RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine cutoff values for the diagnosis of atlantoaxial instability (AAI) based on cross-sectional imaging in small-breed dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective multicenter study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Client-owned dogs (n = 123) and 28 cadavers. METHODS: Dogs were assigned to three groups: a control group, a "potentially unstable" group, and an AAI-affected group, according to imaging findings and clinical signs. The ventral compression index (VCI), cranial translation ratio (CTR), C1-C2 overlap, C1-C2 angle, atlantoaxial distance, basion-dens interval, dens-to-axis length ratio (DALR), power ratio, and clivus canal angles were measured on CT or T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to define cutoff values in flexed (≥25°) and extended (<25°) head positions. RESULTS: Cutoff values for the VCI of ≥0.16 in extended and ≥0.2 in flexed head positions were diagnostic for AAI (sensitivity of 100% and 100%, specificity of 94.54% and 96.67%, respectively). Cutoff values for the other measurements were defined with a lower sensitivity (75%-96%) and specificity (70%-97%). A combination of the measurements did not increase the sensitivity and specificity compared with the VCI as single measurement. CONCLUSION: Cutoff values for several imaging measurements were established with good sensitivity and specificity. The VCI, defined as the ratio between the ventral and dorsal atlantodental interval, had the highest sensitivity and specificity in both head positions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of defined cutoff values allows an objective diagnosis of AAI in small-breed dogs. The decision for surgical intervention, however, should remain based on a combination of clinical and imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: Reports of osteoblastic tumours are limited to a few case reports in veterinary medicine. Osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma has been accepted by the World Health Organization as an intermediate form between an osteosarcoma and osteoblastoma. This type of tumour indicates an osteosarcoma, that may resemble osteoblastoma clinically, histologically, and radiologically and have the capability for metastasis. Osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma has not been described in veterinary medicine so far. CASE PRESENTATION: An eight-year old cat was presented due to progressive ataxia and paraparesis of the pelvic limbs. Imaging confirmed a well-defined, extradural mass originating from the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra (T2) leading to severe compression of the spinal cord. Decompressive cytoreduction was achieved by removal of the mass after dorsal laminectomy of T1. After recovering from an acute worsening 3.5 weeks after surgery, the cat had an improved neurological status and the dorsal compression was resolved at follow-up 8 months later. A focal contrast enhancing lesion was still evident at the base of T2 spinous process and lung metastasis was additionally suspected. Based on histopathological, radiographic, and clinical features, an "osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma" was suspected. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of this tumour in veterinary medicine. In addition, this case report highlights the difficulty in the diagnosis and definition of osseous neoplasia in cats and provides a literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a minimally invasive transilial vertebral (MTV) blocking procedure on the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the lumbosacral (L7/S1) junction of dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 59 client-owned dogs with DLSS. METHODS: Lumbosacral CT images were acquired with hyperextended pelvic limbs before and after MTV in all dogs. Clinical follow-up was obtained after 1 year, including a neurologic status classified in 4 grades, and if possible, CT. Morphometric measurements (Mean ± SEM) including foraminal area, endplate distance at L7/S1 and LS angle were obtained on sets of reformatted parasagittal and sagittal CT images. RESULTS: The mean foraminal area (ForL) increased from 32.5 ± 1.7 mm2 to 59.7 ± 1.9 mm2 on the left and from 31.1 ± 1.4 mm2 to 59.1 ± 2.0 mm2 on the right (ForR) side after MTV. The mean endplate distance (EDmd) between L7/S1 increased from 3.7 ± 0.1 mm to 6.0 ± 0.1 mm, and mean lumbosacral angle (LSa) from 148.0 ± 1.1° to 170.0 ± 1.1° after MTV. CT measurements were available 1 year postoperatively in 12 cases: ForL: 41.2 ± 3.1 mm2 ; ForR: 37.9 ± 3.1 mm2 ; EDmd: 4.3 ± 0.4 mm, and LSa 157.6 ± 2.1° (values are mean and standard error of mean = SEM). All 39 dogs with long-term follow-up improved by at least 1 neurologic grade, 9/39 improving by 3 grades, 15/39 by 2 grades, and 15/39 by 1 grade. CONCLUSIONS: MTV results in clinical improvement and morphometric enlargement of the foraminal area in dogs with variable degrees of foraminal stenosis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MTV may be a valuable minimally invasive option for treatment of dogs with DLSS.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical properties of a ventral transarticular lag screw fixation technique, a new dorsal atlantoaxial instability (AAI) clamp, and a new ventral AAI hook plate under sagittal shear loading after transection of the ligaments of the atlantoaxial joint. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric biomechanical study. ANIMALS: Canine cadavers (n = 10). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The occipitoatlantoaxial region of Beagles euthanatized for reasons unrelated to the study was prepared leaving only ligamentous structures and the joint capsules between the first 2 cervical vertebrae (C1 and C2). The atlanto-occipital joints were stabilized with 2 transarticular diverging positive threaded K-wires. The occipital bone and the caudal end of C2 were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate and loaded in shear to a force of 50 Newtons. The range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) of the atlantoaxial joint were determined after 3 loading cycles with atlantoaxial ligaments intact, after ligament transection, and after fixation with each implant. The testing order of implants was randomly assigned. The implants tested last were subjected to failure testing. RESULTS: All stabilization procedures decreased the ROM and NZ of the atlantoaxial joint compared to transected ligament specimens. Only stabilization with transarticular lag screws and ventral plates produced a significant reduction of ROM compare to intact specimens. CONCLUSION: Fixation with transarticular lag screws and a ventral hook plate was biomechanically similar and provided more rigidity compared to dorsal clamp fixation. Further load cycling to failure tests and clinical studies are required before making clinical recommendations.

OBJECTIVE: To assess intramedullary spinal pressure (IMP) in small breed dogs with thoracolumbar disk extrusion. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Small breed dogs (n = 14) with thoracolumbar disk extrusion undergoing hemilaminectomy and healthy chondrodystrophic laboratory dogs (control; n = 3) without spinal disease. METHODS: Diagnosis was based on clinical and neurological examinations and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and was confirmed intraoperatively. A standardized anesthesia protocol and surgical procedure were used to minimize factors that could influence IMP. Intramedullary pressure was measured through a minidurotomy at the site of spinal cord compression using a fiber optic catheter inserted perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the spinal cord. Measurements were taken after hemilaminectomy and again after removal of extruded disk material. RESULTS: Affected dogs had significantly higher IMP compared to control dogs (P = .008) and IMP decreased significantly post-decompression compared with initial values (P < .001). No correlation was found between IMP and neurologic grade, degree of spinal cord compression on MRI, or signal intensity changes on MRI. CONCLUSION: Acute thoracolumbar disk extrusion is associated with increased IMP in small breed dogs and surgical decompression results in an immediate decrease of IMP.

OBJECTIVES: To assess intrathecal pressure (ITP) in chondrodystrophic dogs with thoracolumbar disk extrusion. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Group 1: 11 chondrodystrophic dogs with thoracolumbar disk extrusion and present deep pain sensation. Group 2 (control): 3 healthy chondrodystrophic laboratory dogs without spinal disease. METHODS: Diagnosis was based on neurologic signs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and surgical confirmation. Blood pressure was maintained within physiologic range during anesthesia. A standardized surgical procedure was applied to minimize factors that could influence measurement readings. An extended hemilaminectomy was performed and ITP was measured with a fiber optic catheter. The catheter was inserted in the subarachnoid space 1 spinal segment caudal to the level of herniation and its tip was advanced to the site of compression. RESULTS: Significantly higher ITP occurred in chondrodystrophic dogs with acute thoracolumbar disk disease compared with controls. ITP was not associated with duration of clinical signs, neurologic status, outcome, degree of spinal cord compression, or signal intensity changes as assessed by MRI. CONCLUSION: Acute thoracolumbar disk disease leads to elevated ITP in chondrodystrophic dogs, which may contribute to increased compression of spinal cord parenchyma.

Although intervertebral disc herniation is a well-known disease in dogs, pain management for this condition has remained a challenge. The goal of the present study is to address the lack of information regarding the innervation of anatomical structures within the canine vertebral canal. Immunolabeling was performed with antibodies against protein gene product 9.5, Tuj-1 (neuron-specific class III ß-tubulin), calcitonin gene-related peptide, and neuropeptide Y in combination with the lectin from Lycopersicon esculentum as a marker for blood vessels. Staining was indicative of both sensory and sympathetic fibers. Innervation density was the highest in lateral areas, intermediate in dorsal areas, and the lowest in ventral areas. In the dorsal longitudinal ligament (DLL), the highest innervation density was observed in the lateral regions. Innervation was lower at mid-vertebral levels than at intervertebral levels. The presence of sensory and sympathetic fibers in the canine dura and DLL suggests that pain may originate from both these structures. Due to these regional differences in sensory innervation patterns, trauma to intervertebral DLL and lateral dura is expected to be particularly painful. The results ought to provide a better basis for the assessment of medicinal and surgical procedures.

Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative disease in dogs, often manifested as pain, joint swelling, and lameness. Despite the lack of scientific evidence for its treatment efficacy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is used in dogs as a pain-relieving treatment. This randomised single-blinded cross-over study investigated the effect of TENS on gait parameters in fifteen dogs with osteoarthritis. Stance time, swing time, stride time, stride length, peak vertical force (%BW), vertical impulse (%BW*sec), and symmetry indices were obtained using a pressure-sensitive mat. TENS treatment of 80 Hz and 100 µs with an individually selected amplitude was conducted for 45 min once daily for a treatment period of seven or ten days. No significant differences were seen between TENS and placebo for any of the gait parameters. Hence, in this study, TENS did not affect gait parameters, compared to placebo. Further studies are needed to confirm the observations.

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of spinal neuronavigation for plate fixation of lumbar vertebrae in miniature breed dogs using a surgical navigation system in combination with a custom-made reference array. STUDY DESIGN: This was an experimental cadaveric study in five miniature breed dogs. METHODS: A 4-hole locking plate with four 2.0-mm locking screws was placed on two adjacent lumbar vertebrae using a neuronavigation system consisting of a mobile cone beam computed tomography linked to a navigation system. The procedure was performed by a novice surgeon. The plate and screw positions were assessed for surgical safety using predefined criteria. Surgical accuracy was determined by the deviation of entry and exit points between pre- and postoperative images. RESULTS: A total of five plates and 20 screws were placed. In 85% (17/20), screws were placed appropriately. The median entry point deviation was 1.8 mm (range: 0.3-3.7) and the median exit point deviation was 1.6 mm (range: 0.6-5). CONCLUSION: Achievement of surgical accuracy in the placement of screws for fixation of lumbar vertebral plates in small breed dogs using neuronavigation with a custom-made reference array by a novice surgeon resulted in surgical safe plate placement in four of the five cadavers. Therefore, we judge the method as promising, however, further studies are necessary to allow the transfer of image-guided navigation for lumbar plate fixation into the clinic.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental porcine anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) model: a proof-of-concept study. OBJECTIVE: The effect of monetite synthetic bone graft (SBG) containing calcium pyrophosphate and ß-tricalcium phosphate on cervical spinal fusion in a noninstrumented two-level large animal model. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: ACDF is the gold standard surgical technique for the treatment of degenerative cervical spinal diseases. However, pseudarthrosis associated with increased patient morbidity occurs in ∼2.6% of the surgeries. SBG may enhance bony fusion and subsequently decrease the risk of pseudarthrosis. Recent studies on monetite-based SBGs for use in large cranial defects in humans have shown promising bone healing results, necessitating further investigation of their use in cervical spinal fusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four adult female Danish Göttingen minipigs received partial cervical anterior discectomy and intervertebral defects at an upper and lower level. One defect was filled with SBG, and the other was left empty. Bony fusion was evaluated using computed tomography (CT) at three-month intervals for 12 months. Fifteen months postsurgery, the animals were euthanized for further ex vivo qualitative histopathologic and micro-CT evaluations. Fusion rates were compared using the Fisher exact test at each time point. RESULTS: Increased interbody bony fusion rates were observed at SBG levels (4/4) compared with control levels (0/4) evaluated by CT at 6 and 9 months postsurgery ( P =0.029). Fusion was observed at all SBG levels 12 months postsurgery and at only one control level. Histopathologic evaluation confirmed high-quality interbody bony fusion at all SBG levels and fusion by spondylosis at one control level. CONCLUSION: This proof-of-concept study provides preliminary evidence of a novel, calcium pyrophosphate-containing, and ß-tricalcium phosphate-containing monetite SBG that promotes bony fusion compared with a negative control in a clinically relevant porcine model of ACDF.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate fixation properties of a new intervertebral anchored fusion device and compare these with ventral locking plate fixation. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical evaluation. ANIMALS: Cadaveric canine C4-C7 cervical spines (n = 9). METHODS: Cervical spines were nondestructively loaded with pure moments in a nonconstraining testing apparatus to induce flexion/extension while angular motion was measured. Range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) were calculated for (1) intact specimens, (2) specimens after discectomy and fixation with a purpose-built intervertebral fusion cage with integrated ventral fixation, and (3) after removal of the device and fixation with a ventral locking plate. RESULTS: Both fixation techniques resulted in a decrease in ROM and NZ (P < .001) compared with the intact segments. There were no significant differences between the anchored spacer and locking plate fixation. CONCLUSION: An anchored spacer appears to provide similar biomechanical stability to that of locking plate fixation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the most reliable insertion angle, corridor length and width to place a ventral transarticular atlantoaxial screw in miniature breed dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective CT imaging study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cervical CT scans of toy breed dogs (n = 21). METHODS: Dogs were divided into 2 groups--group 1: no atlantoaxial abnormalities; group 2: atlantoaxial instability. Insertion angle in medial to lateral and ventral to dorsal direction was measured in group 1. Corridor length and width were measured in groups 1 and 2. Corridor width was measured at 3 points of the corridor. Each variable was measured 3 times and the mean used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Mean ± SD optimal transarticular atlantoaxial insertion angle was determined to be 40 ± 1° in medial to lateral direction from the midline and 20 ± 1° in ventral to dorsal direction from the floor of the neural canal of C2. Mean corridor length was 7 mm (range, 4.5-8.0 mm). Significant correlation was found between corridor length, body weight, and age. Mean bone corridor width ranged from 3 to 5 mm. Statistically significant differences were found between individuals, gender and measured side. CONCLUSIONS: Optimal placement of a transarticular screw for atlantoaxial joint stabilization is very demanding because the screw path corridor is very narrow.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the stabilizing function of atlanto-axial ligaments in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric biomechanical study. ANIMALS: Beagle dog cadavers (n = 10). METHODS: The craniocervical region was collected from 10 Beagle cadavers, and the occipito-atlanto-axial region was prepared and freed from the surrounding muscles. Care was taken to preserve integrity of the atlantoaxial ligaments and atlantoaxial joint capsule. The atlanto-occipital joints were blocked with 2 diverging transarticular 1.8 mm positive threaded K-wires. Specimen extremities were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and mounted on a simulator testing shear load at the atlantoaxial joint. Range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) were determined with all ligaments intact, after cutting the apical ligament, both alar ligaments, the transverse ligaments and finally after cutting the dorsal atlantoaxial ligament. RESULTS: ROM increased similarly and stepwise during testing. The most significant increase was observed after transection of the alar ligaments. CONCLUSION: The alar ligaments seem to be the most important ligamentous structures for stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint under shear load.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a common diagnosis and well-investigated pathological condition in French Bulldogs with neurological deficiencies. However there is currently only one recently published retrospective descriptive study looking for recurrence rates of IVDD in French Bulldogs. Medical reports of French Bulldogs with a first episode of IVDD and surgical treatment were evaluated and reviewed for clinical signs of recurrence. Risk factors for Total-Recurrence, Cervical- and Thoracolumbar-Recurrence were evaluated by means of logistic regression models. The aim of this study was to assess frequency and risk factors associated with the recurrence of IVDD in French Bulldogs. RESULTS: One hundred twenty-seven French Bulldogs with a first episode of IVDD and surgical treatment were evaluated. 52.7% (67/127) of these patients showed signs of recurrence. The recurrence rate in the cervical spine was slightly lower (47%) compared to the thoracolumbar spine (56.6%). A significant association with recurrence could be found for the factor age: French Bulldogs with a first episode of IVDD ≤ 3 years seem to be prone for Total-Recurrence (P = 0.002) and Cervical-Recurrence (with ORs ranging from 0.02 to 0.03 for patients older than 3 years). 50% of the recurrences (median) occurred within the first 12 month after the first episode of IVDD. CONCLUSIONS: Recurrence of IVDD can be expected in more than half of French Bulldogs affected by IVDD. Especially young French Bulldogs are prone for recurrence in cervical spine. Almost every fourth patient with IVDD suffers from a recurrence within 12 months. Future dog owners should be informed about the risk of IVDD and the early onset of recurrences in French Bulldogs.

Objective: To report surgical site infections (SSI) after Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), treatment course, associated risk factors, bacterial isolates and antimicrobial resistance. Study design: Retrospective clinical cohort study. Study population: Six hundred and twenty seven dogs and 769 TPLO procedures. Methods: Data from electronic medical records of dogs undergoing TPLO between 2005 and 2015 at a single institution have been retrospectively reviewed. A generalized mixed logistic regression was used to determine possible risk factors. The Chi-Square test of independence was used to examine the relationship between the isolation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and the development of major infections undergoing additional surgical treatment. To assess the correlation between number of SSI and number MDR isolate per year, Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. Results: The overall complication rate was 19.3% (n = 149). SSI was most frequent with 8.5% (n = 65). Major SSI occurred in 6.8% (n = 52) TPLO (80.0% SSI). Staphylococcus (S.) pseudintermedius (n = 37) and S. aureus (n = 10) were most frequently isolated. Multidrug-resistant bacteria were identified in 2.7% (n = 21) TPLO (32.3% SSI) but were not associated with major SSI (p = 0.426). There was a strong positive correlation between number of MDR isolates per year and number of SSI per year [r (9) = 0.79, p = 0.004]. Factors associated with SSI were previous TPLO in the contralateral stifle (p = 0.02, OR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.11-3.64) and German Shepherd dogs (p = 0.035, OR = 4.41, 95% CI = 1.11-17.54). The use of non-locking implants was found to be protective (p = 0.02, OR = 0.179, 95% CI = 0.18-0.77). Clinical significance: Infection with multidrug-resistant bacteria is an emerging problem in veterinary practice and treatment is challenging. The incidence of major SSI was found to be high but was not associated with the isolation of MDR bacteria.

The feasibility of a newly developed augmentation of ventral fixation technique for surgical stabilization of atlantoaxial instability was clinically evaluated in a cohort of eleven dogs, and long-term clinical outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. The new technique combines wire/suture fixation through a transverse hole in the axis anchored by two screws placed in the alae atlantis or at the cranial end of plates used to bridge the atlantoaxial joint ventrally. A previous biomechanical study demonstrated good stability of this technique during shear loading, comparable to the stability achieved with other standard techniques. Ten dogs improved clinically after surgery and returned to a normal life within 3-6 months of surgery. One dog developed aphonia, dysphagia, and died of aspiration pneumonia three days after surgery. The augmentation of conventional ventral atlantoaxial fixation with the transverse bony corridor of the proximal axis body may be a valuable way to enhance stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint.

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan parasite that causes abortion and stillbirth in cattle. We employed the pregnant neosporosis mouse model to investigate the efficacy of a modified version of the attenuated Listeria monocytogenes vaccine vector Lm3Dx_NcSAG1, which expresses the major N. caninum surface antigen SAG1. Multivalent vaccines were generated by the insertion of gra7 and/or rop2 genes into Lm3Dx_NcSAG1, resulting in the double mutants, Lm3Dx_NcSAG1_NcGRA7 and Lm3Dx_NcSAG1_NcROP2, and the triple mutant, Lm3Dx_NcSAG1_NcGRA7_NcROP2. Six experimental groups of female BALB/c mice were inoculated intramuscularly three times at two-week intervals with 1 × 107 CFU of the respective vaccine strains. Seven days post-mating, mice were challenged by the subcutaneous injection of 1 × 105N. caninum NcSpain-7 tachyzoites. Non-pregnant mice, dams and their offspring were observed daily until day 25 post-partum. Immunization with Lm3Dx_NcSAG1 and Lm3Dx_NcSAG1_NcGRA7_NcROP2 resulted in 70% postnatal pup survival, whereas only 50% and 58% of pups survived in the double mutant-vaccinated groups. Almost all pups had died at the end of the experiment in the infection control. The triple mutant was the most promising vaccine candidate, providing the highest rate of protection against vertical transmission (65%) and CNS infection. Overall, integrating multiple antigens into Lm3Dx_SAG1 resulted in lower vertical transmission and enhanced protection against cerebral infection in dams and in non-pregnant mice.

In this proof-of-concept, bone neoformation beyond the skeletal envelope is explored by using a collagen pouch (n= 6) packed with calcium phosphate (CaP) granules placed over the frontal bone in sheep (n= 3). At 13 weeks, macroscopic examination showed specimens covered by an adherent fibrinous envelope with slight vascularization. Histology revealed colonization of the implant by newly formed woven bone and fibrous connective tissue. Surface osteoblasts as well as material-filled macrophages, lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear cells and giant cells were also found in large quantities surrounding the newly formed bone tissue inside the collagen pouch. On the side facing the recipient bone, the collagen membrane had to a large extent been resorbed and bridging bone formation was clearly visible between the test article and recipient bone. On the other side facing soft tissue, the collagen pouch remained intact with a visible fibrous capsule. This study demonstrated that the use of a collagen sleeve as a container for CaP granules allows for good neoformation beyond the skeletal envelope with bridging bone formation clearly visible between the test article and recipient bone. Additionally, in this model, macrophages rather than osteoclasts appear to modulate CaP granule resorption and remodeling into new bone. This construct opens new perspectives for treatment methods that could be used for bone augmentation and restoration of cranio-maxillofacial defects and malformations.

OBJECTIVES: To assess influence of durotomy on spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) in chondrodystrophic dogs with thoracolumbar disk extrusion. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Chondrodystrophic dogs with thoracolumbar disk extrusion (n = 11). METHODS: Diagnosis was based on neurologic signs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and surgical confirmation. Regional SCBF was measured 3 times intraoperatively by laser-Doppler flowmetry: (1) before surgical decompression; (2) immediately after decompression by hemilaminectomy-durotomy; and (3) after 15 minutes of lesion lavage. A standardized hemilaminectomy and durotomy performed by the same neurosurgeon, was used to minimize factors that could influence measurement readings. RESULTS: A significant increase in intraoperative SCBF was found immediately after spinal cord decompression and durotomy in dogs but SCBF returned to previous levels or lower after 15 minutes of lavage. Changes in SCBF were not associated with duration of clinical signs; neurologic status, degree of spinal cord compression, or signal intensity changes as assessed by MRI. CONCLUSION: Durotomy does not increase SCBF in dogs with disk extrusion associated spinal cord compression.

BACKGROUND: Congenital vertebral body malformations (CVBMs) have retrospectively been investigated in British and American canine populations. This study prospectively evaluates occurrence, localization, type and characteristic of CVBM along the entire vertebral column in a cohort of French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs and Pug dogs from Germany. METHODS: Prospective clinical and radiological screenings for CVBM were performed in brachycephalic dogs presented for reasons unrelated to neurological problems. Neurological and orthopaedic examinations as well as radiographs in two orthogonal planes of the entire vertebral column including the tail were performed in all dogs. Cobb angle and vertebral step were determined. Associations between CVBM, tail malformation, neurological deficits and occurrence of concurrent orthopaedic diseases were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 707 VBMs were identified in the whole vertebral column of 169 of 265 brachycephalic dogs. The most common types of CVBMs were ventral wedge shape (48%), dorsal wedge shape (14%) and shortened vertebral body (14%). A new type of malformation was investigated: dorsal wedge shape vertebrae. There was significant association between severe tail malformations with CVBM. Neurological deficits were significantly associated with ventrolateral wedge shape, dorso lateral hemivertebrae, Cobb angle > 30% and vertebral step ≥1.75 mm. Orthopaedic conditions were not significantly associated with CVBM. CONCLUSION: Kyphotic Cobb angle and vertebral step are radiological findings associated with neurological deficits. We propose severe tail malformation as an easy and accurate selection factor for determining breeding dogs.
