RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This retrospective, single-center, case-control study evaluated the safety and efficacy of Computed tomography (CT)-guided microwave ablation (MWA) for pulmonary nodules located in the right middle lobe (RML), a challenging location associated with a high frequency of complications. METHODS: Between May 2020 and April 2022, 71 patients with 71 RML pulmonary nodules underwent 71 MWA sessions. To comparison, 142 patients with 142 pulmonary nodules in non-RML were selected using propensity score matching. The technical success, technique efficacy, complications, and associated factors were analyzed. The duration of the procedure and post-ablation hospital stay were also recorded. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in 100% of all patients. There were no significant differences in technique efficacy rates between the RML and non-RML groups (97.2% vs. 95.1%, p = 0.721). However, both major (47.9% vs. 19.7%, p < 0.001) and minor (26.8% vs. 11.3%, p = 0.004) pneumothorax were more common in the RML group than non-RML group. MWA for RML pulmonary nodules was identified as an independent risk factor for pneumothorax (p < 0.001). The duration of procedures (51.7 min vs. 35.3 min, p < 0.001) and post-ablation hospital stays (4.7 days vs. 2.8 days, p < 0.001) were longer in the RML group than non-RML group. CONCLUSIONS: CT-guided MWA for RML pulmonary nodules showed comparable efficacy compared with other lobes, but posed a higher risk of pneumothorax complications, necessitating longer MWA procedure times and extended hospital stays.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to build and validate a prediction model that can predict progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after image-guided microwave ablation (MWA) plus chemotherapy. METHODS: Data from a previous multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) was used and assigned to either the training data set or the external validation data set according to the location of the centers. Potential prognostic factors were identified by multivariable analysis in the training data set and used to construct a nomogram. After bootstraps internal and external validation, the predictive performance was evaluated by concordance index (C-index), Brier Score, and calibration curves. Risk group stratification was conducted using the score calculated by the nomogram. Then a simplified scoring system was built to make risk group stratification more convenient. RESULTS: In total, 148 patients (training data set: n = 112; external validation data set: n = 36) were enrolled for analysis. Six potential predictors were identified and entered into the nomogram, including weight loss, histology, clinical TNM stage, clinical N category, tumor location, and tumor size. The C-indexes were 0.77 (95% CI, 0.65-0.88, internal validation) and 0.64 (95% CI, 0.43-0.85, external validation). The survival curves of different risk groups also displayed significant distinction (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: We found weight loss, histology, clinical TNM stage, clinical N category, tumor location, and tumor size were prognostic factors of progression after receiving MWA plus chemotherapy and constructed a prediction model that can predict PFS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The nomogram and scoring system will assist physicians to predict the individualized PFS of their patients and decide whether to perform or terminate MWA and chemotherapy according to the expected benefits. KEY POINTS: • Build and validate a prognostic model using the data from a previous randomized controlled trial to predict progression-free survival after receiving MWA plus chemotherapy. • Weight loss, histology, clinical TNM stage, clinical N category, tumor location, and tumor size were prognostic factors. • The nomogram and scoring system published by the prediction model can be used to assist physicians to make clinical decisions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, we proposed a novel anatomy-based five-settlement method for transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (fs-TAT) for patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. The safety of this new method has been reported in a retrospective study of a single cohort. The safety and short-term oncological outcome of this method was confirmed by comparing it with conventional open surgery (COT) in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. METHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent fs-TAT or COT by a single surgeon from February 2019 to December 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. All patients were diagnosed with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma and underwent lobectomy and ipsilateral central compartment neck dissection. Propensity score matching was used to compare the technical safety and short-term oncologic outcomes of fs-TAT and COT for the purpose of reducing potential selection bias. Reporting was consistent with the STROCSS 2021 guidelines. RESULT: After propensity score matching, 460 (fs-TAT: 230; COT: 230) patients remained in the study population. There were no significant differences in sex, age, tumor size, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or tumor multifocality between the groups. The operative time was longer [104.5 (90.3, 120.0) vs. 62.0 (52.0, 76.0), P < 0.001] and the total postoperative drainage volume [135(90, 210) vs. 75 (55, 115), P < 0.001] was greater in the fs-TAT group than in the COT group. However, intraoperative bleeding [3.0 (2.0, 5.0) vs. 5.0 (5.0, 7.5), P < 0.001] was greater, and the median number of lymph nodes yielded [5.0 (2.3, 8.0) vs. 7.0 (5.0, 11.0), P < 0.001] was greater in the COT group than in the fs-TAT group. The groups exhibited no significant difference in the rate of complications (fs-TAT: 2.2% vs. COT: 2.6%, P = 0.856), rate of positive lymph nodes (fs-TAT: 32.2% vs. COT: 36.5%, P = 0.377), length of postoperative hospital stay (3 days vs. 3 days, P = 0.305) or total medical costs (26,936 vs. 26,549, P = 0.144). CONCLUSION: Compared to conventional open surgery, fs-TAT offered excellent safety and acceptable short-term oncological outcomes in a selected cohort of patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This retrospective study assessed the incidence rate, risk factors, and clinical course of early enlarging cavitation after percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of primary lung cancer (PLC). METHODS: This study included 557 lesions of 514 patients with PLC who underwent CT-guided percutaneous MWA between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2021. Of these patients, 29 developed early enlarging cavitation and were enrolled in the cavity group, and 173 were randomly enrolled in the control group. Early enlarging cavitation of the lung was defined as the development of a cavity ≥30 mm within 7 days after MWA. RESULTS: Overall, 31 (5.57%, 31/557 tumors) early enlarging cavitations occurred at an average of 5.83 ± 1.55 d after MWA. The risk factors were lesion contact with a large vessel (diameter ≥3 mm), lesion contact with the bronchus (diameter ≥2 mm), and a large ablated parenchymal volume. The cavity group had a higher incidence rate of delayed hydropneumothorax (12.9%) and bronchopleural fistula (9.68%) than the control group, resulting in a longer hospitalization (9.09 ± 5.26 days). Until Dec 31, 2022, 27 cavities disappeared after a mean of 217.88 ± 78.57 d (range, 111-510 d), two persisted, and two were lost to follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Early enlarging cavitation occurred in 5.57% PLC cases that underwent MWA, causing serve complications and longer hospitalization. The risk factors were ablated lesion contact with large vessels and bronchi, as well as a larger ablated parenchymal volume.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of synchronous biopsy and microwave ablation (MWA) for highly suspected malignant lung ground-glass opacities (GGOs) adjacent to the mediastinum (distance ≤10 mm). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety patients with 98 GGOs (diameter range, 6-30 mm), located within 10 mm of the mediastinum, underwent synchronous biopsy and MWA at a single institution from 1 May 2020, to 31 October 2021 and were enrolled in this study. Synchronous biopsy and MWA involving the completion of the biopsy and MWA in a single procedure was performed. Safety, technical success rate, and local progression-free survival (LPFS) were evaluated. The risk factors for local progression were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: The technical success rate was 97.96% (96/98 patients). The LPFS rates at 3, 6, and 12 months were 95.0%, 90.0%, and 82.0%, respectively. The diagnostic rate of biopsy-proven malignancy was 72.45% (n = 71/98). Invasion of lesions into the mediastinum was a risk factor for local progression (p = 0.0077). The 30-day mortality rate was 0. The major complications were pneumothorax (13.27%), ventricular arrhythmias (3.06%), pleural effusion (1.02%), hemoptysis (1.02%), and infection (1.02%). Minor complications included pneumothorax (30.61%), pleural effusion (24.49%), hemoptysis (18.37%), ventricular arrhythmias (11.22%), structural changes in adjacent organs (3.06%), and infection (3.06%). CONCLUSIONS: Synchronous biopsy and MWA was effective for treating GGOs adjacent to the mediastinum without severe complications (Society of Interventional Radiology classification E or F). Invasion of lesions into the mediastinum was identified as a risk factor for local progression.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), preserving an aberrant hepatic artery (AHA) can increase the number of arterial anastomoses and may lead to arterial-related complications. AHA includes accessory hepatic artery and replaced hepatic artery. Herein, the purpose of our research is to evaluate the requirement for accessory anastomosis in OLT. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a total of 95 patients who underwent OLT in our hospital between April 2020 and December 2022. We found seven cases of donor livers with accessory HA. The method of arterial anastomosis and details of the diagnosis and treatment of complications were collated. RESULTS: Among 95 consecutive patients with OLT, complications occurred in two of seven patients-patient 2 had an accessory right hepatic artery, while patient 5 had an accessory left hepatic artery. Patient 2 showed bile leakage leading to rupture and bleeding of the accessory HA anastomosis after OLT, and was treated with interventional coil embolization. In patient 5, hepatic artery thrombosis and accessory HA occlusion were treated with embolization and thrombolysis of the splenic artery and left gastric artery. During the intervention, we also found that the internal hepatic artery and accessory HA had communicating branches. After treatment, both patients remain healthy with no complications such as liver necrosis or liver abscess. CONCLUSION: An AHA can be ligated when assessed as an accessory artery. This can reduce the incidence of arterial complications, contribute to the perioperative management of liver transplantation (LT) patients, and improve the prognosis of LT.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: A previous small-sample study verified that a blunt-tip antenna reduced hemorrhage during microwave ablation. We conducted this large-sample, multicenter, case-control study to further verify the efficacy and safety of microwave ablation with a blunt-tip antenna for ground-glass nodules. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with pulmonary ground-glass nodules were treated with either a sharp-tip (Group A) or blunt-tip antenna (Group B). A total of 147 and 150 patients were retrospectively allocated to Groups A and Group B, respectively. Group A patients underwent 151 procedures, and Group B patients underwent 153 procedures. We assessed the technical success, technique efficacy, and complications. RESULTS: Technical success and overall technique efficacy were achieved in all patients (100%). Major complications of pneumothorax were more commonly observed in Group A than in Group B (19.7% vs. 2.0%, p < 0.001). Minor complications, such as intrapulmonary hemorrhage (2.0% vs. 9.5%, p = 0.005) and hemothorax (0.0% vs. 2.7%, p = 0.049), occurred less frequently in Group B compared to Group A. CONCLUSION: In the treatment of ground-glass nodules, microwave ablation with a blunt-tip antenna had equal efficacy compared to microwave ablation with a sharp-tip antenna but had a decreased number of hemorrhage and hemothorax complications.

RESUMEN

Auxin is a key regulator that virtually controls almost every aspect of plant growth and development throughout its life cycle. As the major components of auxin signaling, auxin response factors (ARFs) play crucial roles in various processes of plant growth and development. In this study, a total of 35 PtrARF genes were identified, and their phylogenetic relationships, chromosomal locations, synteny relationships, exon/intron structures, cis-elements, conserved motifs, and protein characteristics were systemically investigated. We also analyzed the expression patterns of these PtrARF genes and revealed that 16 of them, including PtrARF1, 3, 7, 11, 13-17, 21, 23, 26, 27, 29, 31, and 33, were preferentially expressed in primary stems, while 15 of them, including PtrARF2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 18-20, 22, 24, 25, 28, 32, and 35, participated in different phases of wood formation. In addition, some PtrARF genes, with at least one cis-element related to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or abscisic acid (ABA) response, responded differently to exogenous IAA and ABA treatment, respectively. Three PtrARF proteins, namely PtrARF18, PtrARF23, and PtrARF29, selected from three classes, were characterized, and only PtrARF18 was a transcriptional self-activator localized in the nucleus. Moreover, Y2H and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay demonstrated that PtrARF23 interacted with PtrIAA10 and PtrIAA28 in the nucleus, while PtrARF29 interacted with PtrIAA28 in the nucleus. Our results provided comprehensive information regarding the PtrARF gene family, which will lay some foundation for future research about PtrARF genes in tree development and growth, especially the wood formation, in response to cellular signaling and environmental cues.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we aim to show the results of microwave ablation (MWA) for medically inoperable stage I non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) with long-term follow-up. METHODS: From Feb 2011 to Mar 2016, patients with histologically proven clinical stage I NSCLC were treated with CT-guided MWA and retrospectively analyzed. The primary end point was overall survival (OS). Secondary end points included disease-free survival (DFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and complications. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients with 105 lesions underwent MWA. The mean age was 70.7 years (range: 40-86 years), and the mean diameter of all lesions was 2.40 cm (range: 0.9-4.0 cm). Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological type (77, 73.3%), followed by squamous cell carcinomas (21, 20%) and undefined NSCLC (7, 6.7%). With a median follow-up of 54.8 months, the median DFS was 36.0 months, and 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS rates were 89.5%, 49.4%, and 42.7%, respectively. The median CSS and OS were 89.8 and 64.2 months, respectively. The OS rate was 99% at 1 year, 75.6% at 3 years, and 54.1% at 5 years, while the CSS rates were 99%, 78.9%, and 60.9%, respectively. Patients with stage IB lesions had significant shorter DFS (22.3 months vs. undefined, HR: 11.5, 95%CI: 5.85-22.40) and OS (37.3 vs. 89.8 months, HR: 8.64, 95% CI: 4.49-16.60) than IA disease. CONCLUSION: MWA is a safe, effective, and potentially curative therapy for medically inoperable stage I NSCLC patients. KEY POINTS: • In this multicenter retrospective study which included 105 patients, we found the median overall survival (OS) was 64.2 months. The OS rate was 99% at 1 year, 75.6% at 3 years, and 54.1% at 5 years. • Procedures were technically successful and well tolerated in all patients. Most MWA complications were mild or moderate.

RESUMEN

The plant hormone auxin acts as a signaling molecule to regulate numerous developmental processes throughout all stages of plant growth. Understanding how auxin regulates various physiological and developmental processes has been a hot topic and an intriguing field. Recent studies have unveiled more molecular details into how diverse auxin responses function in every aspect of plant growth and development. In this review, we systematically summarized and classified the molecular mechanisms of diverse auxin responses, and comprehensively elaborated the characteristics and multilevel regulation mechanisms of the canonical transcriptional auxin response. On this basis, we described the characteristics and differences between different auxin responses. We also presented some auxin response genes that have been genetically modified in plant species and how their changes impact various traits of interest. Finally, we summarized some important aspects and unsolved questions of auxin responses that need to be focused on or addressed in future research. This review will help to gain an overall understanding of and some insights into the diverse molecular mechanisms of auxin responses in plant growth and development that are instrumental in harnessing genetic resources in molecular breeding of extant plant species.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Microwave ablation (MWA) is an effective minimally invasive technique for lung tumours. We aim to evaluate its role for pulmonary oligorecurrence after radical surgery of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: From June 2012 to Jan 2020, a total of 103 patients with pulmonary oligorecurrence after previous radical surgical resection of NSCLC were retrospectively analysed. The primary endpoint was postoperative progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints were postoperative overall survival (OS), patterns of failure, complications and predictive factors associated with prognosis. RESULTS: Of the 103 patients identified, 135 pulmonary oligorecurrences developed at a median interval of 34.8 months. In total, 143 sessions of MWA were performed to ablate all the nodules. The median PFS and OS were 15.1 months and 40.6 months, respectively. After MWA, 15 (14.6%) patients had local recurrence as the first event, while intrathoracic oligorecurrence and distant metastases were observed in 45 (43.7%) and 20 (19.4%) patients, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, local recurrence and intrathoracic oligorecurrence were not significant predictors for OS (P = 0.23 and 0.26, respectively). However, distant metastasis was predictive of OS (HR = 5.37, 95% CI, 1.04-27.84, P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: MWA should be considered to be an effective and safe treatment option for selected patients with pulmonary oligorecurrence after NSCLC radical surgical resection.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Microwave ablation combined with concurrent biopsy has been used for lung cancer. Frozen section (FS) diagnosis is an important supplement for the final pathology (FP). Thus, a retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the concordance between FS examination and FP in the computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent percutaneous transthoracic needle lung biopsies and were diagnosed using both intraoperative FS examination and FP were retrospectively enrolled. Concordance between FS findings and FP in the diagnosis of malignant lung cancer and the definitive histology types were recorded. RESULTS: Overall, 163 patients were enrolled. The concordance rate in the diagnosis of malignant tumors was 96.3%. The definitive histology types were concordant between FS examinations and FP in 112 patients (68.7%). Lung cancers undefined with FS but diagnosed as adenocarcinoma with FP were the most common type, observed in 18 patients. The concordance in the histology type was lower for those requiring immunohistochemistry for FP diagnoses (47.3 vs. 79.6%, p < 0.000). Concordance rates differed for the different histology types diagnosed using FP (adenocarcinoma vs. squamous cell carcinoma vs. small-cell lung cancer vs. others, 76.6 vs. 56.2 vs. 69.2 vs. 0.0%, p < 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: FS was inferior to FP in the diagnosis of definitive histology types, but had a high concordance with FP in the diagnosis of malignant lung cancer.

RESUMEN

During the COVID-19 pandemic, exposure to particles exhaled by infected passengers in commercial aircraft cabins has been a great concern. Currently, aircraft cabins adopt mixing ventilation. However, complete mixing may not be achieved, and thus the particle concentration in the respiratory zone may vary from seat to seat in a cabin. To evaluate the particle exposure in a typical single-aisle aircraft cabin, this investigation constructed an aircraft cabin mockup for experimental tests. Particles were released from a single source or dual sources at different seats to represent particles exhaled by infected passengers. The particle concentrations in the respiratory zones at various seats were measured and compared. The particle exposure was evaluated in both a cross section and a longitudinal section. Leaving the middle seat vacant to reduce particle exposure was also addressed. In addition, the velocity fields and air temperatures were measured to provide a better understanding of particle transport. It was found that the particle exposure at the window seat is always the lowest, regardless of the particle release locations. If the passenger seated in the middle does not release particles, his/her presence enhances the particle dispersion and thereby reduces the particle exposure for adjacent passengers. In the cabin mockup, the released particles can be transported across at least four rows of seats in the longitudinal direction.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of microwave ablation (MWA) and MWA plus monochemotherapy in elderly patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with advanced NSCLC aged ≥70 years were retrospectively enrolled. MWA was performed at the primary tumor site. The end points included progression-free survival (PFS), response to MWA and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Fifty-four patients were enrolled; of these, 36 received monochemotherapy. Complete ablation was achieved in 42 patients (77.8%). The median PFS and OS were 4.9 months and 21.8 months, respectively. Univariate analyses showed that female patients had superior PFS (31.9 months [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8-63.0]) vs. 5.0 months in male patients (95% CI: 2.0-8.0), p = .002). Female sex was associated with better OS (not reached vs. 10.8 months, 95% CI: 9.3-12.3, p = .003). Moreover, patients with primary tumor size <3.5 cm had better OS than those with tumor size ≥3.5 cm (not reached vs. 10.9 months, 95% CI: 8.2-13.6, p = .006). Multivariate analyses showed that no characteristics were independent prognostic factors of PFS, but sex and primary tumor size were independent prognostic factors of OS. CONCLUSION: MWA was effective in the treatment of elderly patients with advanced NSCLC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: As an important epigenetic mark, 5-methylcytosine (5mC) methylation is involved in many DNA-dependent biological processes and plays a role during development and differentiation of multicellular organisms. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the dynamic aspects and the roles of global 5mC methylation in wood formation in tree trunks. In this study, we not only scrutinized single-base resolution methylomes of primary stems (PS), transitional stems (TS), and secondary stems (SS) of Populus trichocarpa using a high-throughput bisulfite sequencing technique, but also analyzed the effects of 5mC methylation on the expression of genes involved in wood formation. RESULTS: The overall average percentages of CG, CHG, and CHH methylation in poplar stems were ~ 53.6%, ~ 37.7%, and ~ 8.5%, respectively, and the differences of 5mC in genome-wide CG/CHG/CHH contexts among PS, TS, and SS were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The evident differences in CG, CHG, and CHH methylation contexts among 2 kb proximal promoters, gene bodies, and 2 kb downstream regions were observed among PS, TS, and SS. Further analysis revealed a perceptible global correlation between 5mC methylation levels of gene bodies and transcript levels but failed to reveal a correlation between 5mC methylation levels of proximal promoter regions and transcript levels. We identified 653 and 858 DMGs and 4978 and 4780 DEGs in PS vs TS and TS vs SS comparisons, respectively. Only 113 genes of 653 DMGs and 4978 DEGs, and 114 genes of 858 DMGs and 4780 DEG were common. Counterparts of some of these common genes in other species, including Arabidopsis thaliana, are known to be involved in secondary cell wall biosynthesis and hormone signaling. This indicates that methylation may directly modulate wood formation genes and indirectly attune hormone signaling genes, which in turn impact wood formation. CONCLUSIONS: DNA methylation only marginally affects pathway genes or regulators involved in wood formation, suggesting that further studies of wood formation should lean towards the indirect effects of methylation. The information and data we provide here will be instrumental for understanding the roles of methylation in wood formation in tree species.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world. Siah E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1 (Siah1) has been identified as a tumor suppressor gene and plays an important role in the development of malignant tumors. However, the potential role and molecular mechanism of Siah1 in the development and progression of CRC is still unclear. METHODS: To explore the role and molecular mechanism of Siah1 in the development and progression of CRC, we examined the expression of Siah1 in CRC tissue samples and analyzed its association with progression and prognosis in CRC. In addition, overexpression and knockdown of Siah1 was used to investigate its activity in CRC cells. We also use bioinformatics to analyze and verify the significant roles of Siah1 in critical signaling pathways of CRC. RESULTS: We found that the expression of Siah1 was significantly downregulated in CRC tissues, and low expression of Siah1 was associated with aggressive TNM staging and poor survival of CRC patients. Moreover, we revealed that overexpression of Siah1 in CRC cells markedly inhibited CRC cell proliferation and invasion in vitro and in vivo, while knockdown of Siah1 enhanced CRC cell proliferation and invasion. Furthermore, we found that Siah1 prohibited cell proliferation and invasion in CRC partially through promoting AKT (the serine-threonine protein kinase) and YAP (yes associated protein) ubiquitylation and proteasome degradation to regulate the activity of MAPK(mitogen-activated protein kinase 1), PI3K-AKT (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-the serine-threonine protein kinase) and Hippo signaling pathways. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that Siah1 is a novel potential prognostic biomarker and plays a tumor suppressor role in the development and progression of CRC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This prospective trial was performed to verify whether microwave ablation (MWA) in combination with chemotherapy could provide superior survival benefit compared with chemotherapy alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 1, 2015, to June 20, 2017, treatment-naïve patients with pathologically verified advanced or recurrent non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were randomly assigned to MWA plus chemotherapy group or chemotherapy group. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), while the secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), time to local progression (TTLP), and objective response rate (ORR). The complications and adverse events were also reported. RESULTS: A total of 293 patients were randomly assigned into the two groups. One hundred forty-eight patients with 117 stage IV tumors were included in the MWA plus chemotherapy group. One hundred forty-five patients with 113 stage IV tumors were included in the chemotherapy group. The median follow-up period was 13.1 months and 12.4 months, respectively. Median PFS was 10.3 months (95% CI 8.0-13.0) in the MWA plus chemotherapy group and 4.9 months (95% CI 4.2-5.7) in the chemotherapy group (HR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.28-0.53; p < 0.0001). Median OS was not reached in the MWA plus chemotherapy group and 12.6 months (95% CI 10.6-14.6) in the chemotherapy group (HR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.27-0.53; p < 0.0001) using Kaplan-Meier analyses with log-rank test. The median TTLP was 24.5 months, and the ORR was 32% in both groups. The adverse event rate was not significantly different in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with advanced NSCLC, longer PFS and OS can be achieved with the treatment of combined MWA and chemotherapy than chemotherapy alone. KEY POINTS: • Patients treated with MWA plus chemotherapy had superior PFS and OS over those treated with chemotherapy alone. • The ORR of patients treated with MWA plus chemotherapy was similar to that of those treated with chemotherapy alone. • Complications associated with MWA were common but tolerable and manageable.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The present study retrospectively evaluated the feasibility, safety, and short-term efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) to treat multiple synchronous ground-glass opacities (GGOs) of the lung.Materials and Methods: From October 2016 to May 2019, 33 patients (9 males and 24 females, mean age: 59.6 ± 10.0 years) with multiple GGOs (103 GGOs with mean size 12.3 ± 6.3 mm) were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent 66 procedures of CT-guided percutaneous MWA. The feasibility, safety, local progression-free survival, and overall survival were evaluated. Results: The technical success and technique efficacy rate were 100% and no MWA procedure-related deaths were reported. The median follow-up period was 18.1 (range: 6.8-37.7) months. Major complications included pneumothorax (11/66, 16.7%), pleural effusion (2/66, 3.0%), pneumonia (3/66, 4.5%), and nerve injury (1/66, 1.5%), which were well controlled by appropriate treatment. Minor complications included pneumothorax (38/66, 57.6%), pleural effusion (43/66, 65.2%), hemoptysis (13/66, 19.7%), subcutaneous emphysema (4/66, 6.1%), and hemothorax (2/66, 3.0%). Currently, all patients are alive without local progression or tumor recurrence, despite the relatively insufficient follow-up time. Conclusion: CT-guided percutaneous MWA for the treatment of multiple synchronous lung GGOs is feasible, safe, and efficacious over short-term follow-up. It may also be employed as an alternative approach for nonsurgical candidates. A longer follow-up is warranted to evaluate the oncologic outcomes.

RESUMEN

TiO2 crystals are widely used in photocatalytic processes due to their low cost and fabulous catalytic performance. As described in our previous study, three types of TiO2 with the main surfaces of {101}, {001} and {100} were synthesized. In this study, the three types of TiO2 are used to investigate roxithromycin (ROX) photocatalytic degradation kinetics and the pH effect. For photocatalytic degradation, the obtained data have shown that the overall order of optimal degradation is shown as {101} > {001} > {100}. The photooxidation kinetics for {101} facet conforms to first-order kinetics at from pH 5 to pH 10, and most of the photooxidation kinetics for {001} and {100} facets are fitted well with the zero-order and second-order kinetics, respectively. The pH effects are varied to the three types of TiO2, of which {101} has the best degradation effect at pH values 4, 7 and 8, while {001} works best at pH 5 or pH 6, and {100} has a relatively obvious effect at pH 4 and pH 9. The relation between adsorption and oxidation has been tested and proved that the strong adsorption corresponds to the fast oxidation.

RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: Two homologs PsnSuSy1 and PsnSuSy2 from poplar played largely similar but little distinct roles in modulating sink strength, accelerating vegetative growth and modifying secondary growth of plant. Co-overexpression of them together resulted in small but perceptible additive effects. Sucrose synthase (SuSy) acts as a crucial determinant of sink strength by controlling the conversion of sucrose into UDP-glucose, which is not only the sole precursor for cellulose biosynthesis but also an extracellular signaling molecule for plants growth. Therefore, modification of SuSy activity in plants is of utmost importance. We have isolated two SuSy genes from poplar, PsnSuSy1 and PsnSuSy2, which were preferentially expressed in secondary xylem/phloem. To investigate their functions, T2 tobacco transgenic lines of PsnSuSy1 and PsnSuSy2 were generated and then crossed to generate PsnSuSy1/PsnSuSy2 dual overexpression transgenic lines. SuSy activities in all lines were significantly increased though PsnSuSy1/PsnSuSy2 lines only exhibited slightly higher SuSy activities than either PsnSuSy1 or PsnSuSy2 lines. The significantly increased fructose and glucose, engendered by augmented SuSy activities, caused the alternations of many physiological, biochemical measures and phenotypic traits that include accelerated vegetative growth, thickened secondary cell wall, and increased stem breaking force, accompanied with altered expression levels of related pathway genes. The correlation relationships between SuSy activities and many of these traits were statistically significant. However, differences of almost all traits among three types of transgenic lines were insignificant. These findings clearly demonstrated that PsnSuSy1 and PsnSuSy2 had similar but little distinct functions and insubstantial additive effects on modulating sink strength and affecting allocation of carbon elements among secondary cell wall components.
