RESUMEN

The rational design of highly active and durable non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significantly important but technically challenging. Herein, a phosphor and cobalt dual doped copper-nickel alloy (P, Co-CuNi) electrocatalyst with high-efficient HER performance is prepared by one-step electrodeposition method and reported for the first time. As a result, P, Co-CuNi only requires an ultralow overpotential of 56 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm-2, with remarkable stability for over 360 h, surpassing most previously reported transition metal-based materials. It is discovered that the P doping can simultaneously increase the electrical conductivity and enhance the corrosion resistance, while the introduction of Co can precisely modulate the sub-nanosheets morphology to expose more accessible active sites. Moreover, XPS, UPS, and DFT calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of different dopants can achieve the most optimal electronic structure around Cu and Ni, causing a down-shifted d-band center, which reduces the hydrogen desorption free energy of the rate-determining step (H2O + e- + H* → H2 + OH-) and consequently enhances the intrinsic activity. This work provides a new cognition toward the development of excellent activity and stability HER electrocatalysts and spurs future study for other NiCu-based alloy materials.

Bandwidth limitation in optoelectrical components and the chromatic dispersion-induced power fading phenomenon cause severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) in high-speed intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) optical interconnects. While the equalizer implemented in the receiver's digital signal processing procedure can mitigate ISI, it also inevitably enhances the noise located in the decayed frequency region, known as equalization-enhanced colored noise (EECN). Additionally, the nonlinear impairments of the modulator and photodetector also deteriorate the performance of the IM-DD system, especially for high-order modulation formats. In this work, we propose a gradient-descent noise whitening (GD-NW) algorithm to address EECN and extend it by introducing nonlinear kernels to simultaneously mitigate EECN and nonlinear impairments. The proposed algorithms are compared with conventional counterparts in terms of the achievable baud rate and the receiver optical power sensitivity. As a proof-of-concept experiment, we validate the principles of the proposed algorithms by successfully transmitting 360-GBd on-off-keying (OOK) and 180-GBd 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM-4) signals in the back-to-back case under a 62-GHz brick-wall bandwidth limitation. 280-GBd OOK and 150-GBd PAM-4 transmissions are also demonstrated over 1-km standard single-mode fiber with a bit error rate below 7% hard-decision forward error correction aided by the proposed approach.

Neural network (NN)-based equalizers have been widely applied for dealing with nonlinear impairments in intensity-modulated direct detection (IM/DD) systems due to their excellent performance. However, the computational complexity (CC) is a major concern that limits the real-time application of NN-based receivers. In this Letter, we propose, to our knowledge, a novel weight-adaptive joint mixed-precision quantization and pruning approach to reduce the CC of NN-based equalizers, where only integer arithmetic is taken into account instead of floating-point operations. The NN connections are either directly cutoff or represented by a proper number of quantization bits by weight partitioning, leading to a hybrid compressed sparse network that computes much faster and consumes less hardware resources. The proposed approach is verified in a 50-Gb/s 25-km pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 IM/DD link using a directly modulated laser (DML) in the C-band. Compared with the traditional fully connected NN-based equalizer operated with standard floating-point arithmetic, about 80% memory can be saved at a minimum network size without degrading the system performance. Quantization is also shown to be more suitable to over-parameterized NN-based equalizers compared with NNs selected at a minimum size.

Clock recovery (CR) algorithms that support higher baud rates and advanced modulation formats are crucial for short-distance optical interconnections, and it is desirable to push CR to operate at baud rate with minimal computing resources and power. In this Letter, we proposed a hardware-efficient and multiplication operation-free baud-rate timing error detector (TED) as a solution to meet these demands. Our approach involves employing both the absolute value of samples and the nonlinear sign operation to emphasize the clock tone, which is deteriorated by severe bandwidth limitation in Nyquist and faster than Nyquist (FTN) systems. Through experimental investigations based on a transceiver system with a 3 dB bandwidth of 30 GHz, the proposed baud-rate TED exhibits excellent performance. The proposed scheme successfully achieves clock synchronization of the received signals with the transmitted signals, including 50 GBaud PAM4/8, 80 GBaud PAM4, and up to 120 GBaud PAM4 FTN signals. To the best of our knowledge, the CR based on the proposed baud-rate TED is the most optimal solution for ultrahigh-speed short-reach IM/DD transmission, comprehensively considering the timing jitter, bit error rate (BER), and implementation complexity.

Direct detection system is expected to possess the phase and polarization diversity in order to achieve high spectral efficiency and fiber impairment compensation such as chromatic dispersion and polarization rotation. In this Letter, we theoretically extend the concept of the proposed Jones-space field recovery (JSFR) to include a dynamic polarization rotation matrix and experimentally demonstrate the rapid polarization state tracking ability of the JSFR receiver based on a 3 × 3 optical coupler. Under a rotation of the state of polarization at a rate of 1 Mrad/s, we successfully transmit 59-GBd dual-polarization 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation signals over an 80-km standard single-mode fiber based on a decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) or a recursive least square (DD-RLS), with a bit-error rate below the 14% hard-decision forward error correction threshold of 1 × 10-2. The experimental results indicate that the legacy polarization tracking algorithms designed for coherent optical communication are also applicable for this direct detection scheme. To our best knowledge, this work demonstrates the first polarization rotation-tolerant direct detection system with phase and polarization diversity, providing a low-cost and high-speed solution for short-reach communications.

We experimentally demonstrate a system-agnostic and training-data-free nonlinearity compensator, using affinity propagation (AP) clustering in single- and multi-channel coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) for up to 3200 km transmission. We show that AP outperforms benchmark deterministic and clustering algorithms by effectively tackling stochastic nonlinear distortions and inter-channel nonlinearities. AP offers up to almost 4 dB power margin extension over linear equalization in single-channel 16-quadrature amplitude-modulated CO-OFDM and a 1.4 dB increase in Q-factor over digital back-propagation in multi-channel quaternary phase-shift keying CO-OFDM. Simulated results indicate transparency to higher modulation format orders and better efficiency when a multi-carrier structure is considered.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). Radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) is a serious complication of RT. Late symptoms of radiation-induced TLI are irreversible and manifest as memory loss, cognitive impairment, and even temporal lobe necrosis (TLN). It is currently believed that the mechanism of radiation-induced TLI involves microvascular injury, neuron and neural stem cell injury, glial cell damage, inflammation, and the production of free radicals. Significant RT-related structural changes and dose-dependent changes in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volume and morphology were observed through computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which were common imaging assessment tools. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), dispersion kurtosis imaging (DKI), susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-fMRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and positron emission tomography (PET) can be used for early diagnosis and prognosis evaluation according to functional, molecular, and cellular processes of TLI. Early diagnosis of TLI is helpful to reduce the incidence of TLN and its related complications. This review summarizes the clinical features, mechanisms, and imaging of radiation-induced TLI in HNC patients. KEY POINTS: • Radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) is a clinical complication and its symptoms mainly include memory impairment, headache, and cognitive impairment. • The mechanisms of TLI include microvascular injury, cell injury, and inflammatory and free radical injury. Significant RT-related structural changes and dose-dependent changes in TL volume and morphology were observed through CT and MRI. • SWI, MRS, DTI, and DKI and other imaging examinations can detect anatomical and functional, molecular, and cellular changes of TLI.

RESUMEN

A variety of systemic chemotherapy regimens have been used for recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC). However, most guidelines have been derived from a single clinical trial, and no studies have comprehensively compared their efficacy and safety. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. Eligible studies reported overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and ≥ 3 adverse events rate (AEs). Eighteen eligible trials involving 4930 patients and 15 treatment regimens were included. The results suggest that patients with R/M HNSCC exhibit better tumor response with the cetuximab/platinum/5-FU, pembrolizumab/platinum/5-FU or pembrolizumab alone, accompanied by a low AE rate. Nivolumab also showed better efficacy than other single agents. Immunotherapy has achieved better efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The urine protein/creatinine ratio (UPCR) is commonly used in current clinical practice. However, there are only few published clinical data on UPCR from large cohorts of Chinese adults. This study aimed to determine the overall and age- and sex-specific UPCR reference values for healthy Dalian adults. METHODS: According to the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute EP28-A3c guidelines, 1321 healthy Dalian adults (646 men and 675 women) aged 20-69 years were enrolled. Urine protein and creatinine levels were analyzed in the random morning spot urine samples, and UPCR was calculated. The 95th percentile of the UPCR was used as the normal upper limit. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to test differences among groups. RESULTS: The UPCR reference value was 141.7 mg/g for the entire cohort, 128.7 mg/g for men, and 150.8 mg/g for women. In addition, women had relatively higher UPCR values than men in the same age group. We also compared the UPCR reference values between different estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) groups and found that women had significantly higher UPCR values than men in the normal eGFR groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the overall and age- and sex-specific UPCR reference values for healthy Dalian adults.

RESUMEN

Radiation-induced myocardial fibrosis (RIMF) is a potentially lethal clinical complication of chest radiotherapy (RT) and a final stage of radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD). RIMF is characterized by decreased ventricular elasticity and distensibility, which can result in decreased ejection fraction, heart failure and even sudden cardiac death. Together, these conditions impair the long-term health of post-RT survivors and limit the dose and intensity of RT required to effectively kill tumour cells. Although the exact mechanisms involving in RIMF are unclear, increasing evidence indicates that the occurrence of RIMF is related to various cells, regulatory molecules and cytokines. However, accurately diagnosing and identifying patients who may progress to RIMF has been challenging. Despite the urgent need for an effective treatment, there is currently no medical therapy for RIMF approved for routine clinical application. In this review, we investigated the underlying pathophysiology involved in the initiation and progression of RIMF before outlining potential preventative and therapeutic strategies to counter this toxicity.

This work contributes experimental demonstrations and comprehensive comparisons of various modulation and coding techniques for 200 Gb/s intensity modulation and direct detection links including four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), PAM-6, trellis-coded modulation (TCM) over PAM and discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmission. Both C-band Mach-Zehnder modulator and O-band electro-absorption modulated laser transmitters were examined for intra-data center applications based on state-of-the-art commercial components.

A novel nonlinear equalizer based on a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) deep neural network (DNN) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for compensation of inter-subcarrier nonlinearities in a 40 Gb/s coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system. Experimental results reveal that MIMO-DNN can extend the power margin by 4 dB at 2000 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission when compared to linear compensation or conventional single-input single-output DNN. It is also found that MIMO-DNN outperforms digital back propagation by increasing up to 1 dB the effectiveQ-factor and reducing by a factor of three the computational cost.

Accumulated studies have reported the prognostic significance of prealbumin in liver cancer, but the results were not conclusive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between pretreatment serum prealbumin and clinical outcome of liver cancer patients through a meta-analysis. We comprehensively searched EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane library to identify eligible studies. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were utilized to evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment serum prealbumin in overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) of liver cancer patients. A total of 3470 patients from 10 eligible studies were finally included for analysis. The combined effects of prealbumin on liver cancer patients' OS and RFS were HR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.46-2.30, P < 0.001 and HR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.01-2.14, P = 0.045, respectively. Sensitivity and subgroup analysis showed that the pooled HR of prealbumin on liver cancer patients' OS was stable. Since potential publication bias was identified in the OS studies, the trim-and-fill method therefore was performed to explore publication bias, and the results showed reliability. This meta-analysis shows that low pretreatment serum prealbumin is significantly associated with poor prognosis of liver cancer patients.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective method for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). However, RT may cause side effects during and after treatment. Radiation-induced brainstem injury (BSI) is often neglected due to its low incidence and short survival time and because it is indistinguishable from intracranial tumor progression. It is currently believed that the possible mechanism of radiation-induced BSI includes increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and damage of vascular endothelial cells, neurons, and glial cells as well as an inflammatory response and oxidative stress. At present, it is still difficult to avoid BSI even with several advanced RT techniques. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is the most commonly used therapeutic technique in the field of RT. Compared with early conformal therapy, it has greatly reduced the injury to normal tissues. Proton beam radiotherapy (PBT) and heavy ion radiotherapy (HIT) have good dose distribution due to the presence of a Bragg peak, which not only results in better control of the tumor but also minimizes the dose to the surrounding normal tissues. There are many clinical studies on BSI caused by IMRT, PBT, and HIT. In this paper, we review the mechanism, dosimetry, and other aspects of BSI caused by IMRT, PBT, and HIT.Key Points• Enhanced MRI imaging can better detect radiation-induced BSI early.• This article summarized the dose constraints of brainstem toxicity in clinical studies using different techniques including IMRT, PBT, and HIT and recommended better dose constraints pattern to clinicians.• The latest pathological mechanism of radiation-induced BSI and the corresponding advanced treatment methods will be discussed.

Adaptive moment estimation (Adam) is a popular optimization method to estimate large-scale parameters in neural networks. This paper proposes the first use of Adam algorithm to fast and stably converge large-scale tap coefficients of polynomial nonlinear equalizer (PNLE) for 129-Gbit/s PAM8-based optical interconnects. PNLE is one of simplified Volterra nonlinear equalizer for making a trade-off between complexity and performance. Different from serial least-mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm, Adam algorithm is a parallel processing algorithm, which can obtain globally optimal tap coefficients without being trapped in locally optimal tap coefficients. Timing error is one of the main obstacles to the PAM systems with high baud rate and high modulation order. Owing to parallel processing and global optimization, Adam algorithm has much better performance on resisting the timing error, which can achieve faster, more-stable and lower-MSE convergence compared to LMS adaptive algorithm. In conclusion, Adam algorithm shows great potential for converging the tap coefficients of PNLE in PAM8-based optical interconnects.

Coherent optical communication systems are still too expensive for metro and short reach networks in the near future. Coherent detection with an intensity modulator replacing a costly dual-polarization in-phase and quadrature modulator could offer a good trade-off between cost and performance for metro networks. The major performance limit of such systems is the nonlinearity. To the best of our knowledge, this Letter offers the first known investigation on nonlinearity of a high speed intensity modulation and coherent detection system using an integrated laser and electro-absorption modulator. Advanced nonlinearity mitigation digital signal processing (DSP) are proposed including a 2×1 multiple-input single-output complex transversal Volterra feed-forward equalizer (FFE) filter, a first proposed post-FFE noise cancellation filter taking into account both pre- and post-cursor noise correlations based on a simple autocorrelation coefficient calculation, and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator. The receiver DSP needs no carrier and phase recovery that is required by a conventional coherent receiver DSP. Results show that, compared to a simple linear FFE equalization, the proposed nonlinear DSP enables over 8 and 4 dB improvement in optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity at 7% overhead hard-decision feed-forward error correction (FEC) and 20% overhead soft-decision FEC threshold bit error rates (BERs), respectively, for a 56 Gb/s intensity modulation and coherent detection system. To the best of our knowledge, a record 18 dB OSNR sensitivity at a hard-decision FEC threshold BER of 3.8×10-3 is also achieved.

BACKGROUND: Sevoflurane preconditioning induces brain ischemic tolerance, but the mechanism remains poorly elucidated. Nitration is an important form of post-translational modification in pathological signaling. This study was to investigate the role of thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) nitration in neuroprotection effect induced by sevoflurane preconditioning in a transient stroke model in rats. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were preconditioned with 2% sevoflurane or vehicle oxygen exposure, 1 h per day, for 5 consecutive days. At 24 h after the last exposure, rats were subjected to focal brain ischemia induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 90 min, followed by 72-h reperfusion. Trx-1 expression and activity, as well as the content of nitrotyrosine at penumbra were detected at 24 h after preconditioning and 2, 8, 24, 72 h after MCAO. Nitrated Trx-1 was examined by immunoprecipitation at 8 h after MCAO. The role of Trx-1 nitration in ischemic tolerance was assessed by administration of nitrated human-Trx-1 prior to MCAO. Neurological scores, brain infarct volumes and TUNEL staining were evaluated at 24 h after reperfusion. RESULTS: Ischemic stroke decreased Trx-1 activity but not the expression in penumbra tissue. The content of nitrotyrosine was elevated after MCAO. Preconditioning with sevoflurane increased Trx-1 activity and reduced its nitration at 8 h after MCAO in comparison with vehicle preconditioning. The decrement of Trx-1 activity was correlated with its nitration level. Exogenous administration of nitrated human-Trx-1 reversed the brain ischemic tolerance of sevoflurane preconditioning, exacerbating brain infarct volume, neurobehavioral defects and apoptosis, while administration of human-Trx-1 had no effect on the sevoflurane preconditioning-induced neuroprotection. CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke reduces Trx-1 activity via post-translational nitrative modulation in rats. Sevoflurane preconditioning induces brain ischemic tolerance and anti-apoptosis by partially preserving Trx-1 activity via inhibiting nitration.

We experimentally demonstrate the generation and successful transmission of a single-lane 180 Gb/s (90 GBd) duo-binary four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (DB-PAM-4) signal over an 80 km standard single-mode fiber with a net data-rate of 150 Gb/s, enabled by a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator-aided dispersion pre-compensation. A net data rate of 168 Gb/s is also achievable, for ranges up to 40 km. To mitigate bandwidth limitations and error spreading, pre-coded DB-PAM-4 is used; the pre-coding provides a gain of approximately 1 dB. A Volterra filter and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator are used at the receiver side to reduce the linear and nonlinear distortions.

Nucleolin is a ubiquitously expressed protein and participates in many important biological processes, such as cell cycle regulation and ribosomal biogenesis. The activity of nucleolin is regulated by intracellular localization and post-translational modifications, including phosphorylation, methylation, and ADP-ribosylation. Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) is a category of recently verified forms of post-translational modifications and exerts various effects on the target proteins. In the studies reported here, we discovered SUMOylational modification of human nucleolin protein at Lys-294, which facilitated the mRNA binding property of nucleolin by maintaining its nuclear localization. In response to arsenic exposure, nucleolin-SUMO was induced and promoted its binding with gadd45α mRNA, which increased gadd45α mRNA stability and protein expression, subsequently causing GADD45α-mediated cell death. On the other hand, ectopic expression of Mn-SOD attenuated the arsenite-generated superoxide radical level, abrogated nucleolin-SUMO, and in turn inhibited arsenite-induced apoptosis by reducing GADD45α expression. Collectively, our results for the first time demonstrate that nucleolin-SUMO at K294R plays a critical role in its nucleus sequestration and gadd45α mRNA binding activity. This novel biological function of nucleolin is distinct from its conventional role as a proto-oncogene. Therefore, our findings here not only reveal a new modification of nucleolin protein and its novel functional paradigm in mRNA metabolism but also expand our understanding of the dichotomous roles of nucleolin in terms of cancer development, which are dependent on multiple intracellular conditions and consequently the appropriate regulations of its modifications, including SUMOylation.
