This study provides a morphological, ultrastructural, and phylogenetic characterization of a novel micro-eukaryotic parasite (2.3-2.6 µm) infecting amphipod genera Echinogammarus and Orchestia. Longitudinal studies across two years revealed that infection prevalence peaked in late April and May, reaching 64% in Echinogammarus sp. and 15% in Orchestia sp., but was seldom detected during the rest of the year. The parasite infected predominantly hemolymph, connective tissue, tegument, and gonad, although hepatopancreas and nervous tissue were affected in heavier infections, eliciting melanization and granuloma formation. Cell division occurred inside walled parasitic cysts, often within host hemocytes, resulting in hemolymph congestion. Small subunit (18S) rRNA gene phylogenies including related environmental sequences placed the novel parasite as a highly divergent lineage within Class Filasterea, which together with Choanoflagellatea represent the closest protistan relatives of Metazoa. We describe the new parasite as Txikispora philomaios n. sp. n. g., the first confirmed parasitic filasterean lineage, which otherwise comprises four free-living flagellates and a rarely observed endosymbiont of snails. Lineage-specific PCR probing of other hosts and surrounding environments only detected T. philomaios in the platyhelminth Procerodes sp. We expand the known diversity of Filasterea by targeted searches of metagenomic datasets, resulting in 13 previously unknown lineages from environmental samples.

Diseases of bivalve molluscs caused by paramyxid parasites of the genus Marteilia have been linked to mass mortalities and the collapse of commercially important shellfish populations. Until recently, no Marteilia spp. have been detected in common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) populations in the British Isles. Molecular screening of cockles from ten sites on the Welsh coast indicates that a Marteilia parasite is widespread in Welsh C. edule populations, including major fisheries. Phylogenetic analysis of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) gene sequences from this parasite indicates that it is a closely related but different species to Marteilia cochillia, a parasite linked to mass mortality of C. edule fisheries in Spain, and that both are related to Marteilia octospora, for which we provide new rDNA sequence data. Preliminary light and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations support this conclusion, indicating that the parasite from Wales is located primarily within areas of inflammation in the gills and the connective tissue of the digestive gland, whereas M. cochillia is found mainly within the epithelium of the digestive gland. The impact of infection by the new species, here described as Marteilia cocosarum n. sp., upon Welsh fisheries is currently unknown.

The velvet swimming crab Necora puber has been fished in Ireland since the early 1980s and contributes significant income to smaller fishing vessels. From 2016 onwards, reduced landings have been reported. We undertook a full pathological investigation of crabs from fishing grounds at 3 sites on the west (Galway), southwest (Castletownbere) and east (Howth) coasts of Ireland. Histopathology, transmission electron microscopy and molecular taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses showed high prevalence and infection level of Paramarteilia canceri, previously only reported from the edible crab Cancer pagurus. This study provides the first molecular data for P. canceri, and shows its phylogenetic position in the order Paramyxida (Rhizaria). Other parasites and symbionts detected in the crabs were also noted, including widespread but low co-infection with Hematodinium sp. and a microsporidian consistent with the Ameson and Nadelspora genera. This is the first histological record of Hematodinium sp. in velvet crabs from Ireland. Four N. puber individuals across 2 sites were co-infected by P. canceri and Hematodinium sp. At one site, 3 velvet crabs infected with P. canceri were co-infected with the first microsporidian recorded from this host; the microsporidian 18S sequence was almost identical to Ameson pulvis, known to infect European shore crabs Carcinus maenas. The study provides a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of this and all other available Ameson and Nadelspora 18S sequences. Together, these findings provide a baseline for further investigations of N. puber populations along the coast of Ireland.

We discuss the use of chest computed tomography (CT) in the initial screening for gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) metastases. Chest CT does not influence overall treatment outcome or the time to remission. We endorse the FIGO recommendation for the screening of GTN metastases should be done with chest X-ray.

INTRODUCTION: There is some evidence to suggest that a systemic and central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory response occurs following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) which may be related to the pathophysiology of early brain injury and delayed ischaemic neurological deficit (DIND). The aim of this study was to measure inflammatory mediator levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the days following aSAH and to determine their association with aSAH, DIND and clinical outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Plasma and CSF samples were obtained prospectively from patients with aSAH on days 1-3, 5, 7 and 9 and profiled for interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-15, IL-17, IL-18, macrophage chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Plasma and CSF samples from non-aSAH patients undergoing spinal anaesthesia were used as controls. RESULTS: The CSF levels of all cytokines investigated except for IL-1α were significantly higher in aSAH compared to controls in the first seven days of ictus. CSF levels of IL-1α (p = 0.014), IL-18 (p = 0.016), IL-6 (p = 0.0006) and IL-8 (p = 0.006) showed significant increases in the days following aSAH. Conversely IL-17 demonstrated a decrease. In particular, IL-4 was higher in the CSF of patients who had DIND at all time-points (p = 0.032). Plasma IL-6 and IL-8 levels were higher, and IL-1α levels lower, than controls at most time-points. All mediators demonstrated persistent elevation in the CSF compared to plasma apart from IL-1α and IL-18 which followed the opposite trend. Day 3 plasma IL-6 levels predicted poor outcome at six months (Exp(B) 1.12 1.03-1.22, P = 0.012), although this association was lost in the second analysis incorporating Fisher grade, WFNS grade and age. CONCLUSION: The post aSAH inflammatory response peaks on days 5-7 post ictus and remains largely compartmentalised within the CNS. IL-4 may have a particular association with DIND although its precise role in the pathophysiology of the disorder remains unclear. IL-6 predicted poor outcome but not independently of clinical grade, suggesting that it may be a surrogate marker of early brain injury.

The Lyme Bay marine protected area (MPA) hosts a valuable population of king scallop Pecten maximus L. Recently, an Endozoicomonas-like organism (ELO), infecting host gill epithelial tissue, was associated with king scallop mass mortality events within the Lyme Bay MPA. Currently, very little is known about its transmission and survival outside the host. In this investigation, animals collected outside of reported mortality events showed high levels of ELO infection. Gill tissue disruption and the release of bacteria into the interlamellar space was seen histologically, suggesting shedding of ELO from host animals. To investigate pathogen survival outside the host, infected scallops were maintained in static water for a 24 h period, and then removed. Over the subsequent 8 d, water samples were collected and the quantity of ELO 16S rRNA transcript was measured by TaqManTM quantitative PCR (qPCR). The 16S rRNA transcript quantity was stable outside the host for 6 d before bacteria survival declined 2 logs (7.9 × 108 16S rRNA to 2.3 × 106 transcripts), suggesting that ELO can survive independently outside the host organism. The ELO-specific qPCR probe can therefore be used in future field studies of ELO prevalence within the environment and fauna of the Lyme Bay MPA.

This study provides morphological, ultrastructural and phylogenetic characterization of 2 novel species of Haplosporidia (Haplosporidium echinogammari n. sp. and H. orchestiae n. sp.) infecting amphipods of the genera Echinogammarus and Orchestia collected in southwestern England. Both parasites infect the connective tissues associated with the digestive gland and the tegument, and eventually infect other organs causing disruption of host tissues with associated motor impairment and fitness reduction. Prevalence of infection varied with host species, provenance and season, being as high as 75% for individuals of E. marinus infected with H. echinogammari in June (n = 50). Although no spores were found in any of the infected amphipods examined (n = 82), the morphology of monokaryotic and dikaryotic unicellular stages of the parasites enabled differentiation between the 2 new species. Phylogenetic analysis of the new species based on the small subunit (SSU) rDNA gene placed H. echinogammari close to H. diporeiae in haplosporidian lineage C, and H. orchestiae in a novel branch within Haplosporidium. Genetic diversity of the haplosporidians infecting these and other amphipod species was evaluated and compared to morphological and ultrastructural changes to host tissues. The phylogenetic relationship of haplosporidian infections in other crustacean hosts is discussed after inclusion into the analysis of 25 novel SSU rDNA sequences obtained from crabs, isopods and crayfish.

The edible mussel Mytilus edulis is a major aquaculture commodity in Europe, with 168000 t produced in 2015. A number of abundant, well characterised parasites of the species are known, though none are considered to cause significant mortality. Haplosporida (Rhizaria, Endomyxa) is an order of protistan parasites of aquatic invertebrates, the best studied of which are the oyster pathogens Haplosporidium nelsoni and Bonamia ostreae. While these species are well characterised within their hosts, the diversity, life-cycle and modes of transmission of haplosporidians are very poorly understood. Haplosporidian parasites have previously been reported from Mytilus spp., however the majority of these remain uncharacterised, and no molecular data exist for any species. In this study, we identified 2 novel haplosporidian parasites of M. edulis present in the UK. The first of these, observed by light microscopy and in situ hybridisation infecting the gills, mantle, gonadal tubules and digestive connective tissues of mussels in the Tamar estuary, England, we describe as Minchinia mytili on the basis of 18S sequence data. The second, observed infecting a single archive specimen collected in Loch Spelve, Mull, Scotland, infects the foot muscle, gills and connective tissue of the digestive gland. Sequence data places this parasite in an uncharacterised clade of sequences amplified from tropical bivalve guts and water samples, sister to H. nelsoni. Screening of water and sediment samples collected at the sample site in the Tamar estuary revealed the presence of both sequence types in the water column, suggesting host-free or planktonic life stages.

RESUMEN

Current evidence about the impact of specialized sex offender treatment on reoffending remains inconsistent, drawing attention to the need to focus more on those program characteristics that potentially moderate outcome. This review considers current professional perspectives and evidence on two defining aspects of treatment: its intensity and timing. It is concluded that insufficient evidence currently exists to articulate best practice in this area and there is a pressing need to collect empirical evidence about the effectiveness of different intensity treatments offered at different stages of sentence.

One of the fastest growing fisheries in the UK is the king scallop (Pecten maximus L.), also currently rated as the second most valuable fishery. Mass mortality events in scallops have been reported worldwide, often with the causative agent(s) remaining uncharacterized. In May 2013 and 2014, two mass mortality events affecting king scallops were recorded in the Lyme Bay marine protected area (MPA) in Southwest England. Histopathological examination showed gill epithelial tissues infected with intracellular microcolonies (IMCs) of bacteria resembling Rickettsia-like organisms (RLOs), often with bacteria released in vascular spaces. Large colonies were associated with cellular and tissue disruption of the gills. Ultrastructural examination confirmed the intracellular location of these organisms in affected epithelial cells. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the putative IMCs obtained from infected king scallop gill samples, collected from both mortality events, were identical and had a 99.4% identity to 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained from "Candidatus Endonucleobacter bathymodioli" and 95% with Endozoicomonas species. In situ hybridization assays using 16S rRNA gene probes confirmed the presence of the sequenced IMC gene in the gill tissues. Additional DNA sequences of the bacterium were obtained using high-throughput (Illumina) sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis identified over 1,000 genes with high similarity to protein sequences from Endozoicomonas spp. (ranging from 77 to 87% identity). Specific PCR assays were developed and applied to screen for the presence of IMC 16S rRNA gene sequences in king scallop gill tissues collected at the Lyme Bay MPA during 2015 and 2016. There was 100% prevalence of the IMCs in these gill tissues, and the 16S rRNA gene sequences identified were identical to the sequence found during the previous mortality event.IMPORTANCE Molluscan mass mortalities associated with IMCs have been reported worldwide for many years; however, apart from histological and ultrastructural characterization, characterization of the etiological agents is limited. In the present work, we provide detailed molecular characterization of an Endozoicomonas-like organism (ELO) associated with an important commercial scallop species.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical presentation and incidence of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) among cases of complete mole (CM) and partial mole (PM) from 1994 to 2013. METHODS: This study included all cases of patients with CM and PM from our trophoblastic disease center between 1994 and 2013. Their clinical and pathologic reports were reviewed. Gestational age at evacuation, features of clinical presentation, human chorionic gonadotropin levels, and the rate of progression to GTN were compared. RESULTS: The median gestational age at evacuation was 9 weeks for CM and 12 weeks for PM (P < 0.001). Patients with PM had lower pre-evacuation serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels (P < 0.001), and they were also less likely to present with vaginal bleeding (P < 0.001), biochemical hyperthyroidism (P < 0.001), anemia (P < 0.001), uterine size greater than dates (P < 0.001), and hyperemesis (P = 0.002). Consequently, patients with PM were less likely to have been clinically diagnosed as moles compared with CM prior to uterine evacuation (P < 0.001). The development of GTN occurred in 17.7% (33/186) and 4.1% (7/169) of patients with CM and PM, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that, at our center over the past 20 years, both CM and PM were usually evacuated in the first trimester of pregnancy. Because CM more commonly presents with the signs and symptoms of molar disease than PM, CM is more commonly diagnosed prior to evacuation.

BACKGROUND: In Nigeria, reports on the prevalence of modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors are scarce. In addition, socio-economic status (SES), an important component of the socioeconomic gradient in CVD and its risk factors has not been clearly elucidated. This study sought to assess the prevalence of CVD risk factors and how the difference in prevalence and accessibility to CVD risk screening across income levels and educational backgrounds contributes to disease diagnosis in rural and urban Nigerian adults. METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out on a sociocultural ethnic group of persons living in rural and urban settings. All participants were aged ≥ 18 years. The WHO STEPS questionnaire was used to document the demographics, history of previous medical check-up or screening, anthropometric and biochemical measurements of the participants. Average income level and educational status were indicators used to assess the impact of SES. Multivariate analyses were performed to assess any difference between the geographical locations and SES indicators, and prevalence of CVD risk factors and access to CVD risk screening. RESULTS: The 422 participants (273 females and 149 males) [corrected] had mean age (± standard deviation) of 38.3 ± 20.5 and 42.9 ± 20.7 years, respectively. Only total cholesterol (p = 0.001), triglyceride (p = 0.005), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) (p < 0.0001), body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.03) and average income rate (p = 0.01) showed significant difference between gender groups. Overall prevalence of prediabetes (4.9%), diabetes (5.4%), hypertension (35.7%), low HDL (17.8%), hypertriglyceridemia (23.2%), hypercholesterolemia (38.1%) and central obesity of 52.2% was recorded. Except between total cholesterol (p = 0.042) and HDL (p = 0.017), other CVD risk factors did not show a statistical significance across income levels. Participants with 'university and postgraduate education' had higher access to blood pressure and blood glucose screening compared to other educational groups; and this showed a statistical significance. CONCLUSION: This study has shown that a significant number of modifiable CVD risk factors exist in the rural and urban migrants of an adult Nigerian population. While income level did not affect the CVD risk factor prevalence, it did affect accessibility to CVD risk screening. There is a need for access to diagnosis of modifiable risk factors at all levels of society.

Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, the 'demon shrimp', is an amphipod native to the Ponto-Caspian region. This species invaded the UK in 2012 and has become widely established. Dikerogammarus haemobaphes has the potential to introduce non-native pathogens into the UK, creating a potential threat to native fauna. This study describes a novel species of microsporidian parasite infecting 72.8% of invasive D. haemobaphes located in the River Trent, UK. The microsporidium infection was systemic throughout the host; mainly targeting the sarcolemma of muscle tissues. Electron microscopy revealed this parasite to be diplokaryotic and have 7-9 turns of the polar filament. The microsporidium is placed into the 'Cucumispora' genus based on host histopathology, fine detail parasite ultrastructure, a highly similar life-cycle and SSU rDNA sequence phylogeny. Using this data this novel microsporidian species is named Cucumispora ornata, where 'ornata' refers to the external beading present on the mature spore stage of this organism. Alongside a taxonomic discussion, the presence of a novel Cucumispora sp. in the United Kingdom is discussed and related to the potential control of invasive Dikerogammarus spp. in the UK and the health of native species which may come into contact with this parasite.

RESUMEN

Patients recovered from subarachnoid hemorrhage can be assessed for neuropsychological dysfunction using postal questionnaires. We assessed 214 patients using various tests of memory, mood and strategic thinking. Patients in good outcome categories (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] 0-1) nevertheless exhibited mood disorder (28%), memory deficit and executive dysfunction (20%). Return to work (49%) was most influenced by previous employment status, Rankin scale and mood.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A single-center prospective randomized controlled trial has been conducted to determine if lumbar drainage of cerebrospinal fluid after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage reduces the prevalence of delayed ischemic neurological deficit and improves clinical outcome. METHODS: Patients with World Federation of Neurological Surgeons Grade 1 to 3 aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and modified Fisher Grades 2, 3, 4, and 3+4 were randomized to either the study group of standard therapy plus insertion of a lumbar drain or the control group of standard therapy alone. The primary outcome measure was the prevalence of delayed ischemic neurological deficit. RESULTS: Two hundred ten patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (166 female, 44 male; median age, 54 years; interquartile range, 45-62 years) were recruited into the control (n=105) and study (n=105) groups of the trial. World Federation of Neurological Surgeons grade was: 1 (n=139), 2 (n=60), and 3 (n=11); Fisher grade was: 2 (n=87), 3 (n=85), and 4 (n=38). The prevalence of delayed ischemic neurological deficit was 35.2% and 21.0% in the control and study groups, respectively (P=0.021). The prevalence of a modified Rankin Scale score of 4, 5, or 6 at Day 10 and 6 months, respectively, was 62.5% and 18.6% in the control group and 44.8% and 19.8% in the study group (P=0.009 and 0.83, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Lumbar drainage of cerebrospinal fluid after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage has been shown to reduce the prevalence of delayed ischemic neurological deficit and improve early clinical outcome but failed to improve outcome at 6 months after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Domestic violence protection orders are civil court orders intended to protect victim/survivors from further violence by prohibiting alleged perpetrators from engaging in threatened or actual violence or harassment of victim/survivors and their children. However, their availability and ultimately their effectiveness is limited by complex procedural requirements and court accessibility barriers that victim/survivors can find intimidating, confusing, and unsafe, and that contribute to delays between lodgment of an application and the making of an intervention order by the court. This study examined the experiences of applicants who used either a conventional court process or an online application process that was trialed in three courts in Victoria, Australia. We examined court data on 791 applicants who sought an intervention order at the three courts during the study period, and interviewed 28 applicants including 12 who had applied online. We also examined the impact of the online process on court workloads and risk assessments, and conducted interviews and focus groups with magistrates and registry staff at each of the three trial locations. Compared with the court registry process, the online application was rated as simpler and easier to understand and less stressful. Online applicants also reported that the application process was more accessible and enhanced their sense of agency. The online application process also reduced the workload of court staff and resulted in faster case processing, with online applicants reaching the court hearing stage nearly 2 weeks earlier than paper-based applicants. However, we did not find that the online application process provided earlier or better risk identification.

In the last decade, an array of smartphone apps have been designed to prevent crime, violence, and abuse. The evidence base of these apps has, however, yet to analyzed systematically. To rectify this, the aims of this review were (1) to establish the extent, range, and nature of research into smartphone apps with a primary crime prevention function; (2) to locate gaps in the primary crime prevention app literature; and (3) to develop a typology of primary crime prevention apps. Employing a scoping review methodology and following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, studies were identified via Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. We included English-language research published between 2008 and 2020 that examined smartphone applications designed explicitly for primary crime prevention. Sixty-one publications met our criteria for review, out of an initial sample of 151 identified. Our review identified six types of crime prevention app examined in these publications: self-surveillance apps, decision aid apps, child-tracking apps, educational apps, crime-mapping/alert apps, and crime reporting apps. The findings of our review indicate that most of these forms of primary crime prevention apps have yet to be rigorously evaluated and many are not evidence-based in their design. Consequently, our review indicates that recent enthusiasm over primary crime prevention apps is not supported by an adequate evidence base.

Justice services have begun to integrate the use of mobile applications into treatment, support, and rehabilitative programs for forensic clients. One such application that been adopted to support forensic clients is "eRecovery": a smartphone application that provides clients recovering from a substance addiction with support for managing relapse. In this article, we report on evaluation findings from a trial of eRecovery in an Australian Community Justice Centre, and reflect on several issues relating to fostering and sustaining client engagement with similar applications within forensic and justice settings. We propose the Service Design Engagement Model to organize, visualize, and describe the stages and factors important to adoption, appropriation, and on-going routine use of the software by forensic clients. The model recognizes the role of contextual and environmental factors in supporting users through the early stages of engagement, and the importance of user agency in longer-term engagement with therapeutic apps.

Di- and poly-homo/heteronuclear complexes have great potential as anticancer drugs. Here, we report their reactivity, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding and cleavage interactions, in vitro cytotoxicity, and in vivo zebrafish embryo toxicity of [(phen)2Ru(µ-L)PtCl2]2+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and L = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine, bpp, C1 ; 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline, bpq, C2ial ; 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)benzo[g]quinoxaline, bbq, C3 ) anticancer prodrugs. The substitution reactivity increases from C1 to C3 owing to an increase in the π-conjugation on the bridging chelate which facilitates π-back bonding. As a result, the electrophilicity index on the C3 complex increases than that on the complex C2 followed by C1 which leads to higher rates of substitution and thus the reactivity order follows C1 < C2 < C3 . The coordination of Ru at one end of each of the complexes enhances water solubility. Moreover, the charge addition of the two metal ions increases their reactivity toward substitution in addition to ensuring electrostatic interactions at target sites such as the DNA/BSA. Spectroscopic (UV-vis absorption and fluorescence quenching) titration and viscosity measurement results of the interactions of C1/2/3 with CT-DNA established the formation of stable, nonconvent C1/2/3 -DNA adducts with DNA most likely via the intercalative binding mode. Furthermore, studies with BSA showed a good binding affinity of these complexes owing to hydrophobic interactions with the coordinated ligands. The interactions of these complexes with DNA/BSA are in line with the reactivity trend, and all these experimental findings were further supported by molecular docking analysis. In vitro MTT cytotoxic activities on human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 revealed that all the complexes have high cytotoxicity activity (IC50 > 9 µM); furthermore, the selectivity index and SI values were higher (>3). Complex C3 showed the highest cytotoxicity with IC50 = 3.1 µM and SI value (5.55) against MCF7 cell lines and these values were comparable to those of the cisplatin (IC50 and SI values are 5.0 µM and 4.02, respectively). In vivo toxicological assessments on zebrafish embryos revealed that all the Ru-Pt complexes (CI/2/3 ) have poor embryo acute toxic effects over 96 h postfertilization, hpf with LC50 > 65.2 µM. The complex C3 has shown the lowest embryo toxicity (LC50 = 148.8 µM), which is comparable to that of commercial cisplatin (LC50 = 181.1 µM). Based on the cytotoxicity results, complexes C2 and C3 could be considered for further development as chemotherapeutic agents against MCF breast cancer cells.

Urbanized coral reefs experience anthropogenic disturbances caused by coastal development, pollution, and nutrient runoff, resulting in turbid, marginal conditions in which only certain species can persist. Mortality effects are exacerbated by increasingly regular thermal stress events, leading to shifts towards novel communities dominated by habitat generalists and species with low structural complexity.There is limited data on the turnover processes that occur due to this convergence of anthropogenic stressors, and how novel urban ecosystems are structured both at the community and functional levels. As such, it is unclear how they will respond to future disturbance events.Here, we examine the patterns of coral reef community change and determine whether ecosystem functions provided by specialist species are lost post-disturbance. We present a comparison of community and functional trait-based changes for scleractinian coral genera and reef fish species assemblages subject to coastal development, coastal modification, and mass bleaching between two time periods, 1975-1976 and 2018, in Nakagusuku Bay, Okinawa, Japan.We observed an increase in fish habitat generalists, a dominance shift from branching to massive/sub-massive corals and increasing site-based coral genera richness between years. Fish and coral communities significantly reassembled, but functional trait-based multivariate space remained constant, indicating a turnover of species with similar traits. A compression of coral habitat occurred, with shallow (<5 m) and deep (>8 m) coral genera shifting towards the mid-depths (5-8 m).We show that although reef species assemblages altered post disturbance, new communities retained similar ecosystem functions. This result could be linked to the stressors experienced by urban reefs, which reflect those that will occur at an increasing frequency globally in the near future. Yet, even after shifts to disturbed communities, these fully functioning reef systems may maintain high conservation value.
