RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Journals in languages other than English that publish original clinical research are often not well covered in the main biomedical databases and therefore often not included in systematic reviews. This study aimed to identify Spanish language biomedical journals from Spain and Latin America and to describe their main features. METHODS: Journals were identified in electronic databases, publishers' catalogues and local registries. Eligibility was determined by assessing data from these sources or the journals' websites, when available. FINDINGS: A total of 2457 journals were initially identified; 1498 met inclusion criteria. Spain (27.3%), Mexico (16.0%), Argentina (15.1%) and Chile (11.9%) had the highest number of journals. Most (85.8%) are currently active; 87.8% have an ISSN. The median and mean length of publication were 22 and 29 years, respectively. A total of 66.0% were indexed in at least one database; 3.0% had an impact factor in 2012. A total of 845 journals had websites (56.4%), of which 700 (82.8%) were searchable and 681 (80.6%) free of charge. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the identified journals have no impact factor or are not indexed in any of the major databases. The list of identified biomedical journals can be a useful resource when conducting hand searching activities and identifying clinical trials that otherwise would not be retrieved.

The training of professionals, with high quality, is an essential task of Higher Education, which is why there is a permanent demand for graduates committed to development processes, where the knowledge, skills and values in which they have been trained are evidenced. The objective of the diagnosis was to characterize the situation of professional guidance and reaffirmation (consolidation of professional motives and intentions) in the process of studying the Bachelor's degree in Physical Culture, in Granma; from three dimensions: pedagogical, psychological and sociological. Theoretical and empirical methods were applied that showed insufficiencies in the planned actions in the educational strategies and in the methodological work plan of the different disciplines, a limited use of the potential of the content and extension activities and low levels of satisfaction with the study of the career; which was manifested in the non-selection of a sphere of action for future professional performance, and in the high levels of student dropout, in the first two years of training.

RESUMEN

Despite the importance of randomized trials for well-informed decisions in health care, a large proportion of the results of these trials are not published, especially when they are negative. Publication bias has a negative impact in the treatment of patients, due to the distorted impression it leads to for new therapies. Clinical Trial Registries help to overcome this by providing transparency in the process of conducting research. The World Health Organization takes the position that the registration of interventional trials is a scientific, ethical and moral responsibility. Taking account of this global movement, the National Coordinating Centre of Clinical Trials and the Cuban Health Network, designed and implemented the Cuban Public Registry of Clinical Trials. The Registry was established in June 2007 and is intended for public service in Cuban territory, although it is open to registrants and patients outside Cuba. The Registry staff developed a strategy to become a Primary Registry of the World Health Organization, and this was achieved in February 2011.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the implementation of strong recommendations contained in the WHO and PAHO guidelines on maternal health in the Dominican Republic. Methods: A search was conducted for maternal health recommendations on the WHO's BIGG-REC platform. A total of 249 recommendations were identified: 215 strong recommendations in favor and 34 strong recommendations against, contained in 76 WHO guidelines formulated using the GRADE methodology from 2010 to 2022. These recommendations were classified into 6 domains: abortion, nutrition, hemorrhage, hypertension, infection, contraception, and public health. The characteristics and determinants that facilitate or hinder the implementation of these recommendations by the Dominican health system were analyzed. Results: 29 strong recommendations in favor were included, corresponding to the 6 domains. The recommendations with the highest level of implementation were those related to the management of obstetric hemorrhage and infection prevention. Recommendations related to abortion and public health programs had the lowest level of implementation. The main determinants for non-implementation are limitations in the legal or regulatory framework, disorganization of the service network, and social and cultural barriers. Discussion: Limitations persist in the Dominican Republic regarding the implementation of strong recommendations in maternal health from WHO guidelines. The results highlight the need to strengthen strategies for implementing recommendations in the areas of abortion care and public health interventions.
