1. This study evaluated the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ciprofloxacin and the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) mechanisms in 97 nontyphoidal Salmonella spp. isolated from broilers and carcases from three different regions in Brazil. The presence of mutations in quinolone resistance determination regions (QRDRS) was investigated in the ciprofloxacin-resistant strain by DNA sequencing.2. Most of the Salmonella spp. (85.6%) had intermediate resistance to ciprofloxacin and only one isolate was resistant. MIC breakpoints ranged from ≤0.03 to 1 µg/ml and 67.0% of the strains had a MIC of 0.25 µg/ml (n=65). Thirteen strains (13.4%) were susceptible to ciprofloxacin with MIC ≤0.06 µg/ml. The qnrB gene was detected in eight isolates with intermediate resistance and in two susceptible strains. The other PMQR genes, qnrA, qnrC, qnrD, qnrS, qnrVC, aac(6')-Ib, qepA, oqxAB and mutations in QRDR were not detected in any strain.3. There was a high frequency of ciprofloxacin intermediate resistant Salmonella from broiler and broiler carcases from Brazil. The presence of these strains in poultry and derived products poses a risk to public health.

BACKGROUND: Using sulfated polysaccharides (SP) in fish sperm freezing medium promotes cell maintenance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different SP concentrations, extracted from two seaweeds (Gracilaria domingensis and Ulva fasciata), as a supplement to the sperm freezing medium of Prochilodus brevis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five semen pools were diluted in a solution composed of 5% glucose, 10 % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and different SP concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 mg/mL). The samples were cryopreserved and, after 7 days, rewarmed and analyzed for morphology, plasma membrane integrity, DNA integrity, mitochondrial activity and sperm kinetics [total motility, progressive motility, curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight line velocity (VSL), average path velocity (VAP), linearity (LIN), and wobble (WOB)]. RESULTS: There was no interaction between seaweed and SP concentrations. Similar effects were observed with SP extracted from the two seaweeds, regardless of concentration. When comparing the SP concentrations, regardless of the seaweed, 1.0 mg/mL SP showed better results for VCL and VSL. For VAP and WOB, 1.0 mg/mL SP showed better results, but differed from 3.0 mg/mL. LIN followed the same pattern, but differed from SP at 2.5 and 3.0 mg/mL. For progressive motility, 1.0 mg/mL G. domingensis showed superior results compared to the control. For mitochondrial activity, G. domingensis was superior to U. fasciata, regardless of concentration. The lowest concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 mg/mL) showed the best results, regardless of the seaweed. However, the control was superior to all treatments tested. PURPOSE: There are no data regarding periodontal derangements in patients with adrenal incidentalomas (AI). We assessed the frequency and severity of periodontitis in patients with AI [non-functioning adrenal incidentaloma (NFAI) and possible autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS)] and compared with individuals with normal adrenal. METHODS: A cross-sectional study evaluated thirty-five individuals with AI and 26 controls. NFAI and possible ACS diagnosis was based on the current guidelines: NFAI [cortisol levels after 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test (1 mg-DST) ≤ 1.8 µg/dL (≤ 50 nmol/L)]; possible ACS [cortisol levels after 1 mg-DST 1.9-5.0 µg/dL (51-138 nmol/L)]. Sociodemographic data were collected, and a full-mouth periodontal evaluation was performed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between groups regarding age, sex, income, ethnicity, education level, smoking, body mass index, dysglycemia, and arterial hypertension. Patients with AI exhibited worse periodontal conditions than controls for the following periodontal clinical parameters: mean percentage of probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) ≥ 5 mm (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively). Patients with NFAI and possible ACS showed higher gingival bleeding index (p = 0.014), bleeding on probing (p < 0.001), and CAL (p < 0.001) means compared to controls. The frequencies of periodontitis were 72.7% in patients with NFAI, 84.6% in possible ACS, and 30.8% in controls (p = 0.001). Periodontitis was more severe in patients with possible ACS than NFAI and controls. Patients with NFAI and possible ACS exhibited odds ratio for periodontitis of 4.9 (p = 0.016) and 8.6 (p = 0.02), respectively. CONCLUSION: Patients with AI have higher frequency and severity of periodontitis than controls. The presence of AI was an independent predictive factor for periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Sulfated polysaccharides from the skin of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), added to the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) semen diluting medium, can be potential antioxidants and promote the maintenance of sperm quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of different concentrations of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from the skin of Nile tilapia as a supplement in two cryogenic media for tambaqui semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tambaqui males received a single dose of pituitary carp extract. The semen was collected for pool analysis and, later, cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The pools were diluted and frozen in a solution containing fish-specific powdered coconut water (ACP-104) and 10% DMSO or 5% Glucose and 10% DMSO and supplemented with different concentrations of GAGs. The controls had no GAGs addition. After 45 days, the samples were thawed by immersion in a water bath and evaluated for membrane and DNA integrity, morphology and sperm kinetics. RESULTS: The parameters of linearity (LIN), straightness (STR) and DNA integrity of sperm frozen in 5% Glucose showed better results than ACP-104. For membrane integrity, concentrations of 0 and 1.0 mg/mL were better than 5 mg/mL. Semen motility in 5% Glucose showed superior results at concentrations lower than 5 mg/mL of GAGs. For VCL and VAP, in ACP-104, 3.0 mg/mL exceeded the other treatments. In 5% Glucose, for VCL, 4.0 mg/mL showed the lowest results compared to concentrations of <3.5 mg/mL and, for VAP, it also differed from 4.5 mg/mL CONCLUSION: Therefore, the skin of Nile tilapia has GAGs, in low concentrations, capable of improving the post-thawed sperm quality of tambaqui, especially in 5% Glucose medium.

1. The aim of this study was to compare the resistance pattern of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. isolated from conventional production (n = 34) and backyard poultry flocks (n = 36) from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The disc diffusion method and statistical tests were used for investigation and analysis of the resistance pattern of Campylobacter spp. isolated from different rearing systems.2. Antimicrobial resistance percentages to amoxycillin with clavulanic acid (AMC), ampicillin (AMP), ceftiofur (CTF), ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENO), erythromycin (ERI), gentamicin (GEN) and tetracycline (TET) were 32.4%, 44.1%, 67.6%, 97.1%, 82.4%, 26.5%, 5.9% and 38.2% in conventional production flocks respectively, while the backyard flock's resistance levels were 0.0%, 13.9%, 69.4%, 100.0%, 91.7%, 5.6%, 0.0% and 16.7%, respectively.3. Campylobacter spp. from conventional poultry production was more resistant to AMC, AMO, ERI and TET (P > 0.05) when compared to strains from backyard poultry. A higher frequency of resistance to fluoroquinolones (FLQ), CIP and ENO, was observed in strains from both systems, demonstrating the spread of resistant strains among poultry production environments.

AIMS: To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of an invasive and Hp65-producing strain Lactococcus lactis NCDO2118 FnBPA+ (pXYCYT:Hsp65) in acute 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in mice as an innovative therapeutic strategy against Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS AND RESULTS: The pXYCYT:Hsp65 plasmid was transformed into the L. lactis NCDO2118 FnBPA+ strain, resulting in the L. lactis NCDO2118 FnBPA+ (pXYCYT:Hsp65) strain. Then, the functionality of the strain was evaluated in vitro for Hsp65 production by Western blotting and for invasion into Caco-2 cells. The results demonstrated that the strain was able to produce Hsp65 and efficiently invade eukaryotic cells. Subsequently, in vivo, the anti-inflammatory capacity of the recombinant strain was evaluated in colitis induced with TNBS in BALB/c mice. Oral administration of the recombinant strain was able to attenuated the severity of colitis by mainly reducing IL-12 and IL-17 levels and increasing IL-10 and secretory immunoglobulin A levels. CONCLUSIONS: The L. lactis NCDO2118 FnBPA+ (pXYCYT:Hsp65) strain contributed to a reduction in inflammatory damage in experimental CD. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study, which used L. lactis for the production and delivery of Hsp65, has scientific relevance because it shows the efficacy of this new strategy based on therapeutic protein delivery into mammalian enterocytes.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to estimate mortality risk among women exposed to violence in Brazil using population-based data. STUDY DESIGN: This study used a linked database containing nearly 800,000 violence (against women) notifications and 16,500 associated deaths over the period 2011-2016. METHODS: Aggregate age-standardized population-based rates of mortality were built to estimate risk ratios (RRs) at the national and state level, and for different forms of violence and causes of death, as well as type of offender involved, and across various characteristics of the women. RRs compared the rate of mortality among women exposed to violence with that in the general population of women - excess mortality due to violence was also derived from this comparison. The analysis was divided into two time periods (2011-13 and 2014-16). RESULTS: During 2014-16, women exposed to violence had an estimated mortality risk that was 8.3 [95% confidence interval (CI): 8.2-8.5] times higher than that of the general woman population, and an estimated 100 women died on a weekly basis as a direct or indirect consequence of exposure to violence. Higher (all-cause) mortality risk was associated with physical violence and violence that involved repetition and that was self-inflicted. The risk of mortality increased when the cause of death involved external causes (RR: 51.2, 95% CI: 49.6-52.8). When death was attributable to (i) non-communicable diseases and (ii) communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases, the risk was 5.4 [95% CI: 5.3-5.6] and 6.7 [95% CI: 6.1-7.2] times, respectively. Women at greatest (all-cause) mortality risk include white and multiracial (parda) and single women in the age group 10-29 years, who live in the northeast part of the country. When the offender was a partner/ex., women aged 10-19 years showed the greatest (all-cause) mortality risk at 16.9 [95% CI: 13.9-19.8] times. Higher risk was also observed within the age group 30-59 years when death was attributable to external causes (RR: 74.6, 95% CI: 71.3-77.9). For younger women and girls, there was a clear gradient in (all-cause) mortality risk, with those living in the poorest municipalities at greater risk. Age-specific mortality risk also showed significant variation within and across states. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis suggests that most women exposed to violence will likely experience an increased risk of mortality, regardless of her place of residence, age group, racial/ethnic background, marital status situation, and socio-economic status. The estimated RRs are only an approximation given the design of this analysis and should be interpreted with caution.

AIMS: A regimen utilizing Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and another vaccine system as a booster may represent a promising strategy for the development of an efficient tuberculosis vaccine for adults. In a previous work, we confirmed the ability of Lactococcus lactis fibronectin-binding protein A (FnBPA+) (pValac:ESAT-6), a live mucosal DNA vaccine, to produce a specific immune response in mice after oral immunization. In this study, we examined the immunogenicity of this strain as a booster for the BCG vaccine in mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: After immunization, cytokine and immunoglobulin profiles were measured. The BCG prime L. lactis FnBPA+ (pValac:ESAT-6) boost group was the most responsive group, with a significant increase in splenic pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-17, IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α compared with the negative control. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results obtained here, we demonstrated that L. lactis FnBPA+ (pValac:ESAT-6) was able to increase the BCG vaccine general immune response. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This work is of great scientific and social importance because it represents the first step towards the development of a booster to the BCG vaccine using L. lactis as a DNA delivery system.

Cows are probably the main source of contamination of raw milk with Staphylococcus aureus. Mammary glands with subclinical mastitis can shed large numbers of Staph. aureus in milk. Because of the risk of this pathogen to human health as well as animal health, the aim of this paper was to describe an outbreak of mastitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA), oxacillin-susceptible mecA-positive Staph. aureus (OS-MRSA), and methicillin-susceptible Staph. aureus (MSSA) on a dairy farm. Milk samples were obtained from all quarters, showing an elevated somatic cell count by the California Mastitis Test. The isolates were identified by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from 53% (61/115) of the milk samples, with 60 isolates identified as Staph. aureus (98.4%) and 1 isolate identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis (1.6%). The presence of the mecA gene was verified in 48.3% of Staph. aureus isolates. Of the Staph. aureus isolates, 23.3% were MRSA and 25.0% were OS-MRSA. The total of mastitis cases infected with MRSA was 12.2%. The detection of this large percentage of mastitis cases caused by MRSA and OS-MRSA is of great concern for the animals' health, because ß-lactams are still the most important antimicrobials used to treat mastitis. In addition, Staph. aureus isolates causing bovine mastitis represent a public health risk.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious public health problem worldwide. The progression of the disease depends on several host and viral factors and may result in fulminant hepatitis (very rare), acute hepatitis with spontaneous clearance, and chronic hepatitis B infection. Previous studies demonstrated that variations in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II (HLA-DPB1 and HLA-DQB2 genes) are related to the chronic HBV infection. This study aimed to investigate the association of two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs), one in the HLA-DPB1 (rs9277535) and one in the HLA-DQB2 (rs7453920), with chronic hepatitis B infection in a southern Brazilian sample. This case-control study included 260 HBV patients attended in a Specialized Center for Health in Caxias do Sul (Brazil) between 2014 and 2016. The same number of controls (matching for age, gender, and ethnicity) was obtained in a University Hospital in the same city and period. Blood samples were collected and genomic DNA was extracted. Genotyping were performed by real-time Taqman PCR method. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals and significance level of 5% (P < 0.05) were calculated. Allele frequencies in the SNP rs9277535 were 72.6% for A and 27.4% for G nucleotides in cases and 75.0% for A and 25.0% for G in controls. Allele frequencies in the SNP rs7453920 were of 25.7% for A and 74.3% for G in cases and 28.8% for A and 71.2% for G in controls. No statistically significant association was found between both SNPs and chronic hepatitis B (P > 0.05).

Public acceptance is crucial for the implementation of energy technologies. Hydraulic fracturing is a technology widely used in the USA for natural gas production from shale formations, but currently finds strong public opposition worldwide, especially in Europe. Shale gas exploitation and exploration have the potential to significantly reduce import dependency in several countries, including Spain. To better understand public opinion on this issue, this article reports a survey targeting both the entire Spanish population and the inhabitants of the province of Burgos, the location where shale gas exploration permits have already been issued. Results demonstrate that half of the Spanish population opposes shale gas, and this opposition increases in autonomous communities that are closer to possible exploration sites. The results also show that socio-demographic aspects are not strong predictors of opposition. In addition, Burgos' population show different behaviours toward shale gas that demonstrates that proximity and prospect of shale gas development affects opinion. Finally, there is still a great level of unfamiliarity with high volume hydraulic fracturing and shale gas in both populations sampled.

BACKGROUND: The development of reliable alternatives to conventional hospitalization in patients with cancer would have great clinical and economical value. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of a home-based nursing intervention model as a safe alternative for the management of acute medical complications in cancer patients who would otherwise require conventional hospitalization. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From October 2013 to October 2014, we prospectively evaluated the outcomes of consecutive acute medical episodes treated at home under the home-based intervention program named the Bridge Project (BP). Episodes were classified as "avoided hospitalization in outpatients" (AHO) vs. "reduced hospitalization in inpatients" (RHI). The primary end-point was to assess the rate and causes of BP intervention failure (unplanned hospital readmission or death). RESULTS: Two hundred and forty-six consecutive episodes (52 % AHO and 48 % RHI) involving 203 patients (55 % male; mean age 63 years) were enrolled. The main conditions managed at home were non-neutropenic infections (40 %), febrile neutropenia (20 %), and cancer-related complications (28 %). The median duration of the BP intervention was 5 days (range 1-16 days). No deaths were reported at home. Unplanned hospital readmissions occurred in 9 % of episodes (14 % in AHO vs. 4 % in RHI; p = 0.001). Five of the 22 readmitted patients (22.7 % of the BP failures; 2.5 % of the whole series) died during hospitalization. The BP intervention burden was 1353 days, representing a potential saving of 14 % of days of hospitalization during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The BP is a safe intervention which can potentially avoid or reduce the length of hospitalization in selected cancer patients with acute medical complications. Our findings support further development of innovative home-based clinical approaches to promote potentially avoidable hospitalization in this setting.

The purpose of the study was to compare the peripheral retinal sensitivity of the visual field between professional soccer players and age-gender matched non-athlete subjects. All participants underwent a complete eye evaluation. The visual field was evaluated with the achromatic program 60-4 from the Humphrey automated perimetry. The binocular visual field was created with the best location model. It was divided into 4 quadrants (left superior, right superior, left inferior, and right inferior) and compared between groups. The study group comprised 29 professional male football players and the control group comprised 26 age-matched male non-athletes. Mean age was 25.8±4.7 years in the study group and 26.3±5.1 for controls. The average of retina sensitivity in the left inferior and right inferior quadrants was higher in the study group (27.2±1.2 dB and 27.0±1.4 dB) as compared to controls (26.1±1.9 dB and 25.5±2.1 dB). (Student's t test, P=0.011 and P=0.004, respectively). In this small cohort, professional soccer players presented higher retina sensitivity in the inferior quadrants when compared to non-athletes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the costs of using a transparent polyurethane film (PF) and hydrocolloid dressing (HD) in the prevention of pressure ulcers (PUs). METHOD: This descriptive, observational, longitudinal, comparative study was conducted in the intensive care units, coronary care unit and medical clinic of a charity hospital in Brazil. Data were collected during a 30-day study period, consisting of physical examination, assessment of risk factors for PU development and application of the Braden scale, which were performed at inclusion in the study and once daily during hospitalisation. Either PF or HD was applied bilaterally in the sacral and trochanteric regions for prevention of PUs in patients at a moderate to high risk of PUs according to the Braden scale, and costs of using PU preventive dressings were estimated. RESULTS: The mean total costs per dressing change per patient when using the HD and PF to prevent PUs were 413.60 BRL and 74.04 BRL, respectively. There were significant between-group differences in mean costs for all variables, except for saline solution and nurse-technician services. CONCLUSION: Results showed that the mean cost per dressing change per patient was lower when using the transparent PF than when using the HD.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To compare safety and efficacy of bridging approach with intravenous (IV) thrombolysis in patients with acute anterior strokes and proximal occlusions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with ischemic anterior strokes admitted within a 4 h 30 min window in two different centers were included. The first center performed IV therapy (alteplase 0.6 mg/kg) during 30 min and, in absence of clinical improvement, mechanical thrombectomy with flow restoration using a Solitaire stent (StS); the second carried out IV thrombolysis (alteplase 0.9 mg/kg) alone. Only T, M1 or M2 occlusions present on CT angiography were considered. Endpoints were clinical outcome and mortality at 3 months. RESULTS: There were 63 patients in the bridging and 163 in the IV group. No significant differences regarding baseline characteristics were observed. At 3 months, 46% (n = 29) of the patients treated in the combined and 23% (n = 38) of those treated in the IV group had a modified Rankin scale (mRS) of 0-1 (P < 0.001). A statistical significant difference was observed for all sites of occlusion. In a logistic regression model, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and bridging therapy were independent predictors of good outcome (respectively, P = 0.001 and P = 0.0018). Symptomatic hemorrhage was documented in 6.3% vs 3.7% in the bridging and in the IV group, respectively (P = 0.32). There was no difference in mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that patients treated with a bridging approach were more likely to have minimal or no deficit at all at 3 months as compared to the IV treated group.

In this study, Lactococcus lactis was engineered to express mutated internalin A on its surface and to secrete large amounts of listeriolysin O (LLO) in order to improve its potential as a vehicle for DNA vaccination. Western blotting experiments demonstrated that the bacterium expressed LLO in both the cytoplasmic and extracellular compartments, with higher quantities found in the culture supernatants. A hemolytic assay showed that the recombinant strain secreted 250 ng active LLO/mg total protein. This mInlA/LLO-producing strain of L. lactis may be used as an alternative tool in DNA vaccination against a number of infectious diseases or in cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: In the Iberian Peninsula, the Mirandese dialect, spoken in Miranda do Douro (Portugal) close to the north-eastern border with Spain, has attracted much attention. Aim, subjects and methods: This study focuses on providing further insight into the connections forged between Miranda do Douro and regions in the nearby Province of Zamora. This is in order to better assess the extent to which such relations could have been detained by the current patterns of genetic diversity of the populations, whilst contributing to refining the knowledge on patterns of micro-differentiation within the Peninsula. The genetic characterization of both populations was performed through the analysis of X-chromosomal markers: X-STRs and X-indels. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results showed that Miranda do Douro tended to present slightly lower levels of diversity in comparison to the other studied regions, which can be a discreet sign of isolation of that population over the years that might have led the way to the preservation of a language not spoken anywhere else in the country. The analysis of X-STRs particularly brought to light the presence of a subtle population sub-structure at the micro-geographical area encompassing the north-eastern border, which seems to portray the importance of the political border as a mechanism withholding gene flow between the two countries.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance and effectiveness of a hydrocolloid dressing (HD) and a transparent polyurethane film (PF) in preventing pressure ulcer (PU) development. METHOD: The study was conducted in the intensive care unit, coronary care unit and medical clinic of the Holy House of Mercy of Passos, Brazil. Data were collected 48 hours after admission and during hospitalisation. The Braden scale was used for PU risk assessment. Consecutive eligible patients without PUs were randomly assigned by lottery to the two groups, either the HD or PF group. RESULTS: Of the 160 eligible patients, significant between-group differences were found in the mean total number of dressing changes (HD, 6.09±1.655 changes; PF, 5.59±2.036 changes; p=0.010), and mean number of dressing changes in the sacral region (HD, 2.50±0.871; PF, 2.05±0.825; p=0.001), with the PF group requiring significantly fewer changes than the HD group. The most common reasons for changing dressings in both groups were moisture (PF 51.1%; HD 47.9%) and shear (HD 43%; PF 38.9%), with a significant difference in shear between groups. The incidence of PUs was significantly lower (p=0.038) in the PF group (8.7%) compared with that in the HD group (15%). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the transparent polyurethane film had a better performance and was more effective than the hydrocolloid dressing in preventing PU development.

Thermal shock is widely recognized by modern medicine. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are known, as are its possible consequences, but scientific reports in the literature about clinical cases with severe consequences are sparse. The authors present a case of cardiorespiratory arrest after prolonged sun exposure followed by a dive in the ocean. Other aetiological causes were ruled out, by exclusion, leading to the diagnosis of cardiorespiratory arrest caused by thermal shock. It is important to inform the public in general of the risks of negligent behaviour on the beach.

Mycoplasma synoviae infection of hens has been associated with problems of eggshell quality called eggshell apex abnormalities (EAA). Little is known about the quality of EAA eggs from a commercial point of view, especially during their storage. The study aimed to examine the differences between EAA and normal eggs during storage under controlled conditions in 2 seasons, summer and winter, by comparing internal and external quality parameters. In a conventional egg production farm with white laying hens of varying ages in the city of Bastos, state of São Paulo, Brazil, 232 eggs were used in the summer season and 400 eggs in the winter season. Half of the eggs had EAA, and the other half were considered normal eggs for each season. The eggs were analyzed at 2, 7, 14, 21, and 28 d after being laid and stored from 24.6 to 25.8°C in summer and from 24 to 25°C in winter. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in the average egg weight between EAA and normal eggs at any studied time point, but in both seasons, the weight loss in EAA eggs was higher than in normal eggs. The losses in Haugh unit scores from the first to the last measurements were approximately 40% regardless of egg type or season of production. In comparing eggshell thickness, only the apices of the EAA eggs were thinner (P < 0.0001) than normal eggs in the summer, but in the winter, the EAA egg apices (P < 0.0001) and sides (P = 0.03) were both thinner. The presence of EAA did not affect the eggshell weight (P > 0.05) or eggshell percentage (P > 0.05). The eggshell strength of the EAA eggs was lower (P < 0.0001) than normal eggs in both the summer (16.57%) and winter (19.86%). The presence of EAA did not affect the internal quality of the egg, but was related to a greater loss of external quality and weight during storage.
