RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The level of perceived control in people with Parkinson's disease plays a significant role in affecting their quality of life. Simpson et al. developed a scale of perceived control specific to Parkinson's disease called the Parkinson's UK Scale of Perceived Control (PUKSoPC). In this work, we present a cross-culturally adapted German translation of the original English version. METHODS: After receiving approval by the original authors, an internationally established procedure was used for cross-cultural adaptation. Firstly, the original English version was translated into German independently by two bilingual neuroscientists, who then agreed on a consensus version. This was tested on 10 people with Parkinson's disease and independently back translated into English by two different neuroscientists. After forming a consensus version, this English version was compared with the original version by all four translators. Differences between the versions resulted in modifications to the German translation so that the back translation matched the original as closely as possible. The final version was approved by two of the original authors and clinically tested on 50 people with Parkinson's disease. RESULTS: During the translation process, the four translators agreed on a culturally adapted German version of the PUKSoPC. Testing of the final version on 50 people with Parkinson's disease did not reveal any linguistic or content-related problems. CONCLUSION: The linguistically validated German version of the PUKSoPC presented in this paper is now freely available for measuring the levels of perceived control in people with Parkinson's disease to advance both research and clinical practice.

PURPOSE: The lockdown and social distancing measures introduced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the ability of people with Parkinson's to engage in normal health management practices. This led to documented reductions in psychological wellbeing. The aim of the present review was to identify factors associated with the psychological wellbeing of people with Parkinson's during the acute stage of the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five academic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science) were searched and 23 articles were identified using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings are stratified by risk factor and analysed using a narrative synthesis. RESULTS: Worsening of motor symptoms, poor motor-related daily living experiences and motor symptoms during "off time" (when symptom suppressing medication has worn off) as well as less physical activity emerged as the most consistent risk factors of worsened or poorer psychological wellbeing. A deviation from pre-pandemic risk factors was identified, with age and gender not identified as consistent risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: The implications of this review are not limited to preparing for future pandemics but can also be applied to more common concerns with comparable contextual characteristics such as yearly flu outbreaks, social isolation, and economic uncertainty.

Frequency entrainment and nonlinear synchronization are commonly observed between simple oscillatory systems, but their occurrence and behavior in continuum fluid systems are much less well understood. Motivated by possible applications to geophysical fluid systems, such as in atmospheric circulation and climate dynamics, we have carried out an experimental study of the interaction of fully developed baroclinic instability in a differentially heated, rotating fluid annulus with an externally imposed periodic modulation of the thermal boundary conditions. In quasiperiodic and chaotic amplitude-modulated traveling wave regimes, the results demonstrate a strong interaction between the natural periodic modulation of the wave amplitude and the externally imposed forcing. This leads to partial or complete phase synchronization. Synchronization effects were observed even with very weak amplitudes of forcing, and were found with both 1:1 and 1:2 frequency ratios between forcing and natural oscillations.
