RESUMEN

Precise and personalized drug application is crucial in the clinical treatment of complex diseases. Although neural networks offer a new approach to improving drug strategies, their internal structure is difficult to interpret. Here, we propose PBAC (Pathway-Based Attention Convolution neural network), which integrates a deep learning framework and attention mechanism to address the complex biological pathway information, thereby provide a biology function-based robust drug responsiveness prediction model. PBAC has four layers: gene-pathway layer, attention layer, convolution layer and fully connected layer. PBAC improves the performance of predicting drug responsiveness by focusing on important pathways, helping us understand the mechanism of drug action in diseases. We validated the PBAC model using data from four chemotherapy drugs (Bortezomib, Cisplatin, Docetaxel and Paclitaxel) and 11 immunotherapy datasets. In the majority of datasets, PBAC exhibits superior performance compared to traditional machine learning methods and other research approaches (area under curve = 0.81, the area under the precision-recall curve = 0.73). Using PBAC attention layer output, we identified some pathways as potential core cancer regulators, providing good interpretability for drug treatment prediction. In summary, we presented PBAC, a powerful tool to predict drug responsiveness based on the biology pathway information and explore the potential cancer-driving pathways.

RESUMEN

The rapid development of genomic high-throughput sequencing has identified a large number of DNA regulatory elements with abundant epigenetics markers, which promotes the rapid accumulation of functional genomic region data. The comprehensively understanding and research of human functional genomic regions is still a relatively urgent work at present. However, the existing analysis tools lack extensive annotation and enrichment analytical abilities for these regions. Here, we designed a novel software, Genomic Region sets Enrichment Analysis Platform (GREAP), which provides comprehensive region annotation and enrichment analysis capabilities. Currently, GREAP supports 85 370 genomic region reference sets, which cover 634 681 107 regions across 11 different data types, including super enhancers, transcription factors, accessible chromatins, etc. GREAP provides widespread annotation and enrichment analysis of genomic regions. To reflect the significance of enrichment analysis, we used the hypergeometric test and also provided a Locus Overlap Analysis. In summary, GREAP is a powerful platform that provides many types of genomic region sets for users and supports genomic region annotations and enrichment analyses. In addition, we developed a customizable genome browser containing >400 000 000 customizable tracks for visualization. The platform is freely available at http://www.liclab.net/Greap/view/index.

RESUMEN

Over decades of development, while phosphoramidite chemistry has been known as the leading method in commercial synthesis of oligonucleotides, it has also revolutionized the fabrication of sequence-defined polymers (SDPs), offering novel functional materials in polymer science and clinical medicine. This review has introduced the evolution of phosphoramidite chemistry, emphasizing its development from the synthesis of oligonucleotides to the creation of universal SDPs, which have unlocked the potential for designing programmable smart biomaterials with applications in diverse areas including data storage, regenerative medicine and drug delivery. The key methodologies, functions, biomedical applications, and future challenges in SDPs, have also been summarized in this review, underscoring the significance of breakthroughs in precisely synthesized materials.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease using the optical coherence tomography angiography. METHODS: This clinical trial totally enrolls 78 eyes from 39 participants, and all these patients with moyamoya disease (N = 13) are set as experimental group and participants with health who matched with age and gender are considered as the control group (N = 26). Then all these participants receive optical coherence tomography angiography detection. Participants' general data are collected and analyzed. Skeleton density (SD) value, vessel density (VD) value, fractal dimension (FD) value, vessel diameter index (VDI) value, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) value are analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 39 participants are included in this study. The SD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in control group (0.175 [0.166, 0.181] vs. 0.184 [0.175, 0.188], p = 0.017). Similarly, the VD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (0.333 [0.320, 0.350] vs. 0.354 [0.337, 0.364], p = 0.024). Additionally, the FD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (2.088 [2.083, 2.094] vs. 2.096 [2.090, 2.101], p = 0.022). As for the VDI and FAZ, VDI and FAZ values in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group, there was no significant difference in VDI and FAZ values between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study, using non-invasive and rapid OCTA imaging, confirmed decreased retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease.

PURPOSE: The overwhelming inflammatory response plays a critical role in the secondary injury cascade of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI). The systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) are two novel inflammatory biomarkers. The SII was calculated based on lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts, while the SIRI was calculated based on lymphocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte counts. Their prognostic value in patients with tSCI remains unclear. METHODS: Patients with tSCI admitted within 24 h of trauma were retrospectively and consecutively enrolled. Peripheral blood samples were collected on admission. The primary outcome was American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade conversion at discharge. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between SII and SIRI and AIS grade conversion. We performed receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis to assess the discriminative ability of SII, and SIRI in predicting AIS grade conversion. RESULTS: Among 280 included patients, 77 (27.5%) had improved AIS grade conversion at discharge. After adjustment for confounders, SII was independently associated with AIS grade conversion (per SD, odds ratio [OR], 0.68; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.47-0.98, p = 0.040), while the association between SIRI and AIS grade conversion was insignificant (per 1 SD, OR, 0.77; 95% CI 0.55-1.08, p = 0.130). The ROC analysis revealed that the SII had the best predictive value for AIS grade conversion (area under curve: 0.608, 95% CI 0.536-0.678). CONCLUSIONS: Increased SII was independently associated with a decreased likelihood of improved AIS grade conversion.

Calcium overload therapy refers to the condition of intracellular Ca2+ overload, which causes mitochondrial damage and leads to the uncontrolled release of apoptotic factors into the cytoplasm through the open mitochondrial permeability pore. Based on this, it is playing an increasingly important role in the field of oncology due to its good efficacy and small side effects. However, the regulation of calcium homeostasis by cancer cells themselves, insufficient calcium ions (Ca2+) in tumor sites and low efficiency of calcium entering tumor have limited its efficacy, resulting in unsatisfactory therapeutic effect. Therefore, a novel CAP/BSA@TCP-ZIF-8 nanoparticle drug carrier system was constructed that can provide Ca2+ from exogenous sources for pH-controlled degradation and drug release at the same time. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments have proved that the nanomaterial can activate TRPV1 channels and provide exogenous Ca2+ to cause Ca2+ overload and apoptosis, thus achieving anti-tumor effects.

There is a potential link between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The aim of this study is to investigate the molecular processes that underlie the development of these two conditions by bioinformatics methods. The gene expression samples for RA (GSE77298) and IPF (GSE24206) were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. After identifying the overlapping differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for RA and IPF, we conducted functional annotation, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, and hub gene identification. Finally, we used the hub genes to predict potential medications for the treatment of both disorders. We identified 74 common DEGs for further analysis. Functional analysis demonstrated that cellular components, biological processes, and molecular functions all played a role in the emergence and progression of RA and IPF. Using the cytoHubba plugin, we identified 7 important hub genes, namely COL3A1, SDC1, CCL5, CXCL13, MMP1, THY1, and BDNF. As diagnostic indicators for RA, SDC1, CCL5, CXCL13, MMP1, and THY1 showed favorable values. For IPF, COL3A1, SDC1, CCL5, CXCL13, THY1, and BDNF were favorable diagnostic markers. Furthermore, we predicted 61 Chinese and 69 Western medications using the hub genes. Our research findings demonstrate a shared pathophysiology between RA and IPF, which may provide new insights for more mechanistic research and more effective treatments. These common pathways and hub genes identified in our study offer potential opportunities for developing more targeted therapies that can address both disorders.

Soil Cd pollution is a significant environmental issue faced by contemporary society. Kentucky bluegrass is considered a potential phytoremediation species, as some varieties have excellent cadmium (Cd) tolerance. However, the mechanisms of Cd accumulation and transportation in Kentucky bluegrass are still not fully understood. The Cd-tolerant Kentucky bluegrass cultivar 'Midnight' (M) exhibits lower Cd translocation efficiency and a higher leaf Cd concentration compared to the Cd-sensitive cultivar 'Rugby II' (R). We hypothesized that Cd translocation from roots to shoots in cultivar M is hindered by the endodermal barriers and cell wall polysaccharides; hence, we conducted Cd distribution, cytological observation, cell wall component, and transcriptomic analyses under Cd stress conditions using the M and R cultivars. Cd stress resulted in the thickening of the endodermis and increased synthesis of cell wall polysaccharides in both the M and R cultivars. Endodermis development restricted the radical transport of Cd from the root cortex to the stele, while the accumulation of cell wall polysaccharides promoted the binding of Cd to the cell wall. These changes further inhibited the long-distance translocation of Cd from the roots to the aerial parts. Furthermore, the M cultivar exhibited limited long-distance Cd translocation efficiency compared to the R cultivar, which was attributed to the enhanced development of endodermal barriers and increased Cd binding by cell wall polysaccharides. This study provides valuable insights for screening high Cd transport efficiency in Kentucky bluegrass based on anatomical structure and genetic modification.

The recycling of industrial solid by-products such as red mud (RM) has become an urgent priority, due to their large quantities and lack of reutilization methods can lead to resource wastage. In this work, RM was employed to fabricate green hydrochar (HC) to prepare zero-valent iron (ZVI) modified carbonous materials, and conventional iron salts (IS, FeCl3) was applied as comparison, fabricated HC labeled as RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively. The physicochemical properties of these HC were comprehensively characterized. Further, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal performance was assessed (375.66 and 337.19 mg/g for RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively). The influence of dosage and initial pH were evaluated, while isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics analysis were also conducted, to mimic the surface interactions. The stability and recyclability of adsorbents also verified, while the practical feasibility was assessed by bok choy-planting experiment. This work revealed that RM can be used as a high value and green fabricant for HC the effective removal of chromium contaminants from the wastewater.

BACKGROUND: Fibrinogen has been identified as a modulator of the coagulation and inflammatory process. There is uncertainty about the relationship between the dynamic profile of fibrinogen levels and its impact on clinical outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with endovascular thrombectomy. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent endovascular thrombectomy. Fibrinogen was measured on admission and during hospitalization. The change in fibrinogen (Δfibrinogen) was calculated as the highest follow-up fibrinogen minus admission fibrinogen, with a positive Δfibrinogen indicating an increase in fibrinogen level. Functional outcome was assessed by the modified Rankin Scale at 3 months. Poor outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale > 2. RESULTS: A total of 346 patients were included (mean age 67.4 ± 13.6 years, 52.31% men). The median fibrinogen on admission was 2.77 g/L (interquartile range 2.30-3.39 g/L). The median Δfibrinogen was 1.38 g/L (interquartile range 0.27-2.79 g/L). Hyperfibrinogenemia (> 4.5 g/L) on admission was associated with an increased risk of poor outcome [odds ratio (OR) 5.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.44-24.41, p = 0.014]. There was a possible U-shaped association of Δfibrinogen with outcomes, with an inflection point of - 0.43 g/L (p = 0.04). When Δfibrinogen was < - 0.43 g/L, a higher decrease in fibrinogen (lower Δfibrinogen value) was associated with a higher risk of poor outcome (OR 0.22, 95% CI 0.02-2.48, p = 0.219). When Δfibrinogen was > - 0.43 g/L, the risk of poor outcome increased with increasing fibrinogen (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.04-1.54, p = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with endovascular thrombectomy, hyperfibrinogenemia on admission was associated with poor functional outcomes at 3 months, whereas Δfibrinogen was associated with poor 3-month outcomes in a possible U-shaped manner.

OBJECTIVE: In vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) is a widely used treatment for infertility, with oocyte maturation and quality having a significant impact on oocyte fertilization, embryo development, and fetal growth. Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is essential for maintaining the mitochondrial oxidative respiratory chain and supplying energy for oocyte development, fertilization, and embryonic development. In this study, we aimed to examine TFAM expression in women undergoing IVF-ET and assess its impact on the IVF outcomes. METHODS: We recruited 85 women who underwent IVF-ET treatment for infertility. On the date of egg collection, granulosa cells were extracted from the clear follicular fluid of the first mature egg using ultrasound-guided needle aspiration. The collected granulosa cells served three purposes: (1) detecting TFAM gene expression in granulosa cells via immunocytochemistry, (2) determining TFAM mRNA expression using reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR), and (3) measuring TFAM protein expression through western blotting. RESULT: Based on the results, we found that TFAM was localized and expressed in the cytoplasm of granulosa cells, whereas no expression was detected in the nucleus. Granulosa cells exhibited a linear correlation between TFAM mRNA and TFAM protein expression. The study participants were divided into three groups using the ternary method based on relative TFAM mRNA expression thresholds of 33% and 76%: the low-expression group (n = 30), the moderate-expression group (n = 27), and the high-expression group (n = 28). When compared to the other two groups, the moderate expression group exhibited a significantly higher egg utilization rate, 2 pronucleus rate, fertilization rate, and clinical pregnancy rate (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: TFAM was detected in the cytoplasm of human ovarian granulosa cells. Women with moderate TFAM expression demonstrate enhanced outcomes in IVF.

Cadmium (Cd) and excess molybdenum (Mo) are multiorgan toxic, but the detrimental impacts of Cd and/or Mo on poultry have not been fully clarified. Thence, a 16-week sub-chronic toxic experiment was executed with ducks to assess the toxicity of Cd and/or Mo. Our data substantiated that Cd and Mo coexposure evidently reduced GSH-Px, GSH, T-SOD, and CAT activities and elevated H2O2 and MDA concentrations in myocardium. What is more, the study suggested that Cd and Mo united exposure synergistically elevated Fe2+ content in myocardium and activated AMPK/mTOR axis, then induced ferroptosis by obviously upregulating ACSL4, PTGS2, and TFRC expression levels and downregulating SLC7A11, GPX4, FPN1, FTL1, and FTH1 expression levels. Additionally, Cd and Mo coexposure further caused excessive ferritinophagy by observably increasing autophagosomes, the colocalization of endogenous FTH1 and LC3, ATG5, ATG7, LC3II/LC3I, NCOA4, and FTH1 expression levels. In brief, this study for the first time substantiated that Cd and Mo united exposure synergistically induced ferroptosis and excess ferritinophagy by AMPK/mTOR axis, finally augmenting myocardium injure in ducks, which will offer an additional view on united toxicity between two heavy metals on poultry.

Excess molybdenum (Mo) is harmful to animals, but its nephrotoxicity has not been comprehensively explained. To appraise the influences of excess Mo on Ca homeostasis and apoptosis via PLC/IP3 /IP3 R axis, primary duck renal tubular epithelial cells were exposed to 480 µM and 960 µM Mo, and joint of 960 µM Mo and 10 µM 2-APB or 0.125 µM U-73122 for 12 h (U-73122 pretreated for 1 h), respectively. The data revealed that the increment of [Ca2+ ]c induced by Mo mainly originated from intracellular Ca storage. Mo exposure reduced [Ca2+ ]ER , elevated [Ca2+ ]mit , [Ca2+ ]c , and the expression of Ca homeostasis-related factors (Calpain, CaN, CRT, GRP94, GRP78 and CaMKII). 2-APB could effectively reverse subcellular Ca2+ redistribution by inhibiting IP3 R, which confirmed that [Ca2+ ]c overload induced by Mo originated from ER. Additionally, PLC inhibitor U-73122 remarkably mitigated the change, and dramatically reduced the number of apoptotic cells, the expression of Bak-1, Bax, cleaved-Caspase-3/Caspase-3, and notably increased the expression of Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, and Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Overall, the results confirmed that the Ca2+ liberation of ER via PLC/IP3 /IP3 R axis was the main cause of [Ca2+ ]c overload, and then stimulated apoptosis in duck renal tubular epithelial cells.

Sogatella furcifera is a destructive agricultural pest causing large threats to rice production in China and Southeast Asian countries. Despite recent breakthroughs in long-read sequencing, high quality genomic data are very limited in S. furcifera. In present study, a chromosome-level assembly of the S. furcifera genome was completed (0.64 GB), comprising 15 chromosomes covered 95.04% of the estimated genome size, along with other 624 small scaffolds making up the remaining 4.96% of the genome of S. furcifera. A total of 24,669 protein-coding genes, 1211 long noncoding RNA and 7595 circular RNA transcripts were predicted in this study. Comparative genomic analysis revealed rapidly evolved genes were associated with multiple immune-related pathways in S. furcifera. Genome resequencing of 44 individuals from 12 geographic populations revealed frequent gene flow among populations. The systemic genomic analysis will provide more insights into the understanding of the immunity and evolutionary adaptation of S. furcifera.

This study aimed to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine combined with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). Computerised searches of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, PubMed, Cochrane Library and Embase databases were conducted for randomised controlled trials on the use of Chinese herbal medicines combined with NPWT for the treatment of DFU. The search period ranged from the time of establishment of each database to July 2023. Literature screening and data extraction were performed independently by two investigators, and the quality of the included studies was assessed. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4 software. A total of 25 studies were analysed, including 1777 DFUs, with 890 and 887 patients in the experimental and control groups, respectively. The results showed that the treatment of DFUs with a Chinese herbal medicine in combination with NPWT increased the overall effectiveness (odds ratio [OR] = 4.32, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.96-6.30, p < 0.001), wound healing rate (mean difference [MD] = 18.35, 95% CI: 13.07-23.64, p < 0.001) and ankle brachial index (MD = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.06-0.14, p < 0.001); reduced the wound healing time (MD = -11.01, 95% CI: -13.25 to -8.78, p < 0.001) and post-treatment wound area (MD = -1.73, 95% CI: -2.46 to -1.01, p < 0.001); decreased the C-reactive protein level (MD = -3.57, 95% CI: -5.13 to -2.00, p < 0.001); and increased vascular endothelial growth factor level (MD = 19.20, 95% CI: 8.36-30.05, p < 0.001). Thus, Chinese herbal medicines combined with NPWT can effectively promote wound healing, reduce inflammation and shorten the disease course in patients with DFU, while demonstrating precise clinical efficacy.

Cadmium (Cd) and excess molybdenum (Mo) pose serious threats to animal health. Our previous study has determined that Cd and/or Mo exposure can cause ovarian damage of ducks, while the specific mechanism is still obscure. To further investigate the toxic mechanism of Cd and Mo co-exposure in the ovary, forty 8-day-old female ducks were randomly allocated into four groups for 16 weeks, and the doses of Cd and Mo in basic diet per kg were as follows: control group, Mo group (100 mg Mo), Cd group (4 mg Cd), and Mo + Cd group (100 mg Mo + 4 mg Cd). Cadmium sulfate 8/3-hydrate (CdSO4·8/3H2O) and hexaammonium molybdate ((NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O) were the origins of Cd and Mo, respectively. At the 16th week of the experiment, all ovary tissues were collected for the detection of related indexes. The data indicated that Mo and/or Cd induced trace element disorders and Th1/Th2 balance to divert toward Th1 in the ovary, which activated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and then provoked necroptosis through triggering RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway, and eventually caused ovarian pathological injuries and necroptosis characteristics. The alterations of above indicators were most apparent in the joint group. Above all, this research illustrates that Mo and/or Cd exposure can initiate necroptosis through Th1/Th2 imbalance-modulated ER stress in duck ovaries, and Mo and Cd combined exposure aggravates ovarian injuries. This research explores the molecular mechanism of necroptosis caused by Mo and/or Cd, which reveals that ER stress attenuation may be a therapeutic target to alleviate necroptosis.

Respiratory tract infections are associated with the most common diseases transmitted among people and remain a huge threat to global public health. Rapid and sensitive diagnosis of causative agents is critical for timely treatment and disease control. Here, we developed a novel method based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with CRISPR-Cas12a to detect three viral pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, and influenza B, which cause similar symptom complexes of flu cold in the respiratory tract. The detection method can be completed within 1 h, which is faster than other standard detection methods, and the limit of detection is approximately 102 copies/µL. Additionally, this detection system is highly specific and there is no cross-reactivity with other common respiratory tract pathogens. Based on this assay, we further developed a more simplified RPA/CRISPR-Cas12a system combined with lateral flow assay on a manual microfluidic chip, which can simultaneously detect these three viruses. This low-cost detection system is rapid and sensitive, which could be applied in the field and resource-limited areas without bulky and expensive instruments, providing powerful tools for the point-of-care diagnostic.

BACKGROUND: Geographic differences exist in the antibiotic resistance patterns of Helicobacter pylori. Personalized treatment regimens based on local or individual resistance data are essential. We evaluated the current status of H. pylori resistance in Ningxia, analyzed resistance-related factors, and assessed the concordance of phenotypic and genotypic resistance. METHODS: Strains were isolated from the gastric mucosa of patients infected with H. pylori in Ningxia and relevant clinical information was collected. Phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility assays (Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion) and antibiotic resistance gene detection (Sanger sequencing) were performed. RESULTS: We isolated 1955 H. pylori strains. The resistance rates of H. pylori to amoxicillin, levofloxacin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole were 0.9%, 42.4%, 40.4%, and 94.2%, respectively. Only five tetracycline-resistant and one furazolidone-resistant strain were identified. Overall, 3.3% of the strains were sensitive to all six antibiotics. Multidrug-resistant strains accounted for 22.9%, of which less than 20% were from Wuzhong. Strains isolated from women and patients with nonulcerative disease had higher rates of resistance to levofloxacin and clarithromycin. Higher rates of resistance to metronidazole, levofloxacin, and clarithromycin were observed in the older age group than in the younger age group. The kappa coefficients of phenotypic resistance and genotypic resistance for levofloxacin and clarithromycin were 0.830 and 0.809, respectively, whereas the remaining antibiotics showed poor agreement. CONCLUSION: H. pylori antibiotic resistance is severe in Ningxia. Therefore, furazolidone, amoxicillin, and tetracycline are better choices for the empirical therapy of H. pylori infection in this region. Host sex, age, and the presence of ulcerative diseases may affect antibiotic resistance of the bacteria. Personalized therapy based on genetic testing for levofloxacin and clarithromycin resistance may be a future direction for the eradication therapy of H. pylori infection in Ningxia.

BACKGROUND: The hemodynamics of patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension are complex and variable. We aimed to investigate differences in venous pressures determined by innovative angiography and conventional angiography using balloon occlusion of the hepatic veins in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and portal hypertension. METHODS: A total of 134 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria from June 2017 to June 2020 were included. During transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, conventional and innovative angiography were performed, and venous pressures were measured. A paired t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used for analysis. RESULTS: Conventional and innovative hepatic angiography detected lateral branches of the hepatic vein in 26 (19.4%) and 65 (48.5%) cases, respectively (P < 0.001). Innovative angiography detected a total of 65 patients with lateral shunts, of whom 37 (56.9%) had initial shunts. The average wedged hepatic venous pressure and portal venous pressure of the initial lateral branches were 21.27 ± 6.66 and 35.84 ± 7.86 mmHg, respectively, with correlation and determination coefficients of 0.342 (P < 0.05) and 0.117, respectively. The mean hepatic venous pressure gradient and portal pressure gradient were 9.59 ± 7.64 and 26.86 ± 6.78 mmHg, respectively, with correlation and determination coefficients of 0.292 (P = 0.079) and 0.085, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Innovative angiography reveals collateral branches of the hepatic veins more effectively than conventional angiography. Hepatic vein collateral branches are the primary factors leading to underestimation of wedged hepatic venous pressures and hepatic venous pressure gradients, with the initial hepatic vein collateral branches resulting in the most severe underestimations.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common infections among women of reproductive age and accounts for 15-50% of infections globally. The role played by folate in the pathogenesis and progression of BV is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum folate, red blood cell (RBC) folate, and BV in American women. METHODS: 1,954 participants from the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) program were included in this study. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between serum folate, RBC folate, and BV, and covariates including race, age, education level, and body mass index were used to construct adjusted models. Stratified analysis was used to explore the stability of the above associations in different populations. RESULTS: In the present cross-sectional study, we found that serum folate and RBC folate were inversely associated with the risk of BV. In the fully adjusted model, the risk of BV was reduced by 35% (OR=0.65, 95% CI: 0.51~0.83, p=0.0007) in the highest serum folate group and 32% (OR=0.68, 95% CI: 0.53~0.87, p=0.0023) in the highest RBC folate group compared to the lowest group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicated that serum folate and RBC folate were inversely associated with the risk of BV folate supplementation may play an important role in the prevention and management of BV.
