RESUMEN

The coffee ring effect regularly occurs during the evaporation of colloidal droplets and is often undesirable. Here we show that adding a specific concentration of a surfactant can mitigate this effect. We have conducted experiments on aqueous suspensions of carbon nanotubes that were prepared with cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide added at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 times the critical micelle concentration. Colloidal droplets were deposited on candidate substrates for printed electronics with varying wetting characteristics: glass, polyethylene terephthalate, fluoroethylene propylene copolymer, and polydimethylsiloxane. Following drying, four pattern types were observed in the final deposits: dot-like, uniform, coffee ring deposits, and combined patterns (coffee ring with a dot-like central deposit). Evaporation occurred predominantly in constant contact radius mode for most pattern types, except for some cases that led to uniform deposits in which early stage receding of the contact line occurred. Image analysis and profilometry yielded deposit thicknesses, allowing us to identify a coffee ring subfeature in all uniform deposits and to infer the percentage coverage in all cases. Importantly, a critical surfactant concentration was identified for the generation of highly uniform deposits across all substrates. This concentration resulted in visually uniform deposits consisting of a coffee ring subfeature with a densely packed center, generated from two distinct evaporative phases.

RESUMEN

A cheap and reliable process for the modified Wenker cyclization to afford aziridines has been achieved using biphasic conditions for a range of amino alcohol starting materials. A 100 mmol "one-pot" process has also been devised, and the enantiopurity of the starting amino alcohol is retained in the aziridine product.

RESUMEN

Electronic waste produced by plastic, toxic, and semiconducting components of existing electronic devices is dramatically increasing environmental pollution. To overcome these issues, the use of eco-friendly materials for designing such devices is attaining much attention. This current work presents a recycled material-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) made of plastic waste and carbon-coated paper wipes (C@PWs), in which the PWs are also collected from a waste bin. The resultant C@PW-based TENG is then used for powering low-power electronic devices and, later, to generate a Morse code from a wearable for autonomous communication. In this application, the end users decode the Morse code from a customized LabVIEW program and read the transmitted signal. With further redesigning, a 9-segment keyboard is developed using nine-TENGs, connected to an Arduino controller to display the 9-segment actuation on a computer screen. Based on the above analysis, our C@PW-TENG device is expected to have an impact on future self-powered sensors and internet of things systems.

III-nitride materials have been linked with a vast number of exciting applications from power electronics to solar cells. Herein, polycrystalline InN, GaN and systematically controlled InxGa1-xN composite thin films are fabricated on FTO glass by a facile, low-cost and scalable aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition technique. Variation of the indium content in the composite films leads to a dramatic shift in the optical absorbance properties, which correlates with the band edges shifting between those of GaN to InN. Moreover, the photoelectrochemical properties are shown to vary with indium content, with the 50% indium composite having an external quantum efficiency of around 8%. Whilst the overall photocurrent is found to be low, the photocurrent stability is shown to be excellent, with little degradation seen over 1 hour. These findings demonstrate a new and low-cost method for fabricating polycrystalline III-nitrides, which have a range of interesting properties that are highly sought after for many applications.

A simple, catalyst-free growth method for vertically aligned, highly crystalline iron oxide (α-Fe(2)O(3)) wires and needles is reported. Wires are grown by the thermal oxidation of iron foils. Growth properties are studied as a function of temperature, growth time and oxygen partial pressure. The size, morphology and density of the nanostructures can be controlled by varying growth temperature and time. Oxygen partial pressure shows no effect on the morphology of resulting nanostructures, although the oxide thickness increases with oxygen partial pressure. Additionally, by using sputtered iron films, the possibility of growth and patterning on a range of different substrates is demonstrated. Growth conditions can be adapted to less tolerant substrates by using lower temperatures and longer growth time. The results provide some insight into the mechanism of growth.
