RESUMEN

Planets with radii between that of the Earth and Neptune (hereafter referred to as 'sub-Neptunes') are found in close-in orbits around more than half of all Sun-like stars1,2. However, their composition, formation and evolution remain poorly understood3. The study of multiplanetary systems offers an opportunity to investigate the outcomes of planet formation and evolution while controlling for initial conditions and environment. Those in resonance (with their orbital periods related by a ratio of small integers) are particularly valuable because they imply a system architecture practically unchanged since its birth. Here we present the observations of six transiting planets around the bright nearby star HD 110067. We find that the planets follow a chain of resonant orbits. A dynamical study of the innermost planet triplet allowed the prediction and later confirmation of the orbits of the rest of the planets in the system. The six planets are found to be sub-Neptunes with radii ranging from 1.94R⊕ to 2.85R⊕. Three of the planets have measured masses, yielding low bulk densities that suggest the presence of large hydrogen-dominated atmospheres.

Carbon storage and cycling in boreal forests-the largest terrestrial carbon store-is moderated by complex interactions between trees and soil microorganisms. However, existing methods limit our ability to predict how changes in environmental conditions will alter these associations and the essential ecosystem services they provide. To address this, we developed a metatranscriptomic approach to analyze the impact of nutrient enrichment on Norway spruce fine roots and the community structure, function, and tree-microbe coordination of over 350 root-associated fungal species. In response to altered nutrient status, host trees redefined their relationship with the fungal community by reducing sugar efflux carriers and enhancing defense processes. This resulted in a profound restructuring of the fungal community and a collapse in functional coordination between the tree and the dominant Basidiomycete species, and an increase in functional coordination with versatile Ascomycete species. As such, there was a functional shift in community dominance from Basidiomycetes species, with important roles in enzymatically cycling recalcitrant carbon, to Ascomycete species that have melanized cell walls that are highly resistant to degradation. These changes were accompanied by prominent shifts in transcriptional coordination between over 60 predicted fungal effectors, with more than 5,000 Norway spruce transcripts, providing mechanistic insight into the complex molecular dialogue coordinating host trees and their fungal partners. The host-microbe dynamics captured by this study functionally inform how these complex and sensitive biological relationships may mediate the carbon storage potential of boreal soils under changing nutrient conditions.

EBV+ diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) not otherwise specified (NOS) is a new entity confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017. In this new entity, the virus may contribute to a tolerogenic microenvironment. Traces of the virus have been described in DLBCL with more sensitive methods, in cases that were originally diagnosed as negative. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of immune response genes in the tumor microenvironment to disclose the role of the virus and its traces in DLBCL. In 48 DLBCL cases, the expression of immune response genes and the presence of molecules that induce tolerance, such as TIM3, LAG3 and PDL1 by immunohistochemistry (IHC), were studied. To broaden the study of the microenvironment, tumor-associated macrophages (TMAs) were also explored. No significant differences were observed in the expression of immune response genes in the EBV+ DLBCL and those cases that were EBV- DLBCL but that exhibited viral traces, assessed by ViewRNA assay. Only the EBV+ DLBCL cases displayed a significantly higher increase in the expression of CD8 and cytotoxic T cells detected by gene expression analysis, and of PDL1 in tumor cells and in the expression of CD68 in the tumor microenvironment detected by IHC, not observed in those cases with viral traces. The increase in CD8 and cytotoxic T cells, PDL1 and CD68 markers only in EBV+ DLBCL may indicate that traces of viral infection might not have influence in immune response markers.

OBJECTIVE: Effective first-trimester screening for pre-eclampsia (PE) can be achieved using a competing-risks model that combines risk factors from the maternal history with multiples of the median (MoM) values of biomarkers. A new model using artificial intelligence through machine-learning methods has been shown to achieve similar screening performance without the need for conversion of raw data of biomarkers into MoM. This study aimed to investigate whether this model can be used across populations without specific adaptations. METHODS: Previously, a machine-learning model derived with the use of a fully connected neural network for first-trimester prediction of early (< 34 weeks), preterm (< 37 weeks) and all PE was developed and tested in a cohort of pregnant women in the UK. The model was based on maternal risk factors and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI), placental growth factor (PlGF) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A). In this study, the model was applied to a dataset of 10 110 singleton pregnancies examined in Spain who participated in the first-trimester PE validation (PREVAL) study, in which first-trimester screening for PE was carried out using the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) competing-risks model. The performance of screening was assessed by examining the area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve (AUC) and detection rate (DR) at a 10% screen-positive rate (SPR). These indices were compared with those derived from the application of the FMF competing-risks model. The performance of screening was poor if no adjustment was made for the analyzer used to measure PlGF, which was different in the UK and Spain. Therefore, adjustment for the analyzer used was performed using simple linear regression. RESULTS: The DRs at 10% SPR for early, preterm and all PE with the machine-learning model were 84.4% (95% CI, 67.2-94.7%), 77.8% (95% CI, 66.4-86.7%) and 55.7% (95% CI, 49.0-62.2%), respectively, with the corresponding AUCs of 0.920 (95% CI, 0.864-0.975), 0.913 (95% CI, 0.882-0.944) and 0.846 (95% CI, 0.820-0.872). This performance was achieved with the use of three of the biomarkers (MAP, UtA-PI and PlGF); inclusion of PAPP-A did not provide significant improvement in DR. The machine-learning model had similar performance to that achieved by the FMF competing-risks model (DR at 10% SPR, 82.7% (95% CI, 69.6-95.8%) for early PE, 72.7% (95% CI, 62.9-82.6%) for preterm PE and 55.1% (95% CI, 48.8-61.4%) for all PE) without requiring specific adaptations to the population. CONCLUSIONS: A machine-learning model for first-trimester prediction of PE based on a neural network provides effective screening for PE that can be applied in different populations. However, before doing so, it is essential to make adjustments for the analyzer used for biochemical testing. © 2023 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare cytotoxic T-cell lymphoma with indolent behavior, mostly present in women and associated with immunological diseases whose pathogenic background is still poorly understood. SPTCL is associated with lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP) and histologically misdiagnosed. OBJECTIVES: the aim of our study was to identify mutations affecting the pathogenesis of both SPTCL and LEP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: we studied a total of 10 SPTCL and 10 LEP patients using targeted Next Generation Sequencing and pyrosequencing. Differences in gene expression between molecular subgroups were investigated using NanoString technology. Clinical data were collected, and correlations sought with the molecular data obtained. RESULTS: the mutational profile of SPTCL and LEP is different. We identified fewer pathogenic mutations than previously reported in SPTCL, noting a single HAVCR2-mutated SPTCL case. Interestingly, 40% of our SPTCL cases showed the pathogenic TP53 (p.Pro72Arg) (P72R) variant. Although cases showing HAVCR2 mutations or the TP53 (P72R) variant had more severe symptomatic disease, none developed hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). Furthermore, TP53 (P72R)-positive cases were characterized by a lower metabolic signaling pathway and higher levels of CD28 expression and Treg signaling genes. In addition, 30% of our cases featured the same mutation (T735C) of the epigenetic modificatory gene DNMT3A. None of the LEP cases showed mutations in any of the studied genes. CONCLUSIONS: the mutational landscape of SPTCL is broader than previously anticipated. We describe, for the first time, the involvement of the TP53 (P72R) pathogenic variant in this subgroup of tumors, consider the possible role of different genetic backgrounds in the development of SPTCL, and conclude that LEP does not follow the same pathogenic pathway as SPTCL.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has been firmly established as a treatment choice for patients with oligometastases, as it has demonstrated both safety and efficacy by consistently achieving high rates of local control. Moreover, it offers potential survival benefits for carefully selected patients in real-world clinical settings. METHODS: Between January 2008 and May 2020, a total of 149 patients (with 414 liver metastases) received treatment. The Active Breathing Coordinator device was used for 68 patients, while respiratory gating was used for 65 and abdominal compression was used for 16 patients. The most common histological finding was colorectal adenocarcinoma, with 37.6% of patients having three or more metastases, and 18% having two metastases. The prescribed dose ranged from 36 to 60 Gy, delivered in 3-5 fractions. RESULTS: Local control rates at 2 and 3 years were 76.1% and 61.2%, respectively, with no instances of local recurrence after 3 years. Factors negatively impacting local control included colorectal histology, lower prescribed dose, and the occurrence of new liver metastases. The median overall survival from SBRT was 32 months, with the presence of metastases outside the liver and the development of new liver metastases after SBRT affecting survival. The median disease-free survival was 10 months. No substantial differences in both local control and survival were observed between the respiratory motion control techniques employed. Treatment tolerance was excellent, with only one patient experiencing acute grade IV thrombocytopenia and two patients suffering from ≥ grade II chronic toxicity. CONCLUSION: For radical management of single or multiple liver metastases, SBRT is an effective and well-tolerated treatment option. Regardless of the technology employed, experienced physicians can achieve similarly positive outcomes. However, additional studies are required to elucidate prognostic factors that can facilitate improved patient selection.

Hearing and balance rely on the capacity of mechanically sensitive hair bundles to transduce vibrations into electrical signals that are forwarded to the brain. Hair bundles possess tip links that interconnect the mechanosensitive stereocilia and convey force to the transduction channels. A dimer of dimers, each of these links comprises two molecules of protocadherin 15 (PCDH15) joined to two of cadherin 23 (CDH23). The "handshake" that conjoins the four molecules can be disrupted in vivo by intense stimulation and in vitro by exposure to Ca2+ chelators. Using hair bundles from the rat's cochlea and the bullfrog's sacculus, we observed that extensive recovery of mechanoelectrical transduction, hair bundle stiffness, and spontaneous bundle oscillation can occur within seconds after Ca2+ chelation, especially if hair bundles are deflected toward their short edges. Investigating the phenomenon in a two-compartment ionic environment that mimics natural conditions, we combined iontophoretic application of a Ca2+ chelator to selectively disrupt the tip links of individual frog hair bundles with displacement clamping to control hair bundle motion and measure forces. Our observations suggest that, after the normal Ca2+ concentration has been restored, mechanical stimulation facilitates the reconstitution of functional tip links.

Modeling noisy oscillations of active systems is one of the current challenges in physics and biology. Because the physical mechanisms of such processes are often difficult to identify, we propose a linear stochastic model driven by a non-Markovian bistable noise that is capable of generating self-sustained periodic oscillation. We derive analytical predictions for most relevant dynamical and thermodynamic properties of the model. This minimal model turns out to describe accurately bistablelike oscillatory motion of hair bundles in bullfrog sacculus, extracted from experimental data. Based on and in agreement with these data, we estimate the power required to sustain such active oscillations to be of the order of 100 k_{B}T per oscillation cycle.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictive performance of a previously reported competing-risks model of screening for pre-eclampsia (PE) at 35-37 weeks' gestation by combinations of maternal risk factors, mean arterial pressure (MAP), uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI), serum placental growth factor (PlGF) and serum soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) in a validation dataset derived from the screened population of the STATIN study. METHODS: This was a prospective third-trimester multicenter study of screening for PE in singleton pregnancies by means of a previously reported algorithm that combines maternal risk factors and biomarkers. Women in the high-risk group were invited to participate in a trial of pravastatin vs placebo, but the trial showed no evidence of an effect of pravastatin in the prevention of PE. Patient-specific risks of delivery with PE were calculated using the competing-risks model, and the performance of screening for PE by maternal risk factors alone and by various combinations of risk factors with MAP, UtA-PI, PlGF and sFlt-1 was assessed. The predictive performance of the model was examined by, first, the ability of the model to discriminate between the PE and no-PE groups using the area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve (AUC) and the detection rate at a fixed false-positive rate of 10%, and, second, calibration by measurements of calibration slope and calibration-in-the-large. RESULTS: The study population of 29 677 pregnancies contained 653 that developed PE. In screening for PE by a combination of maternal risk factors, MAP, PlGF and sFlt-1 (triple test), the detection rate at a 10% false-positive rate was 79% (95% CI, 76-82%) and the results were consistent with the data used for developing the algorithm. Addition of UtA-PI did not improve the prediction provided by the triple test. The AUC for the triple test was 0.923 (95% CI, 0.913-0.932), demonstrating very high discrimination between affected and unaffected pregnancies. Similarly, the calibration slope was 0.875 (95% CI, 0.831-0.919), demonstrating good agreement between the predicted risk and observed incidence of PE. CONCLUSION: The competing-risks model provides an effective and reproducible method for third-trimester prediction of term PE. © 2021 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Deviations in linearity in survival curves are common in inactivation kinetics during heat treatment. These might lead one to underestimate how effective thermal treatment is. In previous research we reported a relationship between decimal reduction time values (DT) and shoulder lengths (Sl) of survival curves which was characteristic of each microorganism. However, the impact of other factors such as sporulation temperature and pH of the treatment media on shoulder length is still not known. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of sporulation temperature (45, 55 and 65 °C) and pH (4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0) treatment has on the profile of survival curves and on the relationship between Sl/DT of G. stearothermophilus STCC 4517. The results obtained demonstrated that all the spore suspensions, independently of sporulation temperature and pH, showed survival curves with shoulder phenomena, whose duration was an exponential function of treatment temperature. Although both parameters had a significant effect on heat resistance, the relationship between the shoulder length and DT values was constant at all pHs for spores produced at the optimum sporulation temperature.

We report on the collision-coalescence dynamics of drops in Leidenfrost state using liquids with different physicochemical properties. Drops of the same liquid deposited on a hot concave surface coalesce practically at contact, but when drops of different liquids collide, they can bounce several times before finally coalescing when the one that evaporates faster reaches a size similar to its capillary length. The bouncing dynamics is produced because the drops are not only in Leidenfrost state with the substrate, they also experience Leidenfrost effect between them at the moment of collision. This happens due to their different boiling temperatures, and therefore, the hotter drop works as a hot surface for the drop with lower boiling point, producing three contact zones of Leidenfrost state simultaneously. We called this scenario the triple Leidenfrost effect.

To date, heat is still the most used technology in food preservation. The calculus of heat treatments is usually based on Bigelow observations i.e. treatment time is an exponential function of the heat treatment temperature. However, a number of researchers have reported deviations from linearity in heat inactivation curves that caused errors in the calculus. This research was designed to evaluate the variability of shoulder length among different sporulated species, the impact of treatment temperature on these shoulders and the relationship between the traditional DT value and shoulder length. The heat inactivation kinetics of five bacterial spores of importance for the food industry was evaluated. B. weihenstephanensis and B. cereus did not show shoulders and DT values calculated ranged from 0.99 to 0.23 and from 1.33 to 0.56 respectively at temperatures from 100 to 102.5 °C. On the other side B. subtilis, B. licheniformis and G. stearothermophilus showed shoulders of 1.75-0.42, 1.92-0.43 and 3.22-0.78 and DT values of 1.52-0.32, 2.12-0.59 and 2.22-0.48 respectively in the range of temperatures tested. From the results obtained it was concluded that the presence and magnitude of shoulders depended on the bacterial spore species, the longest being those on the bacterial spores which showed greatest heat resistance. It has also been proved that shoulder lengths vary with treatment temperature in the same proportion of traditional DT values, with the relationship Sl/DT being constant. Thus, an equation which included the constant Sl/DT was proposed.

The objectives of this research were to study (1) the dispersion of MWCNTs in an aqueous system by three commercial admixtures (CAds) for concrete, and (2) the effect of CAds and MWCNTs on indirect tensile strength and electrical conductivity of MWCNTs-high early strength (HE) cement-mortar composites. To achieve the objectives, we dispersed MWCNTs in an aqueous system with (1) hydroxylated polymers-based water reducing plasticizer (HPs), a nonionic compound, (2) Naphthalene based superplasticizer (SNF), an anionic compound, and (3) calcium chloride-based accelerating agent (CC) a neutral amphoteric salt. We prepared a total of 242 samples grouped in three sets: (1) Plain mortar [PM] (water + HE cement + Sand), (2) [PM+CAd], and (3) [PM+CAd+MWCNTs]. The three CAds dispersed MWCNTs in an aqueous solution. The CC and HPs admixtures have a two-time bigger dispersing power than the SNF. They demand half of SNF's ultrasound energy for optimal dispersion. Although the SNF (anionic) based superplasticizer resulted incompatible with the HE cement, it improved the indirect tensile strength of [PM+SNF+MWCNTs] composite. In contrast, the CC (amphoteric) based accelerating agent was compatible with the HE cement; the CC adsorption on the MWCNTs surface favors an improvement in the electrical conductivity of [PM+CAd+MWCNTs] composite.

Lignocellulosic residues are low-cost abundant feedstocks that can be used for industrial applications. However, their recalcitrance currently makes lignocellulose use limited. In natural environments, microbial communities can completely deconstruct lignocellulose by synergistic action of a set of enzymes and proteins. Microbial degradation of lignin by fungi, important lignin degraders in nature, has been intensively studied. More recently, bacteria have also been described as able to break down lignin, and to have a central role in recycling this plant polymer. Nevertheless, bacterial deconstruction of lignin has not been fully elucidated yet. Direct analysis of environmental samples using metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metaproteomics approaches is a powerful strategy to describe/discover enzymes, metabolic pathways, and microorganisms involved in lignin breakdown. Indeed, the use of these complementary techniques leads to a better understanding of the composition, function, and dynamics of microbial communities involved in lignin deconstruction. We focus on omics approaches and their contribution to the discovery of new enzymes and reactions that impact the development of lignin-based bioprocesses.

Breast implant anaplastic large cell lymphoma is an entity recently recognized by the World Health Organization. The tumor arises around textured-surface breast implants and is usually confined to the surrounding fibrous capsule. Currently, there are no recommendations for handling and sampling of capsules from patients with suspected breast implant anaplastic large cell lymphoma without a grossly identifiable tumor. We analyzed complete capsulectomies without distinct gross lesions from patients with breast implant anaplastic large cell lymphoma. The gross appearance of the capsules as well as the presence, extent and depth of tumor cells on the luminal side and number of sections involved by lymphoma were determined by review of routine stains and CD30 immunohistochemistry. We then used a mathematical model that included the extent of tumor cells and number of positive sections to calculate the minimum number of sections required to identify 95% of randomly distributed lesions. We identified 50 patients with breast implant anaplastic large cell lymphoma who had complete capsulectomies. The implants were textured in all 32 (100%) cases with available information. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma was found in 44/50 (88%) capsules; no tumor was found in six (12%) patients who had lymphoma cells only in the effusion. The median number of sections reviewed was 20 (range, 2-240), the median percentage of sections involved by tumor was 6% (range, 0-90%), and the median percentage of sections involved by lymphoma was 10% (range, 0-90%). Invasion deep into or through the capsule was identified in 18/50 (36%) patients. In patients with breast implant anaplastic large cell lymphoma without a grossly identifiable tumor we identified a spectrum of involvement and we propose a protocol for handling, sampling and reporting these cases. The number of sections to exclude the presence of lymphoma with more than 95% certainty was supported by a mathematic rationale.

To encourage the reutilization of treated wastewaters as an adaptation strategy to climate change it is necessary to demonstrate their quality. If this is ensured, reclaimed waters could be a valuable resource that produces very little environmental impact and risks to human health. However, wastewaters are one of the main sources of emerging pollutants that are discharged in the environment. For this, it is essential to assess the presence of these pollutants, especially pharmaceutical compounds, in treated wastewaters. Moreover, the different treatment processes must be evaluated in order to know if conventional and natural treatment technologies are efficient in the removal of these types of compounds. This is an important consideration if the treated wastewaters are used in agricultural activities. Owing to the complexity of wastewater matrixes and the low concentrations of pharmaceutical residues in these types of samples, it is necessary to use sensitive analytical methodologies. In this study, the presence of 11 pharmaceutical compounds were assessed in three different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Gran Canaria (Spain). Two of these WWTPs use conventional purification technologies and they are located in densely populated areas, while the other studied WWTP is based in constructed wetlands which purify the wastewaters of a rural area. The sampling was performed monthly for two years. A solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was applied for the analysis of the samples, and the 11 pharmaceuticals were detected in all the studied WWTPs. The concentrations were variable and ranged from ng·L-1 in some compounds like diclofenac or carbamazepine to µg·L-1 in common pharmaceutical compounds such as caffeine, naproxen or ibuprofen. In addition, removal efficiencies in both conventional and natural purification systems were evaluated. Similar removal efficiencies were obtained using different purifying treatments, especially for some pharmaceutical families as stimulants or anti-inflammatories. Other compounds like carbamazepine showed a recalcitrant behavior. Secondary treatments presented similar removal efficiencies in both conventional and natural wastewater treatment plants, but conventional treatments showed slightly higher elimination ratios. Regarding tertiary system, the treatment with highest removal efficiencies was reverse osmosis in comparison with microfiltration and electrodialysis reversal.

BACKGROUND: Surgery remains to be the main therapeutic approach for retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) although evidence supports that complementary radiotherapy increases local-control and survival. We present a multidisciplinary management and experience of a tertiary cancer center in the treatment of RPS and analyze current evidence of radiotherapy efficacy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 19 patients with primary or relapsed RPS treated between November 2009 and October 2018. Multidisciplinary approach comprised complete resection in 15 patients (79%) achieving resection R0 in 11 patients (58%), R1 in 4 patients (21%) and R2 in 2 patients (10%). Seven patients (37%) underwent a preoperative radiation (PRORT), 10 patients (53%), post-operative radiation (PORT) and 2 patients (10%), received radiotherapy exclusively. Ten patients (53%) received adjuvant chemotherapy. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 24 months (2-114 months), actuarial rates of loco-regional relapse free survival (LRFS) at 1, 2 and 3 years were 77%, 77% and 67%, respectively. Actuarial rates of distant-metastases-free survival (DMFS), disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) at 1, 2 and 3 years were 100%, 100% and 80% for DMFS; 94%, 77% and 67% for DFS and 100%, 91% and 91% for OS, respectively. Only surgical margins (negative vs. positive) showed significance for 3y-LRFS: 100% vs. 34.3%, p = 0.018. Treatment tolerance was acceptable with no acute or late toxicity higher than grade 2. CONCLUSIONS: Complementary radiotherapy appears to be useful and well tolerated for the multidisciplinary management of RPS. Presence of positive surgical margins seems to be the most relevant prognostic factor through the follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: To report our 2 years of experience navigating the interference of anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (MAs) in 33 patients and describe papain-treated panels as a complementary method to dithiothreitol (DTT). BACKGROUND: Novel anti-CD38 MAs are now approved or undergoing clinical trials to evaluate their activity in patients with multiple myeloma. A concern with the use of these drugs is that they interfere with blood bank tests in a group of patients who often require blood transfusions. METHODS: Clinical data and whole blood samples were collected from patients receiving daratumumab or isatuximab. Routine blood bank serological tests were performed. RESULTS: A total of 9·1% of patients presented with alloantibodies prior to treatment. All patients exhibited nonspecific reactivity in indirect antiglobulin tests, and 26% had positive direct antiglobulin tests after beginning treatment. This interference disappeared in all patients after discontinuing treatment. Papain panels avoided this reactivity and allowed us to identify alloantibodies. Phenotyped blood units were transfused, and no patient suffered any transfusion-related complications. CONCLUSION: Anti-CD38 MAs produce nonspecific interference in blood bank tests. This interference can be overcome by various methods, including DTT or papain treatment as proposed here. These methods have limitations that can be resolved using phenotyped blood units.

BACKGROUND: Melasma is an acquired, facial hyperpigmentation without a specific origin. It is regularly associated with multiple etiologic factors such as pregnancy, genetic, racial, and from estrogen administration. Among the methods to treat skin hyperpigmentation a series of skin bleaching agents have been used. At present, the most commonly used agent is known as hydroquinone. Nowadays, it is known that hydroquinone can cause cancer in animals with unknown relevance to humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this work, Raman spectroscopy was used to observe the presence of hydroquinone in the skin of 18 patients who have been under treatment for melasma. RESULTS: A significant increase in the Raman signal was observed in the six bands associated with hydroquinone after melasma treatment. CONCLUSION: The authors believe that monitoring the presence of hydroquinone may be useful for an optimal personalized treatment of melasma and to provide the specialist a support tool to control the administration of this type of bleaching agents.
