RESUMEN

Due to their long lifespan, trees and bushes develop higher order of branches in a perennial manner. In contrast to a tall tree, with a clearly defined main stem and branching order, a bush is shorter and has a less apparent main stem and branching pattern. To address the developmental basis of these two forms, we studied several naturally occurring architectural variants in silver birch (Betula pendula). Using a candidate gene approach, we identified a bushy kanttarelli variant with a loss-of-function mutation in the BpMAX1 gene required for strigolactone (SL) biosynthesis. While kanttarelli is shorter than the wild type (WT), it has the same number of primary branches, whereas the number of secondary branches is increased, contributing to its bush-like phenotype. To confirm that the identified mutation was responsible for the phenotype, we phenocopied kanttarelli in transgenic BpMAX1::RNAi birch lines. SL profiling confirmed that both kanttarelli and the transgenic lines produced very limited amounts of SL. Interestingly, the auxin (IAA) distribution along the main stem differed between WT and BpMAX1::RNAi. In the WT, the auxin concentration formed a gradient, being higher in the uppermost internodes and decreasing toward the basal part of the stem, whereas in the transgenic line, this gradient was not observed. Through modeling, we showed that the different IAA distribution patterns may result from the difference in the number of higher-order branches and plant height. Future studies will determine whether the IAA gradient itself regulates aspects of plant architecture.

Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, is able to switch between two distinct cell types: white and opaque. While white-to-opaque switching is typically repressed by the a1/α2 heterodimer in MTLa/α cells, it was recently reported that switching can also occur in some natural MTLa/α strains under certain environmental conditions. However, the regulatory program governing white-opaque switching in MTLa/α cells is not fully understood. Here, we collected 90 clinical isolates of C. albicans, 16 of which possess the ability to form opaque colonies. Among the known regulators implicated in white-opaque switching, only OFI1 exhibited significantly higher expression in these 16 strains compared to the reference strain SC5314. Importantly, ectopic expression of OFI1 in both clinical isolates and laboratory strains promoted switching frequency even in the absence of N-acetylglucosamine and high CO2 , the optimal condition for white-to-opaque switching in MTLa/α strains. Deleting OFI1 resulted in a reduction in opaque-formation frequency and the stability of the opaque cell in MTLa/α cells. Ofi1 binds to the promoters of WOR1 and WOR3 to induce their expression, which facilitates white-to-opaque switching. Ofi1 is conserved across the CTG species. Altogether, our study reported the identification of a transcription factor Ofi1 as the critical regulator that promotes white-to-opaque switching in natural MTLa/α isolates of C. albicans.

Candida albicans is a normal resident of humans and also a prevalent fungal pathogen. Lactate, a nonfermentative carbon source available in numerous anatomical niches, can be used by C. albicans as a carbon source. However, the key regulator(s) involved in this process remain unknown. Here, through a genetic screen, we report the identification of a transcription factor Zcf24 that is specifically required for lactate utilization in C. albicans. Zcf24 is responsible for the induction of CYB2, a gene encoding lactate dehydrogenase that is essential for lactate catabolism, in response to lactate. Chromatin immunoprecipitation showed a significantly higher signal of Zcf24 on the CYB2 promoter in lactate-grown cells than that in glucose-grown cells. Genome-wide transcription profiling indicates that, in addition to CYB2, Zcf24 regulates genes involved in the ß-oxidation of fatty acids, iron transport, and drug transport. Surprisingly, deleting ZCF24 confers enhanced commensal fitness. This could be attributed to Crz1-activated ß-glucan masking in the zcf24 mutant. The orthologs of Zcf24 are distributed in species most closely to C. albicans and some filamentous fungal species. Altogether, Zcf24 is the first transcription factor identified to date that regulates lactate catabolism in C. albicans and it is also involved in the regulation of commensalism.

Delafloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic to treat skin infections, exhibits a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The first randomized, open-label phase I clinical trial was conducted to assess the safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of intravenous delafloxacin in the Chinese population. A population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) model based on the clinical trial was conducted by NONMEM software. Monte Carlo simulation was performed to evaluate the antibacterial effects of delafloxacin at different doses in different Chinese populations. The PK characteristics of delafloxacin were best described by a three-compartment model with mixed linear and nonlinear clearance. Body weight was included as a covariate in the model. We simulated the AUC0-24h in a steady state at five doses in patient groups of various weights. The results indicated that for patients weighing 70 kg and treated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, a minimum dose of 300 mg achieved a PTA > 90% at MIC90 of 0.25 µg/mL, suggesting an ideal bactericidal effect. For patients weighing less than 60 kg, a dose of 200 mg achieved a PTA > 90% at MIC90 of 0.25 µg/mL, also suggesting an ideal bactericidal effect. Additionally, this trial demonstrated the high safety of delafloxacin in single-dose and multiple-dose groups of Chinese. Delafloxacin (300 mg, q12h, iv) was recommended for achieving optimal efficacy in Chinese bacterial skin infections patients. To ensure optimal efficacy, an individualized dose of 200 mg (q12h, iv) could be advised for patients weighing less than 60 kg, and 300 mg (q12h, iv) for those weighing more than 60 kg.

DNA has been implicated as an important biomarker for the diagnosis of bacterial infections. Herein, we developed a streamlined methodology that uses diatom frustules (DFs) to liberate and capture bacterial DNA and allows direct downstream amplification tests without any lysis, washing, or elution steps. Unlike most conventional DNA isolation methods that rely on cell lysis to release bacterial DNA, DFs can trigger the oxidative stress response of bacterial cells to promote bacterial membrane vesicle formation and DNA release by generating reactive oxygen species in aqueous solutions. Due to the hierarchical porous structure, DFs provided high DNA capture efficiency exceeding 80% over a wide range of DNA amounts from 10 pg to 10 ng, making only 10 µg DFs sufficient for each test. Since laborious liquid handling steps are not required, the entire DNA sample preparation process using DFs can be completed within 3 min. The diagnostic use of this DF-based methodology was illustrated, which showed that the DNA of the pathogenic bacteria in serum samples was isolated by DFs and directly detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) at concentrations as low as 102 CFU/mL, outperforming the most used approaches based on solid-phase DNA extraction. Furthermore, most of the bacterial cells were still alive after DNA isolation using DFs, providing the possibility of recycling samples for storage and further diagnosis. The proposed DF-based methodology is anticipated to simplify bacterial infection diagnosis and be broadly applied to various medical diagnoses and biological research.

The CARMA-BCL10-MALT1 (CBM) signalosome functions as a pivotal supramolecular module, integrating diverse receptor-induced signaling pathways to regulate BCL10-dependent NF-kB activation in innate and adaptive immunity. Conversely, the API2-MALT1 fusion protein in t(11; 18)(q21; q21) MALT lymphoma constitutively induces BCL10-independent NF-kB activation. MALT1 dimer formation is indispensable for the requisite proteolytic activity and is critical for NF-kB activation regulation in both scenarios. However, the molecular assembly of MALT1 individual domains in CBM activation remains elusive. Here we report the crystal structure of the MALT1 death domain (DD) at a resolution of 2.1 Å, incorporating reconstructed residues in previously disordered loops 1 and 2. Additionally, we observe a conformational regulation element (CRE) regulating stem-helix formation in NLRPs pyrin (PYD) within the MALT1 DD structure. The structure reveals a stem-helix-mediated dimer further corroborated in solution. To elucidate how the BCL10 filament facilitates MALT1 dimerization, we reconstitute a BCL10-CARD-MALT1-DD-IG1-IG2 complex model. We propose a N+7 rule for BCL10-dependent MALT1 dimerization via the IG1-IG2 domain and for MALT1-dependent cleavage in trans. Biochemical data further indicates concentration-dependent dimerization of the MALT1 IG1-IG2 domain, facilitating MALT1 dimerization in BCL10-independent manner. Our findings provide a structural and biochemical foundation for understanding MALT1 dimeric mechanisms, shedding light on potential BCL10-independent MALT1 dimer formation and high-order BCL10-MALT1 assembly.

In acidic soils, aluminum (Al) toxicity inhibits the growth and development of plant roots and affects nutrient and water absorption, leading to reduced yield and quality. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate and identify candidate genes for Al tolerance and elucidate their physiological and molecular mechanisms under Al stress. In this study, we identified a new gene OsAlR3 regulating Al tolerance, and analyzed its mechanism from physiological, transcriptional and metabolic levels. Compared with the WT, malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content were significantly increased, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and citric acid (CA) content were significantly decreased in the osalr3 mutant lines when exposed to Al stress. Under Al stress, the osalr3 exhibited decreased expression of antioxidant-related genes and lower organic acid content compared with WT. Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analysis showed the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway plays an important role in OsAlR3-mediated Al tolerance. Exogenous CA and oxalic acid (OA) could increase total root length and enhance the antioxidant capacity in the mutant lines under Al stress. Conclusively, we found a new gene OsAlR3 that positively regulates Al tolerance by promoting the chelation of Al ions through the secretion of organic acids, and increasing the expression of antioxidant genes.

Organic cathode materials show excellent prospects for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity. However, the high solubility and low electrical conductivity of organic compounds result in inferior cycle stability and rate performance. Herein, an extended conjugated organic small molecule is reported that combines electroactive quinone with piperazine by the structural designability of organic materials, 2,3,7,8-tetraamino-5,10-dihydrophenazine-1,4,6,9-tetraone (TDT). Through intermolecular condensation reaction, many redox-active groups C═O and extended conjugated structures are introduced without sacrificing the specific capacity, which ensures the high capacity of the electrode and enhances rate performance. The abundant NH2 groups can form intermolecular hydrogen bonds with the C═O groups to enhance the intermolecular interactions, resulting in lower solubility and higher stability. The TDT cathode delivers a high initial capacity of 293 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1 and maintains 90 mAh g-1 at an extremely high current density of 70 A g-1. The TDT || Na-intercalated hard carbon (Na-HC) full cells provide an average capacity of 210 mAh g-1 during 100 cycles at 500 mA g-1 and deliver a capacity of 120 mAh g-1 at 8 A g-1.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a cold-sensitive species that often faces cold stress, which adversely affects yield productivity and quality. However, the genetic basis for low-temperature adaptation in rice remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that 2 functional polymorphisms in O. sativa SEC13 Homolog 1 (OsSEH1), encoding a WD40-repeat nucleoporin, between the 2 subspecies O. sativa japonica and O. sativa indica rice, may have facilitated cold adaptation in japonica rice. We show that OsSEH1 of the japonica variety expressed in OsSEH1MSD plants (transgenic line overexpressing the OsSEH1 allele from Mangshuidao [MSD], cold-tolerant landrace) has a higher affinity for O. sativa metallothionein 2b (OsMT2b) than that of OsSEH1 of indica. This high affinity of OsSEH1MSD for OsMT2b results in inhibition of OsMT2b degradation, with decreased accumulation of reactive oxygen species and increased cold tolerance. Transcriptome analysis indicates that OsSEH1 positively regulates the expression of the genes encoding dehydration-responsive element-binding transcription factors, i.e. OsDREB1 genes, and induces the expression of multiple cold-regulated genes to enhance cold tolerance. Our findings highlight a breeding resource for improving cold tolerance in rice.

Lidar using active light illumination is capable of capturing depth and reflectivity information of target scenes. Among various technologies, streak tube imaging lidar (STIL) has garnered significant attention due to its high resolution and excellent precision. The echo signals of a STIL system using single laser pulse are often overwhelmed by noise in complex environments, making it difficult to discern the range of the target. By combining high-frequency laser pulses with the repetitive sweep circuit, the STIL system enables efficient detection of few-photons signal in weak-light environments. Additionally, we have developed a robust algorithm for estimating the depth and reflectivity images of targets. The results demonstrate that this lidar system achieves a depth resolution better than 0.5 mm and a ranging accuracy of 95 um. Furthermore, the imaging of natural scenes also validates the exceptional 3D imaging capability of this system.

Pathogenic bacterial membrane proteins (MPs) are a class of vaccine and antibiotic development targets with widespread clinical application. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of MPs poses a challenge to fold correctly in living cells. Herein, we present a comprehensive method to improve the soluble form of MP antigen by rationally designing multi-epitope chimeric antigen (ChA) and screening two classes of protein-assisting folding element. The study uses a homologous protein antigen as a functional scaffold to generate a ChA possessing four epitopes from transferrin-binding protein A of Glaesserella parasuis. Our engineered strain, which co-expresses P17 tagged-ChA and endogenous chaperones groEL-ES, yields a 0.346 g/L highly soluble ChA with the property of HPS-positive serum reaction. Moreover, the protein titer of ChA reaches 4.27 g/L with >90% soluble proportion in 5-L bioreactor, which is the highest titer reported so far. The results highlight a timely approach to design and improve the soluble expression of MP antigen in industrially viable applications.

AIMS: Evidence regarding impact of protein intake distribution on skeletal muscle mass in older adults is limited and inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the relationship of evenness of dietary protein distribution and number of meals exceeding a threshold with appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) in healthy and free-living Chinese older adults. METHODS: Repeated measured data of 5689 adult participants aged ≥ 60 years from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) 2015 and 2018 waves were analyzed. Mixed-effects linear regression model was performed to examine the relationship between coefficient of variance (CV) of protein intake across meals, number of meals ≥ 0.4 g protein/kg BW and ASM, respectively. Analyses were conducted separately for male and female. RESULTS: The average CV of protein intake in each wave was in the range of 0.34-0.35. More than 40% male and female participants in each wave had no meal reaching 0.4 g protein/kg BW. Female participants in the highest quartile of protein intake CV had significantly lower ASM (ß = -0.18, 95%CI = -0.32, -0.04) compared with those in the lowest quartile, after adjustment for multiple confounders. Significant negative trends were observed across dietary protein CV quartiles with ASM both in male (P trend = 0.043) and female (P trend = 0.007). Significant positive association between number of meals exceeding 0.4 g protein /kg BW and relative ASM were observed in females (2 meals vs. 0 meal: ß = 0.003, 95%CI = 0.0007,0.006;≥3 meals vs. 0 meal: ß = 0.008, 95%CI = 0.003,0.013), after adjusting for multiple covariates. CONCLUSIONS: A more even-distributed protein intake pattern and more meals reaching protein intake threshold were respectively associated with higher appendicular skeletal muscle mass in healthy and free-living older Chinese adults. Prospective studies and intervention trials are needed to confirm these cross-sectional findings.

Rational coupling of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is extremely important for practical overall water splitting; however, it is still challenging to construct such bifunctional heterostructures. Herein, a CeO2/W@Co-MOF/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst was prepared via a two-step in situ growth method involving an electrodeposition process. The incorporation of the W element enhanced the electronic interaction and enlarged the electrochemical surface area. After the electrodeposition of CeO2, the obtained CeO2/W@Co-MOF/NF possessed abundant heterointerfaces with a modulated local distribution, which promoted water dissociation and rapid electrocatalytic kinetics. In particular, it required very low overpotentials of 239 mV and 87 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in OER and HER, respectively. A corresponding alkaline electrolysis cell afforded a cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2 to boost overall water splitting. This work provides a feasible strategy to fabricate MOF-based complexes and explores their possible use as bifunctional catalysts toward overall water splitting.

Poor conductivity of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) limits their applications in overall water splitting. Surface sulfur (S) doping transition metal hydroxides would effectively improve the conductivity and adjust the electronic structure to generate additional electroactive sites. Herein, we fabricated a Ni-S/Co-MOF/NF catalyst by electroplating a Ni-S film on the 3D flower-like Co-MOF. Because the 3D flower-like structures are covered in Ni foam, the high exposure of active sites and good conductivity are obtained. Moreover, the synergistic effect between Ni-S and Co-MOF contributes to the redistribution of electrons in the catalyst, which can then optimize the catalytic performance of the material. The obtained 3D flower-like Ni-S/Co-MOF/NF demonstrates excellent activity toward both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH, which only requires a low overpotential of 248 mV@10 mA cm-2 for the OER and 127 mV@10 mA cm-2 for the HER, respectively. At a current density of 10 mA cm-2, the Ni-S/Co-MOF/NF‖Ni-S/Co-MOF/NF requires a low cell voltage of 1.59 V to split overall water splitting.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of vulvar low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (VLSIL) with persistent symptoms. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 24 VLSIL patients who underwent FUS treatment. At each follow-up visit, the clinical response was assessed including changes in symptoms and signs. In addition, the histological response was assessed based on the vulvar biopsy results of the 3rd follow-up. Clinical and histological response were assessed to elucidate the efficacy. RESULTS: A total of 22 patients completed follow-up and post-treatment pathological biopsies. After treatment, the clinical scores of itching decreased from 2.55 ± 0.51 to 0.77 ± 0.81 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the clinical response rate and histological response rate were 86.4% and 81.8%, respectively. Only two cured patients indicated recurrence in the 3rd and 4th year during the follow-up period and achieved cure after re-treatment. In terms of adverse effects, only one patient developed ulcers after treatment, which healed after symptomatic anti-inflammatory treatment without scarring, and no other treatment complications were found in any patients. None of the patients developed a malignant transformation during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that FUS is feasible, effective, and safe for treating VLSIL patients with persistent symptoms, providing a new solution for the noninvasive treatment of symptomatic VLSIL.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence for an association between the gut microbiome and endometriosis. However, their causal relationship and the mediating role of lipid metabolism remain unclear. METHODS: Using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationships between gut microbiome and endometriosis. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary model, with other MR models used for comparison. Sensitivity analysis based on different statistical assumptions was used to evaluate whether the results were robust. A two-step MR analysis was further conducted to explore the mediating effects of lipids, by integrating univariable MR and the multivariate MR method based on the Bayesian model averaging method (MR-BMA). RESULTS: We identified four possible intestinal bacteria genera associated with the risk of endometriosis through the IVW method, including Eubacterium ruminantium group (odds ratio [OR] = 0.881, 95% CI: 0.795-0.976, P = 0.015), Anaerotruncus (OR = 1.252, 95% CI: 1.028-1.525, P = 0.025), Olsenella (OR = 1.110, 95% CI: 1.007-1.223, P = 0.036), and Oscillospira (OR = 1.215, 95% CI: 1.014-1.456, P = 0.035). The further two-step MR analysis identified that the effect of Olsenella on endometriosis was mediated by triglycerides (proportion mediated: 3.3%; 95% CI = 1.5-5.1%). CONCLUSION: This MR study found evidence for specific gut microbiomes associated with the risk of endometriosis, which might partially be mediated by triglycerides.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid development of China's chemical industry, although researchers have developed many methods in the field of chemical safety, the situation of chemical safety in China is still not optimistic. How to prevent accidents has always been the focus of scholars' attention. METHODS: Based on the characteristics of chemical enterprises and the Heinrich accident triangle, this paper developed the organizational-level accident triangle, which divides accidents into group-level, unit-level, and workshop-level accidents. Based on 484 accident records of a large chemical enterprise in China, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used to analyze the rationality of accident classification and the occurrence rules of accidents at different levels. In addition, this paper used TF-IDF and K-means algorithms to extract keywords and perform text clustering analysis for accidents at different levels based on accident classification. The risk factors of each accident cluster were further analyzed, and improvement measures were proposed for the sample enterprises. RESULTS: The results show that reducing unit-level accidents can prevent group-level accidents. The accidents of the sample enterprises are mainly personal injury accidents, production accidents, environmental pollution accidents, and quality accidents. The leading causes of personal injury accidents are employees' unsafe behaviors, such as poor safety awareness, non-standard operation, illegal operation, untimely communication, etc. The leading causes of production accidents, environmental pollution accidents, and quality accidents include the unsafe state of materials, such as equipment damage, pipeline leakage, short-circuiting, excessive fluctuation of process parameters, etc. CONCLUSION: Compared with the traditional accident classification method, the accident triangle proposed in this paper based on the organizational level dramatically reduces the differences between accidents, helps enterprises quickly identify risk factors, and prevents accidents. This method can effectively prevent accidents and provide helpful guidance for the safety management of chemical enterprises.

BACKGROUND: Whether and to what extent the impact of exposure to various polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners on diabetes, as well as the important contributors, have remained unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association patterns between PCBs mixture and diabetes, identify the critical congeners, and explore the potential modifiers. METHODS: The present study included 5900 U.S. adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2016. Weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic spline regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to estimate the linear and non-linear associations of single and mixed PCB exposure with diabetes. Subgroup analyses were also conducted to explore potential sex differences. RESULTS: In the weighted logistic regression model, total PCBs were positively associated with diabetes (OR = 1.33, P < 0.025), and significant non-linear associations were observed using RCS analyses. The non-linear positive association between PCBs mixed exposure and diabetes was likewise found in the WQS and BKMR results. PCB180, PCB194, PCB196, and PCB167 were with the highest weights in the WQS, and PCB209 and PCB66 were with the highest posterior inclusion probabilities in the BKMR. Additionally, exposure to total PCBs and most of individual PCB congeners were significantly associated with elevated risk of in females (OR = 1.74; P for trend < 0.001), while fewer significant associations were observed in males. CONCLUSION: The present study highlighted the importance of the long-term surveillance of PCBs and the need to enhance protective measures against them. Notably, these associations were non-linear, congener-specific, and significantly stronger in females than males, especially at relatively high levels of PCBs exposure. Further prospective and mechanistic studies were warranted to ascertain the causal effects between PCBs mixture and diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical features and genetic variants in three children suspected for ß-ketothiolase deficiency (BKTD). METHODS: Clinical manifestations, laboratory examination and genetic testing of three children suspected for BKTD at Henan Children's Hospital between January 2018 and October 2022 were collected, and their clinical and genetic variants were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The children were all males with a age from 7 to 11 months. Their clinical manifestations have included poor spirit, shortness of breath, vomiting, convulsions after traumatic stress and/or infection. All of them had severe metabolic acidosis, elevated ketone bodies in blood and urine, hypoglycemia, with increased isoprenyl-carnitine and 3-hydroxyisovalyl-carnitine in the blood, and 2-methyl-3-hydroxybutyrate and methylprotaroyl glycine in the urine. All of them were found to harbor compound heterozygous variants of the ACAT1 gene, including c.1183G>T and a large fragment deletion (11q22.3-11q23.1) in child 1, c.121-3C>G and c.826+5_826+9delGTGTT in child 2, and c.928G>C and c.1142T>C in child 3. The variants harbored by children 2 and 3 were known to be pathogenic or likely pathogenic. The heterozygous c.1183G>T variant in child 1 was unreported previously and rated as a variant of unknown significance (PM2_Supporting+PP3+PP4) based on guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The large segment deletion in 11q22.3-11q23.1 has not been included in the DGV Database and was rated as a pathogenic copy number variation. CONCLUSION: The variants of the ACAT1 gene probably underlay the pathogenesis of BKTD in these three children.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the trend of eating out among Chinese male adults and explore the association between eating out and dietary nutrition and health. METHODS: Males aged 18 and above with complete data were selected from China Health and Nutrition Survey 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2018. Eating out behavior was defined as having consumption of food prepared outside the home during the three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls period. Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to analyze the trend of prevalence of eating out and the energy contribution from eating out foods in males from 2000 to 2018. Analysis of covariance was used to compare the differences in several food and dietary nutrient intakes and nutritional indicators by eating out in 2018. RESULTS: The prevalence of eating out among Chinese male adults increased from 48.49% in 2000 to 57.51% in 2018, showing an increased trend followed by a decreased trend. Males in the 18-29 years old group, urban group, high income group, and high education level group had a higher rate of eating out(P<0.05). The energy contribution from eating out foods increased from 21.80% in 2000 to 28.77% in 2018, showing a slow upward trend. In 2018, the intake of rice, tubers and vegetables was lower in the eating out group, while intake of wheat, fruits, livestock and poultry meat, aquatic products, eggs and milk in eating out group was higher than those in the non-eating out group(P<0.05). The eating out group had a higher intake of energy, fat, protein, cholesterol, calcium, zinc, vitamin B_1 and vitamin B_2 than the non-eating out group(P<0.05). The eating out group had lower levels of systolic blood pressure, HDL-C, blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin than the counterparts. The levels of BMI, waist, body fat percentage, diastolic blood pressure and TG were higher in the eating out group than in the non-eating out group. CONCLUSION: From 2000 to 2011, the eating out rate of males in China showed an upward trend, and a downward trend after 2011. At the same time, the energy contribution of eating out foods is increasing. Eating out was associated with major food and nutrients intake and indicators of nutritional status in male adults.
