Ways of improving the optical efficiency of luminescent solar concentrators based on multiple poly(methyl methacrylate) plastic optical fibers peripherally doped with two promising types of dyes are analyzed by means of a Monte-Carlo computational model developed by us. By comparing the performance of optical fibers doped with lumogen red and lumogen yellow, or combinations of them at several concentrations, this work clarifies how to achieve a better compromise between the trapping efficiency of the sunlight and the reabsorption of the light emitted by the mixture in stacked optical fibers connected to a photovoltaic solar cell.

The pilocarpine-induced (PILO) model has helped elucidate the electrophysiological and molecular aspects related to mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. It has been suggested that the extensive cell death and edema observed in the brains of these animals could be induced by increased inflammatory responses, such as the rapid release of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin 1 beta (Il1b). In this study, we investigate the role of endogenous Il1b in the acute phase of the PILO model. Our aim is twofold. First, we want to determine whether it is feasible to silence Il1b in the central nervous system using a non-invasive procedure. Second, we aim to investigate the effect of silencing endogenous Il1b and its antagonist, Il1rn.We used RNA interference applied non-invasively to knockdown Il1b and its endogenous antagonist Il1rn. We found that knocking down Il1b prior to pilocarpine injection increased the mortality rate of treated animals. Furthermore, we observed that, when exposing the animals to more Il1b by silencing its endogenous antagonist Il1rn, there was a better response to status epilepticus with decreased animal mortality in the acute phase of the PILO model. Thus, we show the feasibility of using a novel, less invasive approach to study genes involved in the inflammatory response in the central nervous system. Furthermore, our results provide suggestive evidence that modulating endogenous Il1b improves animal survival in the acute phase of the PILO model and may have effects that extend into the chronic phase.

Mixing/blending is a crucial operation in the manufacturing of solid drug products in the pharmaceutical industry. Although usually described and controlled in specific steps, blending is also inherent to other operations such as the transference of materials and equipment feeding systems. This study aimed to investigate a simple and fast wettability testing procedure capable to foresee the potential over-blending effects of lubricants occurring during the manufacturing of solid dosage forms. An industrial batch blend was submitted to two mixing mechanisms studies (diffusion and shear) during increasing time periods, and the developed wettability testing procedure was applied to assess their impact on blend water uptake. Capsules filled with these blends were tested for dissolution and disintegration. The method was applied to capsules with known dissolution results manufactured at an industrial scale. Results demonstrated that processes inducing shear stress led to less permeable blends with consequent retardation on capsules dissolution of at least 35% in the tested timepoints and obtained study metrics above 500 s. Moreover, disintegration testing was not able to detect non-compliant dissolutions, while the proposed wettability testing procedure proved to be able to identify performance failures. Wettability results correlate the effect of mixing mechanisms to capsules dissolution performance, evidencing that this technique can be applied in the pharmaceutical industry to evaluate possible over-blending effects.

OBJECTIVE: This study is perhaps the first to evaluate the influence of depression on the relationship between climacteric symptoms and food and nutritional insecurity (FNI). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study with a relatively large sample of climacteric women (N = 400), sociodemographic and clinical variables were investigated. We measured FNI, depression and climacteric symptoms with psychometrically sound instruments, namely the Brazilian Food Security Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the Kupperman Index, respectively. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were observed in the means of FNI according to education, income, marital status, history of depression, use of antidepressants and current depression. Furthermore, depression had strong indirect effects on the relationship between climacteric symptoms and FNI. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that targeting depression could benefit climacteric women, especially those with severe symptoms and in FNI.

BACKGROUND: Investigate methodological quality of clinical trials in mandibular third molar surgery and its compliance with the consort statement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed in five journal websites, chose the five scientific journals with the greatest impact factor in oral and maxillofacial surgery according to the SCImago Journal Rank. The compliance of studies with the CONSORT statement was assessed. Also, the risk of bias of each study was evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies were included. The average CONSORT compliance score was 25.50 (79.68%). Most studies were performed in the Americas (n = 14, 48.3%) and Asia (n = 10, 34.5%). Parallel-group (n=15, 51.7%) and split-mouth RCTs (n=11, 38%) were the most prevalent study design. An inverse correlation was observed between the year of publication and the number of Scopus citations (p<0.001), time between acceptance and publication (p<0.001), and time between study completion and publication (p=0.040). CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the correct use of guidelines, such as the CONSORT statement, is necessary to reduce methodological errors and possible bias, thereby ensuring reliable knowledge dissemination.

Mucositis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa resulting from high doses of radio/chemotherapy treatment and may lead to interruption of antineoplasic therapy. Soluble fibres, like pectin, increase SCFA production, which play a role in gut homoeostasis and inflammation suppression. Due to the properties of pectin, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a high-fibre (HF) diet on chemotherapy-induced mucositis in a murine model. C57/BL6 mice received control (AIN93M), HF, low/zero fibre (LF) diets for 10 d prior to mucositis challenging with irinotecan (75 mg/kg), or they were treated with acetate added to drinking water 5 d prior to and during the mucositis induction. Mice that received the HF diet showed decreased immune cells influx and improved histopathological parameters in the intestine, compared with mice that received the normal diet. Furthermore, the HF diet decreased intestinal permeability induced in the mucositis model when compared with the control group. This effect was not observed for acetate alone, which did not improve gut permeability. For instance, mice that received the LF diet had worsened gut permeability, compared with mice that received the normal diet and mucositis. The effects of the HF and LF diets were shown to modulate the intestinal microbiota, in which the LF diet increased the levels of Enterobacteriaceae, a group associated with gut inflammation, whereas the HF diet decreased this group and increased Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (SCFA producers) levels. In conclusion, the results demonstrated the importance of dietary fibre intake in the modulation of gut microbiota composition and homoeostasis maintenance during mucositis in this model.

AIMS: This study evaluated whether by-products from industrial processing of acerola (Malpighia glabra L.; AB) and guava (Psidium guajava L.; GB) fruit may stimulate the growth and metabolism of probiotic Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and induce changes in human colonic microbiota. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ability of non-digested and digested AB or GB to stimulate the growth ad metabolism of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05, Lactobacillus casei L-26 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 was evaluated. Changes in populations of distinct bacterial groups of human colonic microbiota induced by digested AB and GB were evaluated using an in vitro colonic fermentation system. Non-digested and digested AB and GB favoured probiotic growth. No difference among counts of probiotics in media with glucose, fructooligosaccharides and non-digested and digested AB and GB was found during a 48-h cultivation. Cultivation of probiotics in media with non-digested and digested AB and GB resulted in decreased pH, increased organic acid production and sugar consumption over time. Digested AB and GB caused overall beneficial changes in abundance of Bifidobacterium spp., Lactobacillus-Enterococcus, Eubacterium rectall-Clostridium coccoides and Bacteroides-Provotella populations, besides to decrease the pH and increase the short-chain fatty acid production during a 24-h in vitro colonic fermentation. CONCLUSION: AB and GB could be novel prebiotic ingredients because they can stimulate the growth and metabolism of probiotics and induce overall beneficial changes in human colonic microbiota. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: AB and GB stimulated the growth and metabolism of probiotics, in addition to induce beneficial alterations in human colonic microbiota composition and increase short-chain fatty acid production. These results characterize AB and GB as potential prebiotic ingredients and fruit processing by-products as sources of added-value compounds.

Objective: This study evaluated the associations between food intake - especially omega-3 (n-3) - and depressive symptoms in climacteric women.Methods: Four hundred climacteric women were included in this research. The Kupperman Index, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and a 3-day food diary were used to investigate climacteric symptoms, depressive symptoms, and food intake, respectively. Sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric variables were also explored.Results: Statistically significant associations were observed between depression and climacteric symptoms, climacteric phase, previous history of depression, antidepressant drug use, family income, sleep pattern, and consumption of carbohydrates, fiber, polyunsaturated fatty acids, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins C, D, and B12. No association was observed between n-3 consumption and depression.Conclusion: Climacteric symptoms and food intake are important factors linked to depression during the climacteric period. Further studies are needed to clarify the changes in this phase of women's lives, as well as to investigate the role of the diet in the depression treatment or prevention.

Reproduction of Trachurus picturatus off the western Portuguese coast was studied over 1 yr. During histological analyses, the presence of Kudoa sp. was detected in advanced vitellogenic oocytes. Kudoa infections are known to cause economic loss through the induction of post-mortem liquefaction of fish muscles, but ovarian infection as reported in this study will seriously affect the reproductive potential of the species and thus impact fisheries productivity. Only females showed gonad infection which led to total degradation of advanced vitellogenic oocytes. No macroscopic, somatic or condition indices revealed differences between infected and uninfected females, rendering this infection event a concealed suppression of reproduction.

Purpose: Recent studies have suggested that disruptions in the RANKL/RANK/OPG system might be involved in enamel conditions. The aim of this study was to test whether genetic polymorphisms in RANK, RANKL and OPG are associated with dental caries, developmental defects of enamel (DDE) and enamel microhardness. Study design: Saliva samples were collected from two subsets for the purpose of genomic DNA extraction. In the first subset, composed of 248 children, dental caries and DDE were evaluated during their clinical examination. In the second subset, composed of 72 children, enamel samples from the buccal surface of primary teeth were used for enamel microhardness analysis. Genetic polymorphisms in RANK, RANKL and OPG were genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reactions in all samples from both populations. The chi-square test was used for dental caries and DDE analysis while, one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-test was used for microhardness analysis. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was also calculated. The established alpha was 5%. Results: Caries experience analysis demonstrated a statistically-significant difference for OPG allele distribution in primary dentition (p=0.033). The studied polymorphisms in RANK, RANKL and OPG were not associated with DDE or enamel microhardness (p>0.05). Conclusion: The genetic polymorphism rs2073618 in OPG is associated with dental caries experience in primary dentition.

Objective: Bruxism is a condition defined as a masticatory muscle activity with an unexplored genetic background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between genetic polymorphisms in ACTN3 and bruxism. Study design: A total of 151 biological-unrelated children, aged 7-12 years were included in a case control ratio of 1:1.5. The data collection was performed during interview and clinical examination. Saliva samples were collected from all children and 3 genetic polymorphisms in the ACTN3 (rs678397, rs1671064 and rs1815739) were selected for genotyping using real time PCR. Pearson chisquare calculation was used to assess Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and to evaluate the association between genotypes and alleles frequencies for each genetic polymorphism in the co-dominant and recessive models. An alpha of 5% was used. Results: The genetic polymorphisms rs678397, rs1671064 and rs1815739 were associated with bruxism in the co-dominate model and in the recessive model (p<0.05). Allele distribution was also associated with bruxism for the polymorphisms rs678397 and rs1671064 (p<0.05). Conclusion: The genetic polymorphisms rs678397, rs1671064 and rs1815739 in ACTN3 are associated with bruxism and can contribute to the etiology of this condition in children.

BACKGROUND: To summarise the evidence on the associations between body mass index (BMI) and BMI in early adulthood, height, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and risk of lympho-haematopoietic cancers. METHOD: We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective studies and identified relevant studies published up to December 2017 by searching PubMed. A random-effects model was used to calculate dose-response summary relative risks (RRs). RESULTS: Our findings showed BMI, and BMI in early adulthood (aged 18-21 years) is associated with the risk of Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL and NHL), diffuse large beta-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Leukaemia including acute and chronic myeloid lymphoma (AML and CML), and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM). The summary RR per 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI were 1.12 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05-1.20] for HL, 1.05 (95% CI: 1.03-1.08) for NHL, 1.11 (95% CI: 1.05-1.16) for DLBCL, 1.06 (95% CI: 1.03-1.09) for ML, 1.09 (95% CI: 1.03-1.15) for leukaemia, 1.13 (95% CI: 1.04-1.24) for AML, 1.13 (95% CI: 1.05-1.22) for CML and 1.04 (95% CI: 1.00-1.09) for CLL, and were1.12 (95% CI: 1.05-1.19) for NHL, 1.22 (95% CI: 1.09-1.37) for DLBCL, and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.03-1.38) for FL for BMI in early adulthood analysis. Results on mortality showed a 15%, 16% and 17% increased risk of NHL, MM and leukaemia, respectively. Greater height increased the risk of NHL by 7%, DLBCL by 10%, FL by 9%, MM by 5% and Leukaemia by 7%. WHR was associated with increased risk of DLBCL by 12%. No association was found between higher WC and risk of MM. CONCLUSION: Our results revealed that general adiposity in adulthood and early adulthood, and greater height may increase the risk of almost all types of lympho-haematopoietic cancers and this adds to a growing body of evidence linking body fatness to several types of cancers.

Zoonotic diseases require a One Health approach for successful control and elimination due to the nature of their transmission between animals and humans. One Health recognises that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are all interconnected. Ethiopia has committed itself to controlling five prioritised zoonotic diseases (rabies, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis and echinococcosis), using a One Health approach. The National One Health Steering Committee (NOHSC) provides a framework for national stakeholders to address gaps in multisectoral communication, coordination and collaboration. In addition, the NOHSC oversees the formation of several specialised disease-focused groups, referred to as 'Technical Working Groups' (TWGs). These TWGs are responsible for developing disease prevention and control strategies, as well as implementing disease-focused public health activities and providing recommendations to the NOHSC. Ethiopia's success using the One Health approach and its efficient control of zoonotic diseases will depend on the commitment of all member Ministries to support the NOHSC and TWGs, as well as to build capacity in Ethiopia's workforce and laboratories, a task supported by its many international partners.


Les zoonoses étant par nature des maladies transmissibles entre les animaux et l'homme, l'approche Une seule santé est la seule qui permette de les contrôler efficacement en vue de les éliminer. Le concept Une seule santé repose sur la prise en compte de l'interconnexion entre la santé humaine, celle des animaux et celle de l'environnement. L'Éthiopie s'est fixé pour objectif de lutter contre cinq maladies zoonotiques classées comme prioritaires (rage, fièvre charbonneuse, brucellose, leptospirose et échinococcose) en suivant une approche Une seule santé. Le comité de pilotage national Une seule santé (NOHSC) apporte un cadre permettant aux parties prenantes du pays de résoudre les problèmes de communication, de coordination et de collaboration intersectorielles. En outre, le NOHSC supervise la création de plusieurs groupes de travail techniques dédiés à des maladies spécifiques. Ces groupes de travail sont chargés d'élaborer des stratégies de prévention et de contrôle, de mettre en oeuvre des activités de santé publique axées sur ces maladies et de formuler des recommandations à l'intention du NOHSC. La réussite des efforts déployés par l'Éthiopie pour appliquer les principes Une seule santé et l'efficacité de la lutte contre les maladies zoonotiques dépendront de l'engagement des ministères concernés à soutenir le NOHSC et les groupes de travail techniques et à renforcer les capacités des ressources humaines et des laboratoires éthiopiens, tâche qui bénéficie de l'appui de nombreux partenaires internationaux.


Toda labor eficaz de control y eliminación de las enfermedades zoonóticas, por la propia naturaleza de su transmisión entre animales y personas, pasa por abordar estas patologías desde los planteamientos de Una sola salud, noción esta que parte del reconocimiento de que salud humana, animal y ambiental están siempre interconectadas. Etiopía está embarcada en el innegociable empeño de combatir cinco enfermedades zoonóticas consideradas prioritarias (rabia, carbunco bacteridiano, brucelosis, leptospirosis y equinococosis) trabajando desde la óptica de Una sola salud. El Comité Directivo Nacional de Una sola salud proporciona a los interlocutores del país un marco de referencia que sirve para subsanar las lagunas existentes en cuanto a comunicación, coordinación y colaboración entre los diversos sectores. Ese órgano, además, supervisa la formación de varios grupos especializados y centrados en una u otra enfermedad, denominados grupos de trabajo técnicos, que tienen por cometido elaborar estrategias de prevención y control de una enfermedad concreta, llevar adelante acciones de salud pública dirigidas contra ella y formular recomendaciones para el Comité Directivo. El éxito de Etiopía a la hora de aplicar los postulados de Una sola salud y de combatir eficazmente las enfermedades zoonóticas dependerá del nivel de compromiso con que todos los ministerios copartícipes presten apoyo al Comité Directivo y los grupos de trabajo técnicos y ayuden a instaurar en el país un tejido lo bastante solvente de laboratorios y recursos humanos, empresa esta en la que Etiopía cuenta con el respaldo de sus numerosos asociados internacionales.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms in ESR1, ESR2, and ESRRB and dental fluorosis (DF) in a well-characterized sample of children from Curitiba, Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a representative sample of 538 children, 12-year-old were evaluated. DF was assessed in erupted permanent teeth by the Dean's index modified. Fourteen polymorphisms were selected in intronic and intergenic regions of ESR1, ESR2, and ESRRB and genotyped in genomic DNA source from saliva using TaqMan chemistry and end-point analysis. Allele and genotype distributions between DF and DF free groups were analyzed using the Epi Info 7.2. Chi-square or Fisher's exact tests at a level of significance of 5% and odds ratios calculations with 95% confidence intervals were used to determine the statistical associations. RESULTS: Among 538 children, 147 were DF and 391 were DF free. Genotype distribution for the polymorphism rs12154178 in ESR1 was different between the two groups (p = 0.037; OR = 0.91; CI = 0.67-1.22). The dominant model analysis (AA+AC vs. CC) demonstrated that CC is a protective factor for DF (p = 0.038; OR = 0.51, 0.27-0.97 95% CI). We did not find differences in frequency distributions in the other evaluated polymorphisms. CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that ESR1 is associated with DF. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dental fluorosis is an important condition that affects the mineralized tissues of the teeth. In severe cases, the treatment takes time and is extremely costly. This research provides evidences that there are genetic factors involved in dental fluorosis and will help professionals to plan more precise strategies to reduce dental fluorosis occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Automated equipment with customized freezing curves can be used to cryopreserve ram sperm, but none is considered a standard. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the post-thawing quality of ram sperm frozen using a conventional freezing curve and two controlled-rate curves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six ejaculates were collected from four rams (n = 24). In the conventional curve (110 min), sperm was cooled at -0.3 to -0.5°C min-1 until 5°C, stabilized for 60 min and exposed to liquid nitrogen (LN2) vapor for 10 min (-80°C) before submersion. The slow-customized (SC) curve (126.2 min) used a rate of -0.25°C min-1 until 5°C, stabilization for 60 min and a rate of -20°C min-1 until -120°C before immersion in LN2. Rates for the fast-customized (FC) curve (75 min) were: -0.3°C min-1 until 5°C; -3°C min-1 until -10°C; -5°C min-1 until -35°C; and -4°C min-1 until immersion in LN2 (-43°C). RESULTS: Velocity in a straight line and beat-cross frequency were lower for spermatozoa frozen with the FC than with the conventional curve (P < 0.05). The FC curve resulted in more membrane and acrosome damages than the other curves (P < 0.05). Mitochondrial membrane potential was lower with the SC than with the other curves (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The conventional curve was more efficient than both tested automated freezing curves. The FC curve may be an alternative to the SC curve due to the shorter processing time.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), predominantly acetic, propionic, and butyric acids, are bacterial metabolites with an important role in the maintenance of homeostasis due to their metabolic and immunomodulatory actions. Some evidence suggests that they may also be relevant during infections. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of SCFAs in the effector functions of neutrophils to an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Using a subcutaneous model to generate a mono, isolated infection of A. actinomycetemcomitans, we demonstrated that the presence of the SCFAs in situ did not affect leukocyte accumulation but altered the effector mechanisms of migrating neutrophils by downregulating the production of cytokines, their phagocytic capacity, and killing the bacteria, thus impairing the containment of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Similar effects were observed with bacteria-stimulated neutrophils incubated with SCFAs in vitro. These effects were independent of free-fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) activation, the main SCFA receptor expressed on neutrophils, occurring possibly through inhibition of histone deacetylases because similar effects were obtained by using histone deacetylase inhibitors, such as SAHA, MS-275, and RGFP 966. Considering the findings of this study, we hypothesized that in an infectious condition, SCFAs may exert a detrimental effect on the host by inhibiting neutrophil's effector functions.

The emission of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) can occur during biological nutrient removal. Denitrifying enhanced biological phosphorus removal (d-EBPR) systems are an efficient means of removing phosphate and nitrogen, performed by denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (d-PAOs). The aim of this work was to study the effect of various combinations of electron acceptors, nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2-), and N2O, on the denitrification pathway of a d-EBPR system. Batch tests were performed with different electron acceptor combinations, to explore the denitrification pathway. Reverse transcriptase-qPCR (RT-qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing, combined with chemical analysis, were used to study gene expression, microbial diversity, and denitrification kinetics. The potential for N2O production was greater than the potential for its reduction in most tests. A strong correlation was observed between the N2O reduction rate and the relative gene expression of nitrous oxide reductase per nitrite reductase (nosZ/(nirS + nirK)), suggesting that the expression of denitrifying marker genes is a strong predictor of the N2O reduction rate. The d-EBPR community maintained a core population with low variations throughout the study. Furthermore, phylogenetic analyses of the studied marker genes revealed that the organisms actively involved in denitrification were closely related to Thauera sp., Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis, and Candidatus Competibacter denitrificans. Moreover, Competibacter-related OTUs seem to be important contributors to the N2O reduction capacity of the system, likely scavenging the N2O produced by other organisms. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the microbial biochemistry and the genetics involving biological denitrification removal, important to minimize N2O emissions in wastewater treatment plants.

Prato cheese, a typical ripened Brazilian cheese, contains high levels of sodium, and the excess intake of this micronutrient is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. A technological alternative to reduce the sodium content in foods is to replace NaCl with KCl and the addition of flavor enhancers. The present study aimed to combine quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) and temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) to assess the sensory profile of reduced-sodium probiotic prato cheese with the addition of flavor enhancers. Five formulations of probiotic prato cheese were manufactured using 1% (wt/wt) salt as follows: C1 (100% NaCl), C2 (50:50 NaCl:KCl), C3 (50:50 NaCl:KCl + 1% arginine), C4 (50:50 NaCl:KCl + 1% yeast extract), and C5 (50:50 NaCl:KCl + 1% oregano extract). Both methods indicated that the addition of flavor enhancers modified the sensory profile of the reduced-sodium probiotic prato cheese. The QDA revealed that flavor enhancers-in particular, yeast and oregano extract-increased the saltiness of samples C4 and C5, respectively, and that the other flavor enhancer, arginine (sample C3), most modified the attributes of prato cheese. The TDS dominance curves revealed that the addition of yeast extract (sample C4) had a positive effect on cheese flavor because it minimized the bitter taste perception resulting from the addition of potassium chloride. Overall, QDA and TDS used together provided interesting insights for establishing the sensory profile of reduced-sodium probiotic prato cheese.

OBJECTIVE: As part of the World Cancer Research Fund International Continuous Update Project, we updated the systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies to quantify the dose-response between foods and beverages intake and colorectal cancer risk. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and several databases up to 31 May 2015. STUDY SELECTION: Prospective studies reporting adjusted relative risk estimates for the association of specific food groups and beverages and risk of colorectal, colon and rectal cancer. DATA SYNTHESIS: Dose-response meta-analyses using random effect models to estimate summary relative risks (RRs). RESULTS: About 400 individual study estimates from 111 unique cohort studies were included. Overall, the risk increase of colorectal cancer is 12% for each 100 g/day increase of red and processed meat intake (95% CI = 4-21%, I2=70%, pheterogeneity (ph)<0.01) and 7% for 10 g/day increase of ethanol intake in alcoholic drinks (95% CI = 5-9%, I2=25%, ph = 0.21). Colorectal cancer risk decrease in 17% for each 90g/day increase of whole grains (95% CI = 11-21%, I2 = 0%, ph = 0.30, 6 studies) and 13% for each 400 g/day increase of dairy products intake (95% CI = 10-17%, I2 = 18%, ph = 0.27, 10 studies). Inverse associations were also observed for vegetables intake (RR per 100 g/day =0.98 (95% CI = 0.96-0.99, I2=0%, ph = 0.48, 11 studies) and for fish intake (RR for 100 g/day = 0.89 (95% CI = 0.80-0.99, I2=0%, ph = 0.52, 11 studies), that were weak for vegetables and driven by one study for fish. Intakes of fruits, coffee, tea, cheese, poultry and legumes were not associated with colorectal cancer risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reinforce the evidence that high intake of red and processed meat and alcohol increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Milk and whole grains may have a protective role against colorectal cancer. The evidence for vegetables and fish was less convincing.

BACKGROUND: In the 2007 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research Second Expert Report, the expert panel judged that there was strong evidence that alcoholic drinks and body fatness increased esophageal cancer risk, whereas fruits and vegetables probably decreased its risk. The judgments were mainly based on case-control studies. As part of the Continuous Update Project, we updated the scientific evidence accumulated from cohort studies in this topic. METHODS: We updated the Continuous Update Project database up to 10 January 2017 by searching in PubMed and conducted dose-response meta-analyses to estimate summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 57 cohort studies were included in 13 meta-analyses. Esophageal adenocarcinoma risk was inversely related to vegetable intake (RR per 100 g/day: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.80-0.99, n = 3) and directly associated with body mass index (RR per 5 kg/m2: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.34-1.61, n = 9). For esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, inverse associations were observed with fruit intake (RR for 100 g/day increment: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.75-0.94, n = 3) and body mass index (RR for 5 kg/m2 increment: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.56-0.73, n = 8), and direct associations with intakes of processed meats (RR for 50 g/day increment: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.11-2.28, n = 3), processed and red meats (RR for 100 g/day increment: 1.37, 95% CI: 1.04-1.82, n = 3) and alcohol (RR for 10 g/day increment: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.12-1.41, n = 6). CONCLUSIONS: Evidence from cohort studies suggested a protective role of vegetables and body weight control in esophageal adenocarcinomas development. For squamous cell carcinomas, higher intakes of red and processed meats and alcohol may increase the risk, whereas fruits intake may play a protective role.
