RESUMEN

The degradation of pesticide diuron has been explored by photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) under visible light illumination using two different WO3 nanostructures, obtained by anodization of tungsten. The highest degradation efficiency (73%) was obtained for WO3 nanosheets synthesized in the presence of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide (0.05 M). For that nanostructure, the kinetic coefficient for diuron degradation was 133% higher than that for the other nanostructure (anodized in the presence of fluoride anions). These results have been explained by taking into account the different architecture and dimensions of the two WO3 nanostructures under study.

RESUMEN

In September 2012, a novel disease syndrome was observed in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) crops in Murcia Province (southeastern Spain). Symptoms included curling, vein swelling, and severe mosaic in young leaves, short internodes, and fruit skin roughness, resembling begomovirus infection. Similar symptoms were observed in May 2013 in Almería Province (southern Spain). DNA was isolated from 8 and 7 symptomatic leaf samples collected in Murcia and Almería, respectively, and analyzed by PCR with primers GemCP-V-5' and GemCP-C-3' designed to detect begomoviruses by amplifying the core of coat protein gene (CP) (3). DNA fragments of the expected size (~600 bp) were amplified supporting a begomovirus infection. The DNA sequences obtained from four samples were identical. BLAST analysis showed the highest nucleotide identity (98%) with partial CP gene sequences from isolates of Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) infecting cucumber in India (GenBank Accession No. KC846817). ToLCNDV, a bipartite begomovirus first reported from tomato, also infects other solanaceous and cucurbitaceous crops in India and neighboring countries (1). DNA from two samples from Murcia and three from Almería was used for rolling-circle amplification using ϕ29 DNA polymerase (TempliPhi kit, GE Healthcare, Little Chalfont, UK) and digested with a set of restriction endonucleases. All five samples yielded amplification products with identical restriction patterns. Two samples from Murcia (MU-8.1 and MU-11.1) and one from Almería (AL-661) were selected to clone the putative DNA-A and DNA-B begomovirus genome components by using single BamHI or NcoI sites. Inserts of two clones from each sample, one corresponding to DNA-A and one to DNA-B, were completely sequenced. The cloned genomes exhibited the typical organization of Old World bipartite begomoviruses (1). Sequences were aligned with begomovirus sequences available in databases using MUSCLE and pairwise identity scores were calculated with SDT (species demarcation tool [4]). DNA-A sequences obtained from Murcia (2,738 nt, KF749224 and KF749225) and Almería (2,738 nt, KF749223) shared >99% nucleotide identity, with the highest nucleotide identity (91.3 to 91.5%) with that of an Indian ToLCNDV isolate from chilli (HM007120). DNA-B sequences (2,684 nt, KF749226, KF749227, and KF749228) shared >99% nucleotide identity, and showed the highest nucleotide identity (83.1 to 83.3%) with that of a Pakistani ToLCNDV isolate from Solanum nigrum (AJ620188). Nucleotide sequence identity of DNA-A with the most closely related begomoviruses was above the 91% threshold for species demarcation (2), thus confirming that the begomoviruses found infecting zucchini in Spain are isolates of ToLCNDV. In fall 2013, the disease was widespread in zucchini both in Murcia and Almería, and ToLCNDV has also been found infecting melon and cucumber crops. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a bipartite begomovirus in Spain and Europe. References: (1) J. K. Brown et al. Page 351 in: Virus Taxonomy. Ninth Report of the ICTV. A. M. Q. RESUMEN

A stabilization/solidification (S/S) process by using cement was applied to tannery sludge in order to find a safer way of landfilling this waste. The effects of three parameters on the process effectiveness were analysed in terms of leachate toxicity and chromium retention (%). The parameters studied were the relative amount of added water (30-50 wt.%), cement (10-60 wt.% in the solid components), and the use of three different types of cement (clinker with additions of limestone, with additions of limestone and fly ashes, and with additions of pozzolans). Statistical analysis performed by variance analysis and categorical multifactorial tests reveals that all the studied parameters significantly influence the effectiveness of the process. Results showed that chromium retention decreases as the relative amount of cement and water increases, probably due to additional chromium provided by cement and increased in the porosity of the mixtures. Leachate toxicity showed the same minimum value for mixtures with 30% or 40% cement, depending on the type of cement, showing that clinker is the main material responsible for the process effectiveness, and additives (pozzolans or fly ashes) do not improve it. The volume increase is lower as less sludge is replaced by cement and the relative amount of water decreases, and for the cement without additions of fly ashes or pozzolans. Therefore, the latter seems to be the most appropriate cement in spite of being more expensive. This is due to the fact that the minimum toxicity value is achieved with a lower amount of cement; and moreover, the volume increase in the mixtures is lower, minimizing the disposal cost to a landfill.

RESUMEN

In this work, CuOx (x = 1 and 2) nanostructures have been synthesized by electrochemical anodization in ethylene glycol based electrolytes using oxalic acid or NaF (with or without NaOH) as complexing agents. The influence of hydrodynamic conditions and time during anodization of copper have also been evaluated. A comprehensive morphological, structural, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical characterization of the nanostructures has been performed. The results revealed the convenient use of oxalic acid and 250 rpm for 5 minutes during electrochemical anodization to obtain homogeneous CuOx nanostructures formed by spheres with Cu2O as a predominant phase. Using this nanostructure as a photocathode for N2O photoelectron-reduction, almost 100% of N2O removal was achieved after 1 h, showing the improvement of the photoelectrochemical approach vs. the photo or the electro performance.

RESUMEN

In this study, WO3 nanostructures were synthesized by the electrochemical anodization technique to use them on the degradation of persistent organic compounds such as the pesticide fenamiphos. The acids electrolyte used during the anodization were two different: 1.5 M H2SO4 - 0.05 M H2O2 and 1.5 M CH4O3S - 0.05 M H2O2. Once the samples have been manufactured, they have been subjected to different tests to analyze the properties of the nanostructures. With Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) the samples have been examined morphologically, their composition and crystallinity has been studied through Raman Spectroscopy and their photoelectrochemical behaviour by Photoelectrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (PEIS). Finally, degradation tests have been carried out using the technique known as photoelectrocatalysis (PEC). The conditions that were applied in this technique were a potential of 1 VAg/AgCl and simulated solar illumination. The degradation process was monitored by UV-Visible and High-Performance liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to control the course of the experiment. The nanostructures obtained with 1.5 M CH4O3S - 0.05 M H2O2 electrolyte showed a better photoelectrochemical behaviour than nanostructures synthesized with 1.5 M H2SO4 - 0.05 M H2O2. The fenamiphos degradation was achieved at 2 h of experiment and the intermediate formation was noticed at 1 h of PEC experiment.

RESUMEN

A photoelectrocatalyst consisting of WO3 nanosheets or nanorods has been synthesized by electrochemical anodization under hydrodynamic conditions, and has been used for the degradation of two toxic pesticides: chlorfenvinphos and bromacil. Nanostructures have been characterized by FESEM and Raman spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical degradation tests have been carried out both for individual pesticide solutions and for a mixture solution, and the concentration evolution with time has been followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. For individual pesticides, pseudo-first order kinetic coefficients of 0.402h-1 and 0.324h-1 have been obtained for chlorfenvinphos and bromacil, respectively, while for the mixture solution, these kinetic coefficients have been 0.162h-1 and 0.408h-1. The change in behavior towards pesticide degradation depending on whether individual or mixture solutions were used might be indicative of a competitive process between the two pesticide molecules when interacting with the WO3 nanostructures surface or when approaching the semiconductor/electrolyte interface.

RESUMEN

Amplitude and phase velocity measurements on the laminar oscillatory viscous boundary layer produced by acoustic waves are presented. The measurements were carried out in acoustic standing waves in air with frequencies of 68.5 and 114.5 Hz using laser Doppler anemometry and particle image velocimetry. The results obtained by these two techniques are in good agreement with the predictions made by the Rayleigh viscous boundary layer theory and confirm the existence of a local maximum of the velocity amplitude and its expected location.

RESUMEN

Unprecedented regioselective post-functionalization of racemic and enantiopure cationic diaza [4]helicenes is afforded. The peripheral auxochrome substituents allow a general tuning of the electrochemical, photophysical and chiroptical properties of the helical dyes (26 examples). For instance, electronic absorption and circular dichroism are modulated from the orange to near-infrared spectral range (575-750 nm), fluorescence quantum efficiency is enhanced up to 0.55 (631 nm) and circularly polarized luminescence is recorded in the red (|glum| ∼ 10-3).

RESUMEN

Human endometrial curettings were selected principally from patients undergoing tubal ligations for elective sterilization. Specimens were analyzed for the metabolism of 17beta-[6,7-3H]estradiol and Na2 35SO4; assayed for the nuclear receptor content with 17beta-[6,7-3H]estradiol; and examined for the cytosol receptor content with 17beta-[2,4,6,7-3H]estradiol. The results of these experiments demonstrated that a) estrogen sulfotransferase activity is greatly stimulated during the secretory phase; b) although estrogen dehydrogenase is active throughout the menstrual cycle, the formation of estrone is elevated in concert with sulfurylation; and c) this increased metabolism of 17beta-estradiol is accompanied by a decreased nuclear uptake of the estrogen receptor complex. The importance of this endometrial estrogen metabolism in the maintenance of a secretory tissue is discussed.

RESUMEN

The interaction of Entamoeba histolytica with collagen induces the intracellular formation and release of electron-dense granules (EDGs) containing collagenase activity which are important in the pathogenicity of this parasite. Purified EDGs contain at least 25 polypeptides with acidic pIs, nine gelatinase activities, small molecules, including inorganic phosphate (Pi), pyrophosphate (PP) and other elements, including Na, Mg, S, Cl, K, Ca and Fe as measured by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Six of these polypeptides with apparent molecular weights of 108, 106, 104, 97, 68 and 59 kDa and two protease activities with apparent molecular weights of 40 and 85 kDa were detected exclusively in the EDGs and were not observed in total trophozoite extracts. Actin was also detected in the EDGs. Therefore, EDGs are a complex of mainly cationic proteins, which contains numerous proteolytic activities, actin and small molecules such as P(i), PP and cations.

RESUMEN

Previous reports have revealed that calmodulin antagonism by melatonin is followed by microtubule enlargements and neurite outgrowths in neuroblastoma N1E-115 cells. In addition, activation of protein kinase C (PKC) by this neurohormone is also followed by increased vimentin phosphorylation, and reorganization of vimentin intermediate filaments (IFs) in N1E-115 cells. In this work, we further characterize the activation of PKC by melatonin in neuroblastoma N1E-115 cells. We studied the Ca(2+)-dependent effects of melatonin on PKC activity and distribution of PKC-alpha in isolated N1E-115 cell IFs. Also, the effects of melatonin on PKC-alpha translocation in comparison to PKC-epsilon, were studied in intact N1E-115 cells. The results showed that both melatonin and the PKC agonist phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate increased PKC activity in isolated IFs. The effects of the hormone were Ca(2+)-dependent, while those caused by the phorbol ester were produced with or without Ca(2+). Also, in isolated in situ IFs, the hormone changed the distribution of PKC-alpha. In intact N1E-115 cells, melatonin elicited PKC-alpha translocation and no changes were detected in PKC-epsilon. Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate modified the subcellular distribution of both PKC isoforms. The results showed that melatonin selectively activates the Ca(2+)-dependent alpha isoform of PKC and suggest that PKC-alpha activation by melatonin underlies IF rearrangements and participates in neurite formation in N1E-115 cells.

RESUMEN

Dengue viruses are arthropod-borne, single-stranded RNA viruses. Aëdes aegypti and Aëdes albopictus are the principal vectors. In order to understand the molecular basis of dengue virus infections we explored the biochemical identity of dengue-2 (DEN-2) virus receptors in the Aëdes albopictus-derived cell line C6/36. We show here that DEN-2 interacts with two major polypeptides of 80 and 67 kDa. Polyclonal anti-C6/36 membrane antibodies block DEN-2 binding to intact C6/36 monolayers as well as to membrane extracts. Our results strongly suggest that the identified polypeptides are part of the DEN-2 receptors.

RESUMEN

In vitro interaction of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites with collagen induces the intracellular formation and release of electron-dense granules (EDGs). We determined that four polypeptides in EDGs total antigen by SDS-PAGE were absent in trophozoite extracts. A monoclonal antibody raised against these EDGs recognized a polypeptide of 40 kDa specific for the pathogenic strains of E. histolytica. In addition, this mAb recognized a 96 kDa peptide masked by carbohydrates.

RESUMEN

Primary psoas abscess is a relatively rare and imposes diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We describe a 16-year-old boy who presented with fever, limp and the clinical picture of septic arthritis of the hip joint. He did not respond to conventional medical treatment. When the diagnosis of psoas abscess was made and the abscess was drained, he gradually recovered. The diagnosis of psoas abscess is frequently missed. Correct diagnosis is very important because usually, cure only follows surgical drainage.

The purpose of this study is to identify myths and \r\ncultural beliefs about the care of children under the age \r\nof 1 that can lead to risky behavior, in the municipality of \r\nChocontá between June and August of 2012.\r\nMethodology: an exploratory ethnographic, descriptive \r\nand documental study with qualitative approach was \r\nconducted, and unstructured interviews were performed \r\nwith mothers of children under one year, in the outpatient \r\nor pediatric emergency room, at San Martín de Porres \r\nhospital of Chocontá. Their experiences and knowledge \r\nabout the care or their babies were recorded; data \r\nobtained during the outpatient assessment, and the reco\r\n-\r\nllection and review of the literature were included. The \r\ninformation was analyzed from domains of knowledge \r\nsuch as: general care, neurodevelopment, respiratory, \r\ngastrointestinal, nourishment and others; to create an \r\napproach to restructure, trade or preserve the popular \r\nactivity in a matter.\r\nResults: restructuring was considered in ten of the \r\nnineteen myths analyzed because they represent risky \r\nbehaviors for the child, eight must be negotiated with \r\nmothers and caregivers and one does not affect the inte\r\n-\r\ngrity of the child and could be retained.\r\nConclusions: it is important for health care providers to \r\nunderstand and not to dismiss the beliefs and cultural \r\npractices that are essential part of any community in \r\norder to engage in an effective communication and allow \r\nthe mothers and caregivers to continue with their cultural \r\nlegacy and avoid confrontation. Furthermore, most prac\r\n-\r\ntices are performed in the neonatal period, a critical and \r\nsusceptible stage in which the care plays an important \r\nrole in the newborn's health. It is imperative to explain \r\nto family members the reasons that a particular activity \r\nthreatens the health of children.
