RESUMEN

An expanded family of ruthenium-based metathesis catalysts bearing cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ligands was prepared. These catalysts exhibited exceptional activity in the ethenolysis of the seed-oil derivative methyl oleate. In many cases, catalyst turnover numbers (TONs) of more than 100,000 were achieved, at a catalyst loading of only 3 ppm. Remarkably, the most active catalyst system was able to achieve a TON of 340,000, at a catalyst loading of only 1 ppm. This is the first time a series of metathesis catalysts has exhibited such high performance in cross-metathesis reactions employing ethylene gas, with activities sufficient to render ethenolysis applicable to the industrial-scale production of linear α-olefins (LAOs) and other terminal-olefin products.

RESUMEN

Two (cAAC)2Cu complexes, featuring a two-coordinate copper atom in the formal oxidation state zero, were prepared by reducing (Et2-cAAC)2Cu(+)I(-) with metallic sodium in THF, and by a one-pot synthesis using Me2-cAAC, Cu(II)Cl2, and KC8 in toluene in a molar ratio of 2:1:2, respectively. Both complexes are highly air and moisture sensitive but can be stored in the solid state for a month at room temperature. DFT calculations showed that in these complexes the copper center has a d(10) electronic configuration and the unpaired electron is delocalized over two carbene carbon atoms. This was further confirmed by the EPR spectra, which exhibit multiple hyperfine lines due to the coupling of the unpaired electron with (63,65)Cu isotopes, (14)N, and (1)H nuclei.

RESUMEN

The synthesis of air- and moisture-stable trinuclear mixed-valence gold(I)/gold(0) clusters is described. They promote the catalytic carbonylation of amines under relatively mild conditions. The synthetic route leading to the trinuclear clusters involves a simple ligand exchange from the readily available µ(3)-oxo-[(Ph3 PAu)3O](+) complex. This synthetic method paves the way for the preparation of a variety of mixed-valence gold(I)/gold(0) polynuclear clusters. Moreover, the well-defined nature of the complexes demonstrates that the catalytic process involves a rare example of a definite change of oxidation state of gold from Au(0)2Au(I) to Au(I)3.

BACKGROUND: Reactive arthritis and septic arthritis rarely present concomitantly in the same joint and patient. Reactive arthritis presenting after coronavirus disease 2019 is also exceedingly rare, with less than 30 cases reported thus far. Less common pathogens such as Clostridium difficile have been reported to cause reactive arthritis, especially in patients with a positive human leukocyte antigen B27, and therefore should be considered in diagnostic algorithms. The aim of this case report is to highlight the difficulties and precautions in discerning and diagnosing patients presenting with sudden swelling of the knee. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old Caucasian male with a recent history of coronavirus disease 2019 upper respiratory infection and diarrhea and negating trauma, who presented with a swollen and painful knee. Pain and swelling worsened and inflammatory parameters increased after an intraarticular corticosteroid injection. The patient was therefore treated with arthroscopic lavage and intravenous antibiotics for suspected septic arthritis. Synovial fluid and synovium samples were taken and sent for microbiological analysis. Synovial fluid cytology showed increased leukocytes at 10,980 × 106/L, while polymerase chain reaction and cultures came back sterile. Clostridium difficile toxin was later detected from a stool sample and the patient was treated with oral vancomycin. The patient was tested for the presence of human leukocyte antigen B27, which was positive. We present a review of the literature about the challenges of distinguishing septic from reactive arthritis, and about the mechanisms that predispose certain patients to this rheumatological disease. CONCLUSIONS: It is still a challenge to differentiate between septic and reactive arthritis of the knee, and it is even more challenging to identify the exact cause of reactive arthritis. This case report of a human leukocyte antigen-B27-positive patient highlights the necessity of contemplating different, less common causes of a swollen knee joint as a differential diagnosis of an apparent septic infection, especially in the coronavirus disease 2019 era. Treating the patient for septic arthritis prevented any possible complications of such a condition, while treating the C. difficile infection contributed to the substantial relief of symptoms.

Outside the cage: A change in the redox properties of a triazole fused to a carborane anion through methylation to form a zwitterion enabled facile chemical reduction of the compound to an isolable triazole radical anion (see structure: C gray, H white, N blue, B brown, Cl green). The radical anion is stabilized by kinetic protection by the chlorinated carborane and the delocalization of spin density throughout the exo-cluster π system.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is a genetic disorder of the cholesterol metabolic pathway, most often associated with variants in the CYP27A1 gene. The dysregulation of cholesterol metabolism results in the accumulation of metabolites such as cholestanol, which has a predilection for neuronal tissue and tendons. The condition is treatable with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), which halts the production of these metabolites. We present two adult brothers, without diagnosis, suffering from ataxia, general muscle weakness and cognitive deficits. Both brothers suffered from early onset cataracts, watery stools and thoracic kyphoscoliosis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintense alterations in the central nervous system and intratendinous xanthomas in the Achilles tendons. A biochemical analysis showed elevated levels of cholestanol, lathosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol. Their family history was negative for neurological and metabolic disorders. Genetic testing revealed a pathogenic CYP27A1 variant (c.1184+1G>A) in both brothers, confirming the diagnosis. The patients were started on CDCA therapy and have shown significant improvement at their follow-up examinations. Early diagnosis and treatment initiation in CTX patients is of great importance, as the significant reversal of disease progression can be achieved. For this reason, clinical genetic testing is necessary when it comes to patients with an onset of cataracts, chronic diarrhea, and neurological symptoms in early childhood.

Recent studies have highlighted the underestimated importance of the cellular immune response after the emergence of variants of concern (VOCs) of SARS-CoV-2, and the significantly reduced neutralizing power of antibody titers in individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination. Our study included 303 participants who were tested at St. Catherine Specialty Hospital using the Quan-T-Cell SARS-CoV-2 in combination with the Quan-T-Cell ELISA (Euroimmun Medizinische Labordiagnostika, Lübeck, Germany) for the analysis of IFN-γ concentration, and with Anti-SARS-CoV-2 QuantiVac ELISA IgG (Euroimmun Medizinische Labordiagnostika, Lübeck, Germany) for the detection of human antibodies of the immunoglobulin class IgG against the S1 domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The statistical analysis showed a significant difference in the concentration of IFN-γ between reinfected participants and those without infection (p = 0.012). Participants who were not infected or reinfected with SARS-CoV-2 after vaccination and/or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection had a significantly higher level of cellular immunity. Furthermore, in individuals without additional vaccination, those who experienced infection/reinfection had significantly lower levels of IFN-γ compared to uninfected participants (p = 0.016). Our findings suggest a long-lasting effect of cellular immunity, measured by IFN-γ concentrations, which plays a key role in preventing infections and reinfections after the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern.

Rare-earth coordination polymers or lanthanide-organic frameworks with hitherto unreported crystal structures have been obtained on the basis of the "light" lanthanides Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu in combination with terephthalic acid and using a slightly altered literature synthesis procedure. Rietveld refinement has shown that powder XRD patterns of such compounds are largely dominated by the positions of the heavy elements, pointing to isostructural networks for all four terephthalate-based materials. An in-depth luminescence study has been performed on the reported MOFs, showing rare praseodymium and samarium emission in the visible spectrum, aside from the strong europium luminescence and the near-infrared emission from both a terephthalate and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate based neodymium-MOF.

The concept of an active dosimetry system for pulsed radiation dose rate measurements is presented. Real-time distinction of pulsed and non-pulsed radiation contributions is based on the time structure of a single interaction. A fast tissue equivalent plastic scintillator is exploited to minimize the pile-up effect influence on absorbed energy measurements. Being connected to a fully digital signal processing board, the detector creates an active dosimetry system with adjustable parameters. With this system, absorbed dose rate measurements were carried out in a photon field with a time structure mimicking a radiotherapeutic beam, but also in the presence of a constant radiation field. Measurements show a linear dependence of a pulsed radiation contribution on the accelerator current in the investigated range of the total dose rate up to 8 µGy h-1. While increasing the accelerator current by 1 µA, the pulsed radiation dose rate grows by (26.2 ± 0.9) nGy h-1 when considering pile-up events.

Marty Echt, the new head of marketing at Hunsk Engines, is determined to bring the motorcycle maker back to its roots. He says it's not enough to project authenticity to customers--employees must personally subscribe to the brand's values. Should the company's CEO support Marty's "real deal" vision? Five experts comment on this fictional case study. Bruce Weindruch, the founder and CEO of the History Factory, says that an authenticity-based campaign can be effective--but only if it's truly drawn from history. Marketers like Marty often remember their organization's past in a golden haze. Weindruch recommends exploring old engineering drawings, ads, and product photos in order to understand what customers and employees really valued back in the day. Gillian Arnold, a consultant to luxury fashion and fine jewelry brands, thinks Marty's approach is right: People in key marketing posts must be passionate about their products and know them inside and out. She argues that the CEO needs to commit more fully to the new campaign and address the significant gap between the staff and the brand. James H. Gilmore and B. Joseph Pine II, the cofounders of Strategic Horizons, point out that Hunsk needs to manage customers' perceptions rather than trying to be a "real company" or forming a management team whose personal interests match the brand. People purchase a product if it conforms to their self-image; that alone determines the brand's authenticity. Glenn Brackett of Sweetgrass Rods, a maker of bamboo fly-fishing rods, says Marty seems to be one of the few people who understand Hunsk motorcycles. If employees bring blood, sweat, heart, and soul to a product, it will manifest that spirit, and customers will line up for it.
