RESUMEN

In this paper, genomics and precision medicine have witnessed remarkable progress with the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies and advances in data analytics. However, because of the data's great dimensionality and complexity, the processing and interpretation of large-scale genomic data present major challenges. In order to overcome these difficulties, this research suggests a novel Intelligent Mutation-Based Evolutionary Optimization Algorithm (IMBOA) created particularly for applications in genomics and precision medicine. In the proposed IMBOA, the mutation operator is guided by genome-based information, allowing for the introduction of variants in candidate solutions that are consistent with known biological processes. The algorithm's combination of Differential Evolution with this intelligent mutation mechanism enables effective exploration and exploitation of the solution space. Applying a domain-specific fitness function, the system evaluates potential solutions for each generation based on genomic correctness and fitness. The fitness function directs the search toward ideal solutions that achieve the problem's objectives, while the genome accuracy measure assures that the solutions have physiologically relevant genomic properties. This work demonstrates extensive tests on diverse genomics datasets, including genotype-phenotype association studies and predictive modeling tasks in precision medicine, to verify the accuracy of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that, in terms of precision, convergence rate, mean error, standard deviation, prediction, and fitness cost of physiologically important genomic biomarkers, the IMBOA consistently outperforms other cutting-edge optimization methods.

BACKGROUND: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder causing abdominal pain, altered bowel habits and bloating without structural issues. Gallbladder dysfunction may be linked to IBS due to disrupted cholecystokinin release. This study aims to assess gallbladder function and related hemodynamic parameters using Doppler ultrasound in IBS before and after meals. METHOD: In this case-control study, we investigated gallbladder function differences between constipation-predominant IBS (C-IBS) patients and healthy volunteers. Participants underwent ultrasonography to measure gallbladder parameters before and after consuming a predefined meal. Gallbladder volume, wall thickness and resistance index (RI) of cystic and superior mesenteric arteries (SMA) were assessed. Student t-test and paired t-test were used to compare case and control groups and pre- and post-meal data, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 34 people (18 C-IBS and 16 healthy control) were included. The mean (Standard deviation) of gallbladder fasting volume was measured 24.74 (8.85) and 29.73 (9.65) cubic millimeter for case and controls, respectively. Postprandial volume was 11.34 (5.66) and 16.9 (6.16) cubic millimeter for case and controls respectively. We observed a statistically significant difference in emptying fractions (EF) between groups (p value = 0.009). IBS patients had a smaller fasting SMA RI (p value = 0.016) but the fraction of change after meal was not significant (p value = 0.10). The cystic artery RI did not reach statistical significance between the fasting and post-meal values (p value = 0.067). CONCLUSION: IBS patients have a higher emptying fraction and lower change in SMA RI compared to healthy controls. Further studies with larger sample size, inclusion of patients with different coexisting conditions and subtypes of IBS and combining colon transit study with gallbladder ejection fraction evaluation can be used to further provide more meaning to this study.

In this paper, an analytical model based on the percolation theory has been developed to predict the subbands effect on the effective electrical resistivity of carbon nanotubes (CNT)-based polymer nanocomposites. The CNTs are considered as randomly distributed or aligned channel material in the polymer transmitting electrons through tunneling. The tunneling effect takes into account the electron transmission between each connected pair of CNTs to evaluate electrical resistivity. The modeling approach contains two steps of primary prediction of resistivity and further calculation of CNTs' displacements and subsequent change of the resistance. A good agreement is found between the analytical model predictions and experimental data when the tunneling behavior was considered in the percolation transition region. The effect of CNT diameter, orientation state, and subbands on the resistivity has been investigated. The results depict that subbands increment is a collateral benefit to the aspect ratio in decreasing the resistivity. The analytical results demonstrate that a random CNT dispersion leads to a decreased piezoresistivity, while an increased strain range depicts a more non-linear behavior.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) belongs to the Avulavirus genus and Paramyxoviridae family virus that causes acute, highly infectious Newcastle disease in poultry. The two proteins of haemagglutinin neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) are key virulence factors with an important role in its immunogenicity. Genotype VII NDV is still among the most serious viral hazards to the poultry industry worldwide. In this study, a commercial vector vaccine (HVT-NDV) was evaluated compared to the conventional vaccination strategy against Iranian genotype VII. This experiment showed that the group receiving the conventional vaccination strategy had higher antibodies, fewer clinical signs, and lower viral loads in tracheal swabs and feces. Also, two vaccine groups showed significant difference, which could have resulted from two extra vaccine doses in the conventional group. However, except for antibody levels in commercial chickens in the Iran new-generation vaccine, this difference was minor. Further, both groups showed 100% protection in the challenge study. Despite the phylogenetic gap between the NDV-F gene placed in the vector vaccine and the challenge virus (genotypes I and VII, respectively), the rHVT-NDV vaccine offered strong clinical protection and decreased challenge virus shedding considerably.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract cancers including bladder, kidney, ureter, and pelvis are a common malignancy worldwide with high mortality ratio. Aimed to investigate the prevalence of these cancers, we conducted this study. METHODS: In this study, all the information related to ICD10 codes, gender, age and province of residence of individuals were obtained from the data of Iran's cancer registry by the Ministry of Health, Medicine and Medical Education and demographic evidence for each sub-country from the reports of Statistics Center of Iran (SCI). Also, the data of two Iranian national survey studies CASPIAN-III, IV, and V (information related to the care and prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in childhood and adolescence) and STEPs (including information on NCD in adults over 18 years old) were used. The data was analyzed using Poisson regression with mixed effects to estimate the incidence of cancers. RESULTS: Bladder and kidney neoplasm are the most common cancers of the urinary system in Iran. The prevalence of bladder cancer has increased from 5.82 to 11.50 per 100,000 individuals. The increasing trend is growing faster in men compared with women. The incidence of kidney neoplasm has increased over the years (2.03 in 2005 vs. 7.02 in 2020 per 100,000). Having a higher incidence ratio compared with bladder cancer, kidney cancer is responsible for 35.06% of all urinary cancers in 2020 compared with 23.71% in 2005. Both neoplasms of the ureter and renal pelvis were recorded rarely and with lower incidence in both sexes during this period. CONCLUSION: Considering the increasing trend in the incidence of urinary neoplasms in Iran during these years, the advantage of focusing on the risk of urinary cancers is highlighted. Therefore, investigating the prevalence and incidence of urinary cancers to plan and manage these cancers will result in prevention and reduction of the disease burden on the Iranian society. Future studies in this field can help in the prevention and well-timed diagnosis of these cancers.

BACKGROUND: The effect of belatacept on BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) control remains largely unknown. METHODS: This is a propensity matched retrospective cohort study in adult kidney transplant recipients (KTR) transplanted between 2016-2020 who received a belatacept- versus tacrolimus-based immunosuppression regimen. A continuous time multi-state Markov model was used to evaluate BKPyV replication dynamics (BKPyV-dyn). Three BKPyV-dyn states were defined: BKPyV-dyn1 (viral load <3 log10), BKPyV-dyn2 (viral load ≥ 3 log10 and ≤4 log10), and BKPyV-dyn3 (viral load >4 log10). RESULTS: Two hundred eighty KTR on belatacept- and 280 KTR on tacrolimus-based regimens were compared. The probability of transitioning between BKPyV-dyn states and time spent in each state in both groups was comparable. Total duration in BKPyV-dyn-1 was 632.1 days (95% CI 612.1, 648.5) for belatacept versus 615.2 days (95% CI 592.5, 635.8) for tacrolimus, BKPyV-dyn-2 was 49.2 days (95% CI 41.3, 58.4) for belatacept versus 55.6 days (95% CI 46.5, 66.8) for tacrolimus, and BKPyV-dyn-3 was 48.7 days (95% CI 37.1, 363.1) for belatacept versus 59.2 days (95% CI 45.8, 73.5) for tacrolimus. BKPyV associated nephropathy (PyVAN) occurred in 3.9% in belatacept- and 3.9% tacrolimus-treated KRT (P > .9). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with tacrolimus-based immunosuppression, belatacept based immunosuppression was not associated with increased risk of BKPyV-DNAemia or nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: The formation of persister cells is the main reason for persistent infections. They are associated with antibiotic treatment failure and subsequently chronic infection. The study aimed to assess the expression of type II toxin/antitoxin (TA) system genes in persister cells of Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of the following antibiotics vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin in exponential and stationary phases. METHODS AND RESULTS: The colony count was used to evaluate the effect of different types of antibiotics on S. aureus persister cell formation during exponential and stationary phases. Moreover, the expression level of TA systems and clpP genes in the persister population in exponential and stationary phases were measured by quantitative reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results of the study showed the presence of persister phenotype of S. aureus strains in the attendance of bactericidal antibiotics in comparison to the control group during the exponential and stationary phases. Moreover, qRT-PCR resulted in the fact that the role of TA systems involved in the persister cell formation depends on the bacterial growth phase and the type of strain and antibiotic. CONCLUSIONS: In total, the present study provides some data on the persister cell formation and the possible role of TA system genes in this process.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) causes a substantial health and financial burden worldwide, underscoring the need for efficient mass screening approaches. This study attempts to evaluate the Net Cost-Benefit Index (NCBI) of PCa screening in Iran to offer insights for informed decision-making and resource allocation. METHOD: The Net Cost-Benefit Index (NCBI) was calculated for four age groups (40 years and above) using a decision-analysis model. Two screening strategies, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) solely and PSA with Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), were evaluated from the health system perspective. A retrospective assessment of 1402 prostate cancer (PCa) patients' profiles were conducted, and direct medical and non-medical costs were calculated based on the 2021 official tariff rates, patient records, and interviews. The monetary value of mass screening was determined through Willingness to Pay (WTP) assessments, which served as a measure for the benefit aspect. RESULT: The combined PSA and DRE strategy of screening is cost-effective, yields up to $3 saving in costs per case and emerges as the dominant strategy over PSA alone. Screening for men aged 70 and above does not meet economic justification, indicated by a negative Net Cost-Benefit Index (NCBI). The 40-49 age group exhibits the highest net benefit, $13.81 based on basic information and $13.54 based on comprehensive information. Sensitivity analysis strongly supports the cost-effectiveness of the combined screening approach. CONCLUSION: This study advocates prostate cancer screening with PSA and DRE, is economically justified for men aged 40-69. The results of the study recommend that policymakers prioritize resource allocation for PCa screening programs based on age and budget constraints. Men's willingness to pay, especially for the 40-49 age group which had the highest net benefit, leverages their financial participation in screening services. Additionally, screening services for other age groups, such as 50-54 or 55-59, can be provided either for free or at a reduced cost.

BACKGROUND: One of the most significant demographic challenges over the past three decades has been the substantial reduction in fertility rates, worldwidely. As a developing country, Iran has also experienced a rapid decline in fertility over the past decades. Understanding factors influencing fertility is essential for development programs. Moreover, it's crucial to study the parameters that affect the intention for childbearing in any society. Therefore, through a systematic scoping review, the present study investigates the factors influencing couples' decisions toward childbearing. METHODS: This study was a systematic scoping review conducted in 2023. To design and conduct this scoping review, Joanna Briggs Institute's Protocol (Institute TJB, The Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers ' manual 2015; methodology for JBI scoping reviews, 2015) was used and the framework presented by Levac et al. (2010) was also used as a guide for conducting this review. Studies were searched in three main databases including ISI Web of Sciences, PubMed, and Scopus, using a predefined search strategy. Google Scholar was also used for complementary search. The search period was from 2002 to 2022. RESULTS: A total of 18,454 studies were identified across three primary databases. After evaluating articles in three distinct phases based on title, abstract, and full-text, 46 articles were deemed eligible for inclusion in the scoping review. The qualitative analysis of the collected data from the selected studies through the scoping review led to classifying factors influencing households' desire for childbearing into eight main themes and 101 sub-themes. The main themes associated with factors impacting households' intention for childbearing encompass individual determinants, demographic and familial influencing factors, cultural elements, social factors, health-related aspects, economic considerations, insurance-related variables, and government support/incentive policies. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive and holistic attention from governments and officials toward the various factors affecting households' intention and behavior regarding childbearing appears beneficial and effective. Furthermore, given the relative ineffectiveness of some of the current government's supportive/incentive policies to increase couples' desire for childbearing, it seems necessary to review and amend these policies. This review should address the most significant challenges and factors contributing to couples' reluctance to childbearing or strengthen factors that can play a substantial role in fostering fertility and childbearing desires.

BACKGROUND: The regulation of the circadian clock genes, which coordinate the activity of the immune system, is disturbed in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Emerging evidence suggests that butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced by the gut microbiota is involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses as well as circadian-clock genes. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sodium-butyrate supplementation on the expression of circadian-clock genes, inflammation, sleep and life quality in active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. METHODS: In the current randomized placebo-controlled trial, 36 active UC patients were randomly divided to receive sodium-butyrate (600 mg/kg) or placebo for 12-weeks. In this study the expression of circadian clock genes (CRY1, CRY2, PER1, PER2, BMAl1 and CLOCK) were assessed by real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in whole blood. Gene expression changes were presented as fold changes in expression (2^-ΔΔCT) relative to the baseline. The faecal calprotectin and serum level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method (ELIZA). Moreover, the sleep quality and IBD quality of life (QoL) were assessed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire-9 (IBDQ-9) respectively before and after the intervention. RESULTS: The results showed that sodium-butyrate supplementation in comparison with placebo significantly decreased the level of calprotectin (-133.82 ± 155.62 vs. 51.58 ± 95.57, P-value < 0.001) and hs-CRP (-0.36 (-1.57, -0.05) vs. 0.48 (-0.09-4.77), P-value < 0.001) and upregulated the fold change expression of CRY1 (2.22 ± 1.59 vs. 0.63 ± 0.49, P-value < 0.001), CRY2 (2.15 ± 1.26 vs. 0.93 ± 0.80, P-value = 0.001), PER1 (1.86 ± 1.77 vs. 0.65 ± 0.48, P-value = 0.005), BMAL1 (1.85 ± 0.97 vs. 0.86 ± 0.63, P-value = 0.003). Also, sodium-butyrate caused an improvement in the sleep quality (PSQI score: -2.94 ± 3.50 vs. 1.16 ± 3.61, P-value < 0.001) and QoL (IBDQ-9: 17.00 ± 11.36 vs. -3.50 ± 6.87, P-value < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Butyrate may be an effective adjunct treatment for active UC patients by reducing biomarkers of inflammation, upregulation of circadian-clock genes and improving sleep quality and QoL.

The incubation period of COVID-19 symptoms, along with the proliferation and high transmission rate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is the cause of an uncontrolled epidemic worldwide. Vaccination is the front line of prevention, and antiinflammatory and antiviral drugs are the treatment of this disease. In addition, some herbal therapy approaches can be a good way to deal with this disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of propolis syrup with Hyoscyamus niger L. extract in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 with acute disease conditions in a double-blinded approach. The study was performed on 140 patients with COVID-19 in a double-blind, randomized, and multicentral approach. The main inclusion criterion was the presence of a severe type of COVID-19 disease. The duration of treatment with syrup was 6 days and 30 CC per day in the form of three meals. On Days 0, 2, 4, and 6, arterial blood oxygen levels, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and white blood cell, as well as the patient's clinical symptoms such as fever and chills, cough and shortness of breath, chest pain, and other symptoms, were recorded and analyzed. Propolis syrup with H. niger L. significantly reduces cough from the second day, relieving shortness of breath on the fourth day, and significantly reduces CRP, weakness, and lethargy, as well as significantly increased arterial blood oxygen pressure on the sixth day compared to the placebo group (p < 0.05). The results in patients are such that in the most severe conditions of the disease 80% < SpO2 (oxygen saturation), the healing process of the syrup on reducing CRP and increasing arterial blood oxygen pressure from the fourth day is significantly different compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05). The use of syrup is associated with a reduction of 3.6 days in the hospitalization period compared with the placebo group. Propolis syrup with H. niger L. has effectiveness in the viral and inflammatory phases on clinical symptoms and blood parameters and arterial blood oxygen levels of patients with COVID-19. Also, it reduces referrals to the intensive care unit and mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. So, this syrup promises to be an effective treatment in the great challenge of COVID-19.

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid that has been recognized to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-proliferative activities. This study aims to evaluate the inhibitory effects of quercetin against prostate malignancy in vitro and the underlying resistance mechanism. IC50 values of quercetin were determined by MTT assay. Annexin-V/PI staining was used to measure the rate of apoptosis. DNA cell cycle was analysed by PI staining method. Real-time PCR was performed to assess mRNA levels of OPN isoforms, VEGF isoforms, P53 and KLK2. Migration potential, proliferative capability and nucleus morphology of cells were evaluated by the scratch-wound assay, colony-forming assay and Hoechst staining, respectively. Quercetin significantly increased the apoptosis rate of PC-3 and LNCaP cell lines, arrested the cell cycle at the sub-G1/G1 phase, and reduced the migration potential and colony-forming capability. Moreover, upregulation of apoptosis-related genes and downregulation of genes involved in proliferation and angiogenesis was also observed. Although our results elucidated that quercetin has antitumor effects on PC-3 and LNCaP, for the first time, we showed that quercetin treatment causes alterations in the expression of OPN and VEGF isoforms, which are cancer-promoting modulators through various processes such as angiogenesis and drug-resistance. Prostate malignant cells can dodge the anti-carcinogenic properties of quercetin via modulation of OPN and VEGF isoforms in vitro. Therefore, quercetin acts as a double-edged sword in prostate cancer treatment.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates Iranian men's willingness to pay (WTP) for prostate cancer (PCa) screening and influencing factor, along with the impact of information. METHOD: We assessed preferences for prostate cancer screening in 771 Iranian men aged 40 and above using an internet-based questionnaire survey. Participants received basic and complementary information, and their willingness to pay was determined through a payment card approach. A Wilcoxon test assessed the impact of information. We also analyzed prostate cancer screening demand and employed Heckman's two-step model to evaluate factors influencing the willingness to pay. Additionally, reasons for unwillingness to pay were explored. RESULTS: Willingness to pay significantly decreased with complementary information relative to basic information (16.3$ vs 17.8$). Heckman model, using WTP based on basic information shows age, education, and monthly household expenditure positively influenced the decision to pay. In contrast, health status, expectations of remaining life and prostate problems history positively affect amount of WTP for PCa screening, and insurance coverage has a negative impact on it. Majority of respondents (91%) supported PCa screening, with 82% expressing a willingness to pay. Common reasons for not paying include seeing screening as a public good (43%), financial constraints (35%), and having insurance (20%). The screening demand is price-sensitive. CONCLUSION: The basic mindset of Iranian men exaggerates the risk of prostate cancer. Reduced willingness to pay after receiving information reassures the reliability of their financial expectation. Taking into account the factors that influence PCa screening is essential for accurate planning and the successful implementation of this program.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the routine serum and 24-hour urine tests proficiency in diagnosing the baseline metabolic abnormality of kidney stone formers. METHODS: This study analyzes the routine serum and 24-hour urine tests proficiency in diagnosing the baseline metabolic abnormality of kidney stone formers. The sensitivity and specificity, false positive, and negative results of the tests are extracted from diagnostic kits used in the laboratories of the target community. To accurately infer the results, a simulation based on 1000 people was used through 22 standard laboratory tests (Additional File 2), including calcium, oxalate, phosphate, uric acid, sulfate, potassium, sodium, citrate, and magnesium in 24-hour urine; and calcium, creatinine, Vit D, uric acid, and intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) in serum. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated and compared for each diagnostic test versus other diagnostic tests according to the incremental cost required for correct diagnoses of stone causes. RESULTS: Urinary uric acid, citrate, and serum potassium constitute the cost-effectiveness boundary curve in this study. This means that other diagnostic tests are not cost-effective compared to these three tests in terms of indexing at least one item of cost and effectiveness. The ICER index for each correct diagnosis with the urinary uric acid test was $ 1.25 per diagnosis, the most cost-effective test compared to serum potassium and urinary citrate. CONCLUSION: The simplified blood and 24-hour urine metabolic evaluation, including urinary uric acid, citrate, and serum potassium, constitute the cost-effectiveness boundary curve. The most cost-effective test was urinary uric acid measurement.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to construct and validate a composite socioeconomic status indicator containing material capital, human capital, and social capital (CAPSES scale) and also appropriate it for CVDs in a large population-based study. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, the Urban HEART-2 project, was conducted in Tehran, Iran, in 2011. A total of 34,116 households covering 118,542 individuals were assessed in this study. A 14-parts questionnaire was completed for all selected households. All the gathered data were based on the participants' self-reports. Literacy, wealth index, expenditure, skill level, and Townsend index were used as SES indexes. CVDs, including Hypertension, Myocardial infarction, and stroke, were considered the main outcomes. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to construct a CAPSES scale and a composition index of SES. Criterion validity and Construct validity were used to assess this scale. RESULTS: A total of 91,830 subjects consisting of 33,884 (49%) men were included in this analysis. The mean age of the participants was 41.5 ± 11.37 years. Among the assessed participants, 5904(6.4%) reported hypertension, 1507(1.6%) myocardial infarction, and 407(0.4%) strokes. The overall weighted prevalence of self-reported cardiovascular events (hypertension, stroke, and MI) was 8.03% (95%CI: 7.8-8.2). Inverse associations were seen between the CAPSES scale and its domains with CVDs, adjusted for sex, age, BMI, smoking, and diabetes by a multiple logistic regression model. CONCLUSION: The CAPSES scale was significantly associated with stroke and hypertension. Our findings showed that the CAPSES index could be useful for public health research.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a major health problem and cause of mortality worldwide. Despite the prevalence of other cancers in males and females, genital cancers are especially important because of their psychological effects on individuals. Currently, cervical cancer, corpus uteri neoplasm, and ovarian cancer are the most common gynecological cancers in Iran. Prostate cancer has increased in Iranian men in the last decade. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the 15-year national trend in the incidence of genital cancers in the Iranian population. METHODS: In this study, we used Iranian cancer registration data collected by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, demographic information from the reports of the Statistics Center of Iran, STEPs (STEPwise approach to non-communicable diseases risk factor surveillance), and Caspian (childhood and adolescence surveillance and prevention of adult non-communicable disease). A list of potential auxiliary variables and secondary variables at all levels of the province-age-sex were evaluated during the years. We used mixed-effects Poisson regression to model the data and calculate the incidence of each cancer. RESULTS: Our results show an enhancement in the outbreak of all types of male cancers, but the most important are prostate (11.46 in 2005 to 25.67 in 2020 per 100,000 males) and testicular cancers (2.39 in 2005 to 5.05 per 100,000 males). As for female cancers, there has been an increase in ovarian and corpus uteri neoplasm incidence with 6.69 and 4.14 incidences per 100,000 females in 2020, making them the most occurring female genital neoplasms. While the occurrence of cervical cancer has decreased over the years (4.65 in 2005 to 3.24 in 2020). In general, the incidence of genital cancers in men and women has amplified in the last 15 years. CONCLUSIONS: Our study examined the trend of change for each malignant genital neoplasm for 15 years in Iranian men and women in each province. Considering the growing trend of the elderly population in Iran, patient awareness and early screening are essential in reducing mortality and costs imposed on patients and the health care system.

The aim was to define the association between the severity of depression, prosody, and voice acoustic features in women suffering from depression and its comparisons with nondepressed people. Prosody and acoustic features in 30 women with major depression hospitalized in a psychiatric ward and 30 healthy women were investigated in a cross-sectional study. To define the severity of depression, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRS-D) was applied. Acoustic parameters such as jitter, shimmer, cepstral peak prominence (CPP), standard deviation of fundamental frequency (SD F0), harmonic-to-noise ratio, and F0 and also some speech prosodic features including the speed of speech, switching pause duration means, and durations of produced sentences with different modals were measured quantitatively. Also, six raters judged the patient's prosody qualitatively. SPSS V.28 was used for all statistical analyses (p < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between HRS-D with jitter, SD F0, speed of speech, and switching pause means (p ≤ 0.05). The means of CPP and duration of producing emotional sentences differed between the depression and control groups. The HRS-D scores were significantly correlated with switching pauses in patients (Pearson coefficient = 0.47, p=0.05). The results of the perceptual evaluation of prosody judged by six raters showed an 85% correlation between them (p ≤ 0.001). Some acoustic and prosodic parameters are different between healthy women and those with depression disorder (e.g., CPP and duration of emotional sentences) and may also have an association with the severity of depression (e.g., jitter, SD F0, speed of speech, and switching pause means) in women with depression disorder. It was indicated that the best sentence modal to assess prosody in patients with depression would be exclamatory ones compared to declarative and interrogative sentences.

Soil quality and function in forest environments are influenced by the interaction of soil-forming parameters and silvicultural systems. Hyrcanian forests were recently accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which extends across an area of approximately 1.8 million hectares and ascend to an elevation of 2800 m above sea level (m.a.s.l). In these woodlands, Oriental Beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) is the predominant tree species and could be observed at 700-1500 m.a.s.l., and occur on different parent rocks. Shelterwood and single-tree selection techniques have been the primary management methods for beech forests for the past forty years. Studies investigating the impacts of silvicultural systems have not yet been done on soil and forest floor features on different bedrock geology and altitudes. Therefore, in this study, we examined the influence of single-tree selection and shelterwood methods, 25 years after employing those methods, on soil quality and function compared to control areas (intact forests) in Hyrcanian beech stands. For this purpose, 15 forest floor (30 × 30 cm) and topsoil (0-10 cm depth) samples in each silvicultural systems (i.e., single-tree selection and shelterwood methods and control zones) × 4 regions (including Rasht, Nowshahr, Sari and Gorgan) × 4 altitude levels (with averages of 800, 1000, 1200 and 1400 m.a.s.l.) were considered. According to our findings, the investigated forest regions, forest floor and soil characteristics across various locations spots could be separated by principal component analysis output, and more than 85% of the variance was explained by the first and second axes. The structural equation model showed that the region, altitude and silvicultural systems had an effective role in the changes in soil biological activities by influencing the forest floor, and the soil physicochemical features. Based upon the network model, the C/N ratio, the sand content, the soil aggregate stability, the available K, the fulvic acid, and the Acarina density were found to be prominent factors with regard to soil function. In the control sites, increased soil organic material fractions, microbial/enzyme and biota activities were detected, particularly at the lower altitudes of the Nowshahr site, which had geological formations of dolomite and calcic layers. Taken together, it seems that the single-tree method, commonly referred to as the close-to-nature technique produces more suitable conditions for soil functioning compared to the shelterwood management approach. Silvicultural systems, bedrock geology and altitude can have major detrimental effects on soil function and fertility, over the long-term, impacts may increase with harvest intensity.

In this study, the degradation of two organophosphate pesticides, namely, propetamphos and azamethiphos, in the presence of Ag+ at different mole ratios was investigated. Moreover, the kinetic and degradation pathways of both chemicals in the range of 0-60 min were explored. Gas chromatography equipped with a thermionic specific detector was used to investigate the pesticide degradation kinetics and mechanism. The results show that the degradation rate of both pesticides follows first-order kinetic. The first-order rate constant and the half-life of reaction were in the range of 0.002-0.143 min-1, 187-2.1 min, and 0.005-0.164 min-1 and 60-1.8 min, for propetamphos and azamethiphos, respectively, at ambient temperature (25 ºC). Because group containing sulfur atom is a better leaving group than group containing nitrogen, the rate of degradation of azamethiphos is higher than propetamphos. In a higher mole ratio of Ag+ to pesticides, the degradation rate was increased, and it is possible to predict the rate of degradation of pesticides according to the chemical composition of leaving group.

2,2-Dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide (DBNPA) is a widely used biocide with potential environmental implications due to its toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the in vivo toxicity of DBNPA in zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model organism in environmental toxicology. Both adult and larval zebrafish were exposed to varying concentrations of DBNPA, and significant morphological changes and mortality rates were observed. The study found that even relatively low concentrations of DBNPA can have detrimental effects on zebrafish embryonic development, and high concentrations resulted in rapid mortality in adult zebrafish and larvae. The LC50 values calculated from this study were 9.3 ppm for adults and 9.1 ppm for larvae, indicating the high toxicity of DBNPA to these organisms. These findings underscore the potential environmental impact of DBNPA and highlight the need for further research into its effects on aquatic ecosystems.
