Water logging is one of the most detrimental phenomena continuing to burden Dhaka dwellers. This study aims to spatio-temporarily identify the water logging hazard zones within Dhaka Metropolitan area and assess the extent of their water logging susceptibility based on informal settlements, built-up areas, and demographical characteristics. The study utilizes integrated geographic information system (GIS)-remote sensing (RS) methods, using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Water and Moisture Index, distance buffer zone from drainage streams, and built-up distributions to identify waterlogged zones with a temporal extent, incorporating social and infrastructural attributes to evaluate water logging effects. These indicators were integrated into an overlay GIS method to measure the vulnerability level across Dhaka city areas. The findings reveal that south and south-western parts of Dhaka were more susceptible to water logging hazards. Almost 35% of Dhaka belongs to the high/very highly vulnerable zone. Greater number of slum households were found within high to very high water logging vulnerable zones and approximately 70% of them are poorly structured. The built-up areas were observed to be increased toward the northern part of Dhaka and were exposed to severe water logging issues. The overall findings reveal the spatio-temporal distribution of the water logging vulnerabilities across the city as well as its impact on the social indicators. An integrated approach is necessary for future development plans to mitigate the risk of water logging.

Oral cancer (OC) is a serious health concern that has a high fatality rate. The oral cavity has seven kinds of OC, including the lip, tongue, and floor of the mouth, as well as the buccal, hard palate, alveolar, retromolar trigone, and soft palate. The goal of this study is to look into new biomarkers and important pathways that might be used as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic candidates in OC. The publicly available repository the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) was to the source for the collection of OC-related datasets. GSE74530, GSE23558, and GSE3524 microarray datasets were collected for analysis. Minimum cut-off criteria of |log fold-change (FC)| > 1 and adjusted p < 0.05 were applied to calculate the upregulated and downregulated differential expression genes (DEGs) from the three datasets. After that only common DEGs in all three datasets were collected to apply further analysis. Gene ontology (GO) and pathway analysis were implemented to explore the functional behaviors of DEGs. Then protein−protein interaction (PPI) networks were built to identify the most active genes, and a clustering algorithm was also implemented to identify complex parts of PPI. TF-miRNA networks were also constructed to study OC-associated DEGs in-depth. Finally, top gene performers from PPI networks were used to apply drug signature analysis. After applying filtration and cut-off criteria, 2508, 3377, and 670 DEGs were found for GSE74530, GSE23558, and GSE3524 respectively, and 166 common DEGs were found in every dataset. The GO annotation remarks that most of the DEGs were associated with the terms of type I interferon signaling pathway. The pathways of KEGG reported that the common DEGs are related to the cell cycle and influenza A. The PPI network holds 88 nodes and 492 edges, and CDC6 had the highest number of connections. Four clusters were identified from the PPI. Drug signatures doxorubicin and resveratrol showed high significance according to the hub genes. We anticipate that our bioinformatics research will aid in the definition of OC pathophysiology and the development of new therapies for OC.

BACKGROUND: Responsiveness of Physicians (ROP) is defined as the social actions by physicians aimed at meeting the legitimate expectations of healthcare users. Even though patients' expectations regarding ROP have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, the psychometrically-validated ROP-Scale is difficult to apply in hospital settings. The goal of this study is to validate the existing ROP-Scale to measure the responsiveness of hospital physicians during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional phone survey involving 213 COVID-19 hospital patients, randomly selected from the government database. We applied the Delphi method for content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses for construct validity, Cronbach's alpha and corrected item-total correlation for internal consistency reliability, and Pearson's correlation between the scale and overall patient satisfaction for concurrent validity. RESULTS: After removing survey items based on data sufficiency, collinearity, factor loading derived through exploratory factor analysis, and internal consistency, the final version of the COVID-19 ROP-Scale consisted of 7 items, grouped under Informativeness, Trustworthiness and Courteousness domains. The confirmatory factor analysis supported the three domains with acceptable model fit [Root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.028, Comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.997, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.994)]. The corrected item-total correlation ranged between 0.45 and 0.71. Concurrent validity was ascertained by the high correlation (0.84) between patient satisfaction and the COVID-19 ROP-Scale. Based on the mean domain score, the highest- and the lowest-scoring responsiveness domains were 'Trustworthiness' (7.85) and 'Informativeness' (7.28), respectively, whereas the highest- and the lowest-scoring items were 'Not being involved in illegal activities' (7.97), and 'Service-oriented, not business-like attitude' (6.63), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The 7-item COVID-19 ROP-Scale was demonstrated to be feasible, valid, and internally consistent. Therefore, its application can help amend past mistakes in health service provision and improve care for the hospitalised COVID-19 patients or other patients suffering from similar conditions. This study can contribute to the national decision-making regarding hospital care, open up further avenues in the health policy and system research, and eventually improve the quality of care provided to Bangladeshi patients seeking hospital services. Moreover, findings yielded by this study can be incorporated into doctors' medical education and in-service training.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities comprise more than one billion people in the world, yet they are one of the most discriminated groups and face significant health disparities. Particularly in developing countries, which contain 80% of the entire population with disabilities, these individuals experience major barriers in accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Education is an important factor that greatly affects individuals' SRH service utilization. Hence, we sought to investigate the relationship between education and SRH service utilization for persons with disabilities in Bangladesh. METHODS: Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, a total of 5000 persons with disabilities were surveyed for the quantitative component and 15 mini-ethnographic case studies were conducted with persons with disabilities for the qualitative component. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression analyses were performed on the survey data, while the qualitative interviews were coded and their SRH themes synthesized accordingly. RESULTS: Our quantitative findings show that education statistically significantly increases persons with disabilities' SRH service utilization of antenatal care, delivery care, postnatal care, and family planning (P < 0.05). Interestingly, for persons with disabilities, primary education shows increased adjusted odds of family planning use but is likely not enough to increase antenatal care, delivery care, or postnatal care use; secondary or post-secondary education may be required to improve utilization of these latter services. Qualitative findings support the association between higher education levels and greater SRH service use. Persons with disabilities of lower educational attainment held misinformation and distrust in SRH services and experienced mistreatment by SRH healthcare providers, discouraging them from seeking future SRH services. CONCLUSIONS: We report that higher formal education level is associated with greater SRH service use for persons with disabilities in Bangladesh. Formally educating persons with disabilities expands their SRH knowledge and familiarity with SRH services, as well as leads to more economic opportunities so they can afford SRH services. Increasing formal education levels for persons with disabilities, paired with integrating comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in their schools, will likely help close the gap in SRH health disparities for this vulnerable population.


Out of more than one billion persons with disabilities in the world, 80% of them live in developing countries. Persons with disabilities commonly face discrimination and health disparities, particularly experiencing major barriers in accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Education is a key factor that often leads to social and economic empowerment, which positively contributes towards individuals' SRH service utilization. In this paper, we examined the relationship between education and SRH service utilization for persons with disabilities in Bangladesh. We surveyed persons with disabilities across all of Bangladesh on their utilization of SRH services and conducted mini-ethnographic case studies with selected participants to more deeply understand their SRH issues and SRH service utilization. Our survey findings show that education significantly increases persons with disabilities' SRH service utilization of antenatal care, delivery care, postnatal care, and family planning in Bangladesh. Interestingly, for persons with disabilities, primary education may only be able to increase family planning use while secondary or post-secondary education may be required to increase antenatal care, delivery care, and postnatal care use. Our qualitative findings support the association between higher education levels and greater SRH service use. Persons with disabilities of higher education prioritized obtaining formal SRH services from qualified health care providers, even when financially constrained, while lower educated participants tended to be misinformed and distrustful of formal SRH services. We recommend helping persons with disabilities attain higher formal education levels and including comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in their schools, as it likely will reduce SRH health disparities for this vulnerable group.

BACKGROUND: Reliable and rigorously collected sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (SRMNCAH) data in humanitarian settings is often sparse and varies in quality across different humanitarian settings. To address this gap in quality data, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed a core set of indicators for monitoring and evaluating SRMNCAH services and outcomes, and assessed their feasibility in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Jordan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. METHODS: The feasibility assessments aggregated information from global consultations and field-level assessments to reach a consensus on a set of core SRMNCAH indicators among WHO partners. The feasibility assessment in Bangladesh focused on the following constructs: relevance/usefulness of the core set of indicators, the feasibility of measurement, availability of systems and resources, and ethical issues during data collection and management. The field-level multi-methods assessment included five components; a desk review, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and facility assessments including observations of facility-level data management. RESULTS: The findings suggest that there is widespread support among stakeholders for developing a standardized core set of SRMNCAH indicators to be collected among all humanitarian actors in Bangladesh. There are numerous resources and data collection systems that could be leveraged, built upon, and improved to ensure the feasibility of collecting this proposed set of indicators. However, the data collection load requested from donors, the national government, international and UN agencies, coordination/cluster systems must be better harmonized, standardized, and less burdensome. CONCLUSION: This core set of indicators would only be useful if it has the buy-in from the international community that results in harmonizing and coordinating data collection efforts and relevant indicators' reporting requirements.

In this study, I constitute a search based COVID-19 sentiment index using Google search volume. I develop an alternative Scared COVID-19 Attitude Revealed by Eager Search (SCARES) index using the household search volume i.e. "coronavirus pandemic", "coronavirus epidemic", and "coronavirus outbreak" of United States (US) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using daily data from May 1, 2020 to July 30, 2021, I find that SCARES index negatively explains stock market return and subsequent return reversals, implying that households' increased pandemic sentiment negatively affects equity market return. Furthermore, decile regressions on characteristics-sorted portfolio returns show that SCARES index predicts the return reversals of firms that are small, less profitable, and with low investment. I also report that COVID-19 search shocks of households do not significantly predict any of the Fama-French five-factors except SMB (small-minus-big). Moreover, I use two state Markov switching model and find that structural breaks associated with pandemic phases make SCARES positively related to indices i.e. twitter based uncertainty, volatility index, economic policy uncertainty, and business condition in high volatility regime. Finally, sub-period analysis reports that, in stock market context, people start to react slowly and become relatively less responsive to the COVID-19 search keywords. The findings of this paper can assist key stakeholders in the market to carefully analyze the asset return pattern during pandemic regimes.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are unique derivatives of graphene that show promise in multiple biomedical applications as biosensors, bioimaging agents, and drug/gene delivery vehicles. Their ease in functionalization, biocompatibility, and intrinsic fluorescence enable those modalities. However, GQDs lack deep tissue magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capabilities desirable for diagnostics. Considering that the drawbacks of MRI contrast agent toxicity are still poorly addressed, we develop novel Mn2+ or Gd3+ doped nitrogen-containing graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) to equip the GQDs with MRI capabilities and at the same time render contrast agents biocompatible. Water-soluble biocompatible Mn-NGQDs and Gd-NGQDs synthesized via single-step microwave-assisted scalable hydrothermal reaction enable dual MRI and fluorescence modalities. These quasi-spherical 3.9-6.6 nm average-sized structures possess highly crystalline graphitic lattice structure with 0.24 and 0.53 atomic % for Mn2+ and Gd3+ doping. This structure ensures high in vitro biocompatibility of up to 1.3 mg ml-1 and 1.5 mg ml-1 for Mn-NGQDs and Gd-NGQDs, respectively, and effective internalization in HEK-293 cells traced by intrinsic NGQD fluorescence. As MRI contrast agents with considerably low Gd and Mn content, Mn-NGQDs exhibit substantial transverse/longitudinal relaxivity (r 2/r 1) ratios of 11.190, showing potential as dual-mode longitudinal or transverse relaxation time (T 1 or T 2) contrast agents, while Gd-NGQDs possess r 2/r 1 of 1.148 with high r 1 of 9.546 mM-1 s-1 compared to commercial contrast agents, suggesting their potential as T1 contrast agents. Compared to other nanoplatforms, these novel Mn2+ and Gd3+ doped NGQDs not only provide scalable biocompatible alternatives as T1/T2 and T1 contrast agents but also enable in vitro intrinsic fluorescence imaging.

This work develops a new multifunctional biocompatible anticancer nanoformulation to provide targeted image-guided cancer-selective therapeutics. It consists of three active covalently bound components: (1) biocompatible nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a multifunctional delivery and imaging platform, (2) hyaluronic acid (HA) unit targeted to the CD44 receptors on a variety of cancer cells, and (3) oxidative stress-based cancer-selective ferrocene (Fc) therapeutic. The biocompatible GQD platform synthesized from glucosamine exhibits high-yield intrinsic fluorescence. It is utilized for tracking Fc-GQD-HA formulation in vitro indicating internalization enhancement in HeLa cells targeted by the HA over non-cancer HEK-293 cells not overexpressing CD44 receptor. Fc-GQD-HA, non-toxic at 1 mg/mL to HEK-293 cells, induces cytotoxic response in HeLa enhanced over time, while therapeutic ROS generation by Fc-GQD-HA is ~3 times greater than that of Fc alone. This outlines the targeted delivery, imaging, and cancer-specific treatment capabilities of the new Fc-GQD-HA formulation enabling desired cancer-focused nanotherapeutic approach.

The impact of Covid-19 on surgical patients worldwide has been substantial. In the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Ireland (RoI), the first wave of the pandemic occurred in March 2020. The aims of this study were to: (1) evaluate the volume of neurosurgical operative activity levels, Covid-19 infection rate and mortality rate in April 2020 with a retrospective cross-sectional cohort study conducted across 16 UK and RoI neurosurgical centres, and (2) compare patient outcomes in a single institution in April-June 2020 with a comparative cohort in 2019. Across the UK and RoI, 818 patients were included. There were 594 emergency and 224 elective operations. The incidence rate of Covid-19 infection was 2.6% (21/818). The overall mortality rate in patients with a Covid-19 infection was 28.6% (6/21). In the single centre cohort analysis, an overall reduction in neurosurgical operative activity by 65% was observed between 2020 (n = 304) and 2019 (n = 868). The current and future impact on UK neurosurgical operative activity has implications for service delivery and neurosurgical training.

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in the spatial clustering of malnutrition in children under 5 years of age (under-5s) for the period 1999 to 2011 in Bangladesh. DESIGN: We used data from four nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 1999-2000, 2004, 2007 and 2011 in Bangladesh involving a total of 24 211 under-5s located in 1661 primary sampling units (PSU; geographical unit of analysis) throughout Bangladesh. The prevalence of stunting (height/length-for-age Z-score <-2), underweight (weight-for-age Z-score <-2) and wasting (weight-for-height/length Z-score <-2) at each PSU site and for each survey year were estimated based on the WHO child growth standard. The extent of spatial clustering was quantified using semivariograms. SETTING: Whole of Bangladesh. SUBJECTS: Children under 5 years of age. RESULTS: Our results demonstrate that in 1999-2000 most PSU throughout Bangladesh experienced stunting, underweight and wasting prevalence which exceeded the WHO thresholds. By 2011, this situation improved, although in two of the six divisions (Barisal and Sylhet) PSU still exhibited higher levels of malnutrition compared with other divisions of the country. The pattern of spatial clustering for stunting, underweight and wasting also changed between 1999 and 2011 both at national and sub-national (division) levels. CONCLUSIONS: We identified divisions where malnutrition indicators (stunting, underweight and wasting) remain highly clustered and other divisions where they are more widely spread in Bangladesh. This has important implications on how interventions for malnutrition need to be delivered (geographically targeted interventions v. random interventions) within each division of the country.

Graphene possesses a number of advantageous properties, however, does not exhibit optical emission, which limits its use in optoelectronics. Unlike graphene, its functional derivative, graphene oxide (GO) exhibits fluorescence emission throughout the visible. Here, we focus on controlled methods for tuning the optical properties of GO. We introduce ozone treatment of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in order to controllably transform it from non-emissive graphene-like material into GO with a specific fluorescence emission response. Solution-based treatment of RGO for 5-45 min with ∼1.2 g l-1 ozone/oxygen gas mixture yields a drastic color change, bleaching of the absorption in the visible and the stepwise increase in fluorescence intensity and lifetime. This is attributed to the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups to RGO graphitic platform as detected by the infrared spectroscopy. A reverse process: controllable quenching of this fluorescence is achieved by the thermal treatment of GO in aqueous suspension up to 90 °C. This methodology allows for the wide range alteration of GO optical properties starting from the dark-colored non-emissive RGO material up to nearly transparent highly ozone-oxidized GO showing substantial fluorescence emission. The size of the GO flakes is concomitantly altered by oxidation-induced scission. Semi-empirical PM3 theoretical calculations on HyperChem models are utilized to explore the origins of optical response from GO. Two models are considered, attributing the induced emission either to the localized states produced by oxygen-containing addends or the islands of graphitic carbon enclosed by such addends. Band gap values calculated from the models are in the agreement with experimentally observed transition peak maxima. The controllable variation of GO optical properties in aqueous suspension by ozone and thermal treatments shown in this work provides a route to tune its optical response for particular optoelectronics or biomedical applications.

Malnutrition in children under 5 years of age (U5s) is a serious public health problem in low- and middle-income countries including Bangladesh. Improved maternal education can contribute effectively to reduce child malnutrition. We examined the long-term impact of maternal education on the risk of malnutrition in U5s and quantified the level of education required for the mothers to reduce the risk. We used pooled data from five nationwide demographic and health surveys conducted in 1996-1997, 1999-2000, 2004, 2007 and 2011 in Bangladesh involving 28 941 U5s. A log-binomial regression model was used to examine the association between maternal education (no education, primary, secondary or more) and malnutrition in children, measured by stunting, underweight and wasting controlling for survey time, maternal age, maternal body mass index, maternal working status, parity, paternal education and wealth quintile. An overall improvement in maternal educational attainment was observed between 1996 and 2011. The prevalence of malnutrition although decreasing was consistently high among children of mothers with lower education compared with those of mothers with higher education. In adjusted models incorporating time effects, children of mothers with secondary or higher education were at lower risk of childhood stunting [risk ratio (RR): 0.86, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.81, 0.89], underweight (RR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.78, 0.88) and wasting (RR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74, 0.91) compared with children of mothers with no education. We demonstrated the importance of promoting women's education at least up to the secondary level as a means to tackle malnutrition in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the average annual rates of reduction of stunting, underweight and wasting for the period 1996 to 2011, and to evaluate whether Bangladesh will be expected to achieve the target of Millennium Development Goal 1C of reducing the prevalence of underweight by half by 2015. DESIGN: We used five nationwide, cross-sectional, Demographic and Health Survey data sets to estimate prevalence of undernutrition defined by stunting, underweight and wasting among children under 5 years of age using the WHO child growth standards. We then computed the average annual rates of reduction of prevalence of undernutrition using the formula derived by UNICEF. Finally, we projected the prevalence of undernutrition for the year 2015 using the estimated average annual rates of reduction. SETTING: Nationwide covering Bangladesh. SUBJECTS: Children under 5 years of age (n 28,941). RESULTS: The prevalence of stunting decreased by 18.8% (from 60.0% to 41.2%), underweight by 16.0% (from 52.2% to 36.2%) and wasting by 5.1% (from 20.6% to 15.5%) during 1996 to 2011. The overall average annual rates of reduction were 2.84%, 2.69 % and 2.47%, respectively, for stunting, underweight and wasting. We forecast that in 2015, the prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting will be 36.7%, 32.5% and 14.0%, respectively, at the national level. The prevalence of undernutrition is likely to remain high in rural areas, in the Sylhet division and in the poorest wealth quintile. CONCLUSIONS: Bangladesh is likely to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 1C target of reducing the prevalence of underweight by half by 2015. However, it is falling behind in reducing stunting and further investment is needed to reduce individual, household and environmental determinants of stunting in Bangladesh.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibilities of the junction-less double-gate (JLDG) MOSFET structure with gallium nitride (GaN) channel material to overcome the limitations of conventional MOSFET structures in improving device performance at scaled gate lengths and voltages. The design targets of this study are the doping profile (ND), and gate work function (Ф). The device has been modeled using the Silvaco Atlas 2D device simulator. The proposed model has been validated by calibrating it against the parabolic potential-based analytical model for short-channel JLDG MOSFETs in the subthreshold regime of Jazaeri et al. Device figure of merits (FOMs) such as ON-current (ION), ON-OFF current ratio (ION/IOFF), subthreshold swing (SS), and drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) have been evaluated. The maximum on-current, (ION) = 0.9 mA/µm, has been achieved by tuning the channel doping concentration (ND) to 1 × 1019 cm-3. Tuning the gate work function, (Ф) also has a substantial effect on the behavior of the device. The lowest OFF-state current (IOFF) of 1.24 × 10-16 A/µm and power dissipation of 9.69 × 10-17 W/µm have been found for gate work-function (Ф) = 5.1 eV (Au). In addition, the on-current to off-current ratio (ION/IOFF) of 7.56 × 1012 revolutionizes the applicability of the device in the semiconductor industry. Thus, the remarkable improvements in device FOMs prove that GaN-based JLDG MOSFETs are a strong contender for applications requiring low-power logic switching in the next generation.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is still a relatively new field of research, and its potential to be used in the healthcare and medical sectors is enormous. In the last five years, IoT has been a go-to option for various applications such as using sensors for different features, machine-to-machine communication, etc., but precisely in the medical sector, it is still lagging far behind compared to other sectors. Hence, this study emphasises IoT applications in medical fields, Medical IoT sensors and devices, IoT platforms for data visualisation, and artificial intelligence in medical applications. A systematic review considering PRISMA guidelines on research articles as well as the websites on IoMT sensors and devices has been carried out. After the year 2001, an integrated outcome of 986 articles was initially selected, and by applying the inclusion-exclusion criterion, a total of 597 articles were identified. 23 new studies have been finally found, including records from websites and citations. This review then analyses different sensor monitoring circuits in detail, considering an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) scenario, device applications, and the data management system, including IoT platforms for the patients. Lastly, detailed discussion and challenges have been outlined, and possible prospects have been presented.

OBJECTIVES: Develop and validate short and rapid forms of the 36-item Menstrual Practice Needs Scale (MPNS-36). DESIGN: Item reduction prioritised content validity and was informed by cognitive interviews with schoolgirls in Bangladesh, performance of scale items in past research and stakeholder feedback. The original MPNS-36 was revalidated, and short and rapid forms tested in a cross-sectional survey. This was followed by further tests of dimensionality, internal consistency and validity in multiple cross-sectional surveys. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Short form (MPNS-SF) and rapid form (MPNS-R) measures were developed in a survey of 313 menstruating girls (mean age=13.51) in Khulna, Bangladesh. They were further tested in the baseline survey of the Adolescent Menstrual Experiences and Health Cohort, in Khulna, Bangladesh (891 menstruating girls, mean age=12.40); and the dataset from the MPNS-36 development in Soroti, Uganda (538 menstruating girls, mean age=14.49). RESULTS: The 18-item short form reflects the six original subscales, with the four core subscales demonstrating good fit in all three samples (Khulna pilot: root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.064, 90% CI 0.043 to 0.084, Comparative Fit Index (CFI)=0.94, Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI)=0.92. Cohort baseline: RMSEA=0.050, 90% CI 0.039 to 0.062, CFI=0.96, TLI=0.95. Uganda: RMSEA=0.039, 90% CI 0.028 to 0.050, CFI=0.95, TLI=0.94). The 9-item rapid form captures diverse needs. A two-factor structure was the most appropriate but fell short of adequate fit (Khulna pilot: RMSEA=0.092, 90% CI 0.000 to 0.158, CFI=0.93, TLI=0.89). Hypothesised associations between the MPNS scores and other constructs were comparable between the MPNS-36 and MPNS-SF in all populations, and replicated, with attenuation, in the MPNS-R. Internal consistency remained acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The MPNS-SF offers a reliable and valid measure of adolescent girls' menstrual hygiene experience while reducing participant burden, to support implementation and improve measurement in menstrual health research. The MPNS-R provides a brief measure with poorer structural validity, suited to short surveys and including menstrual health within broader research topics.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual health is essential for gender equity and the well-being of women and girls. Qualitative research has described the burden of poor menstrual health on health and education; however, these impacts have not been quantified, curtailing investment. The Adolescent Menstrual Experiences and Health Cohort (AMEHC) Study aims to describe menstrual health and its trajectories across adolescence, and quantify the relationships between menstrual health and girls' health and education in Khulna, Bangladesh. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: AMEHC is a prospective longitudinal cohort of 2016 adolescent girls recruited at the commencement of class 6 (secondary school, mean age=12) across 101 schools selected through a proportional random sampling approach. Each year, the cohort will be asked to complete a survey capturing (1) girls' menstrual health and experiences, (2) support for menstrual health, and (3) health and education outcomes. Survey questions were refined through qualitative research, cognitive interviews and pilot survey in the year preceding the cohort. Girls' guardians will be surveyed at baseline and wave 2 to capture their perspectives and household demographics. Annual assessments will capture schools' water, sanitation and hygiene, and support for menstruation and collect data on participants' education, including school attendance and performance (in maths, literacy). Cohort enrolment and baseline survey commenced in February 2023. Follow-up waves are scheduled for 2024, 2025 and 2026, with plans for extension. A nested subcohort will follow 406 post-menarche girls at 2-month intervals throughout 2023 (May, August, October) to describe changes across menstrual periods. This protocol outlines a priori hypotheses regarding the impacts of menstrual health to be tested through the cohort. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: AMEHC has ethical approval from the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee (369/22) and BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health Institutional Review Board (IRB-06 July 22-024). Study materials and outputs will be available open access through peer-reviewed publication and study web pages.

BACKGROUND: In today's society, cancer has become a big concern. The most common cancers in women are breast cancer (BC), endometrial cancer (EC), ovarian cancer (OC), and cervical cancer (CC). CC is a type of cervix cancer that is the fourth most common cancer in women and the fourth major cause of death. RESULTS: This research uses a network approach to discover genetic connections, functional enrichment, pathways analysis, microRNAs transcription factors (miRNA-TF) co-regulatory network, gene-disease associations, and therapeutic targets for CC. Three datasets from the NCBI's GEO collection were considered for this investigation. Then, using a comparison approach between the datasets, 315 common DEGs were discovered. The PPI network was built using a variety of combinatorial statistical approaches and bioinformatics tools, and the PPI network was then utilized to identify hub genes and critical modules. CONCLUSION: Furthermore, we discovered that CC has specific similar links with the progression of different tumors using Gene Ontology terminology and pathway analysis. Transcription factors-gene linkages, gene-disease correlations, and the miRNA-TF co-regulatory network were revealed to have functional enrichments. We believe the candidate drugs identified in this study could be effective for advanced CC treatment.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, men's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs and related services are often neglected. Little is known of men's SRH concerns, and of the phenomenal growth of the informal and private health actors in the provision of sexual health services to men in rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. METHODS: Using a mixed methods approach, a survey of 311 married men in three rural and urban sites was conducted in three different districts of Bangladesh and 60 in-depth interviews were conducted to understand their SRH concerns and choice of providers to seek treatment. RESULTS: The research findings reveal that- men's various SRH concerns are embedded in psychosocial and cultural concerns about their masculinity and expectations of themselves as sexual beings, with worries about performance, loss of semen and virility being dominant concerns. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were also mentioned as a concern but ranked much lower. Informal providers such as village doctors (rural medical practitioners and palli chikitsoks), drug store salespeople, homeopaths, traditional healers (Ojha/pir/fakir, kabiraj, totka) and street sellers of medicines are popular, accessible and dominate the supply chain. CONCLUSION: There is a need of appropriate interventions to address men's anxieties and worries about their sexual abilities, well-being and choice of providers. This would go a long way to address and alleviate concerns, as well as identify and push men to seek  formal care for asymptomatic STIs, and thereby reduce costs incurred and gender tensions in households.

Based on the first-principles density functional theory, Janus WXY (X ≠ Y = S, Se, and Te) trilayer homostructures for different stacking patterns are studied in this work to analyze their appropriateness in fabricating photovoltaic (PV) devices. A total of fifteen trilayer homostructures are proposed, corresponding to the suitable five stacking patterns, such as AAA, AA'A, ABA, AB'A, and A'BA' for each Janus WXY (X ≠ Y = S, Se, and Te) material. Structural and energetic parameters for all the fifteen structures are evaluated and compared to find energetically stable structures, and dynamic stability is confirmed by phonon dispersion curves. All these configurations being homostructure, lattice mismatch is found to be very low (∼0.05%), unlike heterostructure, making them feasible for optoelectronics and PV applications. WSSe AAA, WSSe AA'A, and WSeTe AA'A are dynamically stable along with negative binding energy and show type-II band alignment, enabling effective spatial carrier separation of photogenerated carriers. The optical properties of dynamically stable WSSe AAA and WSSe AA'A structures are also calculated, and the absorption coefficients at the visible light region are found to be ∼3.5 × 105 cm-1, which is comparable to the perovskite material absorption coefficient. Moreover, we have compared the optical characteristics of dynamically stable WSSe AAA and WSSe AA'A structures with their monolayer structures to realize the significance of stacking trilayer structures. Electrical properties such as mobility and conductivity for dynamically stable WSSe AAA and WSSe AA'A structures are evaluated to suggest them as a probable efficient material in PV technology.
