RESUMEN
The influence of religion, education and socioeconomic status on opinion regarding medical termination of pregnancy were examined. A random sample of 514 married, urban women was selected. The study revealed that religion, education and economic status influenced the formation of opinion regarding pregnancy termination. The women gave many reasons for considering it beneficial. The most common reasons were that pregnancy termination offered increased opportunities for better education and nutrition. The limitation of family size and elimination of unwanted pregnancies were also noted as needs of the community.

In the Ayurvedha and Sidha system of medicine (Indian system of medicine) Azadirachta indica ADR ('Neem') and Curcuma longa ('Turmeric') has been used for healing chronic ulcers and scabies. The 'Neem' and 'Turmeric' was used as a paste for the treatment of scabies in 814 people. In 97% of cases cure was obtained within 3 to 15 days of treatment. We find that this is a very cheap, easily available, effective and acceptable mode of treatment for the villagers in the developing countries. We have noticed no toxic or adverse reaction so far. However, further research is needed.

Our study has revealed the strong influence of tradition on child rearing practices in an Indian slum community. It is made clear that health education is essential to correct malpractices. Though the mothers were knowledgeable about the supplementary feeding they did not put the ideas into practice.

A prospective psychiatric study of women undergoing hysterectomy conducted in Christian Medical College, Vellore, is described. About 20% of patients who had Hysterectomy developed depressive symptoms during the first year of follow up. Those who developed these symptoms had higher N score on Eysenck Personality Inventory and a higher M. R. Score on Cornell Medical Index before the operation when compared to those who did not develop psychiatric symptoms which suggests that the patients who have a higher score on Neuroticism are more prone to get psychiatric illness. It is emphasised that an attempt must be made to identify such patients who are more prone to get psychiatric disturbance in order to prevent or minimise these psychiatric disturbances. Prior consideration to these complications should be given before doing hysterectomy.
