RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity refers to a broad range of health traits, including the physiological and psychological changes brought on by aging. Previous research has shown that intrinsic capacity, as an independent emerging construct, is a highly effective predictor of several health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to summarise the predictive effect of intrinsic capacity at baseline on health outcomes among middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: We systematically searched up to 3 April 2024 in 10 electronic databases. Studies investigating the predictive effect of baseline composite intrinsic capacity and health outcomes were included. Publications that had reported hazard ratios (HRs) or odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as effect size were considered. RESULTS: A total of 23 publications were included. The sample size ranged from 100 to 17 031. The results of the meta-analysis showed statistically significant prediction of adverse health outcomes such as disability (OR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.68-2.03, I2 = 41%, Pheterogeneity=.10), falls (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.19-1.60, I2 = 45%, Pheterogeneity=.11), hospitalisation (OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.17-4.3, I2 = 68%, Pheterogeneity=.08), mortality (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.54-1.91, I2 = 32%, Pheterogeneity=.12) and frailty (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.45-1.70, I2 = 2%, Pheterogeneity=.31) by the baseline composite intrinsic capacity. CONCLUSIONS: Declined intrinsic capacity has potential predictive value for adverse health outcomes, further high-quality study is needed to validate these findings and strengthen their cumulative impact. Attention to health outcomes should also focus on both breadth and category precision.

RESUMEN

Zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs), a class of the metal organic framework, have been extensively studied in environmental applications. However, their environmental fate and potential ecological impact on plants remain unknown. Here, we investigated the phytotoxicity, transformation, and bioaccumulation processes of two typical ZIFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under hydroponic conditions. ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 in the concentration of 50 mg/L decreased root and shoot dry weight maximally by 55.2% and 27.5%, 53.5% and 37.5%, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that ZIFs on the root surface gradually collapsed and transformed into nanosheets with increasing cultivation time. The fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled ZIFs were applied to trace the uptake and translocation of ZIFs in rice. The results demonstrated that the transformed ZIFs were mainly distributed in the intercellular spaces of rice root, while they cannot be transported to culms and leaves. Even so, the Co and Zn contents of rice roots and shoots in the ZIFs treated groups were increased by 1145% and 1259%, 145% and 259%, respectively, compared with the control groups. These findings suggested that the phytotoxicity of ZIFs are primarily attributed to the transformed ZIFs and to a less extent, the metal ions and their ligands, and they were internalized by rice root and increased the Co and Zn contents of shoots. This study reported the transformation of ZIFs and their biological effectiveness in rice, highlighting the potential environmental hazards and risks of ZIFs to crop plants.

RESUMEN

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a serious threat to plant growth and yield. Nanomaterials have shown great application potential for alleviation of Cd toxicity to plants. In this study, we applied graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4 NSs) for alleviation of Cd-toxicity to soybean (Glycine max L.). The g-C3N4 NSs supplementation significantly improved plant growth and reduced oxidative damage in the Cd-toxicated soybean seedlings through hydroponic culture. Particularly, the g-C3N4 NSs dynamically regulated the root cell wall (RCW) components by increasing pectin content and modifying its demethylation via enhancing pectin methylesterase (PME) activity, therefore greatly enhanced stronger RCW-Cd retention (up to 82.8%) and reduced Cd migration to the shoot. Additionally, the g-C3N4 NSs reversed the Cd-induced chlorosis, increased photosynthetic efficiency because of enhancement in Fv/Fm ration, Y(II) and sugars content. These results provide new insights into the alleviation of Cd toxicity to plants by g-C3N4 NSs, and shed light on the application of low-cost and environmental-friendly carbon-based NMs for alleviating heavy metal toxicity to plants.

RESUMEN

The development of highly luminescent two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for sensing applications remains challenging. To suppress commonly observed photoluminescence quenching of COFs, we propose a strategy involving interrupting the intralayer conjugation and interlayer interactions using cyclohexane as the linker unit. By variation of the building block structures, imine-bonded COFs with various topologies and porosities are obtained. Experimental and theoretical analyses of these COFs disclose high crystallinity and large interlayer distances, demonstrating enhanced emission with record-high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 57% in the solid state. The resulting cyclohexane-linked COF also exhibits excellent sensing performance for the trace recognition of Fe3+ ions, explosive and toxic picric acid, and phenyl glyoxylic acid as metabolites. These findings inspire a facile and general strategy to develop highly emissive imine-bonded COFs for detecting various molecules.

RESUMEN

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a global health problem with serious consequences for both individuals and society. Previous studies on abnormal anatomical patterns in CUD have mainly used voxel-based morphometry to investigate grey matter volume changes, while surface-based morphometry (SBM) has been found to provide detail information on cortical thickness (CT), surface area and cortical meancurve, which can contribute to a better understanding of structural brain changes associated with CUD. In this study, SBM was conducted to investigate abnormal neuroanatomical patterns in CUD and whether these abnormal patterns could be used as potential diagnostic biomarkers for CUD. Sixty-eight CUD individuals and 52 matched healthy controls were enrolled, and all participants performed once MRI scanning and clinical assessments. We found that CUD individuals exhibited altered morphological indicators across widespread brain regions and these abnormal anatomical alterations were significantly predictive of CUD status. Furthermore, the CT reduction of right insula was significantly associated with years of cocaine use in CUD. These findings revealed the association of abnormal anatomical patterns in specific brain regions in CUD, which further improve the understanding of CUD pathophysiology and provide the alternative diagnostic biomarkers for CUD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Neuroanatomical alterations have been associated with cognitive deficits in mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). However, most studies have focused on the abnormal gray matter volume in widespread brain regions using a cross-sectional design in MTBI. This study investigated the neuroanatomical restoration of key regions in salience network and the outcomes in MTBI. METHODS: Thirty-six MTBI patients with posttraumatic headache (PTH) and 34 matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging scans and were assessed with clinical measures during the acute and subacute phases. Surface-based morphometry was conducted to get cortical thickness (CT) and cortical surface area (CSA) of neuroanatomical regions which were defined by the Desikan atlas. Then mixed analysis of variance models were performed to examine CT and CSA restoration in patients from acute to subacute phase related to controls. Finally, mediation effects models were built to explore the relationships between neuroanatomical restoration and symptomatic improvement in patients. RESULTS: MTBI patients with PTH showed reduced headache impact and improved cognitive function from the acute to subacute phase. Moreover, patients experienced restoration of CT of the left caudal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and left insula and cortical surface area of the right superior frontal gyrus from acute to subacute phase. Further mediation analysis found that CT restoration of the ACC and insula mediated the relationship between reduced headache impact and improved cognitive function in patients. CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that neuroanatomical restoration of key regions in salience network correlated reduced headache impact with cognitive function improvement in MTBI with PTH, which further substantiated the vital role of salience network and provided an alternative clinical target for cognitive improvement in MTBI patients with PTH.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It is widely acknowledged that mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) leads to either functionally or anatomically abnormal brain regions. Structural covariance networks (SCNs) that depict coordinated regional maturation patterns are commonly employed for investigating brain structural abnormalities. However, the dynamic nature of SCNs in individuals with MTBI who suffer from posttraumatic headache (PTH) and their potential as biomarkers have hitherto not been investigated. METHODS: This study included 36 MTBI patients with PTH and 34 well-matched healthy controls (HCs). All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging scans and were assessed with clinical measures during the acute and subacute phases. Structural covariance matrices of cortical thickness were generated for each group, and global as well as nodal network measures of SCNs were computed. RESULTS: MTBI patients with PTH demonstrated reduced headache impact and improved cognitive function from the acute to subacute phase. In terms of global network metrics, MTBI patients exhibited an abnormal normalized clustering coefficient compared to HCs during the acute phase, although no significant difference in the normalized clustering coefficient was observed between the groups during the subacute phase. Regarding nodal network metrics, MTBI patients displayed alterations in various brain regions from the acute to subacute phase, primarily concentrated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the cortical thickness topography in the PFC determines the typical structural-covariance topology of the brain and may serve as an important biomarker for MTBI patients with PTH.
