RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a safe and accurate approach to achieve needle insertion for electromyography (EMG) of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) I and II muscles by identifying the anatomic relationship between the palmaris longus (PL) tendon, FDP muscle, and neurovascular bundle using ultrasonography. DESIGN: Descriptive study SETTING: Department of physical medicine and rehabilitation. PARTICIPANTS: Healthy individuals (age, 20-70y) without any diseases (N=29; 15 men, 14 women; 58 forearms). INTERVENTIONS: Ultrasonography. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The FDP I and II muscles were transversely scanned on the volar aspect of the forearm at the junction of the middle and distal third between the medial epicondyle and ulnar styloid process. The distances and angles from the medial border of the PL tendon to FDP I, FDP II, and median nerve were measured. RESULTS: The probability of damage to the neurovascular structures and the accuracy of entering the FDP I and II muscles were calculated for 3 imaginary needle insertion angles (61.7°, 100.6°, and 90°). When the needle was inserted at an angle of 61.7°, it reached FDP I with an accuracy of 91.4%. Upon needle insertions at 90° and 100.6°, the needle reached FDP II with accuracies of 90% and 89.6%, respectively. In all 3 cases (61.7°, 90°, and 100.6°), there was no chance of penetrating the blood vessels or nerves. CONCLUSION: EMG of FDP I and II can be performed precisely and safely with the anterior approach at the distal one-third between the medial epicondyle and ulnar styloid process using the PL tendon.

RESUMEN

Here we demonstrate the fabrication of SnO(x) thin-film transistors (TFTs), where SnO(x) thin films are deposited as an active channel layer by DC magnetron sputtering. We analyzed the effects of the oxygen partial pressure ratio and post-deposition heat treatment (PDHT) on the characteristics of the SnO(x) thin films. We found improved performance of the TFTs obtained by using interface modification with the optimized deposition condition of SnO(x) thin films. These results are helpful for fabricating oxide-TFTs, including simple binary oxide semiconductors, as an active channel layer.

Background: Gait problems are critical impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are related to increased risk of fall and negatively impact activities of daily life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that can modify the cortical excitability of gait-related brain regions. In this study, we investigated whether multichannel tDCS with simultaneous treadmill gait training could improve gait in PD. Methods: Twenty-four patients with PD were assigned randomly to a real or sham tDCS group. Before intervention, one patient of the real tDCS group was dropped out, leaving 23 patients to be analyzed in this study. Each patient underwent 30 min of treadmill gait training for 10 sessions over four consecutive weeks. Multichannel 4x1 tDCS was applied using five 6-cm-diameter round electrodes. One anode was placed on the CZ, and four cathodes were positioned symmetrically over the FZ, C5, C6, and PZ. Anodal tDCS (2mA) and sham tDCS were delivered for 20 min. The secondary outcomes were gait performance, as measured by the timed up and go test (TUG) and freezing of gait questionnaire (FOG-Q), and balance was assessed using the dynamic gait index (DGI), Berg balance scale (BBS), and functional reach test (FRT). Motor and non-motor performance of patients with PD were assessed using the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Participants were assessed before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and 4 weeks after completion of the intervention. Results: The real tDCS group showed a significant improvement in the 10-m walk test, but the sham group did not. Among the secondary outcome measures, MDS-UPDRS part II, TUG, and BBS were improved only in the real tDCS group. Particularly, MDS-UPDRS part II showed a significant group*time interaction effect, indicating that real tDCS demonstrated a better effect on the activities of daily living patients with PD. Conclusions: The results of this pilot study suggest that multichannel tDCS applied on the leg motor cortex during treadmill gait training is a safe and effective means to improve gait velocity in patients with PD. Additional rigorous, large-sample, multicenter, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the effect of tDCS as a therapeutic adjunct for gait rehabilitation of patients with PD.

The cell-surface protein antigen I/II (Ag I/II) is expressed in oral streptococci, which are known as the causative agent of a number of diseases including dental caries, endocarditis, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Consequently, monoclonal antibodies (MAb) capable of recognizing the streptococcal Ag I/II protein could be a useful tool for the diagnosis and cure of these diseases. In this study, a previously generated monoclonal anti-Ag I/II antibody, ckAg I/II, was used to detect a small amount of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) surface antigen Ag I/II. The ckAg I/II was proved to be very sensitive and able to detect as little as 1 ng of recombinant Ag I/II protein within 5 min and Ag I/II in saliva within 10 min, as well as native Ag I/II in 20 µL of culture supernatant by ELISA. These results suggest that ckAg I/II can be used as a fast and efficient diagnostic tool to detect Ag I/II.
