the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing postoperative infections. METHODS: Retrospective observational study with an average follow-up of 4.5 months, until the abutment connection. Furthermore, after extensive review of the literature, published data are compared with what retrieved in our department. Patients operated consecutively from June 2002 to December 2007. Review of literature data concerning the influence of antibiotic prophylaxis on the implant success. RESULTS: The data relating to post-operative complications encountered at the Division of Oral Surgery, University of Pavia and the comparison with those presented in the bibliography indicate statistically significant differences in favor of the antibiotic prophylaxis used in our department. CONCLUSION: There were no anaphylactic reactions recorded. It seems advisable to perform implantology with prophylactic antibiotic coverage.

RESUMEN

Regulations for the commercialization of new disinfectants in Europe are currently going through a transition phase. Up to the present time these were set down by each member State of the European Union while in May 2010 a single European set of regulations (Directive 98/8/CE) will become effective in all Member States, the main aspects of which are discussed in this paper. In particular, we discuss the main points regarding studies and other information to be submitted for obtaining approval of new active substances and for reviewing products already in the market.

RESUMEN

We present here a small-scale liquid helium immersion cryostat with an innovative optical setup suitable to work in long wavelength radiation ranges and under an applied magnetic field. The cryostat is a multi-stage device with several shielding in addition to several optical stages. The system has been designed with an external liquid nitrogen boiler to reduce liquid bubbling. The optical and mechanical properties of the optical elements were calculated and optimized for the designed configuration, while the optical layout has been simulated and optimized among different configurations based on the geometry of the device. The final design has been optimized for low-noise radiation measurements of proximity junction arrays under an applied magnetic field in the wavelength range λ = 250 µm-2500 µm.

RESUMEN

Mutagenic properties of terpenes (both synthesis and plant derived) have been tested, up to now, as a single molecule. A terpenes containing hydro-alcoholic solution deriving from frankincense and myrrh resins and hyssop essential oil was assayed for mutagenicity by means of ames test. Extraction technique conducted with electromagnetic fields at room temperature enabled to obtain a solution of free active molecules that did not undergo thermal degradation and characterized by biocidal activity. In order to verify lack of mutagenic hazard in coming into contact with human, the solution was appropriately diluted and tested with Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA1535 and YG1024 strains, both in absence and in presence of metabolic system S9. For none of the tested conditions a 2-fold increase of induced revertants, as regards to spontaneous, was registered. The ratio between induced and spontaneous His+ revertants (Mutagenic Index) was around 1.00 in all the determinations and no statistically significant differences have been identified comparing the sample and the negative control. A similar result has been obtained for the dose-response curve. In conclusion, we verified that tested terpenes solution lacks of mutagenicity on Salmonella typhimurium with and without metabolic activator so this plant extract can be safely used as biocide.
