RESUMEN

Students are self-motivated to learn when provided opportunities that connect theory and real-world applications. Here, we describe for biochemistry majors a newborn screening-focused outreach activity that seeks to develop students' mastery of disciplinary content and soft skills (e.g., critical thinking, teamwork, effective communication, community engagement) and to enhance student engagement.

While studies have examined the effects of schools offering in-person learning during the pandemic, this study provides analysis of student enrollment decisions (remote versus in-person) in response to schools providing in-person learning opportunities. In Connecticut during the 2020-21 school year, we find that student take-up of in-person learning opportunities was low with students on average enrolled in-person for only half of the days offered, and take-up was even lower in schools with larger shares of disadvantaged students. The provision of in-person learning opportunities has been previously shown to mitigate pandemic learning losses. By exploiting data on actual enrollment, we show that the protective benefits of in-person learning are twice as large as previously estimated once we account for the low rates of student take-up. Finally, we provide evidence suggesting that a key mechanism behind the benefits of in-person learning is alleviating the burden faced by schools and teachers in delivering remote education. First, we show that the benefits to individual students of their in-person learning are substantially smaller than the overall benefits a student receives from their school average level of in-person enrollment. Second, we show that a combination of remote and in-person learning (hybrid) with a full-time on-line presence of students when at home was worse than hybrid learning with students never or only partially online. This second finding is consistent with qualitative evidence showing that teachers found hybrid learning especially challenging when having to manage both in-person and remote students for the entire class period.

Bettridge et al. suggest scientist's reluctance to engage the public on controversial ethical issues may be a contributing factor. The authors propose a Scientist's Oath to send a clear message to the public about our ideals.

Design-based STEM learning is believed to be an effective cross-disciplinary strategy for promoting children's cognitive development. Yet, its impact on executive functions, particularly for disadvantaged children, still need to be explored. This study investigated the effects of short-term intensive design-based STEM learning on executive function among left-behind children. Sixty-one Grade 4 students from a school dedicated to the left-behind children in China were sampled and randomly assigned to an experimental group (10.70 ± 0.47 years old, n = 30) or a control group (10.77 ± 0.43 years old, n = 31). The experimental group underwent a two-week design-based STEM training program, while the control group participated in a 2-week STEM-related reading program. Both groups were assessed with the brain activation from 4 brain regions of interest using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioral measures during a Stroop task before and after the training. Analysis disclosed: (i) a significant within-group time effect in the experimental group, with posttest brain activation in Brodmann Area 10 and 46 being notably lower during neutral and word conditions; (ii) a significant between-group difference at posttest, with the experimental group showing considerably lower brain activation in Brodmann Area 10 and Brodmann Area 46 than the control group; and (iii) a significant task effect in brain activity among the three conditions of the Stroop task. These findings indicated that this STEM learning effectively enhanced executive function in left-behind children. The discrepancy between the non-significant differences in behavioral performance and the significant ones in brain activation implies a compensatory mechanism in brain activation. This study enriches current theories about the impact of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning on children's executive function development, providing biological evidence and valuable insights for educational curriculum design and assessment.

BACKGROUND: Reports of mistreatment are an important first step to improving medical students' learning environment. Students may not report mistreatment due to a lack of awareness of institutional policies, reporting procedures, or for fear of reprisal. AIM: We sought to determine if a medical school cross-platform mobile application (app) could be used to improve students' awareness of mistreatment policies and procedures. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Participants in this intervention included Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) medical students, faculty, and Student Affairs Deans. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We created the DUCOMpass© app to make mistreatment policies and procedures more readily available and to ease mistreatment reporting for medical students. PROGRAM EVALUATION: To determine the efficacy of the app at raising mistreatment awareness, we analyzed our institutional Graduation Questionnaire data before and after the introduction of the app (from 2016 to 2023) as compared with the national average. We verified our students' self-reported data with app usage data. DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, this is the first instance of a medical school mobile app being implemented to successfully address medical student mistreatment awareness and reporting. We found that reaching students in a familiar and easily accessible mode(s) of communication is a catalyst for lasting change. NIH TRIAL REGISTRY: Not applicable.

BACKGROUND: International student exchanges are a significant part of medical education, and experiences of North American and European medical students abroad have been extensively examined. By contrast, knowledge of visiting medical students in the United States (US) is limited largely to surveys of administrators and course directors. OBJECTIVE: To understand US attending physicians' thoughts on visiting international student clinical externships. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Three clinician-educator physician focus groups were conducted across two US medical schools with broad representation of training backgrounds, clinical disciplines, and career stages. Focus groups and constant comparison analysis of transcripts were performed iteratively to identify emerging themes. MAIN MEASURES: Qualitative themes and subthemes. KEY RESULTS: Two main themes emerged from the data: (1) administrative requirements for success: hosting international students requires careful planning and coordination, which is daunting amidst demanding faculty responsibilities. Externships must address experiences of the people directly involved in the clinical setting, leadership, communication, and institutional, financial, physical, and personnel resources. (2) Impact of student qualities: When working with international students, the importance of administrative details and student characteristics increases due to higher student variability overall, inconsistent language and cultural fluency, and the consequent recognition of the student as an ambassador for their home institution and country. CONCLUSIONS: Amidst already busy schedules, clinician educators identify the hosting of international medical students as a commitment resembling that for their own trainees. Linguistic and cultural distances, and the overall variability of international students amplify the importance of effective administration. The findings have influenced related processes at the University of Pittsburgh.

BACKGROUND: Institutions rely on student evaluations of teaching (SET) to ascertain teaching quality. Manual review of narrative comments can identify faculty with teaching concerns but can be resource and time-intensive. AIM: To determine if natural language processing (NLP) of SET comments completed by learners on clinical rotations can identify teaching quality concerns. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Single institution retrospective cohort analysis of SET (n = 11,850) from clinical rotations between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The performance of three NLP dictionaries created by the research team was compared to an off-the-shelf Sentiment Dictionary. PROGRAM EVALUATION: The Expert Dictionary had an accuracy of 0.90, a precision of 0.62, and a recall of 0.50. The Qualifier Dictionary had lower accuracy (0.65) and precision (0.16) but similar recall (0.67). The Text Mining Dictionary had an accuracy of 0.78 and a recall of 0.24. The Sentiment plus Qualifier Dictionary had good accuracy (0.86) and recall (0.77) with a precision of 0.37. DISCUSSION: NLP methods can identify teaching quality concerns with good accuracy and reasonable recall, but relatively low precision. An existing, free, NLP sentiment analysis dictionary can perform nearly as well as dictionaries requiring expert coding or manual creation.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant brain tumor with rapid angiogenesis. How to inhibit GBM angiogenesis is a key problem to be solved. To explore the targets of inhibiting GBM angiogenesis, this study confirmed that the expression of circMTA1 (hsa_circ_0033614) was significantly upregulated in human brain microvascular endothelial cells exposed to glioma cell-conditioned medium (GECs). The expression of circMTA1 in the cytoplasm was significantly higher than that in the nucleus. Upregulated circMTA1 in GECs can promote cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation. Further exploration of the circularization mechanism of circMTA1 confirmed that KHDRBS1 protein can bind to the upstream and downstream flanking sequences of circMTA1 and promote circMTA1 biogenesis by coordinating Alu element pairing. KHDRBS1 upregulated the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of GECs by promoting the biogenesis of circMTA1. CircMTA1 can encode the protein MTA1-134aa by internal ribosome entry site sequence-mediated translation mechanism, and promote the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of GECs through the encoded MTA1-134aa. This study provides a new target for inhibiting angiogenesis in brain GBM and a new strategy for improving the therapeutic efficacy of GBM.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rapidly changing landscape of residency applications, many medical students struggle to identify guidance from faculty advisors. Additionally, faculty advisors may find it difficult to maintain up-to-date knowledge on changes such as the new supplemental application. These gaps could potentially lead to inequitable advising. The objective of this study was to identify both students' and faculty's perceived barriers and expectations for residency application advising. METHODS: Anonymous surveys were administered to both fourth-year medical students and faculty advisors at a single institution within 2 mo of the residency application deadline. Survey questions assessed student and faculty barriers to establishing the advisor-advisee relationships, as well as expectations of the advisor role. Surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: We identified that the majority of students (57%) did not have a faculty advisor within weeks of the application deadline, and an equal amount felt that finding an advisor was either somewhat difficult or extremely difficult. Of all the students, 60% felt their biggest barrier was not knowing how to find an advisor. Though faculty felt equipped to advise students, 75% of faculty in the participating specialties had advising concerns regarding the supplemental application or were unaware of the changes. CONCLUSIONS: We identified gaps in the residency application advising process from both student and faculty perspectives. Future work involves increasing awareness of the resources and opportunities available to students to improve advising relationships. Standardized training tools and resources for faculty will result in more consistent and reliable faculty advising.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical clerkship is a formative experience in the medical school curriculum and can leave a lasting impression on students' perception of surgery. Given the historical negative stereotypes of surgeons, the clerkship represents an opportunity to impact students in a meaningful way. METHODS: Our institution developed a program in which research residents can serve as junior clerkship coordinators and educators; working closely with medical students on their surgery clerkship. At the end of their clerkship, students were administered a survey with Likert-scale and free text responses regarding satisfaction with the rotation, lectures, feedback, and value of the clerkship. Student survey results were compared before (2015-2016) and after (2017-2019) the implementation of the scholar program with nonparametric statistical analysis and qualitative text analysis. RESULTS: A total of 413 students responded to the survey with no significant difference in response rate by term (P = 0.88). We found no statistical difference with respect to overall course perception (92.3% versus 91.2%, P = 0.84), but a statistically significant difference was noted for the clarity of the provided written clerkship materials (80.3% versus 91.3%, P = 0.02) and usefulness of the feedback (57.5% versus 78.7%, P = 0.01). Qualitative analysis demonstrated an overall positive shift in perception of the clerkship, improvement in the course materials, and organization. CONCLUSIONS: The scholar program was overall well received by the students with improvements in certain aspects of the clerkship: organization, feedback, and course materials. This program represents a potential strategy to improve certain portions of the medical school clerkship experience.

BACKGROUND: The surgery clerkship has a powerful impact on medical students' attitudes toward surgery. The primary aim of this study was to identify factors that influence current medical student experiences during the surgery clerkship and discern if they have shifted following the COVID pandemic and with a new generation of "Zillennial" students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a qualitative content analysis of medical student surgery clerkship evaluations from 2018 to 2022 at three clinical training sites of our medical school (n = 596). The codes and themes that emerged from the data were then compared between the pre-COVID cohort (pre-March 2020) and post-COVID (post June 2020) cohorts. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed four themes: clerkship factors, educator qualities, surgical culture, and student expectations. Clerkship factors included the overall clerkship organization, preparatory sessions, and having schedule flexibility. The clinical educators had a significant impact on medical student experience by setting expectations and providing actionable feedback. Surgical culture included the team dynamic and professionalism or diversity issues. Students were expected to have clear guidance for their roles, opportunities to shine, and sought meaningful learning. While the themes were consistent between both cohorts, the frequency of codes varied, with more students commenting on flexibility, neglect, and long work hours in the post-COVID cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Numerous previously unreported factors impact surgical clerkship experiences, revealing a generational shift in medical student attitudes. These results suggest that educators and their institutions must be proactive in tracking student evaluations to adapt their clerkship curriculum for an optimal educational experience and evolving student expectations.

INTRODUCTION: Near-peer instruction has grown in popularity in medical education; however, limited data exist to support its effectiveness. This study investigates the perceptions of near-peer style instruction in third-y medical students undergoing a surgical clinical clerkship. We hypothesized that near-peer instruction would provide a beneficial educational experience to third-y medical students during their surgical clinical clerkship. METHODS: The authors anonymously surveyed third-y medical students undergoing their clinical clerkship in surgery on their perception of the near-peer instruction and mentorship they received from fourth-y medical students at the beginning of the clerkship. Near-peer instruction included teaching suturing techniques, surgical procedures and anatomy, operating room literacy, and sharing anecdotal experiences. Surveys were distributed 24 h after receiving the formal instruction. RESULTS: A total of 85 students completed the survey (78% response rate). Students reported a similar or increase in value of learning from near-peer mentors compared to attending physicians (less valuable: 1.2%; just as valuable: 52.9%; more valuable: 45.9%). The majority of students indicated they would like to experience more near-peer style instruction in medical school as demonstrated in surgical clerkship training (absolutely no: 0%; probably not: 0%; on the fence: 4.7%; probably yes: 25.9%; absolutely yes: 69.4%). After experiencing near-peer instruction and mentoring, students were more interested in becoming near-peer mentors (less interested: 1.2%; just as interested: 29.4%; more interested: 69.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Students appreciate and desire near-peer instruction, seeing it as an effective learning method. Mentees undergoing near-peer style instruction have an increased interest in becoming near-peer mentors.

INTRODUCTION: While prior literature demonstrates gender-based differences in surgical residents' self-assessments, limited data exist examining these effects at the medical student level. This study aimed to understand how self-ratings of clinical performance differ across genders for clerkship students. METHODS: This was a retrospective study examining the results of an institutional Clinical Performance Examination administered at the end of the clerkship year. Students were tasked with obtaining a history and physical examination and developing an assessment and plan based on standardized patient cases. After the examination, students were asked to estimate the percentile rating of their performance. Female and male students' true scores, self-rated percentiles, and differences between true and self-rated percentiles were compared. RESULTS: One hundred twenty three male and 113 female medical students were included in the analysis. Female medical students performed statistically significantly better overall (79.65% versus 78.23%, P = 0.0039), in history skills (76.90% versus 75.19%, P = 0.012), and in communication skills (94.05% versus 92.58%, P = 0.0085). No statistically significant differences were seen between self-rated percentiles between male and female students. However, when comparing the difference between self-rated and true percentile scores (Δ = self-rated - true percentile), male students were more likely to rate themselves higher than their true percentile on history (male students Δ = 12.26 versus female students Δ = -1.24, P = 0.00076) and communication metrics (male students Δ = 14.12 versus female students Δ = 6.05, P = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS: Despite higher performance, female students rate themselves similarly to male medical students, suggesting a pattern of underestimation. Faculty must recognize that gender-based differences in self-evaluations begin at the medical student level, potentially impacting future trainee development.

BACKGROUND: Australia hosts over 680,000 international students, contributing $47.8 billion to the Australian economy in 2023, and Chinese students rank first among all nationalities. However, despite their considerable numbers, research focusing on their access to healthcare services is scant. This study aimed to explore barriers and supports regarding the utilisation of healthcare services among Chinese international students studying in Australia. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in Chinese between October and December 2023 with 25 Chinese international students (age range, 19-30; female/male, n = 18/7; undergraduate/postgraduate/doctoral, n = 1/18/6) enrolled in three Australian universities to understand the healthcare challenges they encountered and the coping strategies they recommended. These interviews were recorded, and thematic analysis was applied to the interview data. An adapted social-ecological model was used to identify barriers and pragmatic strategies to deal with the challenges at different levels. RESULTS: Chinese international students in Australia faced healthcare barriers at different levels. Individual barriers included language and cultural disparities, lack of knowledge about the healthcare system, and reluctance to seek help. Institutional barriers involved high costs, difficulties regarding appointments, and procedures related to the referral system. Policy barriers included insurance coverage and reimbursement issues. The students interviewed for this study proposed individual-level strategies, such as trying various methods to reduce language barriers, seeking information online, and using online resources and consultations. A central appointment platform and multilingual medical service were recommended from students to medical institutions, while medical service guidance and psychological support were suggested to education institutions. Higher-level strategies were also reported, which were mainly pertaining to insurance terms and coverage for overseas students and improving the accessibility of medical information. CONCLUSIONS: Our study identifies barriers to healthcare access for Chinese international students in Australia, including culture-specific challenges. To mitigate these issues, we recommend self-directed health promotion, targeted support by education institutions, enhanced cross-cultural communication and expanded telemedicine by hospitals, and attention to insurance coverage. Future research should explore optimising these approaches to improve support systems and policy frameworks.

Parenting students constitute a significant portion of the college population, with 22% of undergraduate students nationwide managing the dual responsibilities of parenthood and education. Single-parenting students face disproportionate challenges to achieving academic success. This study examines the health, financial, and academic aspects of parenting students attending a large, urban public university, specifically comparing single parents to their married or cohabiting counterparts and non-parenting students in New York City. We collected data from 2104 participants, including 142 single parents and 119 married or cohabiting parents, through a cross-sectional survey. Using adjusted regression models, we evaluated the associations between parenting status and financial, health, and academic factors. Our findings reveal that, in comparison to non-parents, single parents are significantly more likely to carry debt (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.81), rely on food assistance (aOR 5.03), and achieve slightly lower GPAs (ß - 0.11). Single parents also work more hours (aOR 1.66) and have an increased likelihood of facing debt (aOR 2.66), housing difficulties (aOR 2.80), food insecurity (aOR 2.21), and lower GPAs (ß - 0.22) compared to their married or cohabiting peers. The disaggregation of single and married or cohabiting parents reveals significant disparities, emphasizing the vulnerability of single-parenting students in higher education. Targeted interventions addressing issues like food security and housing are essential to support the academic success of single parents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the published literature on the relationship between race and ethnicity and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among students enrolled at institutions of higher education in the United States. RECENT FINDINGS: College students with certain racial and ethnic identities have a higher prevalence of past-year suicidal ideation (Asian, Black or African American, multiracial, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander) and past-year suicide attempts (Asian, Black or African American, multiracial, and Hispanic) than White students. There is a lack of evidence about racial and ethnic differences in suicide deaths. More research is needed to understand factors that contribute to the racial and ethnic disparities in suicidal thoughts and behaviors among college students. Identifying modifiable risk factors that may be specific to college students will ultimately reduce suicide deaths and guide the development of more effective suicide prevention programs across diverse racial and ethnic groups of students.

INTRODUCTION: Efficient asthma management necessitates optimal usage of metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). As future health professionals, pharmacy students are pivotal in disseminating accurate methodologies for MDI usage. Despite having hands-on experience, there is room to enhance their comprehension, highlighting the need for prompt patient educational interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile app-assisted educational method in improving pharmacy students' understanding of MDI usage. METHODS: A pre-experimental study was conducted from March to August 2021 with 45 participants enrolled in the Pharmacist Professional Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Using a one-group pretest-post-test design, the study measured the app's impact on students' knowledge and MDI usage skills. RESULTS: The intervention significantly improved students' scores on a 9-step MDI usage checklist, with increases ranging from 0.10 to 0.50 across verbal and motor components. A Mann-Whitney U test validated these findings, showing a statistically significant p-value of 0.001. CONCLUSION: The mobile app-assisted educational approach substantially enhanced pharmacy students' proficiency in MDI use. The significant rise in mean scores for the 9-step checklist, along with the notable p-value, supports the effectiveness of this intervention in healthcare education.

BACKGROUND: The structures around the navicular bones, which constitute the medial longitudinal arch, develop by 10 years of age. While navicular bone height is often emphasized in the assessment of flatfoot, three-dimensional (3D) evaluations, including those of structural parameters during inversion, have rarely been investigated. If the development of flatfoot during the growth process could be predicted, appropriate interventions could be implemented. Therefore, in this longitudinal cohort study, we developed a system, utilizing smartphones, to measure the 3D structure of the foot, performed a longitudinal analysis of changes in midfoot structures in 124 children aged 9-12 years, and identified factors influencing the height of the navicular bone. The foot skeletal structure was measured using a 3D system. RESULTS: Over 2 years, foot length and instep height increased during development, while navicular height decreased. The 25th percentile of the instep height ratio and navicular height ratio at ages 9-10 years did not exceed those at ages 11-12 years, with percentages of 17.9% and 71.6%, respectively, for boys, and 15.8% and 49.1%, respectively, for girls. As the quartiles of the second toe-heel-navicular angle (SHN angle) increased at ages 9-10 years, the axis of the bone distance (ABD) and SHN angles at ages 11-12 years also increased, resulting in a decrease in the navicular height ratio. A significant inverse correlation was found between changes in SHN angle and navicular height ratio. These findings indicate that the navicular bone rotation of the midfoot is a predictor of the descent of the navicular bone. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that some children exhibit decreases in navicular bone height with growth. As a distinct feature, the inversion of the navicular bone promotes flattening of the midfoot. Thus, this study provides insights into changes in midfoot development in children and provides an effective evaluation index.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phone addiction is on the rise among various populations, particularly among the younger generations. This phenomenon can significantly impact various aspects of life, particularly mental health. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of mobile phone addiction and mental health, as well as the associated factors of mental health among medical students in southeast Iran in 2023. METHODS: Using stratified sampling, 365 students from the Kerman University of Medical Sciences were included from May to June 2023. The data collection tool comprised a questionnaire assessing general health (GHQ-28), mobile phone addiction, and social support. Logistic regression was used to examine the associated factors of mental health. RESULTS: The prevalence of mobile phone addiction and poor mental health among students was 46.6% (95% Confidence Intervals [CI]: 41.4; 51.7) and 52.9% (95% CI: 47.7; 57.9), respectively. The results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that individuals with mobile phone addiction had higher odds of experiencing a poor mental health situation (Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.30, 3.09). Conversely, participants with higher social support scores were less likely to have poor health (aOR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.94, 0.97). CONCLUSION: We found a high prevalence of mobile phone addiction. Considering the association between mobile phone addiction and mental health, it is necessary to prevent the complications and risks caused by mobile phone addiction; it requires educational planning, counseling, and behavior among vulnerable students.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction has an important influence on the development of physical and mental health of college students. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current status and the correlation between college students' negative emotion, fatigue level and Internet addiction disorder, and to provide reference for the care and management of college students. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire survey on a cluster sample of college students from October to November 15, 2022. Internet addiction scale, fatigue assessment scale and positive and negative emotion scale were used for survey. Pearson correlation analysis and mediating effect test were performed to analyze the correlation and effects. RESULTS: A total of 1546 valid questionnaires were collected. The incidence of internet addiction in college student was 20.38%. The total score of internet addiction was 52.94 ± 12.47, the total fatigue score was 69.27 ± 3.19, the score of positive emotion of college students was 31. 41 ± 5.09, and the negative emotion score was 18.54 ± 5.68. The total score of internet addiction were positively correlated with score of negative emotion (all P < 0. 05). The total score of internet addiction scale of college students were positively correlated and each factor score of with the score of fatigue severity (all P < 0. 05). Fatigue played an intermediary role in the prediction of negative emotion and internet addiction of college students, with an intermediary role of-0.433, accounting for 76.35% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: The college students' positive emotion may be strengthened to reduce their fatigue level and negative emotion so as to reduce internet addiction.
