RESUMEN

Catalysts with V2O5, WO3 and V2O5-WO3 dispersed over TiO2 were synthesized using sol-gel technique and thoroughly characterized by various techniques. The catalysts were evaluated for degradation of ortho-dichloro benzene (o-DCB) in air/helium, a representative probe molecule for polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran by employing in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR spectroscopy). Different intermediate species formed on the surface of the TiO2 supported catalysts through of interaction of sorbate molecules with the lattice and/or gaseous oxygen were investigated in detail. Analysis of vibrational bands, observed during sorption of o-DCB and o-DCB-air mixture as a function of temperature over these catalysts, delineated the role of surface intermediate species such as phenolate, enolates, maleates, carboxylates, carbonates in mineralization of o-DCB. Nature and stability of intermediate species, found to be different over these catalysts, were able to elucidate the catalytic activity trend.

Background The meniscus plays an important role in maintaining healthy articular cartilage. Meniscus tear, one of the common intra-articular knee lesions, is treated by either debridement or repair. Objective This study aims at identifying the early outcome of meniscus tears treated by debridement or repair. This study also elaborates on the spectrum of meniscal injuries presented in a tertiary care hospital in Nepal. Method A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Orthopedic Department of Dhulikhel Hospital from February 2018 until January 2020 among patients who underwent knee arthroscopies for meniscal tears treated either by debridement or repair. Patients having intra articular fractures, osteochondral injuries and multi-ligament injuries were excluded. The meniscal tears were classified according to location and type of tear. Those patients who had at least one-year of follow up were evaluated with Lysholm score for functional outcome. Data were compiled and analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2011. Result One hundred and ten cases of meniscal tears were managed over the study period. Ninty-three cases could be traced for outcome evaluation, which included 50 cases of meniscal debridement and 43 cases of meniscal repair. The mean Lysholm score of the patients who received debridement was 81.5 (SD 10.4) and those who received meniscal repair was 84.9 (SD 9.1) (p=0.105). The population distribution was found to be similar in both the groups according to age and sex distribution and associated ligamentous injuries. Conclusion Good functional outcome was seen for meniscal tears managed with debridement or repair in at least one year follow up and could not establish one modality of management better than the other.

AIM: Emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing with quinolone-resistant (QR) pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae augmented the need to establish therapeutic options against them. Present study aimed towards determination of synergistic combination of eugenol (EG) with cefotaxime (CTX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) to combat against this resistance and potentiation of antibacterial drugs by EG against these bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: Synergistic interaction between EG and CTX/CIP (FICI: 0·08-0·5) were observed among ESBL-QR bacteria using checkerboard assay. Approximately, 2- to 1024-fold minimum inhibitory concentration value reduction and 17- to 165 030-fold dose reduction index strongly suggested synergistic interaction between EG and antibiotics. Cell viability assay showed reduction in log10 CFU per ml from 16·6 to 3·1 at synergistic concentration. Scanning electron microscopy further proved disruptive effect of EG on cell architecture. Eugenol and/or its combination also altered genes' expressions that imparted antibiotic resistance by ~1·6 to ~1226 folds. CONCLUSIONS: Reduced doses of antibiotics, bacterial morphological alterations, efflux pump down regulation, porin over expression and beta-lactamase gene inhibition of ESBL-QR bacteria by EG alone or in combination with CTX/CIP might have reversed antibiotic resistance profile of ESBL-QR bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study provided a molecular insight into action of EG and/with CTX and CIP, which might have potentiated antibiotic's activity against ESBL-QR bacteria.

AIMS: Global spread of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPsA) and Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is an emerging clinical problem. Since, quercetin is a well-known antibacterial agent; it would be relevant to demonstrate synergy between quercetin and meropenem and elucidate molecular basis of effective bactericidal activity of quercetin-meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hence, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), checkerboard, time-kill and Baclight assays were performed to determine the antibacterial and synergistic activity of quercetin with meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB. To corroborate synergism, fractional inhibitory concentration index, combination index calculation and isobologram analysis were performed on selected isolates. Finally, to elucidate molecular basis of effective bactericidal activity of quercetin-meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB, effect of meropenem, quercetin and their combinations on cellular morphology and levels of blaNDM , mexB and adeB expressions were evaluated on selected isolates by scanning electron microscope and qRT-PCR. Quercetin exhibited synergy with meropenem. It inhibited blaNDM and AdeB expression. Half-MIC combination of quercetin-meropenem exerted bactericidal activity by disrupting cell wall/membrane integrity and altering cellular morphology. CONCLUSION: Quercetin could potentiate meropenem activity against CRPsA and CRAB. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study had demonstrated bactericidal and synergistic activity of quercetin with meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB.

PURPOSE: To evaluate depth of field, lateral resolution, and image quality of a heads-up 3D visualization system for vitreoretinal surgery using physician survey and optical measurement outcomes. METHODS: Depth of field and lateral resolution were compared between the standard ocular viewing system and the digital 3D system at ×5, ×13, and ×18 magnification by 6 retinal surgeons. Optical techniques were used as well as a survey of surgeon impression. Surgeon impression surveys were performed after 6 weeks of surgical use of the device. RESULTS: Physician questionnaire survey scores for depth of field at high magnification were better for the digital 3D system and equivalent for all other categories. Measured lateral resolution was 36.7 mm and 16.6 mm at ×5 magnification (P < 0.001), 14.3 mm and 6.4 mm at ×13 magnification (P < 0.001), and 9.8 mm and 4.2 mm (P < 0.001) at ×18 magnification for the digital 3D and oculars, respectively. Measured depth of field was 4.00 mm and 6.78 mm at ×5 magnification (P = 0.027), 0.72 mm and 0.86 mm at ×13 (P = 0.311), and 0.28 mm and 0.40 mm at ×18 magnification (P = 0.235) for the oculars and digital 3D, respectively. CONCLUSION: Lateral resolution of the digital 3D system was half that of the ocular viewing system and there was some improvement in depth of field with the digital system. Surgeon impression suggested that the digital system was superior when evaluating depth of field at high magnification.

This work investigated the relationship of host size, seasons, and water quality parameters with the prevalence and intensity of Cornudiscoides agarwali on Mystus bleekeri collected from the Dikrong River in Arunachal Pradesh, India from February 2016 to January 2017. A total of 2760 specimens of C. agarwali were recovered from 114 individuals of M. bleekeri. The levels of mean intensity, but not the prevalence, of infection of C. agarwali were positively correlated with fish host size, peaking in the largest size class (45.20 ± 5.69 parasites/fi sh). The prevalence values had a statistically significant seasonal trend, reaching highest (100 %) during the pre-monsoon season, followed by 91.8% during the post-monsoon period and 87.5 % during the monsoon season. The levels of mean intensity of infection were also dependent on the seasons, reaching significantly higher levels during the pre-monsoon season (42.75 ± 4.18 parasites/fi sh). All water quality parameters measured were within the safety value recommended for freshwater aquaculture. Cornudiscoides agarwali maintained its prevalence above 87.5 % throughout the annual cycle, which means it was able to reproduce year-round in a non-polluted river. This could be an indication of monogenoidean community and population dynamics thriving best under optimum water quality parameters. Also, this article draws the attention of parasitologists and ichthyologists to a taxonomic problem of the misidentification of Mystus spp., and therefore, possibly of their parasitic monogenoids.

Actinomycetes, a Gram positive bacteria, well reported as a source of antibiotics, also possess potential to control various plant pathogens, besides acting as plant growth promoting agent. Chemicals in different forms are extensively being used in vegetable farming, adversely affecting the environment and consumer health. Microbial agent like actinomycetes can substantially replace these harmful chemicals, and have now started finding a place as an important input in to farming practices. Only selected vegetable crops belonging to 11 different families have been explored with use of actinomycetes as biocontrol and plant growth promoting agent till now. It provides ample opportunities to vegetable researchers, to further explore with use of this very important group of microorganisms, in order to achieve even higher production level of safe vegetables. Mycostop and Actinovate are two actinomycetes based formulations globally available for use in vegetable farming as a substitute for chemical formulations. Present review article has summarized the literature available on use of actinomycetes in vegetable farming. Existing wide gap in knowledge, and potential thrust areas for future research have also been projected.

We sought proof of concept of a Big Data Solution incorporating longitudinal structured and unstructured patient-level data from electronic health records (EHR) to predict graft loss (GL) and mortality. For a quality improvement initiative, GL and mortality prediction models were constructed using baseline and follow-up data (0-90 days posttransplant; structured and unstructured for 1-year models; data up to 1 year for 3-year models) on adult solitary kidney transplant recipients transplanted during 2007-2015 as follows: Model 1: United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) data; Model 2: UNOS & Transplant Database (Tx Database) data; Model 3: UNOS, Tx Database & EHR comorbidity data; and Model 4: UNOS, Tx Database, EHR data, Posttransplant trajectory data, and unstructured data. A 10% 3-year GL rate was observed among 891 patients (2007-2015). Layering of data sources improved model performance; Model 1: area under the curve (AUC), 0.66; (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60, 0.72); Model 2: AUC, 0.68; (95% CI: 0.61-0.74); Model 3: AUC, 0.72; (95% CI: 0.66-077); Model 4: AUC, 0.84, (95 % CI: 0.79-0.89). One-year GL (AUC, 0.87; Model 4) and 3-year mortality (AUC, 0.84; Model 4) models performed similarly. A Big Data approach significantly adds efficacy to GL and mortality prediction models and is EHR deployable to optimize outcomes.

Au-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles have been synthesized through a one-pot synthesis route from their respective chloride precursors using block copolymer as a stabilizer. Growth of the nanoparticles has been studied by simultaneous in situ measurement of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy at the energy-dispersive EXAFS beamline (BL-08) at Indus-2 SRS at RRCAT, Indore, India. In situ XAS spectra, comprising both X-ray near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) parts, have been measured simultaneously at the Au and Pt L3-edges. While the XANES spectra of the precursors provide real-time information on the reduction process, the EXAFS spectra reveal the structure of the clusters formed in the intermediate stages of growth. This insight into the formation process throws light on how the difference in the reduction potential of the two precursors could be used to obtain the core-shell-type configuration of a bimetallic alloy in a one-pot synthesis method. The core-shell-type structure of the nanoparticles has also been confirmed by ex situ energy-dispersive spectroscopy line-scan and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements with in situ ion etching on fully formed nanoparticles.

Over the past 40 years fundamental and application research into Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has been explored by academia, industry, and government laboratories. To date however, SERS has achieved little commercial success as an analytical technique. Researchers are tackling a variety of paths to help break through the commercial barrier by addressing the reproducibility in both the SERS substrates and SERS signals as well as continuing to explore the underlying mechanisms. To this end, investigators use a variety of methodologies, typically studying strongly binding analytes such as aromatic thiols and azarenes, and report SERS enhancement factor calculations. However a drawback of the traditional SERS enhancement factor calculation is that it does not yield enough information to understand substrate reproducibility, application potential with another analyte, or the driving factors behind the molecule-metal interaction. Our work at the US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center has focused on these questions and we have shown that thermodynamic principles play a key role in the SERS response and are an essential factor in future designs of substrates and applications. This work will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various experimental techniques used to report SERS enhancement with planar SERS substrates and present our alternative SERS enhancement value. We will report on three types of analysis scenarios that all yield different information concerning the effectiveness of the SERS substrate, practical application of the substrate, and finally the thermodynamic properties of the substrate. We believe that through this work a greater understanding for designing substrates will be achieved, one that is based on both thermodynamic and plasmonic properties as opposed to just plasmonic properties. This new understanding and potential change in substrate design will enable more applications for SERS based methodologies including targeting molecules that are traditionally not easily detected with SERS due to the perceived weak molecule-metal interaction of substrates.

In India, dengue endemic areas overlap with chikungunya-affected areas and both the viruses are transmitted by same vector, Aedes aegypti - thereby increasing opportunity of co-infection by both viruses. Present study was carried out to understand the DENV-CHIKV infection dynamics during recent outbreaks in eastern India (West Bengal state) and its implication on disease manifestations. Blood was collected from 326 symptomatic febrile patients. Patients' serum was subjected to serological diagnosis for presence of anti-dengue-IgM, anti-chikungunya-IgM antibodies and dengue-NS1 antigen by ELISA. Viral RNA was extracted, and presence of dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) genome, their viral load (VL), and serotype among infected patients' plasma was determined by real-time qRT-PCR. Statistical analysis was performed by using EPI INFO software. DENV and CHIKV were detected in 54% and 33% of symptomatic patients respectively, among whom 23% were harboring both viruses. WHO classified warning signs were detected among 64% DENV patients and 61% DENV-CHIKV double-infected patients. Patients with warning signs always had much higher DEN VL than those without warning signs. Hemorrhagic manifestation and abdominal pain was found in significantly higher frequency among patients with high dengue VL (>10,000 copies/ml). DENV2 was the most predominant serotype among monotypic dengue patients, whereas DENV2-DENV4 combination was most prevalent among patients infected with dual dengue serotypes. This study indicated that DENV-CHIKV double infection and high dengue VL contributed towards severe disease manifestations among infected patients. DENV2 and DENV2-DENV4 combination were the most prevalent serotype(s) found in current outbreak.

Despite intense investigation, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains an enormous clinical problem for which no specific therapies currently exist. In this study, we used intratracheal lipopolysaccharide or Pseudomonas bacteria administration to model experimental acute lung injury (ALI) and to further understand mediators of the resolution phase of ARDS. Recent work demonstrates macrophages transition from a predominant proinflammatory M1 phenotype during acute inflammation to an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype with ALI resolution. We tested the hypothesis that IL-4, a potent inducer of M2-specific protein expression, would accelerate ALI resolution and lung repair through reprogramming of endogenous inflammatory macrophages. In fact, IL-4 treatment was found to offer dramatic benefits following delayed administration to mice subjected to experimental ALI, including increased survival, accelerated resolution of lung injury, and improved lung function. Expression of the M2 proteins Arg1, FIZZ1, and Ym1 was increased in lung tissues following IL-4 treatment, and among macrophages, FIZZ1 was most prominently upregulated in the interstitial subpopulation. A similar trend was observed for the expression of macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) and Dectin-1 on the surface of alveolar macrophages following IL-4 administration. Macrophage depletion or STAT6 deficiency abrogated the therapeutic effect of IL-4. Collectively, these data demonstrate that IL-4-mediated therapeutic macrophage reprogramming can accelerate resolution and lung repair despite delayed use following experimental ALI. IL-4 or other therapies that target late-phase, proresolution pathways may hold promise for the treatment of human ARDS.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Preterm birth (PTB) is an important cause of prenatal death, neonatal morbidity and mortality and adult illness. Increased inflammation occurs in normal parturition, and inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress are found to be higher in PTB cases. The present study was planned to investigate the association of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) with mRNA expression of inflammatory pathway genes such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in preterm delivery (PTD) cases. METHODS: Maternal blood samples of PTD (n=30) cases and equal number of term delivery (n=30) were collected at the time of labour. Women occupationally exposed to OCPs and other high risk factors such as anaemia, hypertension, bacterial vaginosis, renal and heart disease, diabetes, etc. were excluded. The OCP levels were estimated by gas chromatography, and mRNA expressions of TNF-α and COX-2 genes were analysed using real-time PCR (qPCR). RESULTS: Significantly higher levels of ß-HCH (beta-hexachlorocyclohexane, 95% CI=2.08-4.633, p0 =0.001), p'p'-DDE (para, para-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, 95% CI=0.546-2.551, p0 =0.003), and o'p'-DDD (ortho, para-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane, 95% CI=0.004-0.690, P=0.047) were observed in maternal blood of PTB cases as compared to term delivery. The mRNA expressions of COX-2 and TNF-α genes were 3.13 and 2.31 folds higher in PTB cases in comparison to term delivery. l0 inear positive correlations were observed between period of gestation (POG) and ΔCt of COX-2 and TNF-α genes. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Environmental factors such as OCPs may be associated with inflammatory events showing gene-environment interaction in PTB cases. Evaluating the molecular control of inflammation along with gene environment interaction may be used as a model to explore the aetiology of idiopathic PTB cases and may be considered for the prognosis of adverse reproductive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of mirtazapine and its effect on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in patients of major-depressive disorder (MDD) with severe depression. METHODS: Patients (aged 18-60) with MDD diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) score ≥25 were included (n = 30). Mirtazapine was given in the doses of 30 mg/day. All patients were followed up for 12 weeks for the evaluation of clinical efficacy, safety along with serum BDNF and TNF-α levels. RESULTS: HAM-D score at the start of treatment was 30.1 ± 1.92, which significantly (p < 0.05) reduced to 13.47 ± 1.77 at 12 weeks of treatment. In responders, mean serum BDNF levels at the start of treatment were 2.32 ± 0.3 ng/ml, which significantly (p < 0.05) increased to 2.79 ± 0.33 ng/ml at 12 weeks of treatment and mean serum TNF-α levels at the start were 5.18 ± 0.67 pg/ml, which significantly decreased to 4.36 ± 0.72 pg/ml (p < 0.05) at 12 weeks of treatment. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that mirtazapine is effective and well tolerated in severely depressed patients and treatment response is associated with an increase in serum BDNF and a decrease in serum TNF-α levels.

Oxidative stress has been proposed as one of the causes involved in idiopathic fetal growth restriction (IFGR). However, the exact relationship between oxidative stress and IFGR is not understood. This study aimed at understanding the role of oxidative stress and antioxidant status in IFGR materno-fetal dyads and matched controls. 75 materno-fetal dyads with IFGR were enrolled with equal number of normal low risk controls. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured as marker of oxidative stress, while paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of serum were measured as markers of antioxidant status. MDA levels were increased in both maternal and cord blood of IFGR neonates as compared to controls (p < 0.001). TAC of serum were found to be decreased in IFGR (both maternal and cord blood) as compared to controls (p < 0.001; p < 0.05, respectively). PON1 activity was found to be decreased in the IFGR mothers while it was found increased in IFGR cord blood (p < 0.01; p < 0.001)). IFGR is a state of increased oxidative stress. Decreased PON1 enzymatic activity in mothers is also associated with IFGR.

AIMS: To examine incidence density rate and correlates of incident diabetes mellitus in a cohort of HIV-infected individuals compared with matched non-HIV-infected persons. METHODS: Data were obtained from the South Carolina Medicaid system and the enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System surveillance database for persons ≥ 18 years of age who had been attended to during the period 1994 to 2011. Time-dependent proportional hazards analysis and marginal structural models were used to analyse the data. RESULTS: A total of 13 632 individuals (6816, 1:1 matched HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected persons; median age 39 years; 57% male) contributed 88 359 person-years of follow-up. Incidence rate of diabetes was higher in the non-HIV-infected group compared with the HIV-infected group (13.60 vs. 11.35 per 1000 person-years). Multivariable hazards analysis suggested a significantly lower risk of incident diabetes among HIV-infected persons treated with combination antiretroviral therapy compared with the matched non-HIV-infected persons (adjusted hazards ratio 0.55; 95% CI 0.46-0.65). Among HIV-infected persons, marginal structural modelling suggested a significantly higher risk of diabetes with cumulative exposure to protease inhibitors over the observation period (adjusted relative risk 1.35; 95% CI 1.03-1.78), but this association was not significant for exposure to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Overall, female gender, older age, non-white race/ethnicity, and pre-existing hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity and hepatitis C infection were associated with higher risk of diabetes incidence. CONCLUSIONS: HIV infection may not be independently associated with increased risk of diabetes. Among HIV-infected persons, exposure to protease inhibitor-based regimens may increase the risk of diabetes. Healthcare providers should make every effort to use combination antiretroviral therapy regimens with a better cardiometabolic profile.

Five simplex and a multiplex-RT-PCR (m-RT-PCR) protocols were developed for detection and differentiation of bean pod mottle virus (BPMV), cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV), raspberry ringspot virus (RpRSV), soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV) infecting soybean. The simplex RT-PCR protocols produced virus-specific amplicons of 538 bp for BPMV, 139 bp for CLRV, 298 bp for RpRSV, 403 bp for SMV, and 282 bp for ToRSV, with sensitivity down to 10-4 diluted cDNA. Further, to detect all the five viruses simultaneously in a single tube a quintuplex RT-PCR protocol was optimized with as low as 10-3 diluted cDNA and 0.05 µM primer. To validate the reliability of the simplex RT-PCR protocol, imported soybean samples were tested by ELISA as well as RT-PCR. The results revealed that the developed protocol could detect the viruses in imported soybean, and found to be efficient than ELISA in resolving ambiguity in detection of seed borne viruses. The developed simplex and quintuplex RT-PCR protocol will be quite helpful for the diagnosis of soybean germplasm co-infected with viruses during the quarantine processing for ensuring virus free long term seed conservation in the National Gene Bank as well as for quarantine certification.

Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from 83mKr calibration electron captures (E∼45 keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to 2 cm precision with bias <1mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E≥1.5 MeV), from radiogenic electrons, yielding a precision of 3 cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Qßß in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation.

We investigated the association between glutathione S-transferases mu1 (GSTM1), theta 1 (GSTT1), Cytochrome P450IA1-T6235C (rs4646903, CYP1A1m1) and CYP1A1-1462V (rs1048943, CYP1A1m2) gene polymorphisms, and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) level with risk of preterm delivery (PTD). Maternal and cord blood samples of PTD (n = 156) cases and subjects of full-term delivery (FTD, n = 151) were collected at the time of delivery/after delivery. Women occupationally exposed to OCPs and other high-risk factors such as anemia, hypertension and dietary habit were excluded. The OCP levels were estimated by gas chromatography, and polymorphic analysis of GSTM1/GSTT1 and CYP450 genes was carried out using multiplex PCR and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism, respectively. The frequency of GSTM1/GSTT1 (null) genotype was significantly higher in PTD cases than in the controls. Significantly high levels of α-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), γ-HCH and Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p'p'-DDE) were observed in maternal blood, while significantly high levels of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and p'p'-DDE were found in the cord blood of PTD cases compared with the controls. A significant association was seen between ß-HCH and GSTM1 genotype when interaction between GSTM1 gene polymorphism, maternal blood OCP levels and period of gestation (POG) was ascertained. A significant reduction in POG was observed. Similarly, cord blood dieldrin levels were significantly associated with CYP1A1m2 (Aa/aa) with reduction in POG. Our observations indicate that higher levels of OCPs in pregnant women may be associated with increased risk of 'idiopathic' PTD. Furthermore, this study shows that the interaction between high OCPs levels and polymorphism in CYP1A1m2 and GSTM1 null genotypes may magnify the risk of PTD, thus providing evidence for a gene-environment interaction in pregnant women.

RESUMEN

We used x-ray Bragg projection ptychography (BPP) to map spatial variations of ferroelectric polarization in thin film PbTiO3, which exhibited a striped nanoscale domain pattern on a high-miscut (001) SrTiO3 substrate. By converting the reconstructed BPP phase image to picometer-scale ionic displacements in the polar unit cell, a quantitative polarization map was made that was consistent with other characterization. The spatial resolution of 5.7 nm demonstrated here establishes BPP as an important tool for nanoscale ferroelectric domain imaging, especially in complex environments accessible with hard x rays.
