RESUMEN

We discuss the case of a 27-month-old girl afflicted with fibromuscular dysplasia. She presented with hemiatrophy of left upper and lower limbs, nail dystrophy, ulcers on the tips of her toes, cold and painful limbs, foot drop, and hypertension. The initial appearance started at 2 months of age and other diagnoses such as complex regional pain syndrome, reflex sympathetic syndrome, vasculitis and coagulation disorders had been considered. Angiography revealed that all the arterial branches of the left lower and upper limbs, from brachial to ulnar and radial, and from iliac and femoral to tibialis arteries were affected. Sural nerve biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. In the follow-up visits until 2 years after the patient's discharge she did not develop any new problem and her blood pressure was controlled by enalapril and amlodipine.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between conductive hearing loss and maxillary constriction. METHOD: A total of 120 people, aged from 7 to 40 years, who were referred to an audiologist when taking out health insurance or for school pre-registration check-up, were selected for this study. A total of 60 participants who had hearing threshold levels greater than 15 dB in both ears were chosen as the conductive hearing loss group. The remaining 60, with normal hearing thresholds of less than 15 dB, were used as the control group. All participants were referred to an orthodontic clinic. Participants who had a posterior crossbite and high palatal vault were considered to suffer from maxillary constriction. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the sex ratios and mean ages of the groups. However, participants with conductive hearing loss were 3.5 times more likely than controls to suffer from maxillary constriction. CONCLUSION: Patients who suffer from conductive hearing loss are likely to show a maxillary abnormality when examined by an orthodontist.

RESUMEN

The absorption spectra of three azoquinolin-8-ol derivatives (o-, m-, p-cyano hydroxy azoquinolin dyes) were investigated in liquid and liquid crystalline solutions as a function of the solvent polarity. The spectral data of the dyes were compared in both ordinary liquid solvents and liquid crystalline media. Analysis of the spectral data was used to determine the azo and hydrazone forms in both the environments. The spectral shifts were correlated by Kamlet-Taft and Katritzky multi-parameter polarity scales. For the azoquinoline dyes, the azo form is almost entirely dominated in polar anisotropic hosts. In contrast, the compounds remain dominantly in hydrazone form in some polar solvents such as DMF. The polarized absorption spectra of the compounds in the anisotropic media were measured and their degree of anisotropies was determined.
