RESUMEN
Powders of ß-tricalcium phosphate [ß-TCP, ß-Ca3(PO4)2] and composite powders of ß-TCP and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were synthesized by using wet precipitation methods. First, the conditions for the preparation of single phase ß-TCP have been delineated. In the co-precipitation procedure, calcium nitrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate were used as calcium and phosphorous precursors, respectively. The pH of the system was varied in the range 7-11 by adding designed amounts of ammonia solution. The filtered cakes were desiccated at 80 °C and subsequently calcined at different temperatures in the range between 700-1100 °C. Later on, rifampicin form II was used to produce drug-loaded ß-TCP and PVA/ß-TCP powders. All the synthesized materials have been characterized from morphological (by scanning electron microscopy) and structural-chemical (by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) point of view. The drug loading capacity of the selected pure ß-TCP powder has been assessed. The biological performance (cytocompatibility in fibroblast cell culture and antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) has been tested with promising results. Application perspectives of the designed drug-bioceramic-polymer blends are advanced and discussed.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the Bovine hydroxyapatite (BHA) structure. BHA powder was admixed with 5 and 10 wt% natural pumice (NP). Compression strength, Vickers micro hardness, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction studies were performed on the final NP-BHA composite products. The cells proliferation was investigated by MTT assay and SEM. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of NP-BHA samples was interrogated. RESULTS: Variances in the sintering temperature (for 5 wt% NP composites) between 1000 and 1300 °C, reveal about 700 % increase in the microhardness (~100 and 775 HV, respectively). Composites prepared at 1300 °C demonstrate the greatest compression strength with comparable result for 5 wt% NP content (87 MPa), which are significantly better than those for 10 wt% and those that do not include any NP (below 60 MPa, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results suggested the optimal parameters for the preparation of NP-BHA composites with increased mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Changes in micro-hardness and compression strength can be tailored by the tuning the NP concentration and sintering temperature. NP-BHA composites have demonstrated a remarkable potential for biomedical engineering applications such as bone graft and implant.

Chronic skin wounds pose a global clinical challenge, necessitating effective treatment strategies. This study explores the potential of 3D printed Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) scaffolds, enhanced with Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) at varying concentrations (25, 35, and 50% wt), for wound healing applications. PLA's biocompatibility, biodegradability, and thermal stability make it an ideal material for medical applications. The addition of WPC aims to mimic the skin's extracellular matrix and enhance the bioactivity of the PLA scaffolds. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy results confirmed the successful loading of WPC into the 3D printed PLA-based scaffolds. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images revealed no significant differences in pore size between PLA/WPC scaffolds and pure PLA scaffolds. Mechanical strength tests showed similar tensile strength between pure PLA and PLA with 50% WPC scaffolds. However, scaffolds with lower WPC concentrations displayed reduced tensile strength. Notably, all PLA/WPC scaffolds exhibited increased strain at break compared to pure PLA. Swelling capacity was highest in PLA with 25% WPC, approximately 130% higher than pure PLA. Scaffolds with higher WPC concentrations also showed increased swelling and degradation rates. Drug release was found to be prolonged with increasing WPC concentration. After seven days of incubation, cell viability significantly increased in PLA with 50% WPC scaffolds compared to pure PLA scaffolds. This innovative approach could pave the way for personalized wound care strategies, offering tailored treatments and targeted drug delivery. However, further studies are needed to optimize the properties of these scaffolds and validate their effectiveness in clinical settings.

This study investigates the usage of electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-3D printing for the fabrication of bacterial cellulose (BC)/polycaprolactone (PCL) patches loaded with different antibiotics (amoxicillin (AMX), ampicillin (AMP), and kanamycin (KAN)) for transdermal delivery. The composite patches demonstrated facilitated drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of drugs along with extended drug release profiles. Release curves were also subjected to model fitting, and it was found that drug release was optimally adapted to the Higuchi square root model for each drug. They performed a time-dependent and diffusion-controlled release from the patches and followed Fick's diffusion law by the Korsmeyer-Peppas energy law equation. Moreover, produced patches demonstrated excellent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) strains, so they could be helpful in the treatment of chronic infectious lesions during wound closures. As different tests have confirmed, various types of antibiotics could be loaded and successfully released regardless of their types from produced BC/PCL patches. This study could breathe life into the production of antibiotic patches for local transdermal applications in wound dressing studies and improve the quality of life of patients.
RESUMEN
The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical and biological performance of cartilage-like constructs produced by 3D printing. During the investigation, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a matrix polymer and low-molecular-weight chitosan (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), and alginic acid sodium salt (SA) were integrated separately with the polymer matrix to fabricate the constructs. Thermal, mechanical, morphology, and chemical properties and swelling, degradation, and biocompatibility behaviors were evaluated in detail. With the addition of 3 fillers, the melting temperature of the matrix increased with the addition of fillers, and PCL/3wt.%PVP/1wt.%HA had the highest melting temperature value. Mechanical characterization results demonstrated that the printed PCL/3wt.%PVP/1wt.%CS displayed the highest compressive strength of around 9.51 MPa. The compressive strength difference between the PCL/3wt.%PVP and PCL/3wt.%PVP/1wt.%CS was 5.38 MPa. Biocompatibility properties of the constructs were tested by mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity, and in vitro studies showed that the PCL/3wt.%PVP/1wt.%HA composite construct had more cell viability than the other constructs by making use of the mesenchymal stem cell line.

In recent years, scaffolds produced in 3D printing technology have become more widespread tool due to providing more advantages than traditional methods in tissue engineering applications. In this research, it was aimed to produce patches for the treatment of tympanic membrane perforations which caused significant hearing loss by using 3D printing method. Polylactic acid(PLA) scaffolds with Chitosan(CS) and Sodium Alginate(SA) added in various ratios were prepared for artificial eardrum patches. Different amounts of chitosan and sodium alginate added to PLA increased the biocompatibility of the produced scaffolds. The created patches were designed by mimicking the thickness of the natural tympanic membrane thanks to the precision provided by the 3D printed method. The produced scaffolds were analyzed separately for chemical, morphological, mechanical and biocompatibility properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was performed to observe the surface morphology and chemical structure of the scaffolds. Mechanical, thermal and physical properties, swelling and degradation behaviors were examined to fully analyze whole characteristic features of the samples. Cell culture study was also performed to demonstrate the biocompatibility properties of the fabricated scaffolds with human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAD-MSCs). 15 wt % PLA was selected as the control group and among all concentrations of CS and SA, groups containing 3 wt% CS and 3 wt% SA showed significantly superior and favorable features in printing quality. The research continued with these two scaffolds (3 wt% CS, and 3 wt% SA), which showed improved print quality when added to PLA. Overall, these results show that PLA/CS and PLA/SA 3D printed artificial patches have the potential to tissue engineering solutions to repair tympanic membrane perforation for people with hearing loss.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing application is a promising method for bone tissue engineering. For enhanced bone tissue regeneration, it is essential to have printable composite materials with appealing properties such as construct porous, mechanical strength, thermal properties, controlled degradation rates, and the presence of bioactive materials. In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL), gelatin (GEL), bacterial cellulose (BC), and different hydroxyapatite (HA) concentrations were used to fabricate a novel PCL/GEL/BC/HA composite scaffold using 3D printing method for bone tissue engineering applications. Pore structure, mechanical, thermal, and chemical analyses were evaluated. 3D scaffolds with an ideal pore size (~300 µm) for use in bone tissue engineering were generated. The addition of both bacterial cellulose (BC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) into PCL/GEL scaffold increased cell proliferation and attachment. PCL/GEL/BC/HA composite scaffolds provide a potential for bone tissue engineering applications.
RESUMEN
Electrospraying assures many advantages with taking less time and costing less relatively to the other conventional particle production methods. In this research, we investigated the encapsulation of melatonin (MEL) hormone in polycaprolactone (PCL) microparticles by using electrospraying method. Morphology analysis of the produced particles completed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM images demonstrated that micro-particles of 3â¯wt% PCL solution has the most suitable particle diameter size (2.3⯱â¯0.64⯵m) for melatonin encapsulation. According to the characterization of the particles, electrospraying parameters like optimal collecting distance, the flow rate of the solution and voltage of the system detected as 8â¯cm, 0.5â¯ml/h, and 10â¯kV respectively. For determining the chemical bonds of scaffold Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were used and FTIR results showed that melatonin successfully loaded into PCL micro-particles. Drug release kinetics of the melatonin loaded particles indicated that melatonin released with a burst at the beginning and release behavior became sustainable over a period of 8â¯h with the encapsulation efficiency of about 73%. In addition, both in-vitro and in-vivo studies of the graft materials also completed. Primary human osteoblasts (HOB) cells and female Sprague Dawley rats were used in in-vitro and in-vivo studies. Test results demonstrate cell population, and bone volume of the rats grafted with composites has remarkably increased, this caused remodelling in bone structure. Overall, these findings indicate that encapsulation of melatonin in the PCL particles with electrospray method is optimum for new synthetic graft material.

Hydroxyapatite (HA), obtained from bovine bones, was successfully reinforced with hexagonal boron nitrite (h-BN). h-BN/HA composites, with BN content up to 1.5 wt %, were sintered at various temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C, in air. Well-sintered samples were obtained after sintering at 1200 and 1300°C. The presence of h-BN contributed to dense, fine, and well-crystallized microstructure. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy showed that the produced composites comprised biphasic ß-TCP/HCA (HCA: carbonate partially substituted HA). High values of mechanical properties were achieved, namely compression strength 155 MPa for the sample 0.5% h-BN/HA and Vickers microhardness of 716 HV for the samples 1.5% h-BN/HA, both sintered at 1300°C. U2OS human bone osteosarcoma proliferation and cell viability showed no adverse effect in the presence of h-BN/HA, suggesting the potential use of the produced materials as safe biomaterials in bone tissue engineering. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Material research and development studies are focused on different techniques of bringing out nanomaterials with desired characteristics and properties. From the point of view of materials development, nowadays scientists are strongly focused on obtaining materials with predefined characteristics and properties. The morphology control seems to be a determinant factor and increasing attention is devoted to this aspect. At this moment it is possible to engineer the material's features by using different methods and materials combination for both medical and industrial applications. In the applications of chemistry and synthesis, biology, mechanics, optics solar cells and microelectronics tailoring the adjustable parameters of stoichiometry, chemical structure, shape and segregation are evaluated and opens new fields. Because of the magnetic features of nanoparticles and durable particle size, less than 100 nm, this study is aiming to describe their uses in practical applications. That's why the whole hydrodynamic magnetic core shell topic will be reviewed on this paper. Additionally, the properties acting in general sight in solid-state physics are utilized for material selection and for defining issue connecting the core, shell structure and their producing properties. Here, in the study of core/shell nanoparticle various physical and chemical synthesis routes and the effect of electrospun method are briefly discussed. Starting from a real void of the scientific literature, the existent data related to the 1D magnetic electrospun materials are reviewed. The perspectives in the medical, environmental or energetic sector is great and bring some real advantages related to the 0D core@shell structures because both mechanical and biological properties are dependent on the morphology of the materials.
