RESUMEN

Evidence shows a continuing increase in the frequency and severity of global heatwaves1,2, raising concerns about the future impacts of climate change and the associated socioeconomic costs3,4. Here we develop a disaster footprint analytical framework by integrating climate, epidemiological and hybrid input-output and computable general equilibrium global trade models to estimate the midcentury socioeconomic impacts of heat stress. We consider health costs related to heat exposure, the value of heat-induced labour productivity loss and indirect losses due to economic disruptions cascading through supply chains. Here we show that the global annual incremental gross domestic product loss increases exponentially from 0.03 ± 0.01 (SSP 245)-0.05 ± 0.03 (SSP 585) percentage points during 2030-2040 to 0.05 ± 0.01-0.15 ± 0.04 percentage points during 2050-2060. By 2060, the expected global economic losses reach a total of 0.6-4.6% with losses attributed to health loss (37-45%), labour productivity loss (18-37%) and indirect loss (12-43%) under different shared socioeconomic pathways. Small- and medium-sized developing countries suffer disproportionately from higher health loss in South-Central Africa (2.1 to 4.0 times above global average) and labour productivity loss in West Africa and Southeast Asia (2.0-3.3 times above global average). The supply-chain disruption effects are much more widespread with strong hit to those manufacturing-heavy countries such as China and the USA, leading to soaring economic losses of 2.7 ± 0.7% and 1.8 ± 0.5%, respectively.

RESUMEN

SnTe, as a potential medium-temperature thermoelectric material, reaches a maximum power factor (PF) usually above 750 K, which is not conducive to continuous high-power output in practical applications. In this study, PF is maintained at high values between 18.5 and 25 µW cm-1 K-2 for Sn0.99In0.01Te-x wt% tourmaline samples within the temperature range of 323 to 873 K, driving the highest PFeng of 1.2 W m-1 K-1 and PFave of 22.5 µW cm-1 K-2, over 2.5 times that of pristine SnTe. Such an extraordinary PF is attributed to the synergy of resonant levels and Sn vacancy suppression. Specifically, the Seebeck coefficient increases dramatically, reaching 88 µV K-1 at room temperature. Meanwhile, by Sn vacancy suppression, carrier concentration, and mobility are optimized to ≈1019 cm-3 and 740 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. With the tourmaline compositing, Sn vacancies are further suppressed and the thermal conductivity simultaneously decreases, with the minimum lattice thermal conductivity of 0.9 W m-1 K-1. Finally, the zT value ≈0.8 is obtained in the Sn0.99In0.01Te sample. The peak of the power output density reaches 0.89 W cm-2 at a temperature difference of 600 K. Such SnTe alloys with high and "temperature-independent" PF will offer an option for realizing high output power in thermoelectric devices.

RESUMEN

Vitamin B12 plays a role in DNA methylation, influencing the 1-carbon cycle; However, its effect on colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality remains uncertain. This study assessed the relationship between vitamin B12 intake and all-cause and cancer-specific mortality among CRC patients. We analyzed data from the NHANES from 1999 to 2018, using multivariable Cox regression, competing risk model, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and stratified analysis with interaction effects. The studied involved 4,554 cancer patients (mean age 65.8 years, 47.6% males). Results from multivariate Cox regression indicated that each additional 1 mcg/day of dietary vitamin B12 independently increased the risk of all-cause (HR, 1.07; 95% CI: 1.04-1.09, p < 0.001) and cancer-specific mortality (HR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02-1.06; p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier curves indicated a higher risk of all-cause mortality with increased vitamin B12 intake (Log rank p = 0.01). Subgroup analysis suggested that higher vitamin B12 intake correlated with increased all-cause mortality risk, especially in individuals with higher protein (HR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02-1.06; p = 0.019) or carbohydrate intake (HR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.05; p = 0.04). Thus, higher vitamin B12 intake correlates with increased all-cause and cancer-specific mortality in CRC patients, particularly those with higher protein or carbohydrate intake.

RESUMEN

Objective: Associations between parental pre-pregnancy BMI in IVF/ICSI fresh embryo transfer cycles and neonatal outcomes were investigated through a retrospective analysis. Methods: A retrospective analysis of Couples who underwent IVF/ICSI fresh embryo transfer 1340 cycles from January 2019 to December 2021 was conducted in the Department of Reproductive Medicine of our hospital. Based on the preconception BMI of parents, they were divided into four groups: Group A (both father and mother with BMI < 25 kg/m²), Group B (father with BMI < 25 kg/m² and mother with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²), Group C (father with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m² and mother with BMI < 25 kg/m²), and Group D (both father and mother with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²). The differences in baseline characteristics, fertilization and embryo development, pregnancy outcomes, and neonatal outcomes were compared among the groups. Results: In the IVF cycles, Group A had a higher rate of normal fertilization compared to three other groups, Group A is significantly higher than Group D, with statistical significance (P < .05). In the ICSI cycles, there were no significant differences among the four groups regarding normal fertilization rate, day 3 high-quality embryo rate, blastocyst formation rate, and high blastocyst rate. Univariate and multivariate analysis results showed no significant differences in clinical pregnancy and live birth rates among the four groups. However, Group D had a significantly higher rate of preterm birth than other three groups, with statistical significance (P < .05). Conclusion: To achieve better clinical outcomes and neonatal outcomes, overweight or obese couples should lose weight before undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment.

RESUMEN

Janus heterostructures consisting of multiple jointed components with distinct properties have gained growing interest in the photoredox catalytic field. Herein, we have developed a facile low-temperature method to gain anisotropic one-dimensional Au-tipped CdS (Au-CdS) nanorods (NRs), followed by assembling Ru molecular co-catalyst (RuN5) onto the surface of the NRs. The CdS NRs decorated with plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) and RuN5 complex harness the virtues of metal-semiconductor and inorganic-organic interface, giving directional charge transfer channels, spatially separated reaction sites, and enhanced local electric field distribution. As a result, the Au-CdS-RuN5 can act as an efficient dual-function photocatalyst for simultaneous H2 evolution and valorization of biomass-derived alcohols. Benefiting from the interfacial charge decoupling and selective chemical bond activation, the optimal all-in-one Au-CdS-RuN5 heterostructure shows greatly enhanced photoactivity and selectivity as compared to bare CdS NRs, along with a remarkable apparent quantum yield of 40.2% at 400 nm. The structural evolution and working mechanism of the heterostructures are systematically analyzed based on experimental and computational results.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pathologic complete response (pCR) following preoperative systemic therapy is associated with improved outcomes after subsequent liver transplant/resection in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the relationship between radiographic and histopathological response remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively examined patients with initially unresectable HCC who received tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) plus anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) therapy before undergoing liver resection between March 2019 and September 2021 across 7 hospitals in China. Radiographic response was evaluated using mRECIST. A pCR was defined as no viable tumor cells in resected samples. RESULTS: We included 35 eligible patients, of whom 15 (42.9%) achieved pCR after systemic therapy. After a median follow-up of 13.2 months, tumors recurred in 8 non-pCR and 1 pCR patient. Before resection, there were 6 complete responses, 24 partial responses, 4 stable disease cases, and 1 progressive disease case, per mRECIST. Predicting pCR by radiographic response yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.727 (95% CI: 0.558-0.902), with an optimal cutoff value of 80% reduction in the enhanced area in MRI (called major radiographic response), which had a 66.7% sensitivity, 85.0% specificity, and a 77.1% diagnostic accuracy. When radiographic response was combined with α-fetoprotein response, the AUC was 0.926 (95% CI: 0.785-0.999); the optimal cutoff value was 0.446, which had a 91.7% sensitivity, 84.6%, specificity, and an 88.0% diagnostic accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with unresectable HCC receiving combined TKI/anti-PD 1 therapy, major radiographic response alone or combined with α-fetoprotein response may predict pCR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic gastritis, especially that caused by helicobacter pylori (HP) infection, has been associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke. But the relationship between chronic gastritis and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains largely undetermined. This study aimed to determine the potential predictors for CSVD, with chronic gastritis and its proxies as alternatives. METHOD: Patients aged 18 years or older with indications for electronic gastroscopy were enrolled. Presence of CSVD was evaluated with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results. Degree of CSVD was scored according to established criteria. Logistic regression analysis was used for identifying possible risk factors for CSVD. RESULTS: Of the 1191 enrolled patients, 757 (63.6%) were identified as with, and 434 (36.4%) as without CSVD. Multivariate analysis indicated that patients with chronic atrophic gastritis had an increased risk for CSVD than those without (adjusted odds ratio = 1.58; 95% CI, 1.08-2.32; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Chronic atrophic gastritis is associated with the presence of CSVD. We should routinely screen the presence of CSVD for patients with chronic atrophic gastritis.

RESUMEN

Light has a substantial effect on the behaviour and physiology of nocturnal moths. Ectropis grisescens is a major nocturnal tea pest in China, and light traps are commonly used to control geometrid moths because of their positive phototaxis. However, some moths gather around light traps and enter the light adaptation state, which decreases the efficacy of light traps in controlling this pest. We identified opsin genes and the spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors of E. grisescens moths. We also determined the effects of several monochromatic lights on opsin gene expression and light adaptation. We detected three types of opsin genes and six spectral sensitive peaks (at 370, 390, 480, 530, 550, and 580 nm). We also observed significant changes in the diurnal rhythm of opsin gene expression under different light conditions. When active males were suddenly exposed to different monochromatic lights, they quickly entered the light adaptation state, and the adaptation time was negatively correlated with the light intensity. Males were most sensitive to 390 nm wavelengths, followed by 544 nm, 457 nm, and 593 nm. Red light (627 nm) did not affect the activity of E. grisescens males but had detectable physiological effects.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of 1,25(OH)2D3 on the polarization of LPS-stimulated macrophages and the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Methods: Primary macrophages were isolated and identified using immunofluorescence assays to detect macrophage biomarker expression levels. RT-PCR was employed to measure the expression of Arginase 1 (Arg-1), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in macrophages treated with various strategies. Western blotting assessed the protein expression levels of AKT1, p-AKT1, NF-κB p65, p-NF-κB p65, STAT3, and p-STAT3 in LPS-stimulated macrophages exposed to different concentrations of 1,25(OH)2D3. Results: As the LPS concentration increased from 0 to 0.5 mg/L, Arg-1, IL-10, iNOS, and TNF-α expression levels significantly increased. However, at LPS concentrations ranging from 1 mg/L to 10 mg/L, the expression of Arg-1, IL-10, iNOS, and TNF-α displayed a trend from increase to decline. The highest M2 polarization (Arg-1 and IL-10) was observed in macrophages stimulated with 0.5 mg/L LPS among the lower concentrations, while the highest M1 polarization (iNOS and TNF-α) was observed in macrophages stimulated with 5 mg/L LPS among the higher concentrations. Subsequent experiments utilized 0.5 mg/L and 5 mg/L LPS as incubation concentrations. Under LPS stimulation, iNOS was significantly upregulated, surpassing the expression level of IL-10, a marker of M2 macrophages. The introduction of 1,25(OH)2D3 facilitated M2 polarization, with 50 nM as the incubation concentration of 1,25(OH)2D3. Furthermore, 1,25(OH)2D3 reversed the elevated expression of p-AKT1, p-NF-κB p65, and p-STAT3 in macrophages stimulated with 5 mg/L LPS. Conclusions: 1,25(OH)2D3 effectively regulates the M1/M2 polarization in LPS-stimulated macrophages.

RESUMEN

Considering the prevalence of alcohols and carboxylic acids, their fragment cross-coupling reactions could hold significant implications in organic synthesis. Herein, we report a versatile method for synthesizing a diverse range of ketones from alcohols and carboxylic acid derivatives via N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis. Mechanistic investigations revealed that photoexcited xanthates and acyl azoliums undergo single electron transfer (SET) under photocatalyst-free conditions, generating NHC-derived ketyl radicals and alkyl radicals. These open-shell intermediates subsequently undergo the radical-radical cross-coupling reaction, yielding valuable ketones. Furthermore, this approach can be employed in three-component reactions involving alkenes and enynes, resulting in structurally diverse cross-coupled ketones. The unified strategy offers a unique opportunity for the fragment coupling of a diverse range of alcohols and carboxylic acid derivatives, accommodating diverse functional groups even in complex settings.

RESUMEN

Photocatalytic epoxide alcoholysis through C-O bond cleavage and formation has emerged as an alternative to synthesizing anti-tumoral pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. However, the lack of crucial evidence to interpret the interaction between reactants and photocatalyst surface makes it challenging for photocatalytic epoxide alcoholysis with both high activity and regioselectivity. In this work, we report the hierarchical ZnIn2 S4 @CdS photocatalyst for epoxide alcoholysis with high regioselectivity nearly 100 %. Mechanistic studies unveil that the precise activation switch on exposed Zn acid sites for C-O bond polarization and cleavage has a critical significance for achieving efficient photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the establishment of Z-scheme heterojunction facilitates the interface charge separation and transfer. Remarkably, the underlying regioselective photocatalytic reaction pathway has been distinctly revealed.

RESUMEN

The present study conducted a systematic review and Meta-analysis on the efficacy and safety of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules in the treatment of chronic sinusitis. CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMbase, and Web of Science were searched for randomized controlled trials(RCTs) of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules in the treatment of chronic sinusitis. The quality of the included RCTs was assessed according to the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool and the final included trials underwent Meta-analysis with RevMan 5.4.1. Fifty-four RCTs were included, with a total sample size of 7 278 cases. The results of Meta-analysis showed that the clinical efficacy of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules alone or in combination in the experimental group in the treatment of chronic sinusitis was superior to that in the control group with conventional western medicine, Chinese medicinal preparations, or surgery only(RR=1.19, 95%CI[1.15, 1.24], P<0.000 01). The combined use of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules on the basis of the control group was superior to the control group in improving the main symptoms and signs of chronic sinusitis [RR_(nasal congestion)=1.33, 95%CI[1.21, 1.45], P<0.000 01, RR_(runny nose)=1.28, 95%CI[1.18, 1.40], P<0.000 01, RR_(turbinate congestion or swelling)=1.28, 95%CI[1.16, 1.41], P<0.000 01]. Biyuan Tongqiao Granules alone or in combination could effectively reduce the Snot-20 score, which was superior to the control group(MD=-2.94, 95%CI[-3.60,-2.28], P<0.000 01). Biyuan Tongqiao Granules alone and in combination could effectively reduce the VAS score, which was superior to the control group(MD_(total score)=-4.44, 95%CI[-6.05,-2.82], P<0.000 01; MD_(nasal congestion VAS score)=-0.99, 95%CI[-1.38,-0.60], P<0.000 01; MD_(runny nose VAS score)=-1.19, 95%CI[-1.62,-0.76], P<0.000 01; MD_(dysosmia VAS score)=-0.96, 95%CI[-1.26,-0.65], P<0.000 01; MD_(head and face pain VAS score)=-0.73, 95%CI[-0.98,-0.47], P<0.000 01). The combined use of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules could effectively reduce the sinus CT score and the Lund-Mackey score of the endoscopic mucosal morphology(MD_(sinus CT score)=-3.68, 95%CI[-5.47,-1.88], P<0.000 1, MD_(endoscopic mucosal morphology score)=-3.06, 95%CI[-5.53,-0.59], P=0.02). Compared with the control group with conventional western medicine, Chinese medicinal preparations, or surgery only, combined use of Biyuan Tongqiao Granules did not increase the occurrence of adverse reactions(RR=0.68, 95%CI[0.26, 1.77], P=0.43). As demonstrated by the existing evidence, Biyuan Tongqiao Granules can improve the clinical efficacy of chronic sinusitis, relieve the clinical symptoms and signs, and reduce the Snot-20 score, VAS score, and Lund-Mackey score, without inducing serious adverse reactions, indicating that Biyuan Tongqiao Granules alone or in combination are more effective and safe in the treatment of chronic sinusitis than conventional western medicine, Chinese medicinal preparations, or surgical treatment. Since the quality of the included trials was generally low, large-scale, high-quality, rigorous, multi-center, and blinded-designed RCTs that meet international standards should be adopted in the future to increase the strength and level of evidence.

RESUMEN

A unified strategy for the deoxygenative or desulfurative pyridylation of various alcohols and thiols has been developed through a single-electron transfer (SET) process of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) derived from pyridinium salts and PtBu3 . Mechanistic studies revealed that N-amidopyridinium salts serve as effective Lewis acids for the formation of FLPs with PtBu3 , and the generated phosphine radical cation ionically couples with the in situ generated xanthate, eventually affording the alkyl radical through facile ß-scission under photocatalyst-free conditions. The reaction efficiency was further accelerated by visible-light irradiation. This method is conceptually appealing by using encounter complexes in FLP chemistry to promote SET, which provides a previously unrecognized opportunity for the selective heteroarylation of a diverse range of alcohols and thiols with various functional groups, even in complex settings under mild reaction conditions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are widely distributed in cells and participate in the regulation of the pathophysiological process of many diseases. As an important part of non-coding RNA, miRNAs regulate a variety of molecules and signal pathways in tumour cells. However, the evidence for regulatory mechanisms of specific miRNAs in tumour cells is still lacking. METHODS: In this study, we used transcriptomics analysis and integrated a variety of public databases to screen miRNAs that have key regulatory effects on breast cancer (BC). In addition, we used in vitro and in vivo studies and combined clinical samples to verify its regulatory mechanism. RESULTS: We found that among the specific miRNAs, miR-215-5p is a key regulator in BC. Compared with normal adjacent tissues, miR-215-5p has a lower expression level in BC tissues. Patients with high expression levels of miR-215-5p have a longer survival time. miR-215-5p can specifically target the 3'UTR region of RAD54B mRNA and down-regulate the expression of RAD54B, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of BC cells and promoting the apoptosis of BC cells. CONCLUSIONS: Finally, we found that miR-215-5p can be used as an important biomarker for BC. We have clarified its function and revealed its mechanism of targeting RAD54B mRNA for the first time. This may provide important clues to reveal the deeper molecular regulation mechanism of BC.

RESUMEN

The tumor microenvironment is considered one of the main players in tumor development and progression. The tumor microenvironment composed of a large number of extracellular matrix proteins is very complex. The continuous accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins has been shown to play a key role in tumor bioregulation, including proliferation, invasion, matrix remodeling. If these processes can be detected early, and effective interventions can be given in time, the progression of the tumor may be delayed. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore new biomarkers and therapeutic targets. In recent years, studies have shown that periostin (POSTN) may regulate multiple biological behaviors of tumor cells. Here we review the updated progress on the role of POSTN in pathologic pathways of tumor development and progression to explore whether POSTN is a potential therapeutic target.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Parent-child separation is a considerable adversity for left-behind children (LBC), but there is little evidence on the association between detailed characteristics of parent-child separation and social-emotional development among LBC. This study examined the characteristics of parent-child separation and its impacts on developmental delay among under-3 LBC in poor rural China. METHODS: We used data from 811 LBC surveyed in five poor counties in rural China in 2018. Detailed characteristics of their parental migration were recalled by their primary caregivers in face-to-face interviews. The children's social-emotional development was measured by using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional. Logistic regression was employed to examine the association of detailed characteristics of parent-child separation with early social-emotional problems after adjusting for the children's and primary caregivers' sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS: 287 (35.4%) children were left behind by fathers and cared for by mothers (FM-MC), while 524 (64.6%) were left behind by both parents and cared for by grandparents (PM-GC). The rate of social-emotional problems among LBC was 36.8% (PM-GC vs FM-MC: 40.6% vs 29.5%; aOR 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.16). For paternal migration, the medians of the child's age at the first migration and average duration per migration were 3 months (IQR: 1 to 9 months) and 4.48 months (IQR: 2.38 to 7.54 months), respectively. For maternal migration, the corresponding values were 9 months (IQR: 6 to 13 months) and 4.65 months (IQR: 2.71 to 7.62 months), respectively. On average, LBC had been separated from fathers for 72% of their life due to paternal migration and from mothers for 52% of their life due to maternal migration. No significant association was found between the detailed characteristics of paternal migration and social-emotional development among LBC, while social-emotional problems among LBC were significantly associated with the proportion of cumulative duration of maternal migration in the child's lifetime (aOR 2.83; 95% CI: 1.13 to 7.10). CONCLUSIONS: LBC under 3 years had a high risk of social-emotional problems in poor rural China. Cumulative exposure to maternal migration may be detrimental to LBC's early social-emotional development. Programs are necessary to support these children as well as their families.

RESUMEN

A tandem catalytic strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of spirocyclopentanone pyrazolones bearing three contiguous stereocenters and two quaternary carbons with good stereoselectivities has been developed. This strategy, using pyrazolones as efficient C1 synthons and involving a polarity reversal process, not only overcame the energy barrier of the dearomatization process but also avoided nucleophilic addition of the hydroxy group in the enol form tautomer. Futhermore, spirocyclopentanones could be transformed into spirocyclohexamide pyrazolone with the Lawesson reagent.

RESUMEN

Alopecines A-E (1-5), five unusual matrine-type alkaloids featuring with an additional dichlorocyclopropane (1-3) or a di/tri-chloromethyl (4/5) attached on the D ring, were isolated from the seeds of Sophora alopecuroides. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques, and X-ray diffraction analyses or time-dependent density functional theory-based electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD) calculations. Alkaloid 4 exhibited potent inhibitory effects on the proliferation of ConA-induced T lymphocytes or LPS-induced B cells with IC50 value of 3.98 or 3.74 µM, respectively.

RESUMEN

Recently, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been demonstrated to be involved in many biological processes of plants; however, a systematic study on transcriptional and, in particular, post-transcriptional regulation of stress-responsive lncRNAs in Oryza sativa (rice) is lacking. We sequenced three types of RNA libraries (poly(A)+, poly(A)- and nuclear RNAs) under four abiotic stresses (cold, heat, drought and salt). Based on an integrative bioinformatics approach and ~200 high-throughput data sets, ~170 of which have been published, we revealed over 7000 lncRNAs, nearly half of which were identified for the first time. Notably, we found that the majority of the ~500 poly(A) lncRNAs that were differentially expressed under stress were significantly downregulated, but approximately 25% were found to have upregulated non-poly(A) forms. Moreover, hundreds of lncRNAs with downregulated polyadenylation (DPA) tend to be highly conserved, show significant nuclear retention and are co-expressed with protein-coding genes that function under stress. Remarkably, these DPA lncRNAs are significantly enriched in quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for stress tolerance or development, suggesting their potential important roles in rice growth under various stresses. In particular, we observed substantially accumulated DPA lncRNAs in plants exposed to drought and salt, which is consistent with the severe reduction of RNA 3'-end processing factors under these conditions. Taken together, the results of this study reveal that polyadenylation and subcellular localization of many rice lncRNAs are likely to be regulated at the post-transcriptional level. Our findings strongly suggest that many upregulated/downregulated lncRNAs previously identified by traditional RNA-seq analyses need to be carefully reviewed to assess the influence of post-transcriptional modification.
