RESUMEN

This case report describes an early lesion of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PLTD)--plasmacytic hyperplasia with atypical morphology. The 54-year-old patient was 4 months after liver transplantation due to alcoholic cirrhosis. The postoperative course had been uneventful without graft rejection episodes. Primary immunosuppressive therapy included tacrolimus and prednisone. On admission to the hospital the patient showed rapidly increasing jaundice, hepatomegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and significant leukocytosis. A biopsy suggested generalized infection. Acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was confirmed using serological methods. Despite treatment the patient died. On autopsy we found features of generalized infection. Histological examination of the enlarged lymph nodes showed plasmacytic hyperplasia despite lymph node atrophy. Plasmacytic hyperplasia, an early lesion of PTLD despite usually a good prognosis with multifactor therapy may display a rapid course that leads to death through intensified immunosuppression. In accordance with other reports we confirmed reactivation of EBV infection as the probable cause of plasmacytic hyperplasia. The lymph node morphology of plasmacytic hyperplasia may be atypical with atrophy of lymphoid components accompanying plasma cell proliferation.

RESUMEN

Review of current knowledge concerning the etiology and factors associated with development and clinical course of PVR is presented. Special attention was paid to the role of blood-retinal barrier break and iatrogenic factors. The new conception that PVR could be compared with "wound healing" reaction, in which autoimmunological mechanisms were involved is also discussed.

RESUMEN

The authors present results of experimental studies on the usefulness of hematoporphyrin and laser in diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors. An amelanotic Greene melanoma was implanted into anterior chamber of 10 rabbits. After administration of HpD the tumor was irradiated with laser light of wavelengths 406 nm for diagnosis and 630 nm for selective destruction of neoplastic cells. During follow-up the tumor was growing pale and its gradual shrinkage was observed. In histopathological examination multiple area of necrosis with total destruction of blood vessels were found.

RESUMEN

The authors evaluated the tolerance of the rabbit eye to a new generation of polyester bands coated by polymethane polyester or by silicone. Investigations consisted on the application of episcleral implants made from polyester coated bands and--for comparison--of already well known polyester non-coated bands The eyes were removed on the 4th, 10th, 30th, 60th and 90th day after operation, macroscopically evaluated and fixed in formaline. The specimen were prepared from the spot of the applied implant together with a margin of surrounding tissues. Clinical observations, macroscopic evaluations as well as histopathological examinations showed a good tolerance of the silicone coated bands; it was discovered instead that the polyurethane coated bands are causing a more pronounced inflammatory reaction in the early postoperative period.

RESUMEN

One of the therapeutical methods in the great hole and ora serrata retinal detachment are the retino-scleral sutures. The study evaluates the tolerance of this type of stitches. Experimental investigations have been performed in rabbits with sutures of Ethilon 8-0 or chromic collagen 8-0 put through the sclera. Both segments--the anterior and posterior one have been taken under consideration. The eye have been enucleated on the 1st, 2d, 7th, 14th and 60th day after surgery and evaluated macroscopically. The specimen from the spot of stitching have been executed after fixation in formaline. Clinical observations, macroscopic evaluation of the enucleated eyes and results of the histopathological examination showed good tolerance of the retinal stitches through the tissue of the rabbits eye and indicate the possibility of a clinical utilization of this method.

RESUMEN

Morphological lesions were found to be different in arteries and in veins, in 9 cases of Buerger's disease. The arterial lesions were not characteristic and consisted of non-specific inflammation, thrombosis and obliteration which also occur in many other disease. In contrast, in addition to wall infiltration and thrombosis, the veins showed microabscesses and giant cell granulomas, which we believe to be absent in all other known diseases. The affected venous segment exhibited a variety of lesions. In the earliest period, the morphological aspect of inflammation in arteries and veins was fairly similar. In a late periods, that is those of vascular obliteration, the arteries and veins did not show any distinguishing morphological differences.
